I was arrested on 3 felonies in TX(I don’t live there) during the height of Covid in 2020. I called a few lawyers but Brock Benjamin took time to listen, then went over how he would defend me. He has roots & lots of experience in El Paso. He did a thorough investigation of the facts and communicated every detail with me. Whenever I was in doubt or scared or confused, I’d call him & he never sent me to voicemail. It took 4 long years from start to end of my case. Bryan Herrera, took over my case about midway through(Brock is a busy guy & state hadn’t picked up my case 2 1/2yrs in!)& he is nothing short of amazing also! Bryan kept me informed & got me thru anxiety attacks, breakdowns & never was mean or frustrated with my endless questions & concerns. In the end, I didn’t go to prison. State dropped 2 felonies & I plead guilty to 1. I got probation and completed all conditions 6 months into probation. I was able to end my probation time 1 1/2 yrs early! They may not be the most inexpensive attorneys, but when you’re faced with felonies that carry sentences up to 99yrs, is bargain shopping really in your best interest? I’m happy my case is resolved and would recommend Brock Benjamin Law office to anyone who needs a lawyer who knows what they’re doing and will fight for you.

After several attempts to resolve and settle my divorce proceedings failed, because my ex was unyielding, Attorney Alejandra Valdez at Luis Yañez office developed an ingenious counter suite that ultimately resulted in a total dismissal of the case. Mrs.Adkins and Mr.Shepard are both very knowledgeable, courtesy and professional at all times. Whenever a situation sprang up or I had a question both were there to answer questions in a timely manner. Divorce can be very complicated and confusing but they made it simple. Mrs.Adkins not only will help you, but as well tell you how it is, and is very straightforward with you. She is very humble, and kind during a difficult and confusing time. I advise everyone to put your trust in her and her team as well LISTEN to what she has to tell you because she really knows what’s best. Put your ego aside because she WILL help. Thank you ma’am for the hard work and dedication!

A couple years ago when I was 19 years old I was in an abusive marriage. He beat me in front of my children and that was the last straw. I called this women for help, told her I had no idea what I was doing, that I was young and was being abused. She started yelling at me going off saying I was scamming her and asking for free services. I broke down crying, I felt so alone and defeated. I in no way was looking for “free services” i was young, confused, distraught, and trying to find someone who could help me figure out the process of divorce. She made me feel so awful and alone, I almost stayed in an abusive marriage solely because of this woman. I doubt she remembers me but I sure remember her and now that I am almost 30 I see even more how absolutely vile what she did and said was. I was a child being beaten and when I reached out to her for help all she did was yell at me and belittle me. Ms “Adkins”, I whole heartedly hope you are ashamed of yourself, you definitely should be also- do not respond to my post with some ignorant excuse like you respond to everyone else with a negative review. as far as i can see, every negative review is more or less about the same thing, you being rude, insensitive, and responding to people with a unnecessary and unprofessional attitude. i don’t see that all being a coincidence. on top of that every response to their reviews is you coming up with some excuse and trying to turn things around to make it seem like they just don’t wanna hear the truth. here’s a tip, you can tell the truth and not be an as*hole to people going through one of the hardest times of their lives. you in no way shape or form care about any of these people, all you care about is your paycheck and that is beyond shameful and honestly disgusting. you do not deserve to be in this profession

Mr. Morales was a court appointed attorney for me. When I requested a bench trial, I revealed to him that I have mental disabilities and at high risk for suicide. He told me not to tell him about it, but to seek professional help. I was arrested for a minor offense that has destroyed my ability to work in my chosen profession. He failed to link what my mental disability was like at the time of the charged conduct, and how this limited my reasoning and judgment. He didn't stress to the judge the certainty and severity of my impairment at the time of the incident, in an effort to pursuade the judge to acquit, dismiss or reduce the charge, so that I didn't lose my ability to support myself and retire from my career.

Ruben morales was a great attorney he's been representing my family and I for the past 10 years and in all our cases he has been fully in to the case and kept us completely informed of our cases he settled my cases very well and really helped me in a time of frustration! If you want good representation I highly recommend him !! He did not promise anything and kept my whole case confidential! The only thing he promised is to fully be on my case and give me any possible options and advised me of what was best for my case.

I have known and done business with Mick for over 15 years and have been very pleased with his services. I have used Mick for numerous contract negotiations and have always been very impressed with his keen intellect, calm demeanor and overall negotiating skills. Unlike another reviewer on this site who seems to have an axe to grind, I've never had an issue with Mick's billed hours or billing rate. Having also had some occasion to use some major law firms from New York, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, I found Mick's billing rate to be about half that of the major firms while his skills were equal to or better than what I saw from the other guys.

Client Beware! This is an attorney you have to watch closely. He is a chronic overbiller. Many of his charges stem from his desire to cover himself. Mick has overinflated sense of his own intelligence. He is always the smartest guy in the room, on any subject. In a very real sense, he considers you, the client, as an adversary, at least as much as the other party. This is what drives him. Be careful, and be afraid.

We've had an issue with a neighbor and I hired Mr. Darnell for a letter stating we had rights to access a community area - it's been about 2 years and I kept asking, "can I have a letter?", he wanted me to sue the neighbor which would be additional fees, attorney fees etc.. I can't afford that and just needed to show legal rights to access the area. I finally gave up and fired him - and then he sent me a letter back dated to October 2022. Why not just do what I asked in the first place? This isn't right. And then he said he'd refund my money, and now it's been a month and no refund, no replies... not dependable in my personal opinion.

I had a criminal case pending and hired Eric Darnell in December 2016. He never gave me or my mother any paperwork for hiring him and what it would cost. He was paid $5000 and did not do anything other than show up in court in April 2017. He would not return my phone calls nor address questions that I had. He asked for a statement of events from me which I provided him four days after he was hired. When we met him for the first time on April 20 in court, he stated that I didn't give him exactly what he asked for as far as my statement. He had over 3 1/2 months to tell me this, yet he brings this to my attention 30 minutes before court. He was extremely rude to me when I met him and to my family. Nothing happened other than the court date being pushed back for another two months, yet by the time we got home seven hours later, he had already sent another email asking for even more money. Not a single thing had he done for us other than show up in court. I dropped him as my attorney and had to hire an attorney that was more knowledgeable and professional. When he was given notification that he was no longer my attorney, he refused to answer phone calls from my new attorneys office and when my attorney ran into him in the courthouse elevator Eric Darnell had very unprofessional words with him. Needless to say, it was shocking that a "professional" would act like this.

I hired Eric Darnell - Attorney For a criminal case. When asked if he handled criminal cases he said that he did…he does not and we were not familiar with finding the correct type of attorney at that time. Extremely hard to get a hold of and would not return phone calls. Kept asking for more money and hadn't done a single thing. He did not answer specific questions that were asked regarding the case. Dodged every question asked. Did not tell the truth regarding his filings and stated in emails that he had filed certain motions, which in fact he did not do. We ended up hiring a much more professional attorney that answered every email or phone call. I would never recommend Eric Darnell - to ANYBODY.

I hired this law firm for my husbend for him to be released for a detainer in 2011. I had called probably 10 lawyer's and they had all denied to take my husbend case. Finally I went down the list of attorneys that were closer to where he was and I called this law firm. I do a free consultation and they told me that he could get out and we'll just listening to them I said forget it and I hired them without taking in the fact of what everyone else said and 1 month later at my husbend court date. Boom he was out. I am sooo thankful I found this firm. Thank you Mr. Ray and Mrs. Patricia..

Did my paperwork incorrectly and attempted to charge me for the correction. He filed with the court an order appointing my son as his own father and changing his name to the wrong name. Then when I asked him to change it quoted me $2k. His secretary yelled at me for questioning that charge. Is that ethical or legal? Get it right with a better lawyer who can read and spell.

Unethical. He made an error on a court order. It states that my son is his own father. When I asked to help change it and even offered to pay the court filing, he requires his retainer. $2500. I wonder if this is a business. Make an error and funnel more money from people? Good idea in theory but save your money and find someone to do it correctly the first time.

I completely agree with the previous review. The only time that Mrs Sipes seemed to be engaged and listening to me was during the initial consultation. During the consultation she put me at ease with all her advice and recommendations on how she was going to come after my ex wife. This feeling was short lived. Three months after paying my retainer nothing had been done on my case, I found this out when I called to get a status on my case. Six month went by and nothing much had changed with my case. At this time I took it upon myself to try to work something out with my ex wife in regards to custody with my kids and we came to an agreement. Even after I did all the work for her it still took her 6 months to draw up the paperwork and have it signed by the judge. Her paralegal Robert seems to incompetent, every time he emailed me the child custody order it had the same errors I had just corrected in the previous draft. This went on for a couple of months until I refused to deal with him anymore and only worked with Mrs Sipes son after that. Worst experience ever, would never recommend her to anyone.

Attorneys are hard to judge on the basis of just a single consultation. One the first visit, most of them seem amazing -- energetic -- optimistic -- motivated. I was referred to Doris Sipes by another attorney and I found her to be intelligent, soft-spoken, confident and reserved. At the consultation, we discussed the details of my case and I tried to listen as much as I talked. It seemed to me that we had similar expectations regarding the outcome of my case. I had heard that Ms. Sipes has a reputation for being a tough attorney and I interpreted the low-energy consultation to be a sign that she was being forthright and honest with me. What a relief to be dealt with in such a respectful way. What a relief to have avoided the typical over-promised sales pitch that I've experienced with other attorneys -- or so I thought. As the case progressed, I found it hard to get Ms. Sipes attention in any meaningful way. My case wasn't rocket-science but I had some important details that needed to be considered. The question of how to present the relevant details to the court in a way that would make sense was an important issue for me. How do we present a defense for a convoluted case in a way that the court will understand? How do we win? My attempts to get Ms. Sipes to discuss the nuts and bolts of my case only seemed to make her annoyed. She wouldn't discuss strategy with me and didn't ask me for any evidence to support my defense. All of the evidence presented in court was the evidence that I rushed to have her review in the minutes before the trial. I even asked her to call one witness in my defense and it seems like my request was ignored without the benefit of thoughtful consideration. Doris seems to be intelligent, articulate and capable. Maybe all of her best effort goes to bigger, better clients -- I don't know. The irony is this: The low-key consultation that made me think that Ms. Sipes was the right choice for my case was more like an over-promised sales pitch because that's the only time she engaged me regarding the details of my case. I'm very disappointed because I lost my case and I wonder how the results would have been different if Ms. Sipes had worked closer with me to present a better defense.

Mr. Nevarrez was hired by me to represent the estate of my mother, in november of 2017. He had me file a civil suit in texas on property she owned as well as change the probate from new mexico to texas. Countless emails and phone calls were made to both Mr. Nevarrez and his paralegal. These calls were unreturned and emails unaswered. The only time it seems I was able to get a hold of him was when I needed to pay him money. We went to court in June of 2018 where he could not even remember the case or the people involved when he got before the 3rd judicial court. the judge was so angry at our unpreparedness that he put a $500,000.00 bond on me as executor and would not honor the civil suit or texas probate change because he said Nevarrez should have known that my mother died in new mexico therefore everything would have to be handled in new mexico. When he filed the civil suit he gave the respondents 30 days to respond , they did not, and called him repeatedly to see what the next step was , he would not return my calls. The last step was when he did not produce the judges orders. I was forced to fire him and hire another attorney.I have asked for my records back since July 29th. I have also asked for a return of at least half of the $11000.00 I paid him , to no avail.

I understand that she is using her mother's coat tail to establish her clients, but I was very disappointed that I could not get thru past the receptionist. I paid the consultation fee, only to find out what I already knew. Fees are extremely expensive. Comparing this to a really good pair of leather shoes. You know they are good, and will last a long time, but then you see the same pair with a label and you end up paying five times more. If you have the money upfront they will talk to you, but you might be stuck with a pair of over priced leather shoes that pinch more than just your pocket. I was ready to hire the team, but I could not talk to anybody without money. I wanted to pay another $1000, and even then I couldn't speak to anybody. I knew that I wasn't going to be guaranteed a win win case, but I needed answers to some of my painful needs. My desperate actions led me to a different attorney who did answer all my questions. I lost my $250.00 consulting fee.

My experience with this attorney was nothing short of a nightmare. This was the second attorney assigned to me from the ambulance chasing Alex Hernandez law firm and he did nothing but lie and ghost, just as the first attorney assigned to me, Rene Zarazua did. Memorize these names and do not use them. Unless you want to just give them your hard earned money and have them do nothing but lie and ghost you. David Leffman was assigned to me after Rene Zarazua lied and ghosted me. I received a fake apology for my experience with Rene and was assigned David Leffman. The first thing he did was lie and say, “I get things done, I will have answers for you within 24 - 48 hours.” That was back in December. I had to write the firm and accuse them if handing me another do nothing ghosting attorney, to which he rapidly called me and lied saying that he had sent me an email with a demand letter. I said, no I received nothing. I am ready to have my computer forensically studied to prove that he is a liar, as I believe he never sent me a letter. So he said, I will resend it and change the supposed dates. Then another month goes by after this supposed letter was sent, to which I send him another email and ask if he has heard anything back from this supposed letter he had claimed to send a month earlier. Nothing but crickets, so I email him, and CC’d Alex Hernandez, and another attorney that had told me earlier, apologetically that my case was being escalated, Dale Slade (Don’t use this liar, Dale Slade either) to inquire why the ghosting again, only to find Alex Hernandez has blocked me, but Dale Slade and David Leffman got my emails, but chose to ghost me. This was not a terribly difficult case, could’ve been solved with a simple letter, but this firm is excellent at taking your money and disappearing and becoming impossible to reach by phone or email. They have a great PR firm that answers the phone sympathetically, but that is all they are as the attorney’s will never get back to you. Even when they say they have marked the message URGENT. I am reporting the Alex Hernandez firm, mr Zarazua and mr Leffman to the Texas bar association as well as the IRS, there is major misappropriations of funds here going on here. And judging by the yelp reviews where they have a generous 1 star rating, this is their MO, take your money, lie and ghost you. I want my money back from this attorney and the do nothing firm. Maybe it’s time for a class action law suit? At any rate, save your money, and don’t use them. The only time they do anything aggressively is relentlessly pursue you for your business, then lie and ghost you.

I hired Mr. Brown for a modification/enforcement case and had him on my case for ~2 yrs. The father in my case had been repeatedly and continuously breaking the court order and not allowing possession time with our son because he either 'forgot' or 'wanted to sleep in' or blah blah blah. During what was supposed to be a 2 day trial, Mr. Brown pressured me to settle and agree to terms that I was not comfortable with. He neglected to bring up very important evidence in my case that was submitted to the court during a discovery process (evidence that was against the opposing party) and seemed very disorganized during the trial fumbling through papers, taking very long periods of pause and appearing as if he had no clue what he was going to say next. In my opinion, he knew exactly what he was doing since he had 2 yrs to get to know my case and we prepared for the trial the entire weekend prior. There was submitted evidence of a car accident with my ~6 y/o child and his father on a holiday weekend night at ~1AM where he ran over the median onto incoming traffic lane and hit a boulder and his car was totaled-evidence that questioned possible drunk driving with our child. I was not notified of this car accident and father refused to allow medical treatment of our child despite paramedics advising him to and it was notated on the police report. Mr. Brown did not bring this incident to the attention of the judge and quickly changed the subject during questioning. I became highly suspicious of Mr. Brown's motives. In my opinion, he was not working for me. Mr. Brown also negatively impacted my case as he ignored my numerous emails re: my request for a motion for new trial and I was allowed a certain number of days before my case would not be able to be heard anymore. Well guess what? Mr. Brown waited until <1 week left for the deadline to end and he left me with no time to find other counsel and thus my case was no longer able to be heard in the court. Know why this happened? Because all the evidence submitted against opposing party would no longer be able to be brought up in subsequent motions/trials. The intent was to 'erase history' and erase the violations that the opposing party had committed. Mr. Brown's actions are unethical and immoral. I cannot possibly express my utmost disappointment in this attorney. So many red flags! In my opinion, he has also enabled an abuser to continue with the repetetive abusive and alienating tendencies. And who suffers? My innocent child.

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
