This firm has represented and assisted many of my close friends and family over the last few years. I couldn’t recommend them more! If the solution isn't clear, they will work as a team to figure it out. Always honest and truthful, and that’s needed when going through the legal process!

This firm has been a pleasure to work with. They do not go into anything blind. Stuart Collis is always very prepared when the date comes. He has been a blessing in more ways than just representing my case. He is very humble and clearly knows how to do his job. Friendly and very curtious of my needs as a client. He is patient but strikes like a snake when the truth needs to be told. I can honestly say I am very satisfied with the entire office staff. They definitely make you feel like family.

I have used Lori Schmeltzer a few times throughout the years and most recently she has prepared a will for both my husband and I. Planning who may control your future health care and financial matters is extremely important, and we are very happy with our decision to use Lori. She explained the process to us carefully and then helped us understand the various questions that we needed to answer in very easy-to-understand terms. I am very pleased with Lori's services, and would definitely recommend her to anyone needing legal services.

I had two speeding tickets I never contested and that prevented me from being employed at a very well paying career because of strict insurance policies. I had to wait 3 years to be eligible, so I searched out an attorney to help get them off my record. I consulted with multiple lawyers prior to contacting Ryan and most were overall disinterested in such a minor case and wanted an exorbitant amount of money. Many also said what I wanted done couldn’t be done. Ryan was not only affordable, he promised me he would accomplish what I wanted. He effectively got two tickets expunged at least as far as background checks go which effectively expunged those two tickets. It allowed me to get hired at the company I desperately wanted to join. I’m extremely grateful as the career that otherwise was out of my reach for at least 3 years, I was able to begin. In one year I was able to buy a home and I owe a great deal of thanks to Ryan for opening that door for me.

I went to school with Mr. Streefkerk, so I naturally called him for representation. I faxed him my paperwork and we met for a consultation. My goals were to have my hearing date moved and to dismiss an illegitimate PPO that had been filed against me, with my main focus on getting court date moved. Mr. Streefkerk agreed that the allegations held no merit and ensured me it would be no problem to have the court date moved. We agreed on a price of $750, with no specific date established for payment. Mr. Streefkerk was subsequently unable to get the court date moved and I had to miss a vacation to attend my hearing. After this, I doubted Mr. Streefkerk's effectiveness as counsel and began questioning whether I should pay him to represent me in court. When there was no other movement on his behalf with my case and he began requesting money to move forward with anything, we decided to terminate our relationship. Since termination, Mr. Streefkerk has been extremly rude via text message and has sent messages to me such as "loser" and "deadbeat". I can assure you that I am neither. He informed me that he is very upset because I declined representation and he didn't make any money. I received a bill for $29 a couple weeks after our relationship had ended. I have since contacted other representation. My new attorney has much more experience than Mr. Streefkerk and was shocked that he was unable to complete a simple task, such as having a court date moved. My final opinion is that Mr. Streefkerk lacks the experience to be effective/persuasive within the judicial community, is very immature in regards to business practices and should only be trusted to handle the simplest of duties.

Let me just start off by saying for all the negative reviews left by people it’s far from the truth of what and who Varnum is. I’ve been a client of Varnum now almost 5 years. I have personally been in the office and spoke with the receptionist ladies, every time I feel welcomed like I am part of the family. my children are adored and loved they get snacks and candy and drinks every time. They love going to Varnum when Daddy has to talk or see his Attorneys. My lead attorney Jon M. Bylsma Managing Partner of the Firm, and Peter Smit who now is retired but still on my case. These two attorneys at Varnum Law are the face of Varnum Jon always answers my calls, texts, and emails, he protects me and my family. Best Attorney in America. Anything I need he does it for my family, he is a true Lawyer who after being 30 plus years with the firm shows what Varnum is really all about and their values and what they stand for. Varnum isn’t ripping clients off, that’s unethical, Varnum isn’t about doing unethical practices. Varnum has been around since the late 1800s, Varnum is a very reputable Law Firm to trust with your legal needs. They’re a community based law Firm in local charities, giving back to the Community in West Michigan. Nothing in life is perfect, but I can personally tell you if you hired a law firm like Varnum Attorneys at law you will never regret it, you will become family, a repeat client. I personally recommend hiring Varnum for all you legal issues, advice, and matters. Thank you Varnum Family, Jon M. Bylsma and Peter Smit for everything you keep doing for me and my family.

If I could put zero I would, Tina with the smoker voice was so rude, threatening and unprofessional to say the least. At first she was very kind but as soon as I told her I didn’t have the $800 she requested she threatened me with foreclosure and then some. What type of people hire someone this ridiculous 😂 and then to top it off she hung up on me twice! She was so rude to me but as soon as I was rude back she had an issue with me. Apparently they do agreements over the phone too? I wasn’t told that I was agreeing to something over the phone. I’m not 11 😭😂 save your money time and peace, instead of dealing with these people who don’t want to do a job but smoke a pack of cigs. She always so refused to put her boss on the phone which is crazy to me considering she’s the damn receptionist 😂

Well. I hired a big name lawyer SB office when I got hit by a drunk driver in 2022. After wasting a year and a half and being told that it's a waste of time, I fired them and called Kepes & Wine. I should've went with them first! Not only did they go above and beyond. They kept me informed every step of the way. They worked solidly on my case. They had it wrapped up in less than a year! I am extremely grateful for the due diligence of this company! Sadly, Hadley Wine passed away, but Ronald Smith and Sherry picked it up like nothing skipped a beat! I will definitely call them again and forward their information without hesitation to anyone who needs help!! Thank you doesn't seem enough for what they accomplished!!

Kepes & Wine PC took my less than ideal case that was turned down by a large law firm. I had pre-existing injuries from a car accident a decade prior that accelerated after a recent crash. They were thorough, professional, and family oriented. I felt like Rob was my big brother during my deposition. Sherry is diligent and responds quickly even through email. Their firm suffered what must have amounted to a tremendous loss this year with the death of a beloved attorney that kept in contact with me durning the early part of my case. I didn't know it until several months later because in their professionalism, they kept the ball moving. I would 100% recommend this firm to represent people that I care about. They'll do their very best to fight for you to be treated fairly in a system that's not set up to be fair to you.

Next to 0 communication even after repeat attempts. Called me the day before court to tell me he's dismissing my witness and after further discussion (after agreeing to pay another $1000 or he wouldn't continue) he decided he's going to file to move the date and withdraw as my attorney. Asked for an invoice of billable hours and the return of the remainder of my retainer and never got one. SAVE YOUR MONEY

I was provided with Ven's information from another trusted attorney through my insurance agency. Ven, Tom, and Mike were incredible to work with for a little over a year. My husband was hit by a semi-driver on his way to pick up our two young boys. Tom was at my house within a few days of the initial phone call (which was well over a two hour drive for him). He sat with me in my home and listened to all the details. He then explained in detail what it would look like signing on with them, as well as what this type of case would look like. Looking back, that information at that first meeting was extremely informative and things went exactly how they said. I felt prepared every single step of the way due to these professionals. These three men were able to win with their expertise which was significant. However, they were just as concerned with our well-being and checking in on me and my sons with how we were doing throughout the entire court case. As well as making sure I was protected through the courts. I would recommended them to anyone. The way they fought in court and were there by my side every step of the way is something I will never forget. They have reached out with just 'checking in' and 'thinking of you' texts after the court dates. Which made me feel more like a person and not just a case/number to them. I had two court cases going on at the time we worked together; one with them and one through my county. They were present and helpful as they could be with the other case. I am forever grateful to all three of these attorney's and their staff. I never felt alone and I was always kept in the loop via email, text, and phone calls.

Please do your research before hiring an immigration lawyer! We decided to reach out to Taft Law regarding an E2 business visa. We were told during our consultation that it would be around $6-8000. We talked it over and decided to go with them. We had a few more questions about the process in the next following days and we had told them we were going to go through with it and pay a retainer. After the first initial email we got from them me and my wife decided that we were no longer interested in pursuing that visa. Not because of the law firm but we decided that it was too risky of business for us and decided not to proceed. I sent them an email saying I was sorry and no longer wanted to proceed and apologized for wasting there time and that I was going to pay them for there time they had spent on our file. We had a 45 min consultation, a 15 min phone call followed by a 20 minute phone call. We had no idea that every second of each phone call was being billed out at $480/hour. Long story short they charged us $1740 for a Zoom Consultation, 2 phone calls and an email. And they said that price included things that they didn’t charge for as well, as if they were giving us a break at that price. I feel like they threw the charges at us only because we were no longer working with them. They quoted us 6-8k for the visa and they did about 5% of the work and billed us $1740? Something doesn’t add up. Unfair billing practices! I don’t expect them to work for FREE but $1740 for an email, 2 phone calls and a consultation is ridiculous. I would highly suggest you go elsewhere where they are more transparent with their prices. We are out the $1740 but it’s probably best as there quote of 6-8k would probably end up being 10-14k.

Never informed me of my deposition day and time so he called me 2 hours beforehand to show up. He never wore anything but a sweatsuit. This man is a CROOK

Do note that this institution will take far longer than any other to process a simple transcript request. Everywhere else does this electronically in one hour, this institution will take a full week - even though they receive $1,000 per credit hour more than any other institution.

I utilized Powers Chapman through Legal Shield for a traffic ticket I received. While my issue, unfortunately, wasn't covered, Steven Martin happily and thoroughly walked me through my options and next steps. What impressed me the most was that he listened to my questions and gave tailored, thoughtful responses (not just boilerplate). That can be frustratingly difficult to find, but I left impressed.

They just need an issue hand platted or silver spoon fed. Many blessings!, and finally no call, no follow up from one of the firm attorneys I retained. This concludes how poor unprofessional and irresponsible that is I have to appear in court now in less than 4 hours, and I have no access and tighed up to an appointment prior to and after. Just great people to work with....No thank you 7/3/2024 In ongoing issue with a nasty event with HERTZ livonia location on plymouth rd I envoloved this firm and instead of assisting me in this regard they took a complete neutral approach. and totally pointed the situation at me as the corporate attorney twisted the facts to cover thier tracks.I say great service. thats what you do to ypur clients is it not. this past few experiences I had I decided to save my money. I advise you to do the same thing.Good day!

At the beginning of 2024, I worked with Cody Black shortly after my Mother-In-Law passed away. She became sick, and things escalated quickly. We didn't have much time to react. Cody helped keep my wife and I sane throughout the process, and was there to offer advice every step of the way. Cody went out of his way to come meet with us in person on multiple occasions to help speed up the process, knowing that we were juggling a lot of emotions, and needing to physically be in the hospital for days on end. Cody's preparation helped save many headaches because of the knowledge and guidance he was able to provide leading up to the date of her passing. I would highly recommend reaching out to Cody in order to get estate planning in check. He taught me that it is never to early to start thinking about it. It is difficult to understand all the nuances, and having someone who has the knowledge there to help answer your questions, offer guidance, and be by your side through some incredibly tough times is invaluable. Cody was just that for us.

This attorney has employed a team that doesn't do anything. We had a payment that was posted in Nov and they didn't notice it until Jan...3 months later and proceeded with recourse based on them not seeing payment that later they confirmed they didn't see. Very rude staff (Sarah) who told my wife a completely different story. Threatened to hang up on me because she knew she was wrong and also threatened to charge me by the hour because again she was wrong and had nowhere else to go with the lies. Would not recommend this law firm to anyone. Terrible customer service and communication

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
