I contacted this firm to possibly take on a bad faith case. I spoke with Mr. Kottoor a couple times. He was very kind and knew his stuff. We ended up going with a different lawyer we contacted earlier, but based on Zubin's demeanor and knowledge I would absolutely have trusted my case to him and this firm.

I contacted Leanne about an issue. She was kind enough to review my request and while she could not help me she did some research and followed up with multiple recommendations for folks who could assist. I really appreciate her and her assistant Cassandra taking the time out of their day to help me. We do not see people helping others for no other reason than to be a kind person enough anymore and I appreciate their going above and beyond to help me.

I had a limited amount of time to figure out a family legal matter (military on leave). Ms. T-Shura saw me on fairly short notice and helped me though multiple issues that arouse while I was there. She was courteous and professional. She also identified a few problems that I didn't realize were happening, and helped me through them. I will definitely use them again if I need a lawyer anywhere near that region again.

I was the passenger in a MVA. I was optimistic that responsible party would be concerned about my injuries and help me by getting insurance information to me timely. However that did not occur and I realized I needed a lawyer. I contacted Phoenix Injury Law. They have been wonderful to work with. They told me I needed to focus on getting better and they would focus on everything else. What a relief! Their follow up, compassion and concern has been evident throughout this entire ordeal. I own and operate a small primary practice in Tucson. Lisa Paine has been our lawyer for the past 5-6 years, and she has been remarkable. She is personable, timely, and has done a wonderful job including helping us establish our LLC, developing business and consulting contracts, and other various legal needs we have over the years. She is a gem to work with. I highly recommend her for that service. Additionally, my husband and I hired her to complete our will and trust. She helped us navigate difficult decisions and created a very important document that will protect our family in the future. I also highly recommend Lisa for estate planning. Her price point is fair as well.

I cannot recommend Josephine Hallam, Kristie Ortega, and Hallam Law Group highly enough. From the very beginning, they were relentlessly focused on my well being and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to my case. Their precision, strategy, and deep understanding of the law were evident at every stage of the process. What truly sets them apart is their intentional approach as experienced trial attorneys—every motion, argument, and decision was calculated and purposeful. They didn’t just react; they anticipated, strategized, and executed with a level of skill that only comes from true courtroom experience. Their ability to break down complex legal issues, communicate clearly, and keep me informed made a stressful process much more manageable. Beyond their expertise, their availability and dedication were unmatched. I never felt like just another client. They took the time to ensure I was heard, understood, and empowered every step of the way. If you’re looking for an attorney who is not only highly skilled but also genuinely committed to fighting for you, Josephine Hallam and her team are the ones you want in your corner.

This truly has to be the BEST criminal defense attorney association in Tucson Arizona hands down. THE FEDERAL KING IS KATSERELLIS LAW! I hired Kat on day 1 after a free consultation and he devoted so many hours of his time to me and I was able to go over my entire case with him and explain to him how the previous attorney I have was neglecting me and not willing to cooperate with me on anything within the interest I found best fit for my case with my brother. so within 48 hours I had an answer on a Plea, within 9 days got a plea agreement, within 1.5 Months with Kat’s word given was able to get me to court to begin the process to finish my case, and in under 90 days was able to successfully execute and close out a 6 month incarceration that was potentially looking at 33-41 months maximum. Kat is the most well respected individual, COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO HIS ATTENTIVENESS and he is ALWAYS ON CALL 24-7! Kat has THE MOST KIND HEARTED paralegal that works with him and her name is Jasmine. She was always on call and answering me any time I needed her to. Jasmine is so organized with coordinating anything Kat needed throughout my case and the best part is their a dynamic duo and were able to dominate my case for me and make sure we all were successful within the outcome. Kat and Jasmine know how to be patient when it came to any emotions that got in the way throughout this case because of how difficult our prosecutor was. Every single time I texted or called one of them answered. They always emailed me anything I asked for, and never once did they say No to me. I always was given anything I needed from the both of them. Truly I thank them from the bottom of my heart for executing this case and helping save my brothers life. Kat and Jasmine both helped get my brothers life back and help me get my life back on track with so much support because they knew how difficult it was for me to balance an incarcerated brother while also having to be on the outside free world and make sure he was okay at the same time. I told Kat that a miracle would happen at our sentencing and that’s exactly what happened, a time served miracle thanks to Kat! The level of intelligent, integrity, loyalty, respect, and authentic work ethic that this man has is BEYOND BEAUTIFUL. KATSERELLIS LAW FIRM IS THE BEST LAW FIRM IN TUCSON ARIZONA! God forbid if anything ever happens again, Kat is on speed dial and will be retained immediately. I trust him with my entire life till the death of me. God bless this law firm for everything they did to save my families life.

I got stuck with this scheister lawyer when I filed a motion for a change of counsel and was met with consent verbal condescending, chastising abuse during our calls. He said, the reason you got me was because, you had issues with other attorneys. My other court appointed attorneys screwed me over by not getting my phone where I had evidence to clear my charges and circumvent me to take a plea. When I realize it would ruin my life, she would not undo the plea which I found too late I could have. Another Lawyer, dumped me off on her investigator who told me the system was not fair. That women got away with ruining your life. How they lost a really strong case. If I did not trust them, to get another team. He says, obvious they did and they withdrew and I got appointed." No, I motion the courts three weeks before my previous attorney withdrew and had to remind her to withdraw from my case. Kyle patronizes me saying, I have been doing post-conviction relief for eight years, nine years, something like that.' You are the first client to call me to know about your case two days after I gotten it. "This is not my first rodeo." So, my case is like a circus or a rodeo to him. When I ask questions about my charges he said, “If you have a problem with the classifications an offense, take it up with legislator. Don't take it up with me.” I get ridiculed for calling him first. He had my case for a month and he did nothing. I motion the court again and was denied and stuck with him. My previous team had an investigator who were going to look into other angles for my case. He refused to get one. I had a free consultation from another attorney which I could not afford who told me all my lawyers were giving me in effective council and all Kyle did was read the report and replied he saw nothing wrong. However, he said, if I did not sign a plea, you would have won at trial. Kyle put in no effort in my case and was vindictive not to withdraw and the courts made me stay with him I was not able to represent myself. I am glad I am the second person in a month who has submitted a negative review on Kyle Green and others will come forward.

I’m not a lawyer. I don’t know what information is relevant, what needs to be substantiated with evidence, or how I’m allowed to communicate in a courtroom under these pretenses. That’s why I hired an attorney. I was assaulted by a man who lied to me about his identity. His true identity revealed that he is the author of a book that advocates for the assault of women. Obviously had I known that, I never would have gone out with him. There was an extreme amount of manipulation that followed the assault. The incident culminated with an altercation at my gym that prompted me to file a restraining order, which I was granted. I hired Kyle when the order was challenged. I filed a case against this man with the local police. What I had to say was compelling enough that an undercover detective showed up to the hearing. I got a delayed start to working with Kyle because his team couldn't even be bothered to ensure they put the correct name on the contract. Virtually no information was requested of me prior to the hearing. When asked about text communication I did tell him there wasn't much- my communication with my abuser was months ago and I didn't remember the full extent of our conversation. A prepared attorney would have asked to see the texts anyway- the burden of proof is on the filer and he had literally nothing else to do to prepare. When we got to the courtroom I noticed my witness wasn’t there, so I called him. He explained that Kyle told him he was going to confirm with him and that that didn't happen. Regardless of who’s error it was, I asked if he needed to come and Kyle said no. The hearing started very late and he lives right next to the courthouse and could have made it if I had insisted. I would have insisted had I known that I wouldn't be able to reference anything that happened at the gym that day without his testimony. I don’t understand why Kyle wouldn’t have communicated this to me knowing the impact it would have on my ability to address any part of that very scary event. The fact that my abuser lied to me about his identity is far from irrelevant. Mesa PD are the ones who informed me of this- I had no idea that I would need to provide a witness from Mesa PD about how I arrived at this information. The judge did not allow me to say a single word about this. This is procedural information Kyle would have known as an attorney. I failed to meet my burden of proof- or rather KYLE did. He failed to do his due diligence and look at the texts. He failed to connect with the witness, and failed to advise me appropriately when asked about whether the witness needed to come. He failed to provide evidence regarding the information I was given by the police on the true identity of my abuser, or to advise me appropriately The worst thing happened- the protective order was dropped. Had I been doing this on my own without Kyle’s council I would have taken the due diligence to research what was required of me and I would have shown up more prepared than I did with him by my side. I seriously doubt a detective would have been in that room on my behalf had my account really been that unreliable or outlandish. The outcome of that hearing obliterated any chance I'll ever have of justice for the sodomy I endured. It got much worse though, my abuser requested attorney fees and they were granted. Kyle decided it wasn’t important to communicate with me as his client before he challenged the order. I’m angry that he sent off the objection without so much as asking me about it or having me review the letter. Had he taken a single moment to talk to me, he would have known that I spent most of last year on unemployment, as I was forced to restructure my business. He completely failed to represent my interests, as he took zero time to understand

Melissa was great to work with. Either Melissa or her paralegal kept in contact with me making communication quick and easy. All documentation is performed electronically so I received all correspondence from Melissa, the courts, and opposing counsel in a timely manner, not waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I am very satisfied with the service provided by Melissa, her paralegal, the client coordinators, and the entire office staff.

This is my first experience utilizing an attorney. It turned out to be smooth and non-intimidating. The team was very helpful and responded quickly to my concerns. They were even happy to help me with a few questions out of their scope of expertise. I would highly recommend.

When I first hired Keith for my family law case, it was clear he can be a brilliant attorney if he chooses to be. However in my case he was lazy and disinterested. He had the ability to help me and he chose not to for whatever reason. My overall impression is that he is arrogant and patronizing and it’s hit or miss whether he will take an interest in your case or not. Unfortunately for me I wasted thousands before I realized he simply didn’t care.

Keith Berkshire is a highly skilled attorney with expertise in Family Law. He handled my divorce case with professionalism and care every step of the way. Keith is very professional and provided expert advice during the entire duration of my divorce case. He was strategic in his approach, answered my questions thoroughly, and handled the opposing party effectively. I was impressed by his attention to detail even weeks or months after discussing specific details. He always had my best interest in mind and is very knowledgeable in legal matters. In short, Keith is sharp and can skillfully handle any legal matter with precision. I am grateful to Keith for the expert legal support he provided me during a stressful period in my life. Keith was my attorney during a very complicated case that lasted three years. Despite the highly stressful circumstances, I always enjoyed our interactions. Keith was professional, insightful, and highly strategic. He has a brilliant mind and continuously amazed me at the details about my case that he was immediately able to recall. In the end, we won our case and thanks to Keith's expertise, justice was absolutely served. I would highly recommend Keith to anyone who is going through a divorce, especially those involving children. My children and I are now free and able to live our lives in the best, healthiest way possible.

Dean took his time to take my call at 4:30am! They're really there for you 24/7. My sister was contesting an order of protection at 8:30am the same day I contacted this law firm. It seemed impossible to have a lawyer get involved with her case at the time. Dean reassured me that he would help her and if the court case didn't go in her favor to contact him immediately after court and he would get us in to have a consultation with no charge. Fortunately, for my sister it did end up going in her favor. Dean called me after the hearing to ask how court went. Dean really cared about my sister's situation and provided excellent customer service and care. I would highly recommend this law firm. 10 out of 10!

Mr Ed Hamel and his para were consummate professionals throughout the entire process. Mayes Telles as a firm was very fair with me with regard to cost. I was told one upfront cost and they stuck to their word. I feel strongly that my outcome would’ve been much worse without Mr Hamel and Mayes Telles.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
