Valerie handled an appeal of my family law case. An exceptionally professional approach; superbly timely actions and swift responses to my inquiries, laid out the whole process with options before we started, stuck to the plan and won the case. Suggested a new attorney for me to handle matters past appeal, and made sure we've connected. I am very pleased with her work ethics, knowledge, methods and obviously, the outcome. Cannot recommend enough.

Mr. Farmer referred his client to me for help with his client's bankrupt debtor in Southern California. During the course of my assignment, Mr. Farmer was always accessible, responded promptly to my inquiries and kept the client fully informed as to the progress of the matter. His input and background information on the matter proved very helpful in resolving the matter favorably. I recommend Mr. Farmer and consider him extremely competent and a man of considerable integrity.

This attorney took on a mess of unbelievable proportions. He is a bankruptcy lawyer who took on two other attorney firms filing BS claims against me and my business. He beat them both hands down through motion summary, in fact he made them look like fools, which they were. He is a no nonsense, competent attorney with morals, determination and conviction. He never allowed his opposition to stray away from the case itself by creating bogus misdirection and needless expense. It is unfortunate I had to meet him in such a terrible circumstance, however if you must file for bankruptcy protection, he is the one to call hands down. Thank you Arnie! Rick

I was introduced to Troy Courage via referral from WSBA's Moderate Means program -- of which Troy is generously a participant -- as I found myself in a situation ultimately requiring filing for personal bankruptcy. In his representation, Troy was always the true professional with a wonderful "bedside" ("client-side"?) manner, including when my case required unforeseen extra hours in the courtroom. In short, it was most helpful to have not only Troy's expertise to deal with the court filings, but also his steady hand and ability to connect with his clients.

Mr. Hulten, or as I now call him, Kyle, recently handled an insurance-based issue for me. I received emails and phone calls regarding the status of my claim almost daily over an orduous period of seven months. Because Kyle has a unique ability to work with a variety of business people and because of his highly-developed personal skills as well as character and law-accumen he was able to resolve my claim and provide me with a much larger settlement than I had originally envisioned. Kyle treats everyone with such care and obvious passion that his likability, even amongst those he opposes, (I believe) helped me achieve a far greater than expected result. I felt as if Kyle was constantly thinking outside the box in order find methods to lessen my day-to-day strain and general frustration with opposing company. I would unequivocally recommend Kyle to anyone looking for an unassuming, gracious, unique and sharp attorney. Kyle went out of his way for me, kept my fees down when contractually he could have risen them and fought to get what he felt I deserved while simultaneously helping me to understand the "why" and the "how" behind the process; even going so far as to draw up financial models unique to my case. Kyle will be my attorney for years to come!

I got rear-ended by a person who was clearly at-fault and owned up to it, but whose insurance company made it very difficult to process my case. As my attorney, Ms. Owen-Tara was very supportive, kept me apprised of the process, and worked hard on my behalf especially in getting me covered medically. She is a professional who is honest, smart, and makes sure her client knows how to handle themselves in a legal battle. I recommend her highly.

I have worked with Matt for the past three years on several very sensitive, high-profile and complex real estate transactions. He is extremely knowledgeable in his field and very comprehensive and thorough in his work product. More importantly, he is an intuitive deal maker that is able to understand the needs of the opposing party while achieving the best results for his client. His style creates the perception of a win- win situation for all, thus insuring the successful completion of the transaction. In short, he is just really good lawyer and a really good guy.

I feel compelled to write this review because I can't say enough about Hugh. He advocated for me, returned all calls/messages/emails - no matter what day of the week, kept it real, didn't blow fluff, explained the processes, remembered and retained vital information, let me talk while he patiently listened. When it came time for mediation, he let me know what to expect, how it was going to work, what the other side was going to do and say. And he was never wrong! During our mediation, he explained the who/what/why, what we were going to do, consulted with his colleagues to bounce off ideas, and conducted himself in a professional, yet relaxed and relatable manner. It is hard to find an attorney who believes in you, who talks your language, knows how to steer the conversation to what is important instead of worrying about the he said/she said little stuff. I never felt rushed or unimportant. It is SO rare to find an attorney who treats you like a human being while fighting what seems like a Goliath. I would hands down, wholeheartedly recommend Hugh to anyone who has employment issues. He will go to bat for you. You will NOT feel like just another number or case. The whole process was simple, even living 3.5 hours away from his office. Do not be afraid to hire an out-of-town attorney because Hugh is worth it. If you want a true advocate who gets stuff done, hire Hugh Barber.

After being arrested and charged with two felonies that I did not commit, my wife researched Seattle area criminal defense attorneys and then contacted Mckay-Chadwell on the recommendation of a friend. I feel very fortunate that we hired Mckay-Chadwell and that my fate was placed in the competent, professional hands of attorney Donald (D. Jack) Guthrie. I needed someone to defend me and that's exactly what Donald Guthrie did, he defended me. From our very first meeting I was impressed with his professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail as I was in the midst of enduring the most difficult four months in my life. Donald Guthrie helped to guide me through this worst of times as smoothly as possible. He has a firm grasp on what the prosecutorial techniques and motivations entail and that's a crucial element in criminal defense. He was patient with the prosecutors when he needed to be and aggressive when the circumstances called for it. Additionally, Donald Guthrie didn't just tell me "how it was going to be", he honestly and respectfully listened to my thoughts and concerns. Thanks to Mckay-Chadwell and attorney Donald Guthrie's excellent legal defense my case ultimately resulted in a full dismissal of all charges against me. I would highly recommend Mckay-Chadwell and talented attorney Donald (D.Jack) Guthrie to anyone who is in need of a criminal defense attorney.

I had specific questions related to my liability, especially in emergency catastrophic medical care situations for a person I would be co-sponsoring to become a permanent resident in the U.S. I had spoken to several other immigration attorneys in the L.A. area and none showed the command of the relevant law that Robert Foss demonstrated in our 45-minute session. He cited the only relevant case law, and referenced attending a recent AILA conference where the issues similar to those I raised were discussed. He also provided guidance related to what medical benefits would be available to the immigrant and whether or not they would trigger liability issues for a person signing the I-864 form. Overall, he listened carefully, answered my questions thoughtfully and knowledgeably, and was professional in demeanor. After several attorneys had failed to provide that level of service, I was greatly appreciative of his assistance.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
