The first two reviews you see here are from two vindictive mothers, trying to keep children away from the fathers. If you want fairness justice, abd somebody who will actually fight for you. Hire her she will not let you lie you cannot make up lies. You cannot be vindictive. She will help you down to the bottom. Another lawyer practically stole my money and I ended up with L Gavito. At first I thought she was rude with how short she kept phone calls and I was getting and thinking my case is just another pile for her. The words "lazy" and "incompetent" are often thrown around without much thought, especially in describing lawyers. In this case, I believe both terms are fully merited. John J. Ritenour Jr. is an appallingly bad attorney who should be disbarred. In 2015, Ritenour was assigned to serve as a public defender for a client appealing a death sentence. He met briefly with that client once. He failed to follow up on any of the evidence the client presented him. Let me be clear, this wasn't a case where a lawyer declined to present looney-tunes nonsense that was easily disproven - such situations do happen frequently. This was a case where Ritenour failed to even perform a cursory check of the client's evidence, as if he had already made up his mind beforehand to not present the evidence. He then submitted a poorly copy-pasted brief with the wrong client's name on it (seriously, ChatGPT could write a better brief), unsigned by his client (clients are required to sign legal briefs such as this, but Ritenour couldn't be bothered to meet with his client a second time to secure the signature), and then told the court his client "must lose". It doesn't matter if the client was guilty or not - that's for the court to decide, not the client's own lawyer. If he was truly convinced his client was guilty, Ritenour could have - should have - asked the court to provide his client with a different lawyer, but instead decided to subvert the very system of law itself to intentionally sink his client's case. Appalling behavior. See https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/23/23-323/280300/20230922191006608_Gamboa--Final%20Petition%2009-22%20rtf.pdf for a Supreme Court petition regarding this incident.

Spent only 10 minutes speaking to prior lawyer, met client only once, declined to use provided evidence. Then turned in a replica habeas brief for a different defendant leaving that defendant’s name and grammar / spelling mistakes. Yesterday I sent a VERY detailed (1500 word) request for consultation to Mr. Levy asking for an honest legal evaluation of potential ADA, EEOC and wrongful termination allegations I have against my former "big corporation" employer. Later the same day Mr. Levy personally contacted me twice. I was unavailable to pick up the phone when he called, so the onus is on me. I called him back this morning and spoke about my case in detail. Mr. Levy clearly has experience fighting this specific employer regarding EEOC-related claims of alleged employer ADA violations and wrongful termination. He gave me a no bull case evaluation with pros and cons and always allowed me to speak. He asked pertinent questions about the facts and events of my case, some of which I had not even thought about. After 30 minutes of conversation, he offered to represent me. I have not yet signed representation documents so this review is listed as a Consult. Thus far I am 100% pleased with Mr. Levy's legal knowledge, willingness to help, honesty, and informing me of any flaws of my case. The advice below is based on my experience and what I was able to do based on my own particular physical and/or mental disability, education, and a lot of trial-by-fire failures before finally obtaining success. Use, modify, adjust, or don't talk my advice at all adjusted to your unique situation. I am a layman & did the best I could: ****Heed my advice: prior to contacting an attorney, make sure you fully educate yourself on the merits (pros) and cons of your case. Remove your emotions and feelings from the situation and be as objective as possible about your case as it pertains to the reseat you've done, in my case TX Employment Labor Law, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the EEOC, and the adept of Labor. Be honest with yourself and document everything. Once you've researched whether or not you may have a case, write the key events, times, people, and places down and back up your allegations with the research you've done. ***Once you've written down the essential details of your case backed by research you believe proves your case has merit, practice telling your story objectively (not subjectively) in 5 to 7 minutes. The goal should be that anyone you tell your case story to should be able to clearly understand the when, where, why, who, and how's of your case. So when those 5 - 7 minutes are up, the listener (Attorney) has a full and complete idea of what you are claiming, who you're claiming against, why you believe you have a case, , what objective evidence/law/documentation supports your case and how you intend to argue your case and what realistic outcome you want the attorney's representation to help you achieve. If you can do this, your chances of having your case taken seriously improve. When requesting help from an attorney, be prepared and present your case with the seriousness it deserves. If you desire the best chance of an attorney accepting your case, invest time and effort to research the merits of your case and be able to support your case with objective evidence including applicable law. An example of what not to write when requesting assistance from an attorney: "I was fired and my boss hates me and im crying I want my job back." This example does not give the attorney any helpful information on why he/she should contact you back except for the fact that you've been fired and you want your job back. Great: but WHAT happened resulting in your termination? WHEN and WHERE did this happen and WHO was involved? HOW were you terminated? WHAT reason were you given by your employer and WHY do you object? WHY do you think you have a valid legal case against your employer? WHAT law did they allegedly violate applicable to your case? WHAT objective evidence do you have to prove your allegations? And, most importantly HOW can the attorney help you and WHAT realistic outcome do you want? Good luck!

Extremely slow on preparing and filing for a case. Very expensive was being charged $100 per text message that went to her paralegal. When it came time for the case she was to busy and had to pass my case off to another lawyer. With other lawyer we basically had to start all over as she was not involved or familiar with my case from the beginning. All of this was being charged to me so it was like I had to pay for two lawyers. When the court date finally arrived the new lawyer which was Miss Day appointed by Miss Cruz was very unknowledgeable and the case was thrown out. I wouldn’t hire either of them two as all they do is try and drag it out as long as possible to be able to charge you more hours.

Kay's office was highly proficient at obtaining the upfront retainer fees and ongoing high legal fees. They were timely in submitting paperwork. In the end, Kay provided little value beyond what a paralegal could have done, or a discount law office doing family law. When it was time to go before the judge, she had done no research on who would be hearing the case. She told me that she had prepared for a different judge, and now we were unlikely to win. She was correct. If you simply need paperwork filed on time, Kay seems like an expensive person to do this. If you need well-researched legal assistance, you should seek it elsewhere.

My ex wife and I had a custody order that not even four months old when Kay helped me file for temporary custody under emergency circumstances. Needless to say she was like a brick wall, anything they tried to overturn the order was denied. We ended up coming to an agreement for 50/50 custody. She worked with me so I could afford her services and took my case on at a moment's notice. If wasn't for her services, knowledge and compassion my kids would still be stuck in the position that they were previously in.

**DO NOT** hire this Law Firm, they are thieves, they lie lie lie to get you to retain them using the fakest sympathy for your divorce issues and later continue to lie and rob you. My attorney Brooke Irey from this firm refused to represent me claiming I agreed to her withdrawal, however a judge has never approved that withdrawal. She got me locked out of my home that I have exclusive rights to until it sells. She risked mine and my sons lives to date by not writing up and delivering the judges orders Overall sneaky grimy shady business. All this because 7500.00 was not enought to write up a judges court order from 07/2023 according to her. That was not part of the 75000.00 She got me locked out of my home that I have exclusive rights to until it sells. I will be pressing Tresspassing charges on all parties involved.

In my opinion, there's no one better. I've hired several attorneys due to custody issues for my son. Her office was the most efficient, informative, pleasant, empathetic staff I've ever worked with. Going to court is never a positive experience, but Ana Hessbrook's practice made me comfortable, prepared, and confident. She was communicative and very good at returning calls and emails. She helped me win rights for my child that I had fought for over 7 years. I found her courtroom demeanor to be cool, confident, assertive, and very well versed in the Texas Family Code Laws and the Judicial practice. She doesn't get pushed around like some other attorneys. I wouldn't go to court in Texas with anyone else for a family law case. I am very satisfied and highly recommend her competent services because she wins cases.

I couldn't have asked for a better attorney in my corner than Ms. Cadena. She is experienced, smart, and effective. While other attorneys treat the law like a game, Ms. Cadena maintains her integrity and composure amidst the challenges. She values her clients' time, interests, and money by billing reasonably, responding to calls and messages quickly, and by advocating for the 'right' thing. Her advice and representation was invaluable to me during a very challenging and complicated case. I 100% recommend her to anyone who wants the interests of their children to come above all else.

Back in 2010 I was arrested for possession of marijuana. I was called to court, showed up the first time and didn't go back after. I had a warrant out for my arrest and moved to California in 2011. Between then and now, my family in Texas had received many letters and phone calls from the bail bonds threatening to take my family's property etc. Just recently, I decided to take care of this issue. I called Mr. Finkel because he had dealt with a case with my family years back. I was expecting the worst, time in jail and/or a large fine because of additional prior charges. From California, I paid a low, flat rate fee to have Mr. Finkel look at the case and see what he could do for me. He made sure to stay in touch when any new information arose and kept me informed as needed. Initially, Mr. Finkel told me that I would most likely have to turn myself in and do close to 30 days in jail. After sharing more information about a potential bias in my arrest, I heard from Mr. Finkel, in less than a week, stating that the case had been dropped, completely. I am extremely pleased with his services, especially services done long distance. I can't thank him enough!

I hired Kevin Stouwie in Feb of 2017 because my husband was continuously denied parole for the past 6 years. I finally was in search of a parole attorney. I called on the weekend and left a message for someone to return my call. He called me directly back on Monday and informed me that it was unusual for him to return phone calls, but his office help was out for the day. He was very attentive and asked multiple questions and explained the parole process and what his role would be. He truly cared about helping my husband be released. He didn't understand why he kept being denied parole. He frankly told me that sometimes all it takes is an attorney fighting for an incarcerated loved one and perhaps just asking WHY? He gained my trust and I felt like I was making the right decision in hiring him. I couldn't afford the full $2500 at the time, and he gladly arranged a flexible payment plan for me to pay it in full over the next 6 months before his parole review began. Also, I paid an additional $300 because I opted for Kevin to visit with my husband at his unit as well. This $300 was just for travel expenses and I had no problem with the amount. Over the next 6 months I would feel uneasy and want to ask questions, I sent all items requested to help his office prepare a parole packet... I would call and ask questions just because I was a nervous wreck. His staff was always helpful and encouraging and always available to assist me. I didn't speak with him directly again until after the parole hearing. They called me a week before and informed me of when the parole hearing would take place with Kevin and I was filled with anxiety and worry and just a ball of emotions!! Office manager Heather gladly talked to me and advised me of what to expect. Now, my husband is coming home! I wish I had hired Kevin 4 yrs ago! He definitely fights for his clients and wins!! Thank you Kevin Stouwie!! I'm eternally grateful for your help in restoring my family!!!

I was not a big fan of lawyers, but needed one because of a lawsuit that was filed against me for a contract dispute. I was given Kevin's name and one other attorney. I called both places. The other guy didn't call me back. So, I met with kevin after one of his assistants got my facts and information and scheduled an appointment. He was not what I expected, and that's a good thing. He was really nice, and made me feel welcome while he was reading all my paperwork. He asked me a bunch of questions, took notes, and then he told me my options, including options that did not involve him getting anything. I never felt like he was trying to scare me or get me to hire him. Once I saw he didn't need my case and just wanted me to make an informed decision, I knew he was trustworthy. He ended up chargingd me a lot less than what others had told me lawyers charge, and he got the job done without taking forever. He was always available via email, but it was sometimes difficult to get him on the phone, due to his busy schedule I guess.

Jennifer and Satff have been AMAZING during recent child modification orders! She spent an hour and half with us during the initial consultation, took her time researching a huge binder of documentation I provided her, and has always responded as soon as she could. After HOURS of back and forth in attempts to come to an agreement with the other party, the judge gave us about 2 1/2 hours to hear the case, an hour and 1/2 that the other party took up, which only left Jennifer about an hour to represent us. She was very nice, professional, and to the point when cross examining. Made sure she thank the Judge and staff who stayed in court until 6:30pm on our behalf. Most importantly, she obtained a victory for us. If you ever need a attorney to represent you Jennifer is the one you want. Thank you for all you have done for us.

Rob Bondurant successfully followed through on a case that dragged on for several years because my opponent was a thoroughly dishonorable person. My opponent was evidently acquainted enough with the legal system to drag the case out as long as possible, hoping I would give up. but Rob patiently worked with me to resolve it. Evidently, hoping to prevail via illogical and nefarious means, my opponent went through several attorneys. I only had one.

His final bill was itemized and quite fair for the quality of his service. I would highly recommend Mr Bondurant to anyone needing legal representation in a civil case.

Mr. Trudeau was the mediator in our case and we are very appreciative of his concern. He patiently explained the mediation process, and told us of our rights. It was the first time either of us had been in this situation. We left the mediation feeling that Mr. Trudeau had been fair and honest.

Mr. Trudeau mediated a personal injury case for our family yesterday - he was amazingly professional, thoroughly understood all the issues and treated my elderly parents with respect and kindness. He is clearly gifted - for nervous clients, one could not have hoped for a better outcome. Both sides approached the mediation process in a calm and civil manner and I am confident that all parties feel a fair result was reached by a GREAT MEDIATOR!!!

He had my case in his office for many months and never realized the case had never been set for trial despite the fact that opposing counsel had asked him about the trial setting many times. When he realized he'd committed malpractice he held in one hand a hold-harmless agreement he demanded I sign and my case file in the other, saying he wouldn't allow my case to continue if I didn't sign his release. Some of the papers in the file needed to be filed within one hour due to a time limit issue, so he craftily had me over a barrel. Stay away.

My family and I spent a lot of money on Mrs. Vela and he didn't do a good job representing me. I had never been in trouble before and instead of working with the co defendant he worked against her. She got off with less time and less everything compared to me and her lawyer was free. I also needed him later on to try and get me off earlier and sent another $1000 in and instead he used that money for paperwork which I provided for something else. I have paid him over $8000 and 5 years later I'm still on probation. I've requested information for my case and never received it. He promised a lot and came through with nothing that makes him untrustworthy. He was never responsive I alway has to call a few times to get ahold of him. He also never kept me informed unless I made the initiative.

Best Attorney of 2022. Ms Natasha Torres is an awesome attorney who works hard for her clients and makes sure you understand everything clearly and she even met up with me a second time to review the discovery to make sure I could review everything myself and have transparency throughout my case. I always thought public defenders didn't care as much for their clients but Natasha showed me the opposite. If I would've paid for her to represent me I would've been completely satisfied because I felt like she truly was working for me despite being court appointed,if you are looking for a good attorney in Texas look no further, I just felt the need to give my honest feedback on something that can help someone else in the future. I promise she won't disappoint, and will discuss the best options for you to take in your specific situation. She's very friendly, professional, understanding, transparent, and does her job very well and she's very beautiful on top of that so give her a call if you need legal representation don't think twice I can vouch on it that you won't be disappointed!

Gayle Caldarolla was Court Appointed. She immediately understood my position. I couldn't get over how quick thinking and compassionate she was. I had no money, and for that, I was so embarrassed. I feel Gayle Gayle still understood and had great empathy for my situation. I was hugely impressed with her rapport and compassion for my problem. I wish I could afford an attorney, but I found Gay was so bright and quickly understood things I didn't even understand. Personable, honest, and energetic. I did not expect that. Everyone from the Bail Bond people to other regular people told me how you could never depend on a court-appointed attorney, and in my case, I found that to be a completely false impression. She was so quick and smart, and I never felt that she looked down on me because of my financial situation. There was a time in my life when money was never an issue, but due to my pathological divorce situation, I was stripped of my career, home, and children's access. Needless to say, I would never have expected her to understand such a nightmare. I was "banished." I asked her frankly after she took the time to read just one paragraph of what happened to me, and she immediately admitted that she had never heard of that or seen it in her 38 years of legal practice. I admired her honesty and understanding, and I only wish I could pay her for what I believe is one of the most important issues facing Divorce Law and Family Courts today, as it was in 1987 when I read about this in my former husband's Psychiatry Journals. I've been aware of this quagmire since 1987 when my daughter was 6-7. She and I have suffered over this rhetorical mess of semantics for 36 years. She is now 42 years old, and it is still hanging in the air that the Mental Health and Legal Justice communities have STILL not been able to give this life-altering, damaging, and cruel issue. There IS something that they cannot seem to be able to "name." As Will said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." They have been fighting over the rhetoric of this devastating family law debate since Richard Gardner first coined the term "Parental Alienation Syndrome." NOBODY, not anyone on either side of the aisle, seems to be able to comprehend this most devastating form of the Emotional/Psychological Abuse of a Child, DSM v.995.51, among others, to explain this most endlessly severe and life-altering psychological devastation and abuse of one's child. It is well known among the Psychological and Psychiatric Community that Child Sexual Abuse, Child Physical Abuse that Psychological and Emotional Abuse of a Child (or teen) is the worst form of lifelong, intractable, and almost impossible to help the state of abuse of a child, including adolescents and teens. No one (to my knowledge) has ever been able to pierce this veil of this condition's dishonesty and vile nature. I did not even have to say any of this to Gayle Caldarolla because it was evident that she "got it" within minutes. No arguments, no humiliation, no belittling of me, just an eye-to-eye understanding of the swamp I have lived with for the past 23 years. Her interpersonal skills are remarkable, and she seemed to possess a fantastic grasp of my issues without me speaking. She told me I could Take care of this for yourself. I went through an unreasonably litigious divorce, which ended in my banishment by a powerful expert witness within the courts who just happened to be the man I was married to. She got that. I want to say almost immediately, as a seasoned surgeon would immediately diagnose appendicitis. She read this one page so fast that I was astounded by her professional level of legal knowledge and understanding of this long overdue issue's horrific, devastating, life-destroying nature. I'm talking about malignant and narcissistic abuse and attachment-based separation of child and mother. I do not mean to be overzealous. She's a fantastic attorney.

Mr. Flores was retained by my ex wife to conduct an “amicable” divorce. I paid him for said services. He did an amazing job of making the proceedings as animosity-laden as he could. Legal malpractice 101 is a very old scam: stall the guy who will be paying child support and/or spousal maintenance by enabling the signer to refuse to sign final papers for months at a time. Then hit the guy up for out of pocket cash on the pretense that the state will accept the receipts (they won’t), use shame, guilt, you name it, to secure as much cash as possible, then tell the guy, “sorry” when the state hits him for the full amount plus what he gave through the attorney so his now ex wife can refuse to get a job. Ruben tried this with me, but I saw him coming. I countered with an offer to make said payment on the condition that he swear an affidavit that if the state refused to accept the receipts he would reimburse me the $15,000 he was demanding. The state always refuses to accept receipts from divorce lawyers because they don’t get reimbursed for federal matching funds from receipts; just cash. When he declined, the game became apparent. It’s sleaze 101.

At best, a weak and incompetent attorney. From my conversations with three other attorneys, possibly corrupt, and from a conversation with an attorney from the firm that delegated my case over to Carl Brock, he, at a minimum, mishandled my case. For a competent attorney it would have been an open and shut case. Carl Brock "lost it", or as suggested to me, worse. I ended up losing everything "courtesy" of Carl Brock's handling my case. And he had the audacity to blame the jury. PATHETIC lawyer.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?

  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
