It started with the "most unique case" Mr. Sass had seen in 30yrs.. And ended in the best positive outcome I could imagine! If not for your dedication and all the time you and your team spent on my case, I'd be struggling to find a place to call home for me and my kids. Mr. Sass was not only caring and supportive in helping me deal with the situation, but he also took the time to listen to me and he made sure I understood everything. For everything you do in life, I hope it always goes in your favor! I hope your pillow is cold on both sides, your charger works at every single angle, you NEVER stub your toe, you eat a FANTASTIC meal today and get lucky and find $20 on the floor! I hope you all have an amazing year because YOU DESERVE ALL OF IT!!

I requested twice to have a consultation with Laura. I spoke with the receptionist twice. No return call. If you don’t want to help someone that’s fine. At least have the courtesy y to say so. I will give 1 star for the reception staff who at least showed interest.

Amy Spilman is an exceptional attorney, the very best that I have found for family law in the Metro Detroit area. She has a commanding knowledge of the law, is punctual, stays on top of developments in her cases, and above all is an honest and caring person. She is a moral person who is of the highest character and quality. I say this with full confidence as she has been my attorney for more than six years and I have carefully observed her in litigation throughout this period. She has successfully litigated a number of extremely complex and difficult family law issues on my behalf. I have spent much of my career working with talented and renowned attorneys in a different area of law and I can easily tell the difference between a mediocre and an exceptional attorney. Amy is exceptional by any measure and is at the very top of her field, without exception. I interviewed several top local attorneys and actually hired two separate attorneys prior to engaging Amy. I have seen her comfortably negotiate and succeed in extremely difficult litigation against some of the best family law attorneys in the area. She is simply the very best and frankly, she is my hero.

I have been working with Trish for over five years, as I am constantly in court with the other parent. She is straight and to the point, explains why you should or should not move forward with certain motions and provides ongoing guidance as needed. She is not a money hungry attorney that will just take a case to take a case. She will candidly advise as to what is worth your money perusing and what is not, avoiding unnecessary costs and drama. We have won every single case, which speaks for itself and she is well versed and knowledgeable in family law. She is also quick to respond to emails and calls and her staff is always friendly, helpful and amazing.

Gary only contact two times and was far from consistent. you need results and a informative response let it be known to keep looking elsewhere.

I needed a lawyer and knew nothing about the situation that I was in. Mr. Kennedy was not only incredibly clear and positive in our communication about what would be taking place, but he was timely and very professional as well. I would recommend him to anyone that needed legal assistance. His pricing was incredibly fair and improved my situation a great deal based on his knowledge and expertise. In the beginning she was fine, but at the end, she didnt even bother to prepare my husband for his interview, had an original document that we needed, said we had it and then the next minute it appeared, surprisingly. All she did was take our money at the end. Then when thIngs didnt go our way she referred us to another attorney, because she couldn't "commit" to helping us further. The best thing she did was send us to this Attorney, stay far away. Due your due diligence. Now my family is separated, because of Tamara French. By the way I will be reporting her to the ABA!!!

I noticed most of the great reviews are from 5-7 years ago… maybe she was good then. However, my experience would be a D+…. I say that because in the beginning she did have fire… somewhere in the middle to the end she had no interest and we lost. She stated she would call to see us through the process… haven’t heard from her since. I reached out to her and the shoulder was cold. As if I was bothering her. Well, thanks for ur low energy help.

I feel compelled to author my review after reading several reviews from fake clients/imposters or deadbeat whiners (yes you are the ones who typically end up being the deadbeat parents). I went through a lengthy custody battle in Livingston County Courts, from 2004 to 2007. I am a male so I was already behind the 8 ball as almost every court in Michigan always gives advantage to the female. (how is that inclusive or equal? write your congress person) So I had to bring in some serious law power to make a solid attempt to get the custody I deserved. My daughters mom lied about everything on her questionnaire and the court actually believed all of it, so it was an interesting and long up hill battle. After this long duration Julia was able to get the agreement we set out to accomplish. All along this journey Julia and her office staff were nothing less than exceptionally professional. Her rates are comparable to other attorneys and her billing is very detailed. There is nothing hidden about what occurs during this time, other than many people are NOT PAYING ATTENTION to understand what you will be paying for. To say the least, there were no hidden charges and I was always billed for the time spent in court or for talking with Julia (or an attorney). As with any Business, there are no freebies. I would recommend Julia to any of my family or friends as she and her staff are simply THE BEST!!

I had a very disappointing experience with J. Black & Associates, P.L.C., particularly with their communication and billing practices. After paying $250 for a one-hour consultation with Attorney Bechtel, I decided not to proceed with their services. However, I was surprised to receive an invoice for $431.25, despite never signing an agreement with them or authorizing any additional services. I disputed the charges, and while the firm adjusted the bill to $360, I still found it concerning that I was charged for interactions that were not clearly communicated as billable. Julia contacted me after I had already decided not to use their services to discuss my case further. During that call, I agreed to change a court date but ultimately chose to keep the original date without representation due to the potential risks. There was never any mention that discussing these changes would result in extra charges. What’s most frustrating is that I was referred to this firm by a previous client who had positive experiences, which makes this situation even more disappointing. I never visited their office or met them in person, yet it seems they charge for every word exchanged. It’s sad and unprofessional to see lawyers prioritizing profit over transparency and trust. I’d advise anyone considering this firm to confirm all fees and potential charges upfront. Make sure you understand exactly what will be billed, because apparently, even speaking to a receptionist could end up costing you.

Stay far away! Dennis McCarthy is the most incompetent lawyer I’ve ever had the displeasure of working with. We were transferred to him when Mike Nolan left the firm. He refused to return calls and forced me to respond to opposing counsel myself so I wouldn’t miss deadlines to respond but had no problem sending bills for work he did not do. I left the firm, he still owes over $5000 back to us for excess retainer which of course he is not responding to. I just spoke to his accountant Mary Ann and she states she can’t release money without him, leave him another voicemail (it’s been weeks with no answer). Terrible!

I had the displeasure of dealing with Lisa Litton. I was the Plaintiff acting in Pro Se (as my own attorney). She defended the person I was suing. I highly recommend you record any private communication with her. When the Judge asked us to try to settle I gave her my terms and she lied to two judges about what the term was in order to not make her client look like a fool for not taking the deal. Two judges? After I filed my civil suit against her client months later she filed a defamation suit against me because her client didn't like I was saying she stole from me and broke our contract. In the defamation suit Litton twisted the facts and did not include the document that would have refuted her claim. She also was supposed to submit the initial disclosures 14 days after my answer and didn't submit them for almost two months. Litton sent me an email on a Friday night telling me we had paperwork to submit to the judge by the following Tuesday and I better get it to her by Monday at 3 pm. I had spent all weekend away from my family researching to understand how to respond to the paperwork. She knew this paperwork needed to be submitted for over two months and waited until the last minute. During my deposition she stuttered and was confused and didn't know how to respond to my answers against her client. In court she showed cowardace when she failed to take responsibility for not filing the dismissal when the Judge told her to. Instead she allowed me to take the blame. Email communications with her were condescending, harassing and accusatory. And when she missed a deadline to respond to my motion requesting discovery evidence, she gave me the evidence and claimed to do it under "the spirit of cooperation." I have delt with unethical attorneys in the past, both killed themselves. This woman is in the same class.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
