Horrible lawyer! Worst one I've ever worked with. I had a closing and he showed up an hour late to the closing. Everyone had to wait for him, in the end to save time the title company guy walked me through the papers because he was the only one who wasn't there. Then afterwards, the deed was sent to him and I called the office multiple times to get in contact with him since I wanted my deed to my apartment (i never even got a copy from him). I left multiple messages and never got a call back, I emailed multiple times and never got an email back. I still don't have my deed, so if you read this review Peter, I would like my deed sent to me promptly.

Dan Smyth is very professional, knowledgeable and caring. He walked me through the whole process and explained everything I needed to know in detail. He took his time and I was able to contact him whenever I needed. Dan went above and beyond and I felt he was truly genuine and honest. I would highly recommend him and his firm to my family and friends.

Best intentions gone bad. When I became the victim of wire fraud (pig butchering, FBI) amid my filing, this firm worried more about how it looked to the judge than standing for me in a way that evoked support and a solution. My nightmare continues after two years with no certain outcome and so much loss. My billing was just shy of six figures. A true let down.

Was recommended to Steven J. Cooper through our real estate attorney and hired him to represent us in buying our home. He did great work, and worked weekends to help us with our closing. Was easily accessible, and either him or Debbie were quick to respond and help us through the more confusing parts of the process. However, one conversation ruined our entire experience. Our target closing date was set for August 31, 2020. Our mortgage rate expired at the end of the day on August 31st, which Steven was aware of. At that point, our rate lock would have been in effect for 60 days and there would be a fee to extend our mortgage rate beyond August 31st. We got our Closing Disclosure Package (approval to close) from our mortgage lender on August 24, and Steven responded saying that the closing would likely be after Labor Day due to scheduling issues. Over the phone, I asked Steven for more details regarding the scheduling issues, and he told me that he had 20-21 closings scheduled in the next two weeks and that he would not be able to fit us in (amongst his other clients). We let Steven know that there would be a cost associated from our mortgage lender to extend our rate lock (over $1k) and asked him to cover it since we were being charged additional money due to his lack of availability. He let us know via email that the charge would be our responsibility. When we called him to discuss this, the conversation escalated. He asked us if we had voted for Obama as a segue to get us to understand a law that kept the approval to close and the actual signing a couple days apart. I let him know the question was inappropriate. He then specifically used the term "cute" towards me in a sexist manner, saying that no matter how cutely I phrased things he wasn't going to cover the extension fee. When I told him it was not ok to speak to me using that language, he said that he didn't realize that the word was sexist and then asked for a list of words that he wasn't allowed to use during the conversation. When we pushed the matter further about how his lack of availability was causing us to have to pay over an additional $1k, he threatened to not represent us at our closing (which was theoretically only a week away). At the end of the day, it all worked out - we got our closing date without having to pay the fee since Steven figured out a time that worked for him on his end. If Steven had just taken a minute to figure out his schedule (because there was a solution available since we ended up closing on time without incurring a fee from our mortgage company), there would have been a lot of stress saved on everyone's end. Outside of the above conversation, Steven and his assistant Debbie were pleasant to work with.

Steve is the best real estate attorney anyone could ask for. He is prompt, diligent and always available through email and phone to answer any questions I had. He found issues in the title that all the attorneys for the previous owners had failed to identify and demanded the seller fix them before closing. Overall a very pleasant experience working with Steve.

Steven was our attorney for the recent purchase of our apartment. He was on the ball all the time, very friendly and courteous whilst dealing with almost 3 months of closing delays. He helped us with every step providing advise at every decision point. Steven was always available unless he was at a closing even working in the weekends to get us the necessary information. If you are looking for a real estate attorney here in New York, look no further. We will be sure to use Steven’s services at the next real estate transaction.

Mr. Jones represented me in my divorce. He dragged the divorce on for two years to benitfit financially. He did not look into my ex- husbands assets and there for years later I found out my husband has a pension that was not claimed. This information was sitting in boxes that wete in Mr. Jones office. Mr. Jones submitted papers to the court that I had signed asking him to add and change some facts. He did not change this pappers and I lost my retirement because of it. He was condesending in his attitude towards me. I found MR. Jones at a group that was suspose to help people and found out later he was kick out of this group because he had hurt other woman in the same manner.

I hired Amy Bellatoni. She helped me write a letter for an application process that was denied with a 30 day explanation period in which to submit a statement. At that time I tried to contact Amy. She does not know how to pick up a phone. It was like squeezing water out of a rock for info. I emailed her for info which took all day back and forth for info that could have been solved in a 5 minute phone call. I have since attained another attorney and was told she should have never let me write the statement on my own. So if you like having communication with your lawyer I would definitely stay away from Amy Bellatoni.

To be clear, my review is regarding a consultation with Ms. Bellantoni. I did not retain her services. Initially, I was very impressed with Ms. Bellantoni's qualifications and even more so after I spoke with her regarding a discrimination issue with my employer. At the time, I filed a discrimination charge with the federal government which is a long process. While the charge was being processed I contacted Ms. Bellantoni. She was very pleasant, knowledgable, and supportive of my side. I emailed her a volume of supporting documents and she reviewed everything and followed up with me about a week later. We spoke at length regarding how she would proceed if I retained her services. Our conversation ended with her telling me that once I received a decision from the federal government, I should let her know, at which point we could proceed with filing a lawsuit. Frankly, she buoyed my confidence in a positive outcome, which is why I was so disappointed when she ignored all of my attempts to follow-up with her months later as previously discussed. I contacted her several times by phone and email and she never responded back. I even expressed confusion to her answering service, saying I already consulted with Ms. Bellantoni and was instructed to contact her once I reached this point. Unfortunately, I was not given any explanation. While I cannot speak on Ms. Bellantoni's performance as an attorney, I can say that it was completely unprofessional to leave me hanging the way she did. I am not an unreasonable person; I understand lawyers are very busy people and schedules change, and she may have had a legitimate reason to recuse herself from representing me. Nonetheless, all it would have taken her is one minute of her time to respond to any one of my emails or voicemails to say just that and I would of accepted her response and moved on. Instead, ignoring me produced this negative review.

I was struck by a car as I was standing on a sidewalk in front of a small business. The driver was an elderly woman. I hired Michael Crowley to represent me in seeking compensation for medical expenses, and pain and suffering. He estimated a settlement of $100,000. He claimed to have pursued the case with the driver's insurance company. After 2 years he pressed me with $15,000, and no written record of his time or funds from the insurance company or defendant. Additionally, he claimed the defendant had recently died so the case could not be pursued. Several months later the defendant was found living in the same community.

After closing, we discovered that our house was not a single family home, that we had a residential mortgage on a commercial dwelling, that because of it's class b status listed on the title report we could not renovate and live in the house. Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
