I brought the case of my son to Emmanuel West, only for him to delay the case till the last month of status of limitation. He assured me that associates of Doctors has verified and claimed that we have a case, only for Emmanuel to backtrack that a specialist has to view the case, when it was about one month left for the status of limitation to end, after sweet talk all this past months . He waited for almost two years, keep deceiving me that my case is been given necessary attention. It was all a lie. When you call him, he would not pick up phone , nor respond to test messages. I would never recommend Emanuel west to anybody. Sweet talk, no action. Very manipulative. Knows how to delay your case where you cannot give it to another lawyer. Like my case has a two years window. He deliberately delayed and deceive me till the last months of filing, at the end I lost everything

I did not find the office responsive, knowledgeable or trustworthy. I was a customer February 2011 and found their legal fees higher than the national average for a RE Mortgage closing, and their performance was poor.

I was recommended to Ms Burnett through a free service at Lawmart. She is absolutely the worst case senario. Ms Burnett never met with me to go over my case but suggested to converse by email? I should have known then that she was not going to be effective. Then she showed up one hour and fourty minutes late to the hearing which started without her! I called her and she never responded, I called the Kaine Law Firm who referred her where they also tried reaching her, it was already 1 hour and running the hearing started at 9:00, Once she arrived at 10:40 the judge ripped her apart for being late and she lied saying that she thought the hearing was at 10:00, but she was aware of the time and place, I spoke to her prior to the court date and she assured me that she would be there on time, not only did she not sequester the witnesses, she allowed them to stay in the courtroom and hear each others testimony which eventually hurt me. She was not prepared at all, arriving as late as she did not only meant that she did not have a chance to meet me or meet with me to discuss anything let alone a strategy, or get information from me that would have helped her during her questioning of my accusers. She was so disorganized and preoccupied with trying to find information from her papers that she allowed hear say to get on record, the judge actually stopped the witness and suggested it was hear say before Ms. Burnett realized that the testimony was being given and she should have been objecting to it! When she arrived the Judge had already started to question one of my witnesses and gotten clarity about what the accusers had suggested. I understand that I could have had the same outcome but I paid her to represent me and she did a very poor job of that. I contacted her for her to assist in getting a charge that was dismissed from the court system and she has refused contact, I believe that because it is a part of this case that she has a responsibility to follow up and assure that it has been removed from the system.

She is very unprofessional and is not a confidential lawyer. I was recommended to her by her husband. I spoke to her about my situation and later after speaking to her, her husband was able to discussed the circumstances of my case with someone and I heard about it. She is also very disrespectful. When she want to get her point across she gets very loud and disrespectful.

This attorney takes people's cases and money and let's them sit for years and doesn't do the work. He doesn't research .you can't contact him. He is a crook and a thief and not actually working on cases. He has several cases on his desk right now that he has had for years. That family's paid him for and are looking for relief but he does nothing. Every client needs to report him to the bar immediately. DO NOT HIRE THIS LAWYER

Atty. William Sheppard settled Mrs. June M Sutton's Discrimination Law Suit with the Atlanta Gas Light Company in 1984. Took it all - Never gave me any reward moneys nor the settlement document he forged behind my back. I regret using Atty. William Sheppard as my attorney and never would I recommend him to anyone because he represented me in a Discrimination Law Suit where I worked at the Atlanta Gas Light Company from Dec. 8, 1975 until July 14, 198 and was fired because of Racial Discrimination, and I was referred to him by Ms. R. Swanson in 1981. I know it has been a long time. This attorney settled my case behind my back and took every dime of my money never gave me one cent and he never told me what the agreement was and I never signed anything agreeing to what Atlanta Gas Light Company had agreed to give me. I was informed by a formal employee by the name of Ms. Betty that my case had been settled, record had been cleared, and I could reapply if I wanted to. I reached out to this attorney William Sheppard he has ignored me. Yes it has been since 1984that the case was settled. There was deposition that was taken by along with my sitting there giving my statement with Atlanta Gas Light lawyer, William Sheppard and the person who was doing the deposition. I reached out to William Sheppard since he has moved to his Tucker Office not once did he respond. Yes he robbed me of what was rightfully mine. Yes I did get a right to sue letter from EOE and I trusted him but he did not do me right. According to Joel 2:25 I stand on God's words He has to give it back. This comment is true in the name of Jesus. No I would never refer him to anyone else. I paid him $500.00 to take my case. Rev. June ST

When I was first introduced to Mark Segal I thought he would be able to handle my case in a reasonable amount of time. It turned out that Mark Segal did more to hurt my case than help it. To start off, we had a decent settlement that the insurance company had offer. Mark decided to turn down the offer for a better one. During the end of his service, the insurance company decided to offer less than a quarter of the original offer. Second, Mark failed to keep me informed of my case on a regular basis. Third, Mark is not trustworthy. There was many times when Mark had the chance to tell me the truth about my case and failed to do so. Fourth, Mark was finally dismiss from my case when my investigation turned up that Mark was working with the same insurance company that I had a case against. Last but not least, I try to obtain a copy of my file from Mark; it took 7 months and the act of the Georgia State Bar to step in. I would not recommend this lawyer to anyone.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
