I needed to find an attorney, for my daughter, in Texas and Mr.Quiles was recommended by a very good attorney with whom he had associated in Florida. Thus far, Mr. Quiles has been more than informative, extremely helpful and I believe, using his knowledge and expertise this case will prevail in a court of law. Knowing many attorneys in Florida , it is seldom that one is willing to recommend. My daughter is very pleased and I have full faith & confidence in him.

As we entered our twelfth year as a co-defendent in a lawsuit between four well-known Texas cities, I called Mr. Walker, based upon my previous experience with him, for assistance. In less than ONE year, Mr. Walker was able to professionally, calmly and quickly resolve the litigation to all parties satisfaction to where all four cities have reconstituted their business relationship and have remained friends. Mr. Walker is the consummate professional and has the ability to explain complex legal issues to the layman. I have directly observed him in his communications with Boards of Directors, judges, Board of Trustees and a City Council. Mr. Walker has a "commanding presence" when he is speaking and providing guidance to his client, judge and jury.

We hired Jose portela to file lawsuit of massive fraud againt a fradulent enterprise in Dallas area engaged in looting millions of dollars from unsuspecting investors. We were looking for good hearted lawyers with iron fists. Jose got titaniums. The opponents had close to six to ten attorneys, some with so much experience their dentures would shake, but here is this young guy Jose with the zeal and lawyerly skills so effective that each and every motion we filed was accepted including contempt and sanctions against the defendant and their high octane zero power lawyer who basically kneeled to settle on our terms. This is a truly gentmany lawyer with tiger claws.

Jack Jamison acted as an expert witness on legal issues in a very complex matter for my company. The company attorney, a long time attorney, honors graduate of one of the top law schools in the nation and former partner at a major, world wide law firm, had never met Mr. Jamison before Jamison was recommended by another attorney. My attorney stated that Jack Jamison was one of the most knowledgeable attorneys he had ever met, grasped the issues unbelievably well, and gave advice that led to the fantastic result my company had in the case. He was quick with his response to complex questions and knew the law, facts of the case, issues, and recommended strategy in the case like no other attorney he had ever met. Based upon my experiences with Jack Jamison in my company's case, he is one of the top attorneys in Dallas and the state and should have nothing less than a 10 rating.

I hired Tiffany and Kevin to represent me in a sexual assault case accusation in Austin, TX that put my life on hold, with the risk of destroying everything I had worked so hard for. Tiffany was the lead counsel for this case. During the pretrial phase, they kept me informed and worked with me to look at every angle of this case to try to get a positive outcome to my case. They were committed to my case and knew my case better than I would have expect them to. I was surprised during the trial, my lawyers knew the case, facts, inconsistencies, the witnesses better than anyone in that courtroom. One could tell Tiffany and Kevin had been studying this case and were prepared to win. They did not leave anything for chances. Unfortunately, even though as time went by and the DA learned more about the case and it became more clear the accuser was lying, he was not willing to drop the charges. Kevin and Tiffany did everything they could with multiple trips to Austin, but no offer was acceptable to me. It was the most scary time of my life. I was facing up to 40 years, which meant I could lose everything in my life. I listened to their recommendations and put my life on their hands, taking my case to trial. While I was still in college in 2015, a handful of classmates and I went to a bar, and when the night was over one classmate and I went to my apartment. At the time we were both in other relationships and didn't want anyone to know about the situation. After the affair in my apartment, I took her to her boyfriend's apartment and went on to sleep. Everything seemed normal. A few days later I heard from others that she had been making up stories, but I didn't know exactly what and did not worry much since I had not done anything legally wrong. Fast-forward 2 years and I got arrested over whatever false accusation she had made. Her story had things that did not make sense, but that did not make the investigators stop and question her. Her statement strictly made me face these charges. If I ever was to be asked about a great lawyer that is going to work hard to win a case and knows the law, I will undoubtedly recommend Tiffany and Kevin. They know what they are doing and I can say that they will work hard to win a case, not leaving room for a surprise. Even my family was amazed at the way they were prepared in the courtroom and how much knowledge they had to defend my case. They really went the extra mile to win and DID.

He believes in winning and he does. He did an excellent job of defending me in a frivolous lawsuit brought against me by an HOA in Parker County District Court and I wish he still lived here so I could avail myself of his services again. He also defended a neighbor against the same Hoa and literally skinned them, and made it look easy. I would highly recommend him if you want a favorable outcome.

At the recommendation of a longtime friend and trusted attorney, we retained the services of Aubry Talkington in Denton. Within a brief period of time, she was able to resolve a damage claim which had proven impossible to settle in the months prior. The result was much better than we had anticipated, and the legal fees were exceptionally reasonable. There are times when there is no substitute for expert and professional legal assistance. We could not have asked for a better representation. I would highly recommend the firm of Springer & Lyle, and especially attorney Aubry Talkington. Having a team like this is very reassuring, and a wise choice.

I was terminated from my position abruptly and my company owed me over $30,000 in commissions that had not been paid out. I have never worked with a lawyer and I have to admit I was weary of everyone I spoke to. I reached out to multiple employment lawyers around the state and Mary was the clear choice. Mary took the time to talk to me about my case specifically and answered my questions on the initial phone call. It was clear that Mary was very knowledgeable about Texas labor and employment law. Her rates seemed very fair and aligned with the market. I was happy to sign an agreement to work with Mary. Upon reviewing my employee agreement she noticed that all litigation was to be held in the state of IL. Mary could have moved forward and I would have never thought anything about it, but that is not what she did. Although she had already had multiple conversations with me and reviewed my documents she advised me to get a lawyer in IL to avoid higher cost overall. I was not charged anything for her time. Her honesty was greatly appreciated as money was a high priority being unemployed. I would turn to Mary for any employment or labor issues in the state of TX. Highly recommend everyone to give her a call!

I hired Bryan Garner and his team of five lawyers to work on an appellate brief for my client. His reputation as a top-notch writer is unquestionable, and I was interested to see it in practice. Blown away is all I can really say. His description of editorial consulting doesn't do it justice. It wasn't an "editing job" so much as a complete rewrite of the brief. Despite my initial skepticism during the process, the final production was impeccable--no-spin but persuasive, and above all winning. You've never experienced anything as intense as a round of serial editing in Garner's office. It is humbling but indisputably enlightening. It was a learning experience that I've put into practice in my group. We've made it a practice of reviewing some of Garner's edits on the brief we hired him on to use in our later work, hoping the genius will rub off on us. And squeezing out every last drop of goodness from that appellate masterpiece. This is one satisfied client, and I am eager to work with him again if I get a case that would interest him. The legal gods willing.

I can say that he was very responsive to my inquiries regarding my son. He is taking the best course of action in my opinion with my sons best interest in mind, and his sound judgement is very reassuring because sometimes even when we know what is best, we often wish and chose the exact opposite. Having him as my sons attorney is a comfort because the last attorney got my son what he wanted, but I don't believe it was what he needed or that it was in his better interest because if it was he would not be where he is again. I recommend him for his honest appraisal and his legal wisdom.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
