Ryan and his team did an outstanding job of handling the intricacies of my case. He was very thorough in gathering the details needed for the case and empathetic towards my concerns and desires. I had worked with a couple of different attorneys in the past and none can be compared to the professionalism I received from Ryan. Throughout the entire process, he was patient and explained things in laymen terms so that I could understand without having to learn a bunch of legal jargon. Ryan handled my case with superior knowledge of the details as if he had experienced the events himself. I was impressed with the way he was able to recount details with ease and aggressively defend me at the same time. I was really nervous since I resided out of state but I feel extremely blessed to have found Ryan! I promise you will not be disappointed. Finding a good attorney should not be stressful since the reason you need one is probably already stressful enough. With his experience and background, I would go as far to say Ryan is the best in the state. I hope I don't need to but I would hire him again in a heartbeat if I did.

I was referred to Ryan Borges by my cousin. I had consulted with two other lawyers and was unable to find the right fit until I met with Mr. Borges. He quickly took my case and worked with my ex-wife's lawyer to de-escalate our divorce proceedings from a "she takes all" to a "give and take" situation. In the end, Mr. Borges facilitated a divorce that ended much more positive than it began. He was financially understanding and worked to stay within my extremely limited budget. I would recommend Mr. Borges to any person who is contemplating divorce.

I hired Ryan back in December to conduct discovery and finish out the rest of my divorce. E-mails would take several days to get a response, if they even got one at all, and he refused to submit formal discovery requests until 6 months of pestering him to do so. He only made a few informal requests which cannot be compelled and essentially are meaningless and caused a huge setback. The unwillingness to conduct discovery also damaged my case by causing the arguments to be disposed from waiting so long, so some of the discovery I was seeking can no longer be sought. In the six months that I had him as counsel, he accomplished very little of anything at all. In particular, I needed him to get a written temporary order signed (the temporary order was already agreed on, it only needed to be drafted at that point) by the court and while he did get an order in, the language is incorrect and was not signed by the judge, so no enforceable order exists in my case now 7 months after I had retained him. In addition, he would repeatedly pressure me to agree to a settlement when discovery had not been completed and became very frustrated when I refused to. The breaking point was when he wanted another $2,500 deposit to finish out the divorce (at that point discovery STILL wasn't even started), even though he had taken my case on a flat rate with full knowledge that I had intended to take it to trial when we agreed on a fee. I was willing to renegotiate our fee, but not another $2,500 considering little had actually been done. I ended up going back to my previous attorneys since their flat rate was the same price. Really, I should have stuck with them in the first place and saved myself the $2,500 I paid Ryan, since they would have handled everything up to this point and moving forward. I can't recommend Ryan at all for family law cases and recommend that you to consider other options.

Emile Harmon - or his office - lost my contract agreement with his office two or three times after I signed it ... and blamed me. Emile Harmon repeatedly failed to return phone calls after he said to get in touch with him ... and blamed his (personally competent) paraprofessional. Emile Harmon repeatedly told me he had physical therapists for me to go to after my injury but failed to return phone calls asking for their names. Later, he lied and told the AZ bar, where he has been reported for at least the second time, that he never said he had names of physical therapists. Emile Harmon told me that he would be able to get a demand letter for my case sent within three months. Four months later, after numerous unanswered requests to see the demand letter sent to the party being sued, he sent me the letter. It had numerous errors. I asked if we could fix it. He said we could. I asked how we could do that if it had been sent. He said it hadn't yet been sent after all. When I couldn't abide Emile Harmon's lack of professionalism any longer, I asked for my case to be transferred to another lawyer in the firm. Emile Harmon resigned my case saying, in part, that without physical therapy, my case isn't worth that much anyway. When he resigned it, he left me in a position where at least of some my medical bills have not yet been paid from my insurance (since his paraprofessional asked me to send him the release form from my insurance before I signed anything - I have no idea when she sent it out after that) and they are about to be reported to credit bureaus as unpaid. I reported his behavior to the AZ Bar, where he is currently being investigated. Update: I also engaged another attorney who, despite Emile Harmon's predictions, got me a large settlement. This attorney charged me only 29%, as opposed to Emile Harmon's ask of 40%. When I saw here that Emile Harmon had been sanctioned by the AZ Bar once, I should have paid attention and immediately engaged another attorney. This is now a decision I deeply regret.

Emile Harmon first struck me as a "no b.s." kind of man: he told me exactly what hurdles I was up against, the honest likelihood of me getting full custody back, and at first he said he didn't think he could win the case for me and so I should hire someone else! Since when do lawyers say that? He was amazingly straightforward, and we all REALLY respect that. He also likes a challenge though, since he decided to take my case, after really interacting with me during the course of the free consult: he asked tons of relevant questions, reviewed documents I provided, and listened respectfully to my questions and concerns (and those of my mother, who wanted grandparental rights) and then answered them honestly. In the course of that one hour consultation he managed to do what 7 other lawyers before him could not: answer the legal questions we had without misleading us about the difficulty of our case yet not quashing our hopes, assess the state of our case accurately, and even form a basic plan as to how we might win. IN ONE HOUR. Most importantly, he made us all feel comfortable, and we knew we were dealing with a forthright professional who would serve us to the best of his substantial ability. In preparation for the trial, we corresponded mainly with his associate, yet Emile was always available via phone, text, or email to further ensure that the plan stayed relevant and on track, or even just to answer any further concerns we had. He was consummately knowledgeable about the applicable laws and legal procedures. He always made us feel we had made the right decision in hiring him & his associate to represent us, every time we communicated. To be quite frank, he and his team worked their asses off for us, since we had a pretty limited amount of time until the date of the hearing by the time we found him. They were AMAZING. I was literally amazed at watching them work so flawlessly as a team; with such good humor, so quickly, and with total precision, even in the courtroom: right in front of the judge when they had to change direction on an issue mid-hearing. Finally, and against all odds, we did win our case (joint custody is far, far better than a few hours every other Saturday!), and both my mother and I sincerely believe that Emile & his team are solely responsible for that victory. I've run out of the dozen cards he gave me because I've handed them all out to friends, even strangers. I've given his number to a dozen more. I'd hire him again in a second, and intend to do so should I EVER require more family law/custody issues legal help, and if I need help in some other area of the law, Emile is the only man I'll ask for a referral, because I respect his opinion so much.

Michael Girgenti took my case after the original consult in October 2022. He was assuring & competent at the initial interview, and did not fail to exercise precision and determination in resolving the case. His temperament & concentration to details throughout was focused & well-planned. Presentation to me, as well as the Judge, was concise and accurate. Easy to communicate with, and trustworthy. I have told Michael, i have the luxury of feeling as if i have known him for 20 years...that goes for anyone he may represent (and includes those he has represented). A+ character & recommended to all. -Steve R

I hired Mr. Girgenti after having three other lawyers in my divorce case. My case was a mess. Mr. Girgenti treated me with the utmost respect. He communicated very well and called me very quickly when I needed him. He explained things in easy terms. If I was out of line, he would suggest something that he felt would work better and it always did without fail. Everything he did helped straighten out my case very quickly. My Judge respected him and knew he was a person of integrity. Mr. Girgenti is the best lawyer and I would recommend him over any other lawyer. Best thing I did for my divorce was hire him!

Michael won my case. I was in a tough spot during my divorce having just been diagnosed with a significant disability. Opposing counsel was ruthless and I was so nervous and scared that I was on the verge of signing disadvantageous terms in my family law case. Michael took over from my previous attorney and immediately demonstrated the poise, knowledge, character strength and compassion I needed to confront a situation I felt was impossible. As a result, opposing counsel started playing by the rule of law, and more importantly, the court started to hear my voice. During litigation, Michael was calm, assertive, and professional. He tackled each challenge in my case with mastery that kept opposing counsel from confusing the situation by jumping from topic to topic haphazardly. The result was a win that level set the future for my ex-wife and me. Our kids are emotionally stable, mentally fit, and have a strong relationship with both parents. Afterall, the future state of the children is what matters most.

I got stuck with this scheister lawyer when I filed a motion for a change of counsel and was met with consent verbal condescending, chastising abuse during our calls. He said, the reason you got me was because, you had issues with other attorneys. My other court appointed attorneys screwed me over by not getting my phone where I had evidence to clear my charges and circumvent me to take a plea. When I realize it would ruin my life, she would not undo the plea which I found too late I could have. Another Lawyer, dumped me off on her investigator who told me the system was not fair. That women got away with ruining your life. How they lost a really strong case. If I did not trust them, to get another team. He says, obvious they did and they withdrew and I got appointed." No, I motion the courts three weeks before my previous attorney withdrew and had to remind her to withdraw from my case. Kyle patronizes me saying, I have been doing post-conviction relief for eight years, nine years, something like that.' You are the first client to call me to know about your case two days after I gotten it. "This is not my first rodeo." So, my case is like a circus or a rodeo to him. When I ask questions about my charges he said, “If you have a problem with the classifications an offense, take it up with legislator. Don't take it up with me.” I get ridiculed for calling him first. He had my case for a month and he did nothing. I motion the court again and was denied and stuck with him. My previous team had an investigator who were going to look into other angles for my case. He refused to get one. I had a free consultation from another attorney which I could not afford who told me all my lawyers were giving me in effective council and all Kyle did was read the report and replied he saw nothing wrong. However, he said, if I did not sign a plea, you would have won at trial. Kyle put in no effort in my case and was vindictive not to withdraw and the courts made me stay with him I was not able to represent myself. I am glad I am the second person in a month who has submitted a negative review on Kyle Green and others will come forward.

I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know what information is relevant, what needs to be substantiated with evidence, or how I’m allowed to communicate in a courtroom under these pretenses. That’s why I hired an attorney. I was assaulted by a man who lied to me about his identity. His true identity revealed that he is the author of a book that advocates for the assault of women. Obviously had I known that, I never would have gone out with him. There was an extreme amount of manipulation that followed the assault. The incident culminated with an altercation at my gym that prompted me to file a restraining order, which I was granted. I hired Kyle when the order was challenged. I filed a case against this man with the local police. What I had to say was compelling enough that an undercover detective showed up to the hearing. I got a delayed start to working with Kyle because his team couldn't even be bothered to ensure they put the correct name on the contract. Virtually no information was requested of me prior to the hearing. When asked about text communication I did tell him there wasn't much- my communication with my abuser was months ago and I didn't remember the full extent of our conversation. A prepared attorney would have asked to see the texts anyway- the burden of proof is on the filer and he had literally nothing else to do to prepare. When we got to the courtroom I noticed my witness wasn’t there, so I called him. He explained that Kyle told him he was going to confirm with him and that that didn't happen. Regardless of who’s error it was, I asked if he needed to come and Kyle said no. The hearing started very late and he lives right next to the courthouse and could have made it if I had insisted. I would have insisted had I known that I wouldn't be able to reference anything that happened at the gym that day without his testimony. I don’t understand why Kyle wouldn’t have communicated this to me knowing the impact it would have on my ability to address any part of that very scary event. The fact that my abuser lied to me about his identity is far from irrelevant. Mesa PD are the ones who informed me of this- I had no idea that I would need to provide a witness from Mesa PD about how I arrived at this information. The judge did not allow me to say a single word about this. This is procedural information Kyle would have known as an attorney. I failed to meet my burden of proof- or rather KYLE did. He failed to do his due diligence and look at the texts. He failed to connect with the witness, and failed to advise me appropriately when asked about whether the witness needed to come. He failed to provide evidence regarding the information I was given by the police on the true identity of my abuser, or to advise me appropriately The worst thing happened- the protective order was dropped. Had I been doing this on my own without Kyle’s council I would have taken the due diligence to research what was required of me and I would have shown up more prepared than I did with him by my side. I seriously doubt a detective would have been in that room on my behalf had my account really been that unreliable or outlandish. The outcome of that hearing obliterated any chance I'll ever have of justice for the sodomy I endured. It got much worse though, my abuser requested attorney fees and they were granted. Kyle decided it wasn’t important to communicate with me as his client before he challenged the order. I’m angry that he sent off the objection without so much as asking me about it or having me review the letter. Had he taken a single moment to talk to me, he would have known that I spent most of last year on unemployment, as I was forced to restructure my business. He completely failed to represent my interests, as he took zero time to understand

I am writing to express my highest recommendation of Attorney Matt Schultz. When Matt took over my divorce case, the proceedings had been dragging on for almost a year with bare minimum progress under my prior representation. From our first meeting, he demonstrated his strong advocacy and skill as he got up to speed on the intricate details of my case. He took the time to answer all my questions and talk to me throughout it all. Matt was super helpful in explaining everything clearly, so I understood what was happening. In the few short months, he navigated the legal complexities efficiently and professionally. I was impressed by his dedication, strategic approach and ability to cut through red tape. Thanks to his leadership, I was finally able to resolve my divorce in a timely manner. Dealing with divorce is tough enough emotionally, so it really meant a lot to have someone as on top of it as Matt in my corner. He brought tremendous value as my counsel. I am sincerely grateful for his assistance during this difficult personal matter.

I cannot say enough about the firm Blake & Pulsifer, PFC. Blake & Pulsifer has represented multiple generations for our family and has consistently operated with the highest level of professionalism. ethics, respect and responsiveness. My Grandparents previously worked with Mark Pulsifer who was fantastic advising in all relevant areas. I recently had the opportunity to engage this firm alongside a family member who required legal guidance on multiple matters. Attorney Sarah Randolph, ESQ, and the team with Sylvia Bustamonte and Susie Milward were a blessing. They handled multiple matters quickly and efficiently, resolving current issues, making multiple recommendations to modify and update various legal strategies and docs. I appreciate the hard truths and the suggestions for consideration going forward. My siblings and I are in great care with Blake & Pulsifer and will be the 3rd generation to be represented by this firm. Thanks Sarah, Mark, Susie & Sarah!

When my ex-wife unexpectedly threw a “below the belt punch” when trying to receive custody of our son, I needed a no-nonsense, professional attorney. James stuck to the facts as he laid out all of my options. He refused to indulge in similar tactics as opposing counsel, and kept to his knowledge of the law and professional courtroom etiquette. He knew when to urge me to negotiate, and when it was time to argue in front of the Judge. In the end, I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome for me and my family. Not only did my son remain in the better home, my ex-wife ended paying my Attorney’s fees. It was a long exhausting case, but James kept a positive attitude, which helped boost my morale. James seemed to know when to be extra firm with me in order to help me make the best choices in one of the worse periods of my life. James Cork II, is not only an excellent attorney, but extremely patient and to the point as well. I would recommend him for any type of Family law. Thank you James!

When I finally realize my marriage was over, I was overwhelmed with the idea of finding an attorney. Through my research and word-of-mouth, I hired James. I am very much a first impressions kind of guy, and I can tell you, James won me over quickly. He was very professional, but personable, well handling my difficult case with confidence and integrity. My divorce was quite challenging, with several major issues to resolve, but due to Jameses extensive experience, and broad knowledge of family law, we were able to resolve and ultimately win our positions. James was very thorough with his approach and since this was my first divorce he was very patient, as he walked me through the process, while always keeping my goals in mind. One thing that really impressed me with the James was his ability to never lose his bearing, and to always stay on task. He never lost sight of our position and worked hard to solidify our case throughout the entire process. In addition, his court room etiquette was impressive, and he tackled the fax with the right level of tenacity, and professionalism. At the end of the day, we won our positions and I was very ecstatic with the results. I would and actually have recommended James to others for any family law matter, and thus far his reputation precedes him. Thank you James!

When I first hired Keith for my family law case, it was clear he can be a brilliant attorney if he chooses to be. However in my case he was lazy and disinterested. He had the ability to help me and he chose not to for whatever reason. My overall impression is that he is arrogant and patronizing and it’s hit or miss whether he will take an interest in your case or not. Unfortunately for me I wasted thousands before I realized he simply didn’t care.

My children and I are now free and able to live our lives in the best, healthiest way possible.

talked to Jason about a case and paid him for the consultation time and a response for my case. He gave me a flat rate for the case if i were to hire him for the court. Months later, after the court set up a trial date and i had some stuff from the plaintiff mailed to his office, i went back to see him, he question why i had some stuff from the plaintiff mailed to him so i told him i was going to have him represent me, but he just said there was a great chance of winning for my chance and i can handle it by myself. So at that time he had no interest of taking my case after the consultation because he believed I can win. He has really bad workmanship, if you going to give someone a flat rate for the case, you should get it done right from start to finish. And during all the time i tried to call him, either no one answered the phone or you leave a message with the front desk person about the issue, but you never receive a call back within 48 hours, it was more than a week. He finally called back because I had to call the office every day asking for me. Their office is really bad at returning calls. And one more thing, 8 out of 10 times that i called the office, no one picked up the phone and went to voicemail, but when i blocked my number before i called, someone picked it up. So you can figure it out what's going on. definitely don't hire this lawyer if you expect someone to stay on top of your issue and return your call within 24 hours.

I would say that my experience was very good with Wells Law and Realty. Your office was able to change what could have been and likely would have been a highly stressful situation to one where I could push it to the back of my mind having confidence it was being taken care of. I felt like all of the staff were respectful, honest, and diligent. I appreciate being given regular e-mail updates on what was happening with the property. Although there were many setbacks in the sale of my property, I was given honest and timely updates. I attribute the successful sale to the diligence your office made in getting appropriate offers and in your persistence in negotiating with the lenders. Thank you for a great experience. I would highly recommend Wells Law and Realty to others.

I have hired Lisa a couple times when I was doing crazy things in my life. My bf also hired her when he got into some trouble. I was facing 13.5 years if I went with a Public Defender. Lisa was able to negotiate with the state prosecutor (who is known for being really tough ) and got me 2.5 years!!!! While I was out fighting my case and I would walk with her through the superior courthouse you can see how very respected she is by everyone who works there. While I was in county waiting to be sentenced she would come on the weekends to visit with me. When she was representing my bf she was able to get his warrant quashed and all charges dropped. She is very knowledgeable and will fight hard for her clients. She basically saved my life!! Thank you Lisa!

I spent 10.5 long hard mind in county jail, as soon as Lisa got my case she was thorough I was released 90 days after she got my case. My previous lawyer did nothing on my behalf, he was ignorant to my case but Lisa was willing to fight for me! And still is she was even upset about probation plea (we both felt was unnecessary due to lack of evidence). I should not have signed it but after almost a year I was unable to find strength to fight anymore I needed to get back to my life and Lisa understood this. She got me out of there and I am now on my way to completing probation successfully, I thank God for Lisa, I pray He send her many people innocently rotting in jail that need her as I did thank you Lisa for everything!

Joy is excellent, best attorney I ever have. I went to three different immigration attorneys before my friend referred Joy to me. She helped me a lot and fixed my previous immigration problems. I know my case is very complex and difficult. Joy told me upfront that she could not guarantee anything especially my prior immigration problems but I requested her to try anyway. Joy's fee is very reasonable and affordable. I obtain my green card without a problem. She really saved my "life" so that I can stay in US.

I dont usually do reviews, but i want to say Thank you Thank you, again to Kristina Sitton. She was an amazing Lawyer. On our initial meeting she looked over my case letting me know what we were up against and what we could do to fight it. She really listened to my concerns and made me feel at ease so i could focus on other things. She was always available for questions and She always seem to be a step ahead of the courts. Kristina really knows her law and shows it. She consistently kept me updated on new findings and took care of everything pertaining to my case leaving me virtually stress free. My outcome was better than I could hope or expect for thanks to the amazing Kristina. I truly was impressed by the whole experience and would recommend her to all my friends and family.

I was represented by Kristina in both a federal case and a state case. Throughout the entire process she was very hard to reach by phone or email. Not to mention when I did have court appearances she would often send someone else to deal with me. I have dealt with many different attorneys and have never encountered this. I paid to be represented by her, I did not appreciate her sending associates, often her as well as her associates would show up past the expected time agreed upon. The biggest issue for me was her not following through with the duties I hired her to handle, along with being EXTREMELY FLAKY as far as handling communication with me as a client.

Single abused mommas?? this is the girl you are looking for. Let me just tell you... When I was served divorce papers I was a stay home mom of a 8 month old ... that hired the first firm I could find between the naps of my son. I hired Rowley and Chapman and 18 k in legal fees later and they weren’t even able to get me even child support. They obviously didn’t have my best interest but the interest of getting the last of my savings. My ex had a scumbag of attorney who advised him to do evil things to me to get rid of me and out of the picture of him and my son. (Supposedly one of the best Lds family law attorneys in the East valley, but seriously I was dealing with a couple of Cowards, perverted, evil men who managed to get me out of marital home with lies and a false order of protection just because I requested in temporary orders to stay in Marital home to take care of my newborn and my ex to go with his mother who lived 15 minutes from marital home. It was in the beginning of the Covid lockdown. I found Ashley through prayers and guided by Angels I think and Azlawhelp.org. In her profile it said she had experience with abuse. My ex was financially, emotionally and mentally abusive but I couldn’t really figure out what he was trying to accomplish until it became very clear. I was an international bride/wife with no idea of family court in the US. What a nightmare!!! I was lucky to find Ashley and I think she was a good fit because she went straight to the point, made me understand how family court works in AZ, didn’t take advantage of me, and I feel she educated me during the process. I was certainly clueless. All I can say, is that she didn’t allow those cowards to walk all over me, and leave me completely destitute and without my son like they were trying. Ashley is young, tech savvy, straightforward, honest, I don’t know who trained her, but she is very educated and with lots of experience for her young age and I think the best quality is that she doesn’t take advantage of her clients by educating them. I predict she will become one of the best female family court attorneys in AZ, maybe even a judge hopefully a Judge. I pray more attorneys follow her steps, because unfortunately lawyers are not regulated by tax dollars like realtors, teachers, etc. so make sure you go to a good person. Because most attorneys have lots of power and poor regulations and many can rip you off. God bless you Ashley.

I was attempting to find relief to a legal issue I was having, so I hired this attorney for legal advice. Mrs. Gilles conducted herself in a very negative and arrogant manner toward me and did so in-front of other staff. She failed to give me the proper and professional legal advice that I was seeking, and instead she conducted herself in a rude, judgmental and demeaning way toward me. Mrs. Gilles inserted her negative opinions and treated me with disrespect. She did not let me speak during our encounter and performed juvenile antics such as rolling her eyes and talking over me. For all the above reasons, I would not recommend this attorney to anyone looking for legal advice or representation.

I retained Vince because he was inexpensive and seemed very capable. He proved me correct in both cases. Vince was quite knowledgeable about family law, was good at explaining options in simple terms, and thankfully was not a pushover when dealing with the opposing party's attorney. His weakness has to do with his ability to pass along case details to me - at the time he was a solo practitioner with limited staff, so getting updates on the progress of my case was at times difficult and he didn't use email. I must say he was on time with all matters dealing with the court and didn't miss a deadline. I would recommend him, but only if he gets a paralegal to support him and provide important updates on cases. I used his services soon after he started his solo practice, and if he fixes this issue, he is a strong recommendation

I trusted this attorney because he TOLD me he knew what he was doing. He told me that I was right, and that my case had merit. I asked multiple times for an explanation of WHY he thought this would go to superior court in my favor and I never received an answer. The judge ruled, I lost. Still, no return call from Patrick. I thhink he presented himself as too experienced, and therefore I trusted him for my case. He should have told me he knew very little about how the superior court worked. I did almost all of the paperwork myself. My papers were to be delivered to my daughter. He mailed them certified, she never got them---she isn;t stupd, she wasn't going to the post office and sign for the legal papers she knew were coming. I PAID a process server. The only communication I have received lately was a few days ago---"the billing cycle is ending, are you going to pay?" no comment about my request. I sent my check out that day to the adress listed online for the office. It came back to my home saying "NO business at this address. I cannot figure him out. I am not a confrontational woman, I wish he would have told me at the start that he was inexperienced and I should look elsewhere, I now need that money to do what my next step is--AT THE SELF HELP DESK WHERE I KNOW THINGS WILL GET DONE. So very unfair. I trusted him.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
