Elisabeth’s intelligence, steady approach, and passion for her work made her an unbelievable asset and support during my divorce process. Her balanced viewpoint and researched approach kept things in perspective during turbulent times, eventually guiding us to an equitable settlement, which would not have been accomplished without her diligence. I cannot overemphasize how highly I recommend her.

We highly recommend Attorney Andrew Adams. We recently took over the company and Andrew helped us navagite the restructuring. He was always three steps ahead, responded quickly and eased our minds about everything. What stuck out the most, was how personally invested he was about helping the company's transition.

Sharon is Top Notch! she knows her stuff! particularly real estate-easement issues. She helped us with a neighbor trespass issue. This neighbor had an easement-but not an easement to park! She made what could have been a complicated case-simple to understand. We felt very good in retaining her and had confidence in her knowledge. Definetly would recommend her and would use her again. Her credentials are impressive and pric is fair. Quick-to the point-doesn't waste time. She remembers her clients and cares for them.

Ms. Pravda represented Shareholder.com during various acquisition negotiations starting in early 2005 through our acquisition by The Nasdaq Stock Market in January, 2006. She did an excellent job representing Shareholder.com during negotiations with much larger and highly-experienced potential acquirers. In particular, Ms. Pravda negotiated a very attractive acquisition of Shareholder.com by Nasdaq relative to valuation and general terms and conditions. To her credit, over two years later I believe both Nasdaq and Shareholder.com's shareholders, clients and employees are very satisfied with the acquisition. I intend to use Ms. Pravda in all my future M&A activities and can recommend her without reservation.

Stephen ticks all the boxes of what a lawyer should be. He will let you know if the best fit is elsewhere and will explain the particulars. I contacted Stephen's law firm because of a commercial dispute, which was with a resident of a different state. Stephen went over my documentation and told me that it is probably a better option for me to proceed with the attorneys from that state. He was also very sympathetic to my plight, and even tried to help find lawyers in that state for me. Stephen will definitely be my first choice when I need a Massachusetts attorney.

I had a problem with one of my tenets who refused to pay his monthly rent and did not have a legitimate reason to stop. Jared helped me review my options and advise me on what i should and should not do. And in the end we went to court and in my opinion he did a great job and won the case. I highly recommend Jared he's a hard working and honest attorney.

I did a real estate transaction with this lawyer and he was just wonderful! He was super considerate, helpful, thoughtful and went out of his way to make things easier for me and my Family. I would recommend him for anything. He is just a stand-up person who is intelligent and wise way beyond his years. He is not out to make money of off People at their expense but rather sees the long term picture and values quality of Life for everyone involved. He is patient and diligent and a pleasure to work with. Highly, highly recommended by me and my entire Family.

Atty. Shope is a superb and very honest trustworthy lawyer. He gives excellent advice and an overview about whether & what to pursue. Atty. Shope works together with other attorneys at Foley Hoag, one of the very best law firms in Boston, when any specialized expertise is needed. Fees are commensurate with the quality of service, i.e expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Attorney Mason represented me recently in a unemployment appeal hearing. I found her to be knowledgeable, professional, conscientious, and extremely intelligent. Elizabeth spent considerable time in becoming familiar with all aspects of my situation and developed a strategy that showed her experience with the priorities of the board which would decide my case. She prepared me well for the hearing, discussing at length the types of questions that might be raised and my potential responses. She showed considerable skill during the hearing, asking questions and eliciting answers that best supported our case. I interviewed three attorneys before selecting Ms Mason, and I also considered trying to represent myself. In retrospect, I believe that selecting Atty Mason gave me the best chance at winning my case, which in fact I ultimately did. Her fee was fair, and she worked diligently in my behalf. If you are looking for an attorney in Ms Mason's field, I recommend her without reservation.

I have used this firm for several very different legal jobs, starting in 2006. Each of these jobs has required some basic research in court documents located in different jurisdictions, and then pulling that information together in a research memo to inform investment decisions. The office was same-day responsive to queries, kept me posted about the progress of the investigations, and the final reports were clearly written and useful.

My husband hired Carolyn Latti for a serious injury that he sustained while working on a commercial fishing vessel. She was awesome! Her communication was great. She explained every step on the way. And best of all, she was successful in getting my husband the compensation that he deserved! She fought for him, and for this we will forever be grateful to her. Aside from all of this, she is just an absolute joy to work with. We miss her, and still check on her from time to time. She became not only our attorney, but our friend. If you are on the fence with hiring her, do not wait another second. The insurance companies will NOT give you what you deserve. She will get the job done, and is more than fair with her fee for the hard work that she puts in. Thanks a million times, Carolyn!

It was a pure pleasure working with Jay Gregory on the case of the harassment that our ex-employee brought against our small company in the court of MA. Not only the judge dismissed the case with the help of Jay Gregory, but actually ordered a harassment oder against the former employee and his wife as well. Jay Gregory is very trustful, easy to work with, and we would highly recommend him.

I am doing a Pro se case of posthumous paternity; my father being Earl Warren, once the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. I have tried many lawyers and all kinds of internet trying to get representation with no avail. Mr. Le Ray wrote an excellent Law Review that I can use to present my case to district court. The article is very detailed which I need to fight this battle in court. I have limited income so I have to do this myself.

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
