Terrible law firm. The firm wanted to charge me $ 15,000 regarding Medicaid qualifications for my dad. Then they tried to pressure me to retain them,Dennis McCoy tried to put pressure to retain me. I then said I will do some more research before I make a decision. They called me in to discuss if I was going to retain them and charged me $300 for nothing.Beware Found another law firm to do it for $ 5000.

Mr. Shapiro's interests and alliances are not first and foremost with his own client, he listens with one ear. Mr. Shapiro's interests are solely for himself, it is more important to him to play the game and stay in good with the other attorneys. I had no marital money in my control. My son had to pay his attorney fee for me. I should have received child support and maintenance to ensure the well being of myself and four children. He held the original receipts for costly but necessary house repairs (i.e. burst water pipes during winter, etc.) which I had to charge a.k.a. go in debt and borrow son’s money to complete necessary repairs for we had no running water, heat and clean drinkable water and the house also needed to be in sellable condition. Mr. Shapiro likes to go on many vacations, and is unavailable to reach during crucial time. He allowed the defendant's attorney to also become the real estate attorney regarding sale of the marital residence and thus giving the defendant’s attorney full control over of the house sale agreements and closing. Before and during the closing we had an issue with a verified fully operating swimming pool (house was sold as is, swimming pools aren't even to be included in sale of house, in real estate swimming pools are considered as “no value”). Mr. Shapiro allowed the defendants attorney to obtain $10,000.00 for pool at closing which I did not sign the agreement and this should have never legally been allowed (conflict of interest). Also, real estate contract stated I was allowed to remain in the house for three days after the sale, which was changed to zero days at closing. The check I was handed to me at closing was after the close of banking business hours. I had to deposit the check for I did not have enough money for the bank to cash it against. This left me out in the street of NY for days. Mr. Shapiro held all the original house repair receipts for the marital residence that were paid for by son and was to be recouped at house closing which he did not. My son also had to pay Mr. Shapiro’s attorney fees for I had no control over my half of marital assets, which was lost due to having to fire Mr. Shapiro after the house closing. Mr. Shapiro hired the defendants attorney to sue me for more fees that were not timely even legally billable. Mr. Shapiro also allowed the defendants attorney to hold my half of the marital assets for years allowing them to gamble and make huge amounts of interest on my money to line their pockets, while my children and I did without. With serious medical emergency surgery at the time for me to endure, there was no protection from Mr. Shapiro when I requested and required a will to be set in place for to ensure the rightful inheritance to my children of my legal 50 percent of the marital residence and assets that were not yet disbursed and at high risk to all go back to the defendant. Too much aggravation etc., this is certainly not appropriate attorney behavior and attorney code of conduct, especially for an attorney that was hired to fight and protect My rights and interests as a Female (Person) Plaintiff; filed grievances on both attorneys. Beware!!! Mr. Shapiro must return $10,000.00 to my son immediately!!! No response is Not a Defense!

Tried calling several times for representation ,but he never responded and when I finally got someone in the phone the guy who answered was super rude and stated “Mr. Stein does not accept sales calls”.I responded “ sir I’m in need of representation this is not a sales call”. He repeated “no sales calls” and then hung up. I was totally confused by what happened, but if this is a suggestion of his services well I’d be in trouble.

I hired this attorney for real estate needs in purchasing my new home. The attorney and his assistant Michelle have done nothing but made my experience a nightmare. There is zero communication and in order to get things done I had to handle everything that I could myself. Michelle was rude and had an attitude through out this process and almost made me lose the house I was buying. She has screwed up a number of times and try’s to put the blame on someone else claiming she never received the paperwork. They are unprofessional and unorganized. They are never in the office on regular business days when they should. It’s hard to get a phone call back after leaving several messages.

I used Larry and Michele for the the closing of my first house. Larry, and his assistant Michele were amazing. They did an unbelievable job and the whole process was easy on my side. They answered all my questions (which there are a lot of, when your a first time home buyer!) in a timely manner and with great professional guidance. I would recommend them to anyone looking for an attorney.

Everything went perfect and I would highly recommend using Mr. Spada and his Assistant Michele is excellent at the setup and response time of any and all questions you may have.

Jean has been representing me in my divorce case. She is very sharp, articulate, and organized. She is a realist and does not sugar coat anything. I am very happy and grateful to have her as my lawyer. She works endlessly with great communication. She is certainly a veteran in the game. Jean has been very compassionate during a very stressful time in my life. Alber Law, and Jean has been by my side for a long time, and while my divorce is not over yet, there is no other firm or lawyer I would want representing me. She is also well respected in the court room because she speaks the truth which says a lot about her countless hours of work in the courtroom. While I do not want to speak about my case because it is not over, I eventually will. Things are on the right track for my children and I, and I owe it all to Alber Law and Jean Mercurio!

This lawyer is the most unprofessional attorney I have ever met in my life. He thinks just because he wears a suit and has a degree it gives him the right to talk down to his clients. On a recent court date and I hired an attorney that Michael Ross works with. Unfortunately, the lawyer I hired had an emergency and had to send Michael Ross in his place. When he came into the court room and called my name, we went outside for a conference. He told me a some information that didnt make sense or pertain to me at all. and I requested that he just get it post-pone until my actual attorney could show up. He literally got in my face and YELLED at me, and than ran away and didn't show back up for another 90 minutes. When he did show back up he was short and cocky with my father and I. After court let out he walked down the hall way and screamed very loudly "I THINK YOU GUYS ARE MORONS!" I was in shock and in turn I called him a less than favorable name which I regret now. I would not recommend anyone hire this man because his attitude sucks. I never met him before in my life and he treated me worse than dirt on his shoe.

I hired Phil Castrovinci for my custody/adjust child support trial. It cost me approximately $30,000, plus I was forced to pay the OPPOSING lawyer $7,500 on top of the $30,000 at the end. The Judge wrote us saying, “Defendant (my ex) included a Statement of Net Worth for the Court’s consideration, which gave a more comprehensive picture of the Defendant’s financial circumstances. Plaintiff (me) did not include a Statement of Net Worth which limited the Court’s examination of his financial circumstances. Accordingly, the Court shall award of counsel fees in the sum of $7.500.00 payable by Plaintiff to Defendant.” Not only was I refused custody of my 14 year old son, who was begging to live with me, I was somehow forced to pay over $10,000 in ‘retro’ child support when I had paid, in full and on time, what I was required to by law up until the trial. I sat in court and watched my ex and her lawyer commit perjury by telling lies to The Court, under oath. Sitting in court I had, in my hands, proof they were lying and Phil’s response was, “It doesn’t matter”. The evidence was not presented to the Judge and I got nothing out of this case except a large amount of debt and disappointment. As stated by other reviewers, you’ll be promised the moon and don’t hold your breath waiting for return calls/e-mails. When I was fortunate enough to get a rare response from an e-mail or a call, direct/specific questions that I had asked were dodged. The ‘glowing’ reviews here seem to completely contradict my experience, along with multiple others. On Google reviews, I see that a family member left a 5-star review for Phil’s associate. It make we wonder about the validity of these positive reviews. Hire at your own risk!!!

Paul was our attorney when we bought our first home. Paul's secretary would answer the phone and always leave him messages but I could easily go 3 weeks without speaking to him. After we closed we had a special clause in our contract that allowed the sellers to remain in the house for a per diem. It took 2 months for the sellers to move out, and during that time when we wanted updates from Paul, we heard from him a total of zero times. I finally found a way through to Paul and he assured me all was going well and after the sellers moved out he'd alert the other attorney to release the funds that were in Escrow. Several weeks later we have not received our money and Paul has yet to return any of the dozens upon dozens of phone calls and messages we have left him.

I became skeptical and contacted the other insurance company. Against the law they decided to disclose that he has cashed out.. When I reached out to him and asked why? He denied it in 2007 saying I blew the case. And never heard from him again. I was injured and so were my 2 children. Of any inquiries about Garry Robbinsson please notify me through email.

Didn't return calls, then when the statue of limitations was almost up he discharged my case, leaving me to scramble to find another lawyer to clean up the mess he left me with. His excuse because I couldn't find a doctor to take over my care because of how bad the previous doctor messed me up he couldn't represent me because there wasn't proff of damage, the proff was staring him in the face in the xrays and the fact the other doctors didn't want to touch my case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
