This may very well be the worst attorney around. He had my case from August of 2022 to August of 2023 and still never filed my case. He made promises and promises that he was ready to file but never did. All he wanted to do was have useless meetings after meetings discussing the same things over and over again. I finally found a new attorney.. I do not recommend him!

Mrs. Kostovski appears to be nice and seasoned. We met and I agreed to pay her $150.00 for a Jail visit in Oakland County to see my son. Unfortunately, when she arrived my son was moved to MDOC. I contacted Susan and informed her I would give her $25.00 for gas as she did attempt to visit my son. I received $75.00 back from the $150.00. Mrs. Kostovski said she reviewed documents related to my sons case. This lack of integrity was the sole basis for not moving forward with hiring her. Had she stuck with her written agreement on her business card of $150.00 for a jail visit I being a reasonable person would have considered further compensation. I was very disappointed but allowed her to refund me $75.00 totally blind sided me.

Ms. Lane was appointed to me for federal court lawyer by the justice system, i could not find any reviews about her , not good or bad, when i requested another attorney i was told that there are very few federal legal attorneys in michigan to support me, i was pretty much stuck with her. needless to say , things did not go well for me and after the fact, i found out that had she presented evidence to the grand jury in the first trial after my indictment was served i may not have been sentenced to federal prison. i felt as if she did not even take my case seriously, she did not ask me about important things that made all the difference when i went to court and she led me to believe that i was going to walk out of the court room on the day of sentencing until hours before the sentence , then she sprung on me that i was going to go to prison. im not trying to scare people from her but i wish i had a review to read about her before i went forward with my case. in my experience she should not be working with the federal system, she was often late for our appointments and joked about having lunch with the judge, this made me feel uncompfortable from the first day i met her, and my gut instincts were right.

My son entered in to a bitter, violent, and volatile divorce in July 2018. He reached out to Jeff because he is supposed to be a strong representative for fathers involved in a divorce. After hiring him on July 5, 2018, we found that my son's case was not held as a priority to Jeff. He often didn't return responses to emails or phone calls in a timely manner. Even though the safety of my son's children were at risk, he put other clients ahead of his case. When we brought this to his attention, he stated that he is busy and has other clients. Court paperwork in regard to temporary custody of the children was forwarded to my son for review without Jeff reviewing it first. There were many obvious mistakes including using the name of a judge that had retired 5 years ago, incorrect child support computation, incorrect directions for the exchange of the children, failure to include joint legal custody, failure to include that his spouse was no longer allowed in the home. When asked why the paperwork had not been properly reviewed, Jeff stated he was working on other cases and thought it best to get the information to my son as soon as possible. The most egregious action, however, was his biased opinion of my son and his chances of getting custody of his children. From day one, he used the word "jerk" when describing how a judge might look at my son. He told him the court system in which he had to file, was one of the worst ones to work with. When the friend of the court referee met with Jeff, he advised my son that the referee was not going to work with him and didn't even want to hear his case. Jeff advised my son to just accept whatever he could work out with his spouse's attorney as it would be the best he would get. This does not sound like an attorney that is willing to work for his client in his best interest. I would caution any male that is involved in a divorce to research very carefully before hiring an attorney to represent them. In the 6 weeks that Jeff represented my son, there was not one thing accomplished that would hold any weight in court. This allowed his wife to take his children, withold them from him, break into their house and take many of his belongings, and make constant threats. No one should go through this situation without an attorney that is willing to dig in and fight for them. We have since hired another attorney and are very pleased with her. She has gotten a court order that gives him time with his children, protection of his home, and personal safety.

I cantacted and hired Marie walker in may of 2017 looking for legal advice to deal with my ex and her taking it upon herself to decide parenting time with out talking to me. Marie suggested mediation, and accompanied me there, and I walked out of mediation with less time with my son. My ex was showing my son legal documents from Marie and the courts, and basically turning my son against after mediation. Marie’s advice was to try to co parent with my ex... this advice was given after I had explained to Marie multiple times that coparenting with my ex wasn’t working. My son became so angry that he destroyed my TV and keys my wife’s car as he was walking out of my house to return to his moms for 2 weeks. Marie’s advice was to press charges against my son for destruction of property, to create a record of his behavior, and to show him consequences for his actions. This was a mistake. When attending his juvenile hearing Marie then pulled me and my wife aside and told me she would never have pressed charges, and that an 11 year old boy should have 1 minute time out for every year he is old. She then told me that if I didn’t like her legal advice that I should find a new lawyer. By this time I was 3k in debt to her. My ex filed a motion for an emergency hear to remove my parenting time, as result of me pressing charges. When at court Marie wouldn’t even let me enter the court room, and bullied me into taking the opposing council’s parenting deal. I brought character witnesses and multiple documents to the hearing in my defense as good parent, and Marie wouldn’t let me submit them to the magistrate. When I did agreed with Marie she then said again “if you don’t like my legal advice, you can fire me and pay me in full” by this point I’m over 5k$ in debt to Marie walker. She calls me by the wrong name on court document, in corisponding emails, and legal documents to my ex’s lawyer after be corrected multiple times. She has given legal advice multiple times and then taken back what she has said. My son is troubled and I’m just looking for help to get some more time with him; but when I explain this to Marie, she says “you need to treat your son like a drunk on the floor and walk over him”. I can’t explain to how much of a mistake it was to hire Marie. She has brought nothing but pain, confusion, and financial heart ache to my family. After the last court hearing, I lost all of my physical custody of my son, and am now paying over 700$ a month in child support. I used to have my son every other weekend from Friday to Monday, and exra weekdays in the summer. That is all gone now, thanks to the poor legal advice of Marie walker

Attorney Robert Andretz represented me during a challenging time when my ex-husband filed a false accusation against my medical license. Unfortunately, my experience with him was disappointing. Despite charging me for his services on an hourly basis, he provided minimal assistance, often repeating information without taking meaningful action. Towards the end of our engagement, he requested an additional $5,000 retainer to proceed to trial, despite already holding a substantial retainer from me. As a non-legal professional, I trusted his guidance and ended up signing a consent order without fully understanding my options, which ultimately led to severe consequences including job loss, license suspension, and unemployment. Upon conducting my own research, I discovered that I may not have been rightfully charged in the first place due to my credentials in controlled substance abuse and relevant licenses. It's clear that Mr. Andretz’s lack of proactive representation and failure to adequately inform me of my rights had detrimental effects on my career and livelihood. As Dr. Shara Brown, I strongly advise others to seek legal counsel elsewhere for more competent and transparent assistance.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
