Matt and his team took on my car accident case after a couple lawyers I spoke to told me that I would have a difficult time recovering anything for my injuries due to "liability problems." Matt stuck by my side, answered all my questions, kept me in the loop and never waivered. After over a year, we finally got a GREAT settlement! I feel like I received justice and I thank Matt for that. I would (and have) strongly recommend Matt and his office to anyone looking for a personal injury lawyer that is always available and great at what he does.

Patricia listens. She consults her extensive range of contacts. She advocates for the balanced answer. When she's on your side, you know she has your back. Without Patricia, I feel like I'm walking into the jungle blindfolded. She's thought of the issues ahead, and prepares you for the journey. Run, don't walk, when you come to hire her.

Sunita was invaluable at helping us through a complex entity formation. She was always the one to follow up preemptively with us, ensuring we were informed and every possible hurdle was addressed prior to it becoming an issue. I'm not one to normally write a review, however this was simply an outstanding experience. Highly recommended.

I have been dealing with many lawyers and have never met a lawyer who was more interested in the case then my money. She was very reasonably priced and very honest. She has a passion for law and justice. I am very blessed to have stumbled upon Lucia Macdonald. She will remain my lawyer for life. Don't take my word, just get in contact with her and find out for yourself.

We had a complex real estate case. The law firm we hired initially had four attorneys work on our case in turns for over a year and made little progress. It turned out some cared more about their own interest and weren’t genuinely interested in ours. It was very frustrating as we had a strong case. We had to let the first law firm go. When Jim Ison took over our case, things quickly turned around. We found him to be very professional and compassionate. He was easy to work with, asked sharp questions, and listened carefully to what we had to say. He engaged us in every step of the process, kept us fully informed, and explained things to us very clearly. Jim was a very knowledgeable attorney and had good judgment. He prepared for our case diligently and carefully. His competence and work ethics quickly earned our trust. With the attorneys we had worked with previously, we got so stressed out. With Jim, we were so at ease knowing that he was going to take care of everything for us. I want to mention that the defendant in the case had some powerful connections and hired two law firms to defend him. At times, they tried to intimidate Jim. But, Jim was not afraid of threats, and fought back fearlessly on our behalf. He assured us that he would fight for us to the end regardless of who the opponent was and what law firms he used. Jim’s competence, integrity and professionalism made us feel protected and empowered. In the end, the case was settled to our satisfaction. Had we had Jim represent us from the very beginning, the outcome would have been even better. We were fortunate to have such a compassionate, competent and trustworthy attorney represent us.

Our construction company, RRA Construction, had to sue a non-paying client and Thomas came as a referral from another attorney for our case. If you are going through or have gone through a case, then you would know how imperative it is to be armed with a winning attorney. Even though we were stressed out of our minds, Thomas reassured us. He helped keep us calm throughout the process. RRA Construction was impressed with Thomas's extensive knowledge and in utilizing his services, we have become a better company in the end. We have Thomas to thank for helping us with our case.

At the time of this writing, Fred Geonetta practices in Oakland with his partner Kenneth Frucht, at Geonetta-Frucht LLP. Fred seems to take a more forward approach, while Ken seems to be more behind the scenes. This is only specific to my case. I had a wrongful termination whistleblower case under OSHA 11(c) and STAA. Fred's demeanor to me was kind and congenial, but he was also a straight shooter. He was concise and to the point, able to extract all the facts to make a very solid case. He had a fatherly demeanor with me, although maybe that's just because I am a young and tender man with little experience in this world. His style of arguing was very legit in mediation. I had pressed for him to file a complaint in Federal court, and he decided we should take a stab at mediation first. I usually hate mediation, arbitration, ADR, or anything else that doesn't make the Defendant feel the full force of the whip in litigation. However, he made it work--he made it work very well at that. He wasn't afraid to call a liar a liar, and pick apart the other side's argument which consisted mostly of lies, stories, fairytales and fabrications. I also liked his black Rolex, and for eight straight hours in settlement negotiations, I couldn't stop admiring the black Rolex. As time went on and the numbers got higher, I began to dream about purchasing a black Rolex just like this one. All semantics aside, this guy went to Hastings and seemed to have an especially good knowledge of STAA or the trucking industry. In addition to having an exceptional legal background, he has a background from his earlier days in the trucking industry. Thus, if you are a Plaintiff who also happens to be a commercial driver, he might be able to offer an insider's perspective on this. I could not say enough good things about Mr. Geonetta. The guy always showed patience, always responded to my emails, and always made good and clear points. He has this demeanor about him when interacting with the other side, that just kind of silences them and intimidates them. I think his law firm is the real deal. Look into his background. He reached amazing results in my wrongful termination case...I'm pretty sure, he deserves a 10 out of 10 rating on AVVO

Deanna represented my business interests in a partnership dispute matter in San Francisco, and was amazing to work with. She is smart, hard-working, and a first-rate advocate. She was well-organized with the document flow, always kept me updated, and went out of her way to "handhold" me through the process. That part I'll always remember :-) She also has a steel trap mind and memory for details. I would work with her again without hesitation.

I am extremely pleased with Ritsa, Matthew and Ann Marie's services. We interviewed four other attorneys for this case and right off the bat it was evident that this team cared genuinely about what they do. What sets this firm apart is their exceptional problem-solving skills, high level of organization and transparent communication style. Their top priority is building strong relationships and truly taking care of their clients. Throughout the process, the team consistently consulted with me, ensuring I was comfortable and fully understood their recommendations and actions every step of the way. They went above and beyond to make sure I was taken care of, standing by their word, remaining dedicated with integrity, maintaining tight communication, and working relentlessly to fight for a positive outcome in my case. The team is very generous with their time and hard-working. Ritsa and her team helped navigate a very burdensome situation and made me feel I was in safe hands. I am now much more informed about the legal landscape, thanks to their expert guidance. I will continue to rely on Ritsa, Matthew and Ann Marie for my legal needs, and will be enthusiastically recommending them to family and friends. This is an exceptional firm that I would highly recommend to anyone in need of legal services.

This is my lawyer. He has worked for me for the past two years, free of charge, as part of the Sgt. Shriver Custody Project at the Justice and Diversity Center. My ex had a team of lawyers, advocates, and a support system that caused me to nearly give up on ever having a relationship with my young children. His wise counsel made sure we didn't get nasty over trivial pleadings from the other side, we avoided name calling, and handle the situation with dignity and respect. So often things can't be taken back in the egregiously adversarial process, where winning at any price is often the goal of attorneys, but not Javier. Whose broad shoulders bear the brunt of numerous insidious attacks. His patience never wore thin, and ultimately we are winning. I get to spend precious time with my kids and the hurt feelings of my ex have subsided. Javier Bastidas is a long game player who never loses focus on the end zone, no matter how far away it seems.

My initial experience with the San Francisco eviction process was horrible (time consuming, frustrating, stressful and expensive) until I found Shauna Matlin. I was in the 5th month of an eviction case that should have taken less than 6 weeks. The attorney I hired had filed several requests for judgments, reconsiderations, and continuances that had little to no chance of winning and did not make any sense in my situation. It finally dawned on me that something was wrong and I needed to shop for a new attorney in San Francisco. I spoke to a few attorneys before selecting Shauna Matlin. During our first conversation on the phone she had no reservations reviewing information about my case from the San Francisco Court website to provide me a better assessment of what was happening and why I was not winning any judgments. Shauna explained to me in detail the current issues and what she could and could not do. It was clear by our conversation; she knew San Francisco eviction law, the requirements to get an eviction and had the savvy to work the system. Shauna took my case that had a number of issues and negotiated a settlement within 3 weeks that resulted in an eviction one week after the settlement. Shauna Matlin is amazing!!! I can not say enough about Shauna Matlin, I will definitely be using her for all my tenant related issues.

Doug was a referral from two trusted, totally independent sources - a rarity when I asked my network of people who would be a good employment lawyer. He did not disappoint. His knowledge was far reaching in the specific area that we needed some consultation on and he provided not just a knowledge of the employment labor laws in our state but also in the areas we were expanding into. In addition, he provided not just what was required but what was recommended to address parity among the industry and best practices in general. He was extremely helpful, easy to work with and I would not hesitate to work with him again and to refer him to others.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
