I spent way more time and effort to select my divorce lawyer than I ever did to choose my (now ex) husband. I did extensive online research. I read tons of testimonials. I even listened to divorce podcasts and took notes.
On paper, Geraldine Hess stood out among the other divorce lawyers I considered because she is Fellow of the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), and her practice is 100% focused on family law.
In practice, Geraldine Hess ended up being an advocate I could TRUST to help me navigate through one of the worst times in my life.
I liked working with Geraldine because she was always tactful and professional, but at the same time, she never sugar coated anything or tip toed around difficult things that needed to be said or done. I loved that she was so straightforward and honest, while also being fair and kind.
I also really appreciated how tough Geraldine was, both mentally and emotionally. I don’t mean that she was a junk yard bull dog with a spiked collar and a loud bark. I mean that nothing surprised her or shocked her or threw her off her game. If my husband had set himself on fire while on the witness stand, Geraldine would probably have to stifle a yawn.
Beyond that, Geraldine was organized, reliable, and responsive, as were her assistants. She ran a tight ship, and I knew that she would never let anything fall through the cracks.
During my divorce, I ended up needing a criminal lawyer and then a contract lawyer. Geraldine referred me to two excellent attorneys who were both trustworthy and excellent in their fields.
Geraldine Hess has my highest recommendation. I hope never to get divorced again, but if I did, I would call Geraldine right away.

The short version:
If you need a family law attorney, go to Geraldine. She is smart, dedicated, no nonsense (but still kind), will keep you well informed and quickly and fully responds to questions. Bottom line, she takes care of business and does so extremely efficiently.
The long (yet still shortened) version:
My spouse and I decided to get divorced and started off with the collaborative divorce process. As the collaborative process neared completion, my spouse terminated the collaborative process despite the advice of counsel and a mutual divorce coach.
Shortly after terminating the collaborative process, my spouse hired a new attorney and filed for divorce while making many false and vicious accusations along with unreasonable and upsetting requests to the court. I obtained a new family law attorney/law group and a very contentious process ensued. After many months, not much progress had been made and my attorneys were convinced that settling outside of court was not likely. My attorneys therefore significantly increased their retainer and informed me that they would have to withdraw from my case if I was unable to pay the new retainer. At this point I had amassed a significant amount of debt and could not afford the amount they requested. They withdrew from my case. I was at a complete loss for what to do. I was financially destroyed, the emotional stress of the past year and a half was taking its toll on me and I didn’t know where to turn.
Then I found Geraldine and retained her services. Almost immediately the tone of the process changed and I felt like progress was being made. Geraldine quickly got up to speed with my case and hit the ground running. She laid out the options and scenarios, explained what she was thinking and why and developed a strategy for moving forward. She kept me fully informed and answered any questions I had every step of the way. A few months after Geraldine came on board, my case was settled and with an outcome that was significantly better than what I was expecting and better than previous offers made to my spouse which had been turned down.
Having the unfortunate, and likely uncommon, experience of working with multiple family law attorneys, I can say that Geraldine is awesome at her job! She did much more for me than any prior attorney in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost.
I never write reviews. However, felt compelled to write one for Geraldine as 1) a way to acknowledge and thank her for a job very well done and 2) to hopefully help others out there who find themselves going through a divorce. It is not fun. It is not easy. However, having the right attorney makes a world of difference.

Geraldine became my lawyer in 1996. She attempted to settle my case, which involved child support, child custody, and property settlement, amicably. However, my former spouse made things extremely difficult. Geraldine recognized that we would need to change the strategy for my case, and she made the change seamlessly. She represented me well, which resulted in my being awarded primary custody of my children. She also ensured that I was able to maintain my retirement savings (my former spouse had depleted his after our separation, and he wanted half of mine). My former spouse took me to Court twice after our divorce to reduce the amount of child support he was paying. I retained Geraldine for both of those cases and found her to be just as thorough as she had been during my divorce. My case has been closed for some time now, but I still consult with Geraldine as needed. Geraldine is smart, meticulous, honest, knowledgeable, and accessible, and I strongly recommend her to anyone who needs a divorce attorney.

My elderly and hearing-impaired parents had an HOC discrimination case brought against them, after their realtor led them astray with incorrect information. It caused an enormous amount of stress for all of us over the period of 2 years. However, the moment Mike came into the picture, the great weight on our shoulders instantly lifted.
Mike was extremely responsive, answered all my emails thoughtfully and thoroughly, met in person when I felt like I needed to have a quick meeting, and in short, I FULLY TRUSTED HIM. This was my first court case in my 50 years, and as a fairly impatient person, I learned that there were multiple steps we had to go through, and B could not be done before waiting to see how A played out. I think legal matters just come with so many unknowns as well, which makes everything more stressful for the layperson. It was only the full trust Mike inspired that allowed me to be patient with the process, and not have a breakdown along the way!
During our lengthy mediations with the complainant, there were 3 total respondents, each with our own lawyers. It was obvious (even to my parents for whom English is a second language) that Mike was the smartest person in the room. The other lawyers threw some ideas and opinions out but Mike was clearly the leader of the group, and the respondents and their respective lawyers, followed his gentle and professional lead and pace.
It might be cliche to say that I really hope I never see him again... but if we ever find ourselves in another legal situation, I know that it will be OK as long as we have Mike Campbell on our side. I believe he will always have the best interests of his clients in mind.

We recently won a lawsuit involving a dispute over our property line with Michael's help. Michael was the level-headed and logical person we needed to help us see through the complexity and emotions of the process. He helped us attempt to find a reasonable settlement and when that became not possible, he was extremely detailed-oriented, knowledgeable, and communicative as we prepared for trial. Mike helped us resolve multiple difficulties with contractors. All situations were resolved with positive monetary resolutions. I witnessed Ms. Rakityanskaya in court where she won a completely hopeless case (not mine). I then went back to her years later for my own needs.
She knows my case to the letter, even better that I know it myself. She makes preparation for document submissions and other things look effortless. I don't feel swamped and I always know that she has it under control.
Definitely a fighter. Doesn't give up. An aggressive, but smart litigator.

Let me start by saying that if it had not of been for Doug Coggins, my career and future welfare could very well be jeopardized. A little while ago I got into some trouble with the Montgomery County PD and received some fairly serious criminal traffic charges. I had never been in this situation before and had no idea where to start. I met Doug under the referral of my parents and after my first visit, I immediately began to feel better. He told me that based on my past record which was pretty clean considering what I was facing and my decent sense personal integrity, the outcome of my case had a very good chance of being favorable. However, he made sure that he did not give me a false sense of hope and reminded me that I was always at the mercy of the court and that he would do everything in his power to help me. Sure enough a few weeks later Doug came through ten-fold. After our initial meeting, he met with the states attorney and was able to negotiate a deal which entailed that my more serious charges would be dismissed if I agreed to perform 24 hours of community service. I met with Doug one more time after that to discuss the details regarding my community service and how it affected my charges specifically. Following that meeting we went to court where Doug and the states attorney presented the details of our agreement before the judge and asked for an extension so that I could complete my community service. I kept in touch with Doug via e-mail letting him know when my community service was done, and a few months later we went back to court and essentially sealed the deal. The serious charges were dismissed, and the points were dropped on the less serious ones pending that I paid the fines. Doug's proficiency and courtroom demeanor were impressive to say the least and I hardly had to tell the judge anything which was very reassuring since I knew he was on top of it. I highly recommend Doug Coggins to anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they need professional guidance and someone who has their back.

I contacted Mr. Rand less than a week before my scheduled hearing date. His fee for the initial consultation was very reasonable and overall his charges are reasonable. During the consultation we were able to figure the focus of my case which was a great help among all the issues I wanted to include. I decided to present my case myself and Mr. Rand spent 4 hours with me on a rainy SUNDAY afternoon to help me prepare. Tom knows many different areas of law- my complaint was against a condo association- his preparation helped me overcome the opposition which had TWO high priced lawyers presenting their case.
I would (and WILL) work with Tom in the future and highly recommend him to anyone looking to hire a knowledgeable attorney with solid credentials.

I was referred to Joel Zuckerman by another outstanding lawyer, Stephen Alexander Shechtel (has a perfect 10 rating on Avvo) whom was recommended to me by a trusted friend’s lawyer, Brian Sadur. This friend (a doctor and father), who had experienced an international marriage/divorce with a Japanese national, fully understood the custody challenges involved when divorcing a Japanese National—for context: Japanese culture advocates sole custody to the Japanese parent as the only and safest option for all Japanese (mixed or otherwise) children (hence Japan’s nickname “the black hole of child abduction”). This friend, who despite being a father and non-Japanese, managed to successful win fair custody access to his children against a Japanese mother—therefore his recommendation was clearly sound. Because of gross manipulation and abuse of the courts by my ex-husband’s lawyer, Jessica Markham (read my google review of Jessica Markham for a more thorough understanding of her slimy fermented underskin), I didn’t get the opportunity to follow-up on the recommendation until after my children were kidnapped in Japan from the USA by their father/my-japanese-ex-husband. Shechtel was unable to take on a new case at the time, but he referred me to Joel Zuckerman, who is not only an exceptional lawyer with an intact moral compass (as he took my case knowing I had already extinguished all my funds on legal fees up to that point), but whom also is experienced with complicated international custody cases.
When working on my case, I was blown away by how efficient and concise he worked with his time and communication (being mindful to not waste any of my already depleted funds). He always gave me straight answers (even when he knew it wasn’t the one I wanted to hear) and managed my expectations of what he could or couldn’t do for me. He also worked very fast to meet my fast moving Japanese court deadlines (as my ex always turned in his motions late leaving little time to prepare rebuttals—a shady trick Markham also used in US court). Despite managing my expectations realistically of a low recovery rate with Japan (to date, no non-Japanese parent has ever successfully recovered their child from japan through the Hague convention, and those recovered by other means are estimated to be around 4% in the last 40+ years), he successfully coordinated with my Japanese lawyer, Takao Tanase, to recover my children from parental abduction by means of a Habeas Corpus motion in Tokyo High Court—an insanely difficult task and even more rare feat. I can’t recommend Joel enough to parents in complicated custody battles and feel you won’t find a more hardworking and efficient lawyer with an intact integrity.

Joel Zuckerman represented me during my divorce and support enforcement/recalculation proceedings. I feel extremely fortunate to have had Joel's assistance through one of the most difficult times in my life. He is honest, professional, extremely thorough and well-prepared at all times. I met Mr. Zuckerman by accident. I got a temporary protective order from my ex and I was given the names of 3 attorneys to call. I found Joel Zuckerman on my own without recommendations. I called all 4 attorneys and Mr. Zuckerman was the only one that went above and beyond what I expected. It was my first time going through this and I did not know what to do, think or expect. However, he went directly to the court to get the recording of what my ex told the judge that allowed the judge to grant a temporary protective order. I was impressed. I hired him and during my the protective order hearing he was able to turn everything around. I then hired him for custody because there was an agreement signed that I had no clue of what certain things meant, but he represented me well and I was able to get additional items reverted from the contract I signed.
A few years later I hired him again for custody and we won custody and about $1800/month in child support. He was able to uncover a lot of income my ex was hiding. I couldn't have gone through my custody without him. He is experienced and professional, but most importantly he cares.

In a world where time is money, most attorneys are hard pressed to talk to people without being compensated. Today Attorney Torrence took the time to answer questions & provide options regarding a potential action. I sent an email to her on yesterday, she responded TODAY. She was not short or hurried and was MOST professional, knowledgeable and reasonable. She took her time and explained my options. It was pleasure to speak with her. And though I may not file an action that employs her TODAY, the time and the care that she took today is going to go a long way in helping to decide who I should go to when the time comes. After thirty five years with the company, only missing time out due to two pregnancies, I got hurt at work. One would think after all these years with the company one would know what to do. To my surprise, people were saying you can't file a workers’ comp claim, the company will fire you or make your life miserable.
I called many different law firms and they would not take my case. It was looking very gloomy until someone recommended Will Inman to me. Will Inman knows his business and goes about it with clarity and timeliness. You're in good hands if you have the ability to listen with an open mind and follow directions. With his "know-how" and both of you working with his competent office staff, you'll quickly recognize that you're going to get the best results possible. He acts swiftly when necessary and knows when to ride out the process. This professional behavior is the result of a man who understands how to deal with the minutia of law.
As someone who is struggling, this is very important because I feel anxious about how long everything takes and whether or not I'll be able to provide for my future because my original plans no longer matter since having a life-changing accident. Will gets the "big picture" and what more could put you at ease than knowing you've found an attorney who will actively defend your legal woes for the best possible outcome. I keep reminding myself that it's difficult to see a big picture when you stand too close to it. It's necessary to stand back to observe all the techniques the artist used to create an image you can understand as a whole.

I retained Howard Cheris for a complex legal matter in Montgomery County, MD. Starting with the initial consultation Howard cleared his desk and was very attentive to both my needs and my case. Although it was clear to me that Howard was a busy, successful attorney I felt like I was his most important client. As the case progressed there were numerous intricate details and positions that needed to be formed and clarified. I have know Mark Weinberg for nearly 30 years as a trusted friend and for the last 8 or 10 years as my primary legal advisor for the philanthropy I direct. We are a major ($40M/year) biomedical philanthropy with some additional interests in education primarily in the US and occasionally in the 3rd world. It is rare to call Mark Weinberg and not get straight through to talk with him. If he is out of the office or for some other reason is unable to talk with you immediately, he returns the call the same day or sends an e-mail to let you know when he will be able to respond. He would rather lose a client than compromise his integrity, whcih makes him a totally trustworthy and objective counselor. He is particularly knowledgeable about nonprofit law, and he is careful to point out potential conflicts of interest and actions which could be misinterpreted even if they might be, in the strictest sense, legal. Mark has been our attorney for over 25 years, and he has never failed to provide wise counsel every time we have called upon him.

I was referred to Cheryl after my father passed away. He had set up Trusts for me and my brother and sister and I was the initial Trustee. Cheryl was excellent in helping me deal with my father's estate and setting up the three Trusts. Until my father passed, we had no idea that our inheritance would be in the form of irrevocable Trusts instead of outright to us. Cheryl helped us to make sure that we did not violate the terms of the Trusts. She helped us set them up to make them irrevocable and she gave us detailed instructions about how to manage the Trusts so that we did not violate my father's wishes. My wife and I were referred to Ms. Johnson by our financial advisor, who said that we may have to pay estate taxes. 3. Diligent and demonstrates document preparation;

I've been fortunate to have Doug as my attorney since 2002, through various on-the-job injuries. Worker's compensation can be a confusing and intimidating beast, especially when the employer is a county government that does not care in the least for its public safety employees. Dan was still dealing with my first DUI, when I had to hire him for my second. The situation spanned two states and timing was of the essence. Dan was strategic in his approach and knew his way very well in the courtroom and with the right people. As a result, I walked away with a deal that could have been beat only by not having a dui (or two) in the first place. I hope that I never have to hire him for myself again. Honestly the best lawyer I have ever had! Hoping you never need one, but if you do then call him today! This was my second DUI charge and 1. He never made me feel bad 2. Gave me facts only and told me realistically what could happen. 3. Followed up periodically and let me know everything what was happening and basically held my hand the whole way.

When my family sold our house, we needed a shared driveway maintenance agreement to close the deal with our relocation company. Bob drafted a driveway maintenance agreement for the three neighbors to sign based on terms that we agreed upon. There had been some conflict in the past with these neighbors regarding ownership and maintenance costs of the shared driveway. Bob was diligent in working with us, our neighbors and their attorneys to finalize an agreement that we were all in agreement with.
