Mr. Elliot has provided outstanding personal and business legal advice for me for several years. He advised me on setting up a business partnership, a trust, and wrote my will. He also advised me on a lawsuit involving my Mother which was extremely helpful in helping me monitor the case from several hundred miles away and expedited the gathering of evidence and witnesses. His help resulted in a favorable decision for my elderly Mother and the awarding of a judgement in her favor. His experience as a prosecuter in crimes against the elderly was most reassuring. He has my highest recommendation as a personal lawyer for either civil or criminal cases.

David helped me through a difficult process in court. I was Pro se throughout the case and soon discovered that I needed a professional to represent me although my paperwork was correctly completed and I was comfortable representing myself. He listened to me and resolved my issue with the greatest of competency. Something that I was unable to do on my own. Also, he did charged a very reasonable flat rate. Thank you David.

I hired Mark to consult on my very complicated estate case that had been horribly messed up by my first lawyer. He was able to quickly review what was going on and give me an intelligent assessment of my case. I regret that he was not able to take my case. I'm sure it would have been resolved much more quickly and with much less heartache, pain and financial expense. God forbid I ever have to go to Probate Court again, but if I did, Mark would be my first choice for counsel.

Mr. Deadman was helpful in obtaining a settlement for arrearages accrued for child support. He was able to finally track my EX down and make the court hold him responsible, which 2 other attorneys could not do. It is so nice not to have to worry constantly about an attorney doing his job, I know Glenn has it handled. I would recommend him to friends and family.

Mark worked with us on a complex piece of IP-related litigation. He did a great job helping us through depositions hearings and in dealing with a large, well-funded and aggressive opponent. He is calm under pressure, determined and tenacious. He won the respect of all our staff and of the opposing attorneys for his resolution and intellect. I recommend him highly.

I met Mark in the early moments of my first adult crisis. It was 2007. My family immediately took me to long-time family/business attorney for guidance. Mark was a new lawyer & assisting my family's lawyer, who introduced him as his best associate. My crisis did last for over 3 years with no permanent orders - that was torture, but the difference: was that I overcame those years & the custody issues peacefully. I've learned in the midst of my worlds colliding, how could I have anticipated ALL the aftermath of healing & moving on? The financial trauma. And (just) The Trauma! ? Alone, one can expect to kiss sanity & a successful outcome g'bye. At the end of the day, A good attorney will get you through the court part. GREAT COUNSEL, however, will get you through the LIFE part too. That is why, to this day, I look to Mark consistantly. I've not been able to place valuation for wisdom gained by working with him. The value details go above contractual, fiduciary obligations. It's very much about execution - the whole truth - & as long as that's been established, I know my part: commit to listen & follow through with recommendations. I can hang my hat on that. For another 15 years. I know my future & my peace of mind are worth more than being recognized as a billable hour. I estimate You are too! if you are looking for great legal counsel.

My husband and I contacted Ms. Packard for help probating my husband's brother's will. Allison went far beyond helping us not only with the probate but also helped us with re-locating our special-needs nephew in an extremely timely and proficient manner. She has been extremely professional and knowledgeable, and has consistently stayed in contact with us throughout the issues we had until they were concluded.

Genaro Cortez was assigned to my husbands case. He was the third and last assigned attorney. Genaro even though assigned to our case went above and beyond what I would have ever expected. Our first assigned attorney had a good reputation as the top attorney. Well we wasted time in hopes that he would live up to that name. We wasted over a year with no progress, postponing our case every two months, lost evidence and he would rarely respond to phone calls, Our second attorney with 40yrs of experience plainly admitted he did not believe my husband and asked to be removed from the case. This was a big case. When Genaro was assigned to our case he hit the ground running. Immediately requesting motions, requesting evidence, refusing further court date postponements, and defending our rights in every possible way. Most importantly, he believed our version of events and he did a great job representing our case. I truly appreciate that even though he was assigned to our case he fought this case in every possible way, always kept us informed, and always communicated through text, emails, phone. I highly recommend him if you need someone that will defend you in every possible way. After reviewing many attorneys I do believe he is the best in Bexar county.

Trey Wilson really knows his tuff. he asked lots of questions to fully understand and evaluate my land dispute. At first I wondered whether he thought I was lying or hiding something, but after hearing the whole story, he came up with an immediate strategy that I and my previous lawyer never even thought of. It worked, too.

Javier Espinoza is a knowledgeable, honest, and compassionate attorney. He represented me in an employment discrimination case against my former employer and always kept me informed of the status of the case. I felt very comfortable openly discussing the difficult aspects of my situation because I knew he believed in my case and would provide me the best representation. He was completely honest and supportive throughout the entire process, I trusted his advice in making difficult decisions. My case was settled at mediation and the mediator made it a point to compliment Mr. Espinoza's professionalism and skills. Mr. Espinoza also employs staff who are professional, caring, and create a warm, open environment.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
