NOW maybe I didn't pay enough and thats why I got poor service, I did pay asking price for a retention and I called and MULTIPLE messages regarding advice I was trying to go through but never called me back. So for 500 and 4 months of ignoring me she sent a paper to dismiss the divorce. Doesn't sound like 500 worth of work .....like seriously

Had a very challenging divorce where seems like all the stops were pulled out against me. She calmly and methodically answered them all. I was inappropriately paying a large amount of support and she presented evidence and stopped it all. Had great repour with custody conciliator. I went from little time to full physical and legal custody. Great negotiation of the final settlement. Couldn't ask for a better advocate.

Attorney Strunk handled my Custody and Divorce matters AMAZINGLY. I have hired attorneys before and never had them respond to me as quickly or with as much concern. At first I was a little apprehensive because she seemed really nice but at all my conciliations she was stern, intelligent and knew just what to ask and say. She also explained all of those legal things that I just didn’t understand. I felt that her cost was also fair. She is the best attorney in town, I would hire her again if the need were to ever arise. I've told all my friends about her too.

This is a heartless human being, she destroys family relationships, she has a agenda beforehand and manipulates the outcome, she talks to kids before they see the judge and persuades them what to say regardless of the relationship she's about to destroy. This is a despicable heartless human being.

I appreciate this attorneys answer and the fast response to the first question. She kept the answer short and to the point and was knowledgeable about the subject. However I had to leave off one star because my second question wasn't answered. This of course is not meant in any negative way. I am sure she is very busy. I would definitely recommend her because she knows the law.

I took your advice I contacted a lawyer, and everything in the judges order is specific. The lawyer advised to wait another week to have a trail of the defendant not following the order. Then she advised me to file papers that the mother of our child is in contempt of the judges orders. I am to keep detailed records, keep cool, and list every violation she is doing and present it to the judge. The lawyer listened to my Concerns and after her reading the order my baby's mother is the one who will need a layer to help her get out of the trouble that she has wedged herself into. Thank you April

I recently found myself in a tough spot, facing an eminent domain situation with the Turnpike planning to relocate a main road through my property. Feeling like I had no options, I reached out to Meyer Unkovic and Scott for legal advice. Frank called me back promptly, offering not only expert advice but also a sense of reassurance. When I first received the news early in the morning, I was anxious and hadn’t yet told my wife. Frank’s guidance helped me understand my situation better and prepare for that conversation with my wife. He advised me to explore all my options first, including assessing whether the Turnpike’s offer is fair and getting my property appraised to gain a better understanding of its value. I appreciated this approach because he didn’t push to sign me up right away or pushing for payment for the advice. He acknowledged that at this stage, he might not be able to assist fully and recommended I first determine if their offer is reasonable. He genuinely hoped I wouldn’t need to contact him again (in a good way) as it would mean the issue was resolved. However, he reassured me that if things didn’t work out, I could always reach out for his help.

I hired Frank Kosir.jr unfortunately for a dispute with CSX railroad unfortunately. All this man did is take my money with no action. I paid for a complete deed search and after he completed it, I was told I have no rights to cross the railroad tracks. I took maters into my own hands and did a deed search on my own and found all my rights that he said I did not have. I do not understand how I was able to find all my rights with no experience in this field after paying this firm. He wasted over 7 months of my time with no action. I was charged thousands of dollars with no action. I feel this man is corrupt, be careful

Mr Hills is a straight shooter. He doesn't sugar cost your case and make you think you can do something you can't. I have worked with him on several cases both professionally for my business and for my kids. He has gone out of his way to help my family. He even came to my house when he didn't have to. He has responded to calls and emails late at night when it wasnt necessary. I have told several people that needed a good lawyer that I wouldn't trust anyone else. He's s a good guy that will fight for you.

I cannot believe anyone would have something good to say about this most incompetent, lying, narcissistic lawyer. She is a master at wasting people's time and answering questions without really answering the questions. All she cares about is money and once she gets it and you have run yourself ragged doing the legwork she should have done, you will see that she has done nothing at all! She has no compassion and the topper is she has convinced herself she knows what she is doing. I would have been better off representing myself! DO NOT HIRE THIS INCOMPETENT LIAR!!!! Denise Ward - 3 and a half year client with not one single thing to show for it except a depleted bank account of $15,000 plus all the cost of everything she was supposed to do!!! ($2000) Not to mention the cost of missed days of work doing her job!!!

This is a lawyer who I would refer to anyone I care for. She was a bull-dog when it came to the fight in court. She will tell you as a client the realistic possiblities of the outcomes that I was facing whether I liked them or not. She actually called months after my hearing in custody just to see how we were doing!! Who does that? Not only is she a competant lawyer she is a very great human being. If you are in need of a Lawyer who treats you like your a human being as well as spends the time to make sure you are represented and treated fairly in this crazy court system, Diane Mellott, Esq is your Man!

John T Stieh has been my attorney for more than 40 years. He has handled various situations for me including the documents for the purchase of a home, a nasty divorce, a pre-marital agreement, wills, power of attorney, medical directive, and assisting with the settlement of my mother's estate. John has been a valued advisor and information source. He recently assisted me with many questions regarding my grandchild's 529 college fund, as well as the legal ramifications regarding my ailing husband's professional care. John has guided me through life, and I am most grateful for his professionalism, knowledge, and expertise. I can not recommend him highly enough.

Called Mr. Stieh to help me transfer a deed from my father's name to my name, a pretty simple procedure from what a lot of people tell me. He was fine at first, nice enough on the phone when he took down all my info, but he would never return my calls and never called me when he said he would. He would tell me he would call on Monday, I would get a call on Thursday. The time lapse became progressively longer, and eventually he stopped calling altogether. In my opinion this is very unprofessional and rude, and is just bad business. I ended up finding somebody else to get the job done, and my experience has been so much better.

Maybe she use to be ok but not anymore. Messed everything up to not returning phone calls promptly and not ignoring emails. Always claiming to maybe have used the wrong email address. Kept referring to my ex as my husband when we were never even married. Ended up leaving me stranded in the middle of the court house after I lost money at work and for gas and parking. Claimed she was scared of the other lawyer she had to go up against. Walked out acting scared and quit my case and left my ex to laugh at me that I could not find a competent lawyer.

Having Denise Bierly support us legally was the best decision we made! She wasn't our first attorney we sought and we struck gold when we found her. She was our educator on the gestational process, our saving grace in answering all of our many questions throughout, our match maker for finding the a perfect carrier for our needs, and most of all a newly gained caring friend. We could not be more pleased to have her there the day our twins arrived. It was so reassuring knowing that she was truly there in support, love and kindness to help us celebrate; for thanks to Denise we now have our family!

This attorney was fired during my divorce. He was useless and pushed paperwork all the time and charged me for every phone call and email and nothing was accomplished. Nobody should use this attorney for family law purposes! Horrible service and non-dedicated. He would get irritated with me and get angry if I asked questions about things I did not understand. He may have graduated at the top of his class from law school but he gets an F in personality and ethics.

RJ came highly recommended to me. Little did I know when I first filed for divorce how emotionally immature my ex husband would become and how long he would purposefully drag out the divorce (2.5 years)! RJ's experience allowed him to advise me correctly from the very first day. While my ex was dragging his feet, RJ constantly went out of his way to help me by managing my ex so I could live my life! His expertise provided me with a settlement that I was EXTREMELY happy with. I recommend him to all of my friends who need legal help and am planning to use him to prepare my will and a pre numptual agreement. He is incredibly meticulous, observant, is extremely communicative, and quite pleasant to work with! I was also extremely happy with the positive relationships RJ has with other attorneys and staff at the courthouse.

Peasley charged me over $30,000. Forced me to sign a divorce settlement agreement, behind closed doors. The agreement was dated incorrectly and notarized without the notary having witnessed my signature. The MSA was never filed. Peasley entered me into a child custody agreement (never filed) without my consent and charged me billable hours. Child support was based on joint custody, but my child resided only with me his entire life. Peasley did not specify any amount of my settlement which constituted child support. She told me she was retiring and may not be able to finish my case and then withdrew as my attorney immediately after settlement, leaving me and my minor son unrepresented, broke and disadvantaged. When I last saw her to retrieve my disorganized and partial files, Peasley was consulting with a new client. Certainly not retired. This attorney is not a family law attorney, as she did not represent me or my son to the best of her ability.

She recommended me for a head doctor review but my x wife attempted suicide in front of me and she didn’t recommend nothing for her talking about the mother had concerns about my mental health. I went to college for psychology & computer science my wife was pushed through school since 3rd grade according to my x. This lady said I was defaming her but it was what my x told me. My x feeds my 2 year old bread and leaves him upstairs while she entertains her male friend down stairs but I need a head doctor to see my children and I was the one who filed for custody didn’t suggest anything for the mother. Subsequently the mother assaulted her daughter. Kicked her children out of their bedrooms for her new boyfriend and his pregnant baby mother. Now she suggested I have supervised visits when I homeschooled 5 of my children. What rational functioning human being does this. She attempted to off herself in front of me but I have to go to the psychiatrist. Unbelievable

You always see and hear how serious domestic violence is but I pray no one ever finds out the way I did that your not valued, respected and Judge Jackie Bernard was more sympathetic to my abuser than me. The defendant cried & had the nerve to bring up that it was our daughters bday but never wished her a happy bday nothing & this is same father who left his daughter with no water in the home!!! Never said sorry, never apologized in court or otherwise but said he hasn’t always been a good person, more like never has. He’s almost 50 doing same stuff with a mile long record. He knew exactly how to play on the judges feelings & it worked! You’d think she’d see he’s got those charges before! I was there for a bail revocation hearing filed for good reason! From the minute I got there Julia Wilt treated me like I was the one who did something & actually told me more than once that she was just filling in & it wasnt her case so it didn’t matter to her! Said horrible things to me & my abuser got away with deliberately hurting/punishing me & our daughter which clearly states on the bail conditions PA18 section 4953 they’re not allow to retaliate against witness/victim but that’s exactly what he did. No one cared he shut the water off at our home on us, or contacted me several times! They approached me saying he wanted to make a plea! Of course he did, he was scared he was going to jail bc he KNEW what he did! That tells you right there. But I was getting told by the DA the judge prob wouldn’t revoke it. Glad to know she cares more for the abuser than the victim! From the public defender complaining about how long it took when it wasn’t my fault that their assistant DA’s don’t know how to treat people especially victims with common decency & respect & that I had to wait for another assistant DA to come. After knowing what just happened how fair is that to even think I’m in any position to talk about a plea. They just wanted a conviction, could care less about me or how he ruined our lives & I said he shouldn’t get a better deal than what was offered & they tell me ok 2 years & sneak in there he gets done in one on good behavior. So he doesn’t get any consequences for terrorizing the victim AND witness but gets what HE wants! How do any of them sleep at night is beyond me. It’s immoral & criminal how I was treated. Shame on The judge for being so lenient & sympathetic to a women beater and the DA’s office not looking out for the victim/witness. I’m emotionally messed up over this.

Carol is not experience in family law and should not be practicing. She drew out a very simple matter for a custody meeting. By doing this she overcharged me for her time. When I moved to another lawyer, her office charged me large fees to move my files (she only had me as a client for a few weeks) and charged for operational fees to send me my money back. In the end we spent a lot of money with no return. I do not recommend her as a lawyer.

If you have deep pockets, she a good lawyer! I think her fees are outrageous! Believe me you will get charged for everything..... Even something that has to be resent BC you didn't receive it in the mail. When they claim to have sent it. So you get charged all over again for somebody else's mistake!

Hired this Attourney to aid in termination of rights. The mother a vile abusive monster. Margaret abandoned her firm and cases without notification. She left many cases high and dry for a prestigious new position. We lost now exposing our children to the worst possible scenario. We are now expected to hand our children over to an abusive, high, disgusting person who fills their heads full of craziness and hate. They were thriving. Happy well adjusted kids who overcame so much trauma. She really should be reprimanded. She who professes to help children abandoned us. They will suffer greatly. There is no pain like having to hand your children over to the person who severely abused them.

I’m a current client and I’m very frustrated with Stuart’s cognitive abilities. He’s not a skilled communicator, he’s not focused- but he never forgets to send a bill. He will take years longer than needed with your affairs whenever possible. If you have worked with him I suggest you have another professional recheck his work for his regular style of overbroadness and conclusory view of your affairs. 2-Dimensional view of the world which prevent him from researching multiple issues at once. Not a business man, even if he gave advice I wouldn’t trust it as the highest and best use of your resources. Not emotionally intelligent and liable to cause fights among your decedents. Poor network of resrouces- will refer you to or have you associate with incompetent attorneys (I’m not sure if the good ones will work with him, it’s a small town.) My family left behind a large estate and even we cannot afford Stuart’s wasteful meandering approach, It’s very sad for my family my father would be frustrated beyond measure with his lack of structure and results

I hired joe Spratt for a custody issue when moved from beaver county to Allegheny with my son that i had custody of 2 hearings were held in a week without me knowing he never called me the notice was sent to the wrong address. When I asked him what happened he said nothing Not to worry, the next week i found out they ordered me to move my son back to beaver and that i lost custody. He lied about everything tried to blame my old attorney and then shut me out, I wouldn't recommend him to anybody for anything when i went to the bar association about it they also shut me out and said he was a nice guy. He is the worst as far as i'm concerned

Joseph Spratt does not work in the 20th century. He does not have a receptionist or legal aid. He refuses to use email or fax, return phone calls, or take payment in any form other than cash or check in person or by mail. He will ignore both your communications and wishes as a client. He actively worked against the interests of our case in closed-door sessions with the opposing counsel and the judge. His advice and judgement cannot be trusted.

I had a consultation with this lawyer that lasted 30 minutes. I was charged the full fee and told within the first 10 minutes he would not represent me in a very clear cut case we could have easily won. He just seemed more interested in talking about local politics. My ex is in rehab and clearly a neglectful parent. He is a danger to our child. The delay in filing an emergency petition for custody exposed our child to even more abuse and neglect. I would avoid this lawyer at all costs.

Christine's service is disappointing. She is anything but helpful. She does not return phone calls or emails. I've been waiting a month for a response. Her staff is not friendly either. They make you feel as if you are bothering them when you try to reach Christine. If you're looking for a divorce lawyer..keep looking!

Worst experience with a professional I've ever had. Similar to other reviews, she took extended amounts of time to respond to important matters and simple questions after she insisted that she was easy to reach. She was incredibly hard to reach or speak with! State filing documents were rejected after she had completed them. When we tried notifying her of the rejections, she completely blew us off. She stopped responding to emails, returning phone calls, and wouldn't even schedule a face to face meeting. Very, very unprofessional! Do not hire!

She took over 6 months to write up our agreement which was already agreed upon. Then made several spelling errors and didnt even get MY address right. Its been 8 months since i hired her and still have not see results! She is impossible to get a hold of and NEVER once returned a single message ive left her! The whole time she made me feel as though she has sides with my ex and doesnt seem to care about what is best for my child at all. She is very rude and hasnt fought for me even though she is MY lawyer. Currently looking for a new one as we speak!

If I could give her no stars, that would be more fitting. We hired Erica for an adoption case. She was very friendly and would answer immediately when we first began speaking with her last summer. We decided to hire her, and soon after - we weren't able to get a hold of her. Until finally, we didn't hear from her at all anymore. As we found out, she took a job elsewhere and just left the firm. Our case was one she dumped on the only other lawyer in the practice (the owner of the business) who lives in LA. He also got slammed with all the other cases that she decided not to continue with. We made an agreement on our case cost with Erica which we later found out she didn't specify in her general contract, so our agreement with her wasn't honored, and we ended up having to pay 1k more than we agreed. Not to mention, our case got put on a back burner b/c of the workload the remaining lawyer had, so it took us an entire year for the adoption to be complete. We waited 8 months after the court approval of termination of parental rights, just to get an adoption court date that worked with the lawyers schedule. Erica's assistant was the only reason our case got handled after everything. What Erica did was irresponsible, careless, and unprofessional. She left us feeling like we didn't matter and our case didn't matter, and left us all with a big mess to try and sort out. I would never recommend her to anyone.

I have been involved and a very intense custody case for quite sometime. I hired this lawyer after steadily using a different one for several years. When we first met with her she seemed competant. So we hired her to represent us. After we begin signing contracts she became a complete disappointment. I had very important things that needed to be filed in court and she never once did it on time. Things would come and go and continue to build up without her ever addressing issues that were brought to her attention. When we first met this lawyer and before we hired her she was not that difficult to get a hold of. However once again after we begin signing contracts she basically disappeared. The office telephone number goes directly to voicemail all day every day. You can leave a message but I assure you that no one will call you back. To this day I have called many times and have never once received a call back. She also provided an email which also suddenly became a useless line of communication. This goes on for months and months at a time. I can be understanding if someone doesn't immediately get back to you I can also be understanding if they can at least get back to you quickly and then get back to you more in depth later. But to not be able to get a hold of your attorney for months at a time is completely unacceptable. When you're in the middle of any custody case it is already difficult enough. And I'm also aware than dealing with lawyers sometimes that can be difficult as far as always getting an answer when you want it. But the link that this went with this attorney with absolutely positively ridiculous. We were never really given a reason except that she was sorry. That doesn't really help a person when you need them to be in court representing you. I would never rehire this attorney ever again.

Google search his DUI arrest on March 23, 2012. Read the negative comments from prior clients and his colleagues. Then ask yourself "do I really want him representing me as my attorney?" If you know what's good for yourself, you'll work with a respectful attorney who deserves to be paid your hard earned dollars. He's experienced but very self-serving and not trustworthy. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Attorney Michael Whare acted unethically when working with my case. He showed very little consideration or compassion, lacked knowledge about the law, and was not trustworthy. Michael Whare dealt with me in an abrupt manner, crossed boundaries that he should not have, and did not do his job. I would never recommend him. He lacks empathy and is not an attorney who will be with you ever step of the way. An attorney should be a support during a difficult time in someone's life, but instead Michael Whare treated me as I was a burden.

What an Adoption Lawyer Can Do for You

An adoption lawyer specializes in navigating the legal complexities of the adoption process, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved - the adoptive parents, birth parents, and the child - are protected. They assist families through the different types of adoption, such as domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, and private adoptions. Adoption lawyers ensure that the adoption process complies with state, federal, and international laws, and handle any legal issues that may arise during the process, such as terminating parental rights, conducting home studies, and finalizing the adoption.

If you're looking to adopt or if you're a birth parent considering placing your child for adoption, an adoption lawyer can guide you through the legal requirements and ensure the process goes smoothly.

When Should I Hire an Adoption Lawyer?

You should consider hiring an adoption lawyer in the following situations:

  • Private or independent adoption: If you’re adopting a child directly from the birth parents without the involvement of an adoption agency, a lawyer is essential to draft and review all legal documents, including consent forms and parental rights termination agreements.
  • Foster care adoption: If you’re adopting a child from foster care, a lawyer can help navigate the legal process, ensure the child’s eligibility for adoption, and represent you in court to finalize the adoption.
  • Stepparent or relative adoption: If you’re adopting a stepchild or a relative, a lawyer can assist in terminating the parental rights of the biological parent and ensure the adoption is completed legally and efficiently.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are complex, involving multiple layers of laws from the U.S. and the child’s birth country. A lawyer can help navigate immigration requirements and ensure compliance with international treaties like the Hague Convention.
  • Contested adoptions: If a birth parent changes their mind about the adoption or there is a dispute over parental rights, a lawyer can represent you in court and ensure that the adoption proceeds legally.
  • Adoption for same-sex couples: If you're a same-sex couple looking to adopt, a lawyer can help ensure that your adoption complies with state laws and that both parents have equal legal rights to the child.
  • Birth parent representation: If you’re a birth parent considering adoption, a lawyer can ensure that your rights are protected, help you understand the legal implications of terminating parental rights, and ensure that your decision is legally sound.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help avoid legal complications and ensure that the adoption is legally finalized as smoothly as possible.

What Does an Adoption Lawyer Do?

An adoption lawyer provides a variety of legal services, ensuring that the adoption process is completed in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing legal paperwork: Adoption lawyers handle all the necessary paperwork, including petitions to terminate parental rights, consent forms, and final adoption decrees. They ensure that the adoption is in line with state, federal, and international laws.
  • Conducting home studies: Some adoptions require a home study to evaluate the prospective adoptive family. While a social worker usually conducts the study, a lawyer can ensure that the process complies with legal requirements and that the report is submitted correctly.
  • Terminating parental rights: Lawyers assist in terminating the legal rights of the biological parents, either voluntarily through signed consent or involuntarily through court proceedings if necessary.
  • Representing clients in court: Adoption lawyers represent adoptive parents, birth parents, or other parties in court hearings to finalize the adoption or resolve disputes.
  • Navigating international adoption laws: For international adoptions, a lawyer helps ensure that all legal requirements, both in the U.S. and the child’s home country, are met, including securing the child’s visa and citizenship.
  • Providing legal advice: Adoption lawyers guide clients through each step of the adoption process, advising them on their rights and obligations, as well as any potential legal issues that may arise.
  • Drafting post-adoption agreements: In some cases, especially open adoptions, a lawyer can help draft post-adoption agreements that specify the level of contact between the adoptive and birth parents.

How Are Adoption Lawyers Paid?

Adoption lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the adoption and the time involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many adoption lawyers charge a flat fee for handling the entire adoption process. This is common for straightforward adoptions, such as stepparent or foster care adoptions, where the legal work is relatively predictable.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex adoptions, such as contested or international adoptions, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $200 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: In cases where the adoption process may take longer or involve more legal work (e.g., termination of parental rights or court disputes), a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront, so you understand the total cost of the adoption and any additional expenses that may arise during the process.

How Much Does an Adoption Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an adoption lawyer depends on the type of adoption and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Stepparent or relative adoption: Legal fees for these types of adoptions typically range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on whether the adoption is contested or requires a court hearing.
  • Domestic private adoption: The legal fees for a private adoption usually range from $5,000 to $10,000, including drafting documents, terminating parental rights, and finalizing the adoption in court.
  • International adoption: International adoptions are generally more expensive, with legal fees ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the adoption and the child’s country of origin.
  • Contested adoption: If the adoption is contested and involves court disputes, legal fees may range from $10,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the length and complexity of the court proceedings.

In addition to lawyer fees, adoptive parents should also be aware of additional costs such as court filing fees, home study fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

Top Questions to Ask an Adoption Lawyer

Before hiring an adoption lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and knowledge to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with adoptions?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with the specific type of adoption you’re pursuing, whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, or stepparent adoption.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or hourly rate and ask for a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in your adoption.
  3. What are the legal requirements for my adoption?
Ask the lawyer to explain the legal steps involved in your adoption and any specific requirements that may apply to your case, such as home studies or parental consent.
  4. How long will the adoption process take?
Adoption timelines can vary depending on the type of adoption, so ask the lawyer for an estimate of how long the process will take, including any potential delays.
  5. What are the common challenges in adoption cases?
Ask about any potential legal challenges that could arise during the adoption process and how the lawyer plans to address them.
  6. Will I need to go to court?
Depending on the adoption, you may need to attend court hearings. Ask the lawyer whether your presence will be required and what to expect during these hearings.
  7. Can you help with post-adoption issues?
Ask the lawyer if they can assist with any post-adoption issues, such as obtaining the child’s birth certificate, finalizing the child’s U.S. citizenship (for international adoptions), or drafting post-adoption contact agreements.

How to Check the Credibility of an Adoption Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable adoption lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no disciplinary actions on their record.
  • Look for adoption experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in adoption law and have experience handling cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on adoption cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for lawyers who are members of adoption-focused organizations like the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys (AAAA), which can indicate their expertise in this field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with an adoption lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Information about the child and birth parents: Provide any available information about the child you’re adopting (e.g., age, country of origin, current living situation) and the birth parents, if applicable.
  • Adoption preferences: Be clear about the type of adoption you’re pursuing - whether it’s domestic, international, foster care, stepparent, or private - and discuss any preferences you have regarding the child’s age, background, or special needs.
  • Legal documents (if applicable): If you’ve already begun the adoption process or have signed any agreements, bring copies of all relevant legal documents, such as consent forms or agency agreements.
  • Questions about the adoption process: Prepare a list of questions about the legal steps involved in your adoption, potential timelines, and any concerns you may have about the process.
  • Financial considerations: Be ready to discuss your budget for legal fees and any additional costs, such as home studies, court fees, and travel expenses (for international adoptions).

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for your adoption journey.
