I’ve been practicing law for approximately 34 years. It has always been important to me to bring distinctive value, imagination, and quality work to my clients. I have represented as a corporate attorney and advised executives of major Fortune 500 corporations, hospital systems, large Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive suppliers, and a variety of middle market companies. I have also represented numerous small businesses that include non-profit organizations, minority owned businesses and women owned businesses. I have served as a special master and expert witness in mediating disputes over supplier diversity business transactions. This experience makes me a subject matter expert in supplier diversity. Over the last 15 years, I have managed a law firm dedicated to advancing the cause of creating wealth through the development of minority owned and women owned businesses. In that connection, I have become recognized as a respected strategist and advocate for minority owned and women owned businesses. In this capacity, I have assisted more than a hundred minority owned and women owned businesses to become certified by affiliate councils of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (the “NMSDC”) and the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council all over the country. I was disappointed to see that one of my former clients failed to receive their certification. During the past fifteen years, to my knowledge, I have never failed to follow through and achieve certification for any of my clients. From time to time, questions arise that delay certification. Never, however, have I experienced an outright rejection, because we normally can resolve the concerns of the certifying entity. In this case, it appears that my client decided to handle the concerns of certification on their own. Consequently, I could not be held responsible for a negative result. Leamon Sowell, Esq.

We asked Leamon to help re-draft a Shareholder's agreement that would represent our practice and (most importantly) help us certify as a Women's Owned Business (WBE). He claims to specialize in this area and came recommended to us. We are a company 100% owned by a woman, but were denied certification because of the shareholder agreement that he produced. We wasted the legal fees on him, lost the application fees, must wait 6 months and will re-apply without his help later this year. Do not use him. He was more interested in selling us on future consulting work than helping us with our immediate issue. His timelines and responsiveness was also a major concern.

Michael Rock was hired to do a Probate case for me. I know it can take a long time, but this took approximately 18 months. In the end I found out he never filed with Wayne County, there is no record of Case Access of him in Wayne County, and the Creditor I settled with never went through Wayne County Courts. This is not a good person to work with. His communication is very poor. He continually moves goal posts to make it feel like progress. And in the end takes payment for services NOT rendered. Eventually I had to do the whole thing myself. Michael Rock is not trustworthy and hopefully other people in the middle of their "case" right now are reading this and can just fire this "lawyer."

I reached out to this attorney because I was experiencing issues with my landlords. Mr. Rock contacted right away, and reviewed my documents and addressed the concerns in relation to the laws and my lease agreement. He explained what I was legally entitled to do, as well as the consequences of those decisions. Its good to know what your rights are, but its better to know how the course of action may impact you, as well. I feel like a burden was taken off me speaking with him because I was told by my landlord what i better or better not do - it was scary for me. I will certainly turn to him if there are other concerns, as well as refer him to others. He did not rush my time and was very polite and considerate.

I not only recommend attorney Thomas Lavigne, but I guarantee once you retain him, you too will look no further. He is empathetic, timely, knowledgable, and very trustworthy. There is no other attorney that will work as hard for you. I used Thomas Lavigne to help me start up a business and to follow through with compliance. I couldn't be any happier. I highly recommend his services.

Mr. Lavigne is not a two, three, or four-star attorney, he is a 5-STAR fantastic attorney! I had the beginnings of a controversy around some complex U.S. Federal laws. Mr. Lavigne researched laws on my behalf, found supporting regulations, and then “educated” the government’s own attorneys. They backed down, saw it his way, and we prevailed. Since then, I have had him represent me in several legal matters over the years, ranging from personal to complex business matters, and he is excellent. After hiring many attorneys, I found these keys lead me to the best ones. They should… 1. Have compassion, empathy, and shun arrogance 2. Have patience to listen actively, and understand my viewpoint 3. Help me understand, so that I can contribute in decisions that will affect my life 4. Stand up for my individual liberties and freedoms, to preserve them 5. Be creative in legal research, to uncover exceptional principles 6. Rebuke the opposition, with diplomacy, not just fold or plea to everything 7. Possess superior knowledge, know how to execute and win Mr. Lavigne does all the above, with quality. He inspires confidence. He cares, he listens, he has patience, and to top it off, he proved that his legal research wins results. If you meet him, you will quickly sense his positivity, passion and compassion. He helps people like me, from all walks of life, so they don’t flounder in a legal system increasingly self-important, bloated, and encroaching too far into liberties. He stood up for my rights and raised arguments that the other side was legally unprepared for, so we won. Do the skills above, at times, rankle a few feathers of his legal adversaries? Sure, it’s tough for them to be made to backpedal. I saw his staunch defense of a principle upon which the other side wanted us silent, because it helped my case, not theirs. If Mr. Lavigne caved, it would have been easier for all, except me! He did not. Let’s be honest, if your side is forthright when the other players want to coast, expecting to skate by a low-energy mediocre defense, they may be perturbed. I think the opposition is a tad on edge when a creative intellect like Mr. Lavigne enters the courtroom. I wouldn’t want it any other way! Finally, I note that other lawyers I hired rush through, while he has always extended to me the courtesy and respect to answer my questions and educate me, he considers my input…it’s my life! Mr. Lavigne is someone about whom I can honestly say makes me realize that a lawyer can be a source of good. I would sleep most comfortably with him as my advocate, on any case of mine. I would never choose another attorney if Thomas Lavigne was available!

I could go on and on about how disappointing Mr. Lavigne was as a lawyer. The canabis council really talked him up on the phone, once he had my check he put very little effort into my case. Showed up two and a half hours late to my hearing, it appeared he was stoned. At my sentencing he continued to argue with the judge after I had already been sentenced to two years of probation. All this arguing did was cause the judge to get up out of his seat and yell at him, followed by giving me an extra 90 day jail sentence because he was so upset. I've tried calling the canabis concil numerous times over the past few months, I've called his cell phone and he never answers. I've been trying to get a refund because from the very start he said "I'll get this case dropped, no problem." I've also tried left messages for the main lawyer for cannabis concil numerous times, with no returned call. I ended up contacting another lawyer when I was realsed from jail, he informed me that everyone considers the cannabis concil a complete joke and that I would have been better off getting a public defender. I hope this helps some of you out there, I wish I would have know about this website when I was looking for a lawyer. Whatever you do, don't waste your money on any of these clowns in cheap suits. Considering that no one will return my calls, I plan on filling a complaint with the Attorney Grievence Commission of Michigan.

Please do not waste your time dealing with these terrible lawyers who handle cases terribly, they double dip in charges and are just all around horrible horrible people. Me and my mom were hit by a semi truck by a well know produce company. They couldn’t get me loss wages. They double dip in charges. They switch lawyers without letting anybody know. I wouldn’t recommend this law firm to my worst enemy. I wish I would’ve just stayed with Mike Morse. I am so sad and upset. I wasted two years of my life with this law firm. I would’ve had a better chance representing myself. Exhaust all options before coming here.

Once the new attorney was assigned his Assistant was rude, spoke disrespectfully against my deceased husband and hung up on me. Didnt even attempt to help and charged fees towards his insurance policy payout...and still has the rude Assistant still employed there...Save yourself the guilt and avoid this firm.

I called this Office looking for help not looking for an enemy. I come to find that the paralegal NANCY I discussed my pending case with proceeded to hang up the call from me and call the person that I was seeking legal advice about and then proceeds to tell him exactly what I had just relayed to the paralegal. They were Obviously good friends because she informed me she called the person I was seeking legal advise about while he was on vacation. NANCY then proceeded to tell me all the lies that he had already told me previously, ASTONISHING. I have never been more distraught or afraid since this paralegal NANCY has made that phone call and relinquished all information to this person. The paralegal NANCY then proceeds to inform me what I should do and how I should proceed with this case. Which is to do NOTHING and talk to this horrible, lying deceiving person and work things out. HOW HORRIBLE WHEN YOU LOOK FOR HELP THAT YOU GET DECEIVING, HORRIBLE PEOPLE THAT ARE WOLVES IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING. LIKE THIS FIRM HAS JUST PROVEN. THANK YOU NANCY FOR ALL YOUR HELP🤔

Back in 1998 I ended up in the hospital in a coma. While I was in a coma someone at the hospital left that "rubber band" torniquet around my right arm. The torniquet they put around your arm when they draw blood. Made my lose the use of my right hand from never damage caused by leaving the torniquet on my arm over night. Long story short. I ended up with Mr Peters law firm. At first he would tell me I had a solid case. His law firm is not known for taking small fry cases. Mr Peters was not proactive with my case, after 5 years he tells he the neurologist I was seeing was not board certified and his testimony has no bearing. I felt like WTH, why wouldn't you have advised me to see a board certified doctor to begin with? Then settlement conference day he sends an associate attorney who just wanted to settle the case. Permanent lose of my hand, I only grossed $120k, $67 after everyone took their cut! Mr. Peters could have done much better, but I guess I was a small fry.

Communication was horrendous with return call or emails taking over a month. Advice was also terrible and nothing in my case was resolved after a 13k bill. I’m still exactly where I started just with less money. I would have been better off representing myself. Co-counsel couldn’t answer very basic questions and just ignored my questions rather than finding answers. Huge waste of time and money. Overpriced and under delivered.

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
