I do not have much experience with law firms, but I can honestly say that this firm is the absolute worst when it comes to communication. I should have followed my first mind and dropped them months ago instead of letting them talk me into staying with them. If I could give negative stars I would give them 1,000 of them. A client should never have to basically beg for a returned phone call, email or text. It literally takes a few seconds to send a text. Lawyer gave me her personal cell phone number allegedly and I still do not get a response. I have gone weeks, probably even a month or so WITH NO CONTACT from my so called lawyer or team. I went to court in April of this year and I still have no idea what is happening or any updates. I had to make the choice to return to work while still injured and in pain because I could no longer wait for this circus to represent me. Do yourself a favor and find someone else. I was off from work for 10 months with no pay based off of a partial denial from workman's comp and these lawyers move slower than molasses in Alaska. They did nothing to force the issue of the partial denial to have workman's comp keep paying me and providing therapy while things went through the "process" Now I am stuck with the choice of firing them like I should have and start over, or keep waiting it out...DO NOT HIRE THIS FIRM!!!!!!!!!

Parente & Norem was suggested to me by an old friend of mine when I was in an accident. They did nothing but hold my hand and help guide me through this trauma, as I have never needed legal council in this matter before. Not only am I pleased with Dennis Lynch and his team, but the law office overall was great! My payout is great and they worked so hard to fight my case. I highly recommend Parente & Norem

I attempted to obtain this law office to handle an eviction case on June 6th - the original individual who was assisting me couldn’t not follow up due to family emergencies - the secretary and the billing specialist are rude; they like to scream on the phone, hang up during calls, gives you no room to talk and then they ignore the calls going into the office - I requested the call is escalated to a manager and the billing specialist then identifies herself as a manager. The excuse they kept giving is that the original person that was working my case was out of office and then proceeded to tell her personal business of why - when I asked them for their last names they said “we don’t give out our last names”. It’s June 20th and nothing has been filed - according to the secretary they do not follow up and do not call their clients to provide updates.

I would definitely recommend this lawyer. In fact, I’ve recommended her to a couple of my friends and they all have thanked me for it … She does outstanding work and will not beat around the bush with you!!! She know her laws and if you get caught red-handed, She’s going to make sure that The Police didn’t have any mistakes on your paperwork. Or whoever or however, your case goes, she’s really going to be on your side. If she don’t think you will beat the case, she will tell you. And after that, the only thing she can do is make sure they don’t slay you !! Very good lawyer ,, I keep her in my back pocket meaning I call her whenever I need help with anything. Very straightforward . Very intelligent Outstanding member

I have retained Ms. Jolly since 2016 for a family case. She is beyond reasonable, always is thorough in explaining or answering any questions I have ever had, and puts forth 100%. She listened and always let me know what the reality would or could be in the situation and didnt sugar coat anything. My case is coming to a close and I couldn't have had better representation over the last few years!

Mike recommended Tony as he was the expert in estate/probate law. My father in law passed away in September of 2022, leaving behind his home. Tony was so helpful and saved us so much time and money with his knowledge and expertise. He knew the affidavit that would save us so much heartache and he knew just the person to help us. Everyone at this firm is so kind and knowledgeable. From Mike and Tony to Ashleigh and everyone in between. I highly recommend Flynn Guymon and Garavalia!

Kyle took my case over when at Anderson and Associates in 2020. It was an absolute mess. He didn’t let that stop him and worked through what I thought was a battle I would lose completely. He made me feel like I could win a fair divorce and made sure I would be apart of my children’s lives. When he transitioned to another law firm I did not hesitate to transition with him. While their were many challenges Kyle explained everything to me and walked me through choices and options especially when it came to parenting time and what going through a long trail would not only look like but the expense and the overall trauma it could leave on my children. I had 3 major issues with child support through the change of jobs and issues with HFS. Kyle worked diligently to help me rectify these issues quickly fairly. I have recommended Kyle to others and will continue to do so. I have spent the last 4 years with Kyle and will always go back to him when it comes to any of my family divorce issues or family matters. On a personal note Kyle is the lawyer I should have started with. I feel that my divorce might not have taken and cost as much as it did if he was my lawyer from the start. He is very knowledgeable and was sympathetic when the time was needed. For me this process was a roller coaster and Kyle kept me settled and focused on what was most important to me and that was my children.

During my search for a family law attorney, I reached out to a local Mom’s group on Facebook. After a few repeated recommendations, I decided to contact Amanda Highlander, an attorney with the Shaw Law Group of Edwardsville, Illinois. From the first time I met Amanda, I was immediately impressed. I’ve used various attorneys over the years, but Amanda was the first to make me feel like my time and money wasn’t being wasted. Amanda is professional and tough, yet caring and open to listening. She is straight forward and extremely efficient. I was so happy to find someone who understands what it’s like to be a parent and that would work to uncover my best options. Amanda explained the reasons behind each step of our process, and I couldn’t have been happier with the outcome. I got exactly what I paid for and more with Amanda!

Ellen represented me in my recent order of protection case. Her professionalism and expertise were invaluable assets throughout this challenging process. Prior to each hearing, I experienced significant anxiety. Ellen was able to skillfully navigate these concerns and help ease my anxieties. Her calm demeanor and clear communication instilled confidence, and her ability to explain complex legal matters in a straightforward manner was truly appreciated. While Ellen always maintained the utmost professionalism, she also possessed a genuine empathy for my situation. This combination of legal expertise and personal understanding made me feel truly supported throughout the process. Ultimately, Ellen secured a favorable outcome in my case, granting me the order of protection and restoring a sense of safety and security for both me and my child. I am incredibly grateful for her dedication and unwavering commitment to achieving the best possible result. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Ellen to anyone seeking legal representation in a similar situation. Ellen was professional and precise when working against my ex wife's shady attorney. We remained calm and collected against multiple threats from the other attorney and ended coming out way ahead in my opinion. I felt as though I was already at a disadvantage being male in DuPage and seeking as much time as possible with my daughter. My ex wanted to fight over every little thing possible. After 6.5 years and several lawyers later, by the grace of God, I found Katie. Katie turned the entire case around and it was resolved in 18 months. Katie diligently reviewed the case file and had my ex figured out. She always responded to my calls and emails in a very timely manner. She was well prepared for all of our hearings. My case was a mess filled with drama and I don't know what I would have done without Katie. Thank you for everything! As of today, I have a 50/50 spilt with my daughters mom. I would highly recommend her for any and all aspects of a divorce or parentage case.

This woman committed legal malpractice against me. She had me sign the wrong version of my MSA and then charged me $600 to do my QILDRO and when my ex retired 7 years after the divorce was final we discovered SHE NEVER did the QILDRO so if he had died I would have received NOTHING. Finally when my new lawyers reached out to her countless times she ignored them every time. This woman cost me over $50,000 in missed money. DO NOT USE HER and if you do make sure you go over all your paperwork with a fine toothed comb.

I utilized Tricia's services for recalculating child support with my ex-wife. Tricia is very professional, strong knowledge of case law, and provided cost effective ways for my ex-wife and I to get the details pre-agreed upon without my wife's lawyer or Tricia. This was nice to see since it showed she was ethical and professional, and NOT trying to churn fees. Most importantly Tricia showed empathy for me, my children and even my ex. Many divorced situations turn ugly. Tricia's empathy and care she showed for all parties speaks volumes about her ethics and morals. I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking legal counsel in this unfortunately area of the law.

$3,500 dollars down the drain from a lack of communication, false promises, and excuses of why it took 4.5 months to write a motion/petition to modify parental allocation which oddly referred to me as the mother (she/her) in the language. I switched counsel because of no movement and had $200 left from my retainer which was never reimbursed even after calling the firm’s office asking for payment. Moreover, she was unprepared for court and got talked over by the other party’s lawyer. I got the results I was looking for elsewhere.

Stephanie Hall and her assistant @ Meyer Capel represented me in my divorce. It was an absolutely awful experience. 1. Very disorganized - I was constantly having to resubmit documents. 2. I repeatedly asked that motions of relief be submitted to the judge. I was told they would be....they never were. 3. Communication was terrible - I would have to send emails multiple times over a week or two before they were finally returned. 4. In a meeting with opposing counsel, Stephanie Hall was not prepared at all and had no questions prepared. I felt totally unsupported. 5. When the judge met with her and opposing counsel to go over the status of the case. The judge recommended a 55% - 45% split of assets and debts. This was what I expected. However, when opposing counsel submitted a settlement proposal which was much less favorable. Stephanie Hall advised I take that. When I asked why, she had no good reasoning for it, other than to just get the divorce finalized. ..........when I disagreed with her because of what the judge said, Stephanie threatened to stop representing me.....I told her I could not afford to change attorneys at that point and it was ridiculous for her to threaten that , just because I did not agree with her on the proposed settlement. Again, I wish I would have sought out other counsel. However, I simply did not know if I could afford to start over with another attorney.

Phenomenal. Articulate. Intelligent. Adaptable. Jamie Wombacher and her associates are no less than brilliant, she is everything you want in a lawyer. I first called Jamie terrified and confused as I was being accused and arrested for something I did not do. For the past 14 months I was consistently blown away by not only Jamie’s level of professionalism and poise with every interaction she had inside and outside the court, but by her ability to be completely transparent yet calculated with every move and decision she made. Even the supporters who came to my trial, having never worked with her, commented to me how great she was in the courtroom. I have Jamie to thank for ensuring I can continue to live my life.

Jamie was the best decision I ever made. She truly cares about getting the results you want. It’s almost as though my case was as personal for her as it was for me. I was in complete shock by her abilities during my hearing, she’s quick and pays attention to every detail all while making it look effortless. I’m pretty familiar with the court system….when I met my ex husband he was going through a custody battle. I watched 7 years of court proceedings between him and his sons mother. They both went through multiple attorneys and GALs. When I hired Jamie I assumed it would look much the same but I was so wrong, she out performed any attorney I had ever seen. I will be forever grateful for finding her.

Aaron has been my ex wife's attorney now for years of court. Basically he's a great attorney at divorce but if you want a mess of a divorce, he'll bring it. His legal guidance is less than standard and often includes hiding and not attending to business if its not in his clients favor, but life isn't a "client" its peoples lives he has no regard for. If you let him, he will drag things out. Clients of any divorce need to realize that no one "wins", its a divorce! The entire family pays the price. He's basically not a fraud, but extremely close to that line in the sand. If you have a brain and basic a divorce and you need someone close to the courthouse, he would be fine. If you have a business...stay away! His lack of business understanding or lack of interest will tank all parties in his quest for everything..in closing, he's smart but not that smart. He knows basic law, aside from that he's very weak.

What an Adoption Lawyer Can Do for You

An adoption lawyer specializes in navigating the legal complexities of the adoption process, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved - the adoptive parents, birth parents, and the child - are protected. They assist families through the different types of adoption, such as domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, and private adoptions. Adoption lawyers ensure that the adoption process complies with state, federal, and international laws, and handle any legal issues that may arise during the process, such as terminating parental rights, conducting home studies, and finalizing the adoption.

If you're looking to adopt or if you're a birth parent considering placing your child for adoption, an adoption lawyer can guide you through the legal requirements and ensure the process goes smoothly.

When Should I Hire an Adoption Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an adoption lawyer in the following situations:

  • Private or independent adoption: If you’re adopting a child directly from the birth parents without the involvement of an adoption agency, a lawyer is essential to draft and review all legal documents, including consent forms and parental rights termination agreements.
  • Foster care adoption: If you’re adopting a child from foster care, a lawyer can help navigate the legal process, ensure the child’s eligibility for adoption, and represent you in court to finalize the adoption.
  • Stepparent or relative adoption: If you’re adopting a stepchild or a relative, a lawyer can assist in terminating the parental rights of the biological parent and ensure the adoption is completed legally and efficiently.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are complex, involving multiple layers of laws from the U.S. and the child’s birth country. A lawyer can help navigate immigration requirements and ensure compliance with international treaties like the Hague Convention.
  • Contested adoptions: If a birth parent changes their mind about the adoption or there is a dispute over parental rights, a lawyer can represent you in court and ensure that the adoption proceeds legally.
  • Adoption for same-sex couples: If you're a same-sex couple looking to adopt, a lawyer can help ensure that your adoption complies with state laws and that both parents have equal legal rights to the child.
  • Birth parent representation: If you’re a birth parent considering adoption, a lawyer can ensure that your rights are protected, help you understand the legal implications of terminating parental rights, and ensure that your decision is legally sound.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help avoid legal complications and ensure that the adoption is legally finalized as smoothly as possible.

What Does an Adoption Lawyer Do?

An adoption lawyer provides a variety of legal services, ensuring that the adoption process is completed in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing legal paperwork: Adoption lawyers handle all the necessary paperwork, including petitions to terminate parental rights, consent forms, and final adoption decrees. They ensure that the adoption is in line with state, federal, and international laws.
  • Conducting home studies: Some adoptions require a home study to evaluate the prospective adoptive family. While a social worker usually conducts the study, a lawyer can ensure that the process complies with legal requirements and that the report is submitted correctly.
  • Terminating parental rights: Lawyers assist in terminating the legal rights of the biological parents, either voluntarily through signed consent or involuntarily through court proceedings if necessary.
  • Representing clients in court: Adoption lawyers represent adoptive parents, birth parents, or other parties in court hearings to finalize the adoption or resolve disputes.
  • Navigating international adoption laws: For international adoptions, a lawyer helps ensure that all legal requirements, both in the U.S. and the child’s home country, are met, including securing the child’s visa and citizenship.
  • Providing legal advice: Adoption lawyers guide clients through each step of the adoption process, advising them on their rights and obligations, as well as any potential legal issues that may arise.
  • Drafting post-adoption agreements: In some cases, especially open adoptions, a lawyer can help draft post-adoption agreements that specify the level of contact between the adoptive and birth parents.

How Are Adoption Lawyers Paid?

Adoption lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the adoption and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many adoption lawyers charge a flat fee for handling the entire adoption process. This is common for straightforward adoptions, such as stepparent or foster care adoptions, where the legal work is relatively predictable.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex adoptions, such as contested or international adoptions, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: In cases where the adoption process may take longer or involve more legal work (e.g., termination of parental rights or court disputes), a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront, so you understand the total cost of the adoption and any additional expenses that may arise during the process.

How Much Does an Adoption Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an adoption lawyer depends on the type of adoption and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Stepparent or relative adoption: Legal fees for these types of adoptions typically range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on whether the adoption is contested or requires a court hearing.
  • Domestic private adoption: The legal fees for a private adoption usually range from $5,000 to $10,000, including drafting documents, terminating parental rights, and finalizing the adoption in court.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are generally more expensive, with legal fees ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the adoption and the child’s country of origin.
  • Contested adoption: If the adoption is contested and involves court disputes, legal fees may range from $10,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the length and complexity of the court proceedings.

In addition to lawyer fees, adoptive parents should also be aware of additional costs such as court filing fees, home study fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

Top Questions to Ask an Adoption Lawyer

Before hiring an adoption lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and knowledge to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with adoptions?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with the specific type of adoption you’re pursuing, whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, or stepparent adoption.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or hourly rate and ask for a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in your adoption.
  3. What are the legal requirements for my adoption?
Ask the lawyer to explain the legal steps involved in your adoption and any specific requirements that may apply to your case, such as home studies or parental consent.
  4. How long will the adoption process take?
Adoption timelines can vary depending on the type of adoption, so ask the lawyer for an estimate of how long the process will take, including any potential delays.
  5. What are the common challenges in adoption cases?
Ask about any potential legal challenges that could arise during the adoption process and how the lawyer plans to address them.
  6. Will I need to go to court?
Depending on the adoption, you may need to attend court hearings. Ask the lawyer whether your presence will be required and what to expect during these hearings.
  7. Can you help with post-adoption issues?
Ask the lawyer if they can assist with any post-adoption issues, such as obtaining the child’s birth certificate, finalizing the child’s U.S. citizenship (for international adoptions), or drafting post-adoption contact agreements.

How to Check the Credibility of an Adoption Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable adoption lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions on their record.
  • Look for adoption experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in adoption law and have experience handling cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on adoption cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for lawyers who are members of adoption-focused organizations like the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA), which can indicate their expertise in this field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with an adoption lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Information about the child and birth parents: Provide any available information about the child you’re adopting (e.g., age, country of origin, current living situation) and the birth parents, if applicable.
  • Adoption preferences: Be clear about the type of adoption you’re pursuing - whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, or private - and discuss any preferences you have regarding the child’s age, background, or special needs.
  • Legal documents (if applicable): If you’ve already begun the adoption process or have signed any agreements, bring copies of all relevant legal documents, such as consent forms or agency agreements.
  • Questions about the adoption process: Prepare a list of questions about the legal steps involved in your adoption, potential timelines, and any concerns you may have about the process.
  • Financial considerations: Be ready to discuss your budget for legal fees and any additional costs, such as home studies, court fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for your adoption journey.
