Worst communication from this legal team. I felt like I had to request information over and over again. I’m still waiting on information. I called and messaged them with no reply. I’m almost certain my case is nearly done but they’ve told me nothing.

I found Ghitterman, Ghitterman & Feld about 5 years ago when the law firm that was representing our son literally dropped the ball with a workmans comp. Case. They took right over and got us the results that we needed for our son. Our situation is different than normal where ours is a 3 case situation. We settled the first case which was the workman's comp case and we were very pleased with the results. We have just settled the 2nd case which we initially believed was not going to be a case, but we are now waiting for a settlement check in the mail and very, very pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Last case is in the works and I have no doubt that we will get the results we hope for on this one as well. They made us feel heard, included us in all steps and decisions and fought hard for us as their clients. 5 STAR SERVICE AND REPRESENTATION all the way. Thank you Ghitterman, Ghitterman & Feld for all you've done and continue to do for our son.

Timothy and I have been colleagues for a couple of years now. Without hesitance, I can say that he is an incredibly hard worker and excellent attorney. In my opinion, Timothy's standout quality has to be his ability to unburden his clients of complicated legal processes, while genuinely caring enough to keep them fully informed of progress and options.

Early last year I brought over my very beautiful Argentine girlfriend for an extended stay here in the States on her tourist visa. Then I did something crazy......I married her! :) :) We hired Jaffe law firm and worked almost exclusively with Kraig in getting my new wife legal status here. I am a local business man here in Santa Barbara and in the past years I have used other law firms in town for different reasons and I have to say that this was the most pleasant experience with a lawyer ever! Courteous, timely, good and prompt communication, knowledgeable, thorough, ......I think you get the idea, Money well worth spent!!! For our personal circumstances, every step of the governmental process went off without a single glitch. We are very very happy with our decision to hire them! My wife now has a green card, SS#, CA drivers license, and a job working for a local corporation using her degree from Buenos Aires!! Kraig, we thank you so much!

My wife and I came over from the UK this year and everyone back home and here in the States said that acquiring a work visa and residency was a mine field. Then we had the good fortune to meet Arno. From the first meeting we became confident and relaxed about the procedure and we just followed Arno's advice. Just six months later and I have US residency. Diligent and professional, Arno is one of the true Gentleman attorneys who we now call a good friend.

I hired this man to represent me in a divorce. He required a $10,000.00 retainer, and somehow when I asked for my file back, there was absolutely nothing in the file but a printed Google map of the Portland area. He would not return my retainer to me, saying it had been used up even though there is no proof of work completed, especially for $10,000. For further context, I did not contact Paul very often because I figured if there would be something to know, he would tell me. The opposing side(my husband) didn’t turn in his PPDs. Which means Paul didn’t do anything in the best interest of his client(me.) I do not recommend this attorney due to my experience.

Wilson and Pettine are a world-class legal team. They have represented me in a highly acrimonious divorce involving significant custody and property issues. I have been very pleased with the outcomes, but even more so with the firm's approach: very professional, prompt, thorough, communicative, and detail-oriented. Their communication has been outstanding, keeping me informed of everything and responding very quickly to my inquiries. Throughout, I have felt that they were listening to my priorities and that I was fully in charge of the process. I use the word "team" advisedly: it is not just the attorneys, but also their fellow professionals such as forensic accountants, plus the outstanding administrative staff, which makes for a formidable combination. Concerning cost: good legal help is not cheap, but W&P were very clear up front about what the case might cost, have been careful to explain the additional costs that might be incurred by certain moves, have provided carefully itemized statements, and have been judicious about not arguing certain points of the case when the possible gain wasn't worth the cost to me. I have heard many horror stories from people who went through mediation or had inferior attorneys, and ended up with unsatisfactory outcomes; I am very grateful to be represented by Wilson & Pettine. I have recommended this firm to several other individuals who were, unfortunately, in need of similar legal assistance, and will continue to do so.

Not the most compassionate lawyer. Did a consultation on a divorce case a little over a year ago. Had very little patience, irritable, did not seem very knowledgeable and just overall not a great experience. Different lawyer was able to succeed in what I was hoping for through my divorce despite Ms. Ferreira’s belief that it wouldn’t succeed. The consultation request itself took over 10 days to happen from the moment her office was contacted by me. Her staff was nice though, they were very pleasant in their correspondence with me. I’d recommend someone else if you’re looking for a divorce lawyer.

I hired this attorney for a consult regarding my mother's care (or lack thereof) in a skilled nursing facility in Santa Barbara. She asked several questions but seemed to have trouble focusing and often sighed or said "I don't understand". Professional advice was not forthcoming, and I eventually had to terminate the consult as it was becoming more and more a waste of time. The cost was high, but that is not the complaint. This attorney was recommended to me by Senior Planning Services but it appears that these recommendations are part of a small group of business that loyally recommend each other rather than prioritize what is best for the client. I would not recommend this attorney for pursuing solution based advice.

Dallas is an extremely skilled elder law expert and has 20+ years of experience specifically with Medi-Cal. This extends far beyond the preparation of the application: she understands the inherent nuances of a very complicated program and is able to analyze and advise you as a client based upon your personal profile. I would not have been able to apply on behalf of my father without her guidance and help! We hired Dallas to help us file an application and she did so much more: She worked with us on a thorough strategy, took us through the process and went above and beyond to work directly with my fathers' nursing home and other entities that needed to provide us with back up documentation. She understands the system and the loopholes. She is a lifesaver and so incredibly knowledgeable in her field. I am so thankful that we started the process with a professional expert. She will save you money and bring you great benefit and peace of mind. I don't know how we could have done it without her! Thank you so much Dallas, we mean it! I would highly recommend her services to anyone needing assistance in the Elder Law field.

Ms. Atkins is a very special type of attorney. She took the time to explain the process and applicable laws so that I could make informed and safe decisions. Even though it was possibly not the most cost-effective manner of proceeding from her point of view, Ms. Atkins worked to connect with me on a personal level. She took the time to listen to me as I walked through the background of my experiences, and treated me as though my feelings and needs were of utmost importance. She helped me to set up complex and varied health care documents (including advanced health care directives, HIPAA documents, and others) while avoiding pitfalls I would never have been able to identify on my own. She was honest and forthright, but also kind and compassionate...truly the perfect blend of humanity and skill.

I hired Beatriz Flores as my lawyer for an emergency custody order involving my 4yr old son with autism and severe ADHD. I had 5 days to prepare a formal declaration and file paperwork to the courts of which I didn't know how. I explained to her that I am attending school and would be receiving money through loans and financial aid. I told her I had $500 now but I would receive more money in one week. She stated that she needed $2000 but she would work with me for now until I could get the rest of the money. She agreed to be my attorney took my $500 and wrote me a receipt. She then stopped answering my calls. . She finally answered one of my calls about 36hrs after my first call. She stated that in order to continue working she needed more payment. I stated that I would have her money in by the end of the next week and she again agreed to work with me and wait until the end of the week. She had me sign her payment contract and told me she would finish some work I needed done before the next Monday. She again stopped responding to my calls. I had until Tuesday morning at 8:15am to file my paperwork and she wouldn't respond. I ended up staying up literally all night Monday night filling out legal paperwork and writing my declaration to the courts. I managed to serve the other parent by myself end up doing her entire job. I spoke to her again on Tuesday after my deadline and she said she didn't we think we had enough time to file. I told her I had already filed. At this point she said she no longer wanted to represent me because I was rushing things too much. I said that was fine but I wanted my $500 back. She proceeded to keep my $500 and write me a bill for another $725... long story short I've contacted the California Bar Association as well as my local arbitration office. I wasn't granted my emergency order because of this lawyers lack of professionalism. She could have rejected my case and let me find another lawyer but instead she strung me a long in order to keep my measly $500. Save your money.

Penny Clemmons is really expensive, but I felt like I got my money's worth when I met with her for our first session. We spoke at the end of that conversation about how I might continue to get support from her, and that included emailing her for references and so forth before moving on to mediation. Except that when I emailed her, she didn't respond. At all. (Which was consistent with some of the non-responsiveness hassle I experienced in trying to get the meeting in the first place.) I'm working with another lawyer right now, and I'm not sorry about the money I spent, but if you imagine that she might work with you in an ongoing, reliable way, you might be frustrated.

Ms. Clemmons does not know family law or California requirements for child support. After wasting tens of thousands on mediation, I learned from the Ca Dept of Child Support that all of Ms. Clemmons recommendations were not enforceable. My children forever will suffer because Ms. Clemmons lacks the professional integrity to advice prospective clients that she lacks expertise. Her shingle's out, she bills regularly and charges interest. I wish my two minor children who are not getting support could do the same. Shame on you, Ms. Clemmons.

This lawyer represented me in a medical malpractice case. He was the most unprofessional attorney and appeared to side with the other side during our depositions. He was unsupportive of me and was always late to appointments or wouldn't show up at all. He was negligent to the point that he neglected to file papers on my behalf and missed a deadline which made me lose my case. I ended up suing him and his legal malpractice carrier settled with me. I would never. Working with him was one of the most frustrating and negative experiences of my life.

I went to him for a family law issue. After spending about $15,000.00 I was not closer to having the legal agreement I needed for myself and my children. He boasted that he was well liked by the judge and the other attorney was afraid of him. Being emotionally fragile from the divorce situation, I felt taken advantage of in the respect that he knew my most important issue was my child custody and even after all that money I did not have a custody agreement, just a bunch of papers saying he did this and she did that. Worthless. Come to find out he's not so well respected or even that bright for that matter. Do your self a favor and stay clear of this person.

Does not follow the agreed upon procedures. Does not prepare documents properly. We paid him to appeal on a procedure, for which we had 90 days to appeal and he never did it. His time is more valuable than yours, so he will not return phone calls. Everything is strictly filtered through his secretary. Recently through another attorney, we learned that we could have demanded our money back from the whole case, since he did not accomplished any of what he was hired for. This happened about 8+ years ago, so it may be too late to request money back. Mediocre attorney, but he thinks he’s great along with hid secretary.

My 23 yr old daughter was involved in an automobile accident with another 65-year-old woman. This woman had major knee problems five or six years prior to the accident and have seen doctors at least 30 times within those years if not more and was a candidate for knee replacement but was unable to go through with doctors advice due to cost as she has zero health insurance . John hunter represented this woman who spoke very little English and my daughter was the defendant . He not only tried to track my daughter down to find out her insurance limit when she had moved out of Santa Barbara but he started to harass me come to my place of business call me incessantly. finally I told him that if he contacted me one more time I will file a harassment suit against him. He eventually stopped . Defendants lawyer determines that plaintive had purjured herself over and over again. My guess is that she was guided by her attorney-John Hunter - since she has an education of a first grader and seemed very confused during her deposition. I see from his history that he has lost his license during a period of time and my hope is that he never will be able to practice again. Do not hire this man!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?

Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
