We hired Tommy to unravel years of a complicated real estate inheritance. He was very patient and specific with our needs. Gave us peace of mind. We hired him again to draw up our Wills. His staff made sure our wishes were carefully expressed and advised us of the proper docs that were needed with our Wills. Very professional and affordable.

Had difficult business Chapter 11 proceeding. Claimants included Department of Defense and other government entities, not to mention interfering competitors. Brenda Rolon and Robert Valdespino of the Valdespino law firm were totally thorough, dilligent, incisive and hugely knowledgable of their field of expertiese. You cannot go wrong using Ms. Rolon and/or the Valdespino Law Firm.

I had the good fortune of retaining Corbin Snow to represent me in a case of enormous complexity, and he proved himself worthy of his excellent reputation. He demonstrated a dynamic intellect, mastery of the law, and a genius for navigating the intricacies of legal procedure. But I admire him most as a man of honesty, virtue, and character beyond reproach. In short, it was an honor to work with Corbin Snow, and I feel privileged to recommend him to others.

Ted did an amazing job staying on top of my case and staying in contact with me. Not one time did he BS me about the specifics of my case. It's rare to find lawyer (or anyone who works in a courtroom) who treats you like a human being and not just a client. I'm so damn lucky he was able to represent me and get my case dismissed. I highly recommend him if you're facing a criminal charge and need results.

I was referred to Mr. Barajas, who contacted with me without delay. After reviewing my case with me, he provided some options to consider, and took the time and care to ensure I made decisions that I was comfortable making. The whole process was made clear to me before proceeding. I am confident that I received the best outcome possible, and I believe that Mr. Barajas was able to achieve this outcome because of his knowledge of the law, excellent communication skills, and genuine care and concern for his client.

I sought Jim's expertise in business owner exit strategies. His deep understanding of what owner-operated businesses need to know, need to prioritize and need to manage for maximum business sales price is impressive. I was very pleased with his focus on actions that would result in maximum upside for me. Jim "gets" the business of business - profitable growth, operating margins and strong business systems needed to turn the key in the door every day. If you are a business owner in San Antonio, TX who wants to make sure you get maximum fair market value for your business, Jim is for you. He is approachable, supportive and insightful. His deep experience in Texas law comes through in the advice he gives and in his insights as he presents options for your consideration. Unlike other attorneys whose legal discipline narrows their field of vision, Jim's capabilities lie in his ability to tie together multiple disciplines into what I can only describe as Strategic Legal Counsel. Our first meeting set the stage for on-going collaboration. You'll recognize within 20 minutes how his outward focus and gentle hand on your shoulder combine to make him a true business resource.

First, I normally do not rate anyone excellent unless they really deserve it, but if you work with this man, I think you will agree. Walter is not the typical attorney in brightly shined shoes, thousand dollar suits driving a Lamborghini car. He wears boots, jeans and although I don't know what kind of vehicle he drives, I would bet it's a truck. He has an office that makes you feel very comfortable and at home; good parking too. My husband and I have been dealing with Walter for many years on property rentals, sales and foreclosures. My parents used him for all their needs. He handled our real estate issues from start to finish with no headaches for us to deal with. We totally trust his judgement, which has been to our advantage. If you want a legal matter done quickly, less trouble on your part, and with good results plus at a reasonable price, call this attorney, you will not regret it. He handles wills also, just in case you haven't done that yet.

Baltazar R. Serna Jr. AKA Walter Serna did a fantastic job representing me during my DWI charge. With a very reasonable fee, he was able to get my charge reduced to a much lessor charge even with all the glaring evidence against me. He fought hard for me and truly cared for my well-being. I highly recommend him.

I utilized Veronica for my uncontested divorce. She was prompt, professional and most importantly kind. She cares about her clients emotional needs as much as their legal needs. She spent time with me talking me through the process as well as what happens in my life now that I am a single mother of three children after 17 years. I've never had a better experience with an attorney. She is one of the great ones. You won't be disappointed.

I had my first run-in with the law with a Class B Misdemeanor on my hands. Although she encouraged that a trial by jury with the case was a good route for this case (the plaintiff company did not send in the photographic evidence as they claimed they had taken) I settled on Deferred Adjudication, since I was new to all of this and didn't want the burden of court dates. Anyhow, I was struck with a warrant for a technical violation of probation and called her immediately for advice. She found out my bond, told me exactly what to do and told me of the Satellite Booking room where you are quickly processed and out within an hour. I will defiantly making sure she is my lawyer for the upcoming MTR hearing I have. She is informative, trust worthy and listens to your side and will give you the best advice for your case. Highly recommended.

I chose this firm because of their collaborative law approach. My divorce process was complicated by my ex-husband's attorney who made collaboration more difficult; however, Shellie Reyes was able to navigate through multiple overwhelming issues in a professional and respectful manner. As one might expect, a divorce is an emotional and stressful process but Shellie and her team offered expert advice and helped me prioritize what was most important for my future. Shellie's approach was personalized, family-focused, and cost conscious. I'm very grateful!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
