Tom has been a huge help to our family. We've had 3 other firms review our situation and were unable to help us. Tom met with us, reviewed our case, and immediately found several key details the others missed. We haven't completed the process yet, but we have a very strong case due to the thorough investigation Tom and his firm did. We have high hopes of getting this resolved and I highly recommend Tom and his firm.

Among 7 lawyers I worked with so far, Tom is the best. Very clear process, very fast reactions, very proficient explanations of legal matters to me as non-lawyer, effective interaction via email, all in all a 5-star performance in every respect. Most importantly, we won with our matter against the counter party!

Frank has helped me with multiple patents that have been successfully issued. It is a very long process and takes quite a bit of work and follow through. Frank is great about following up and staying on top of things. Without Frank's persistence and dedication, I would not have finished proving content for the patent. Frank becomes your partner rather than your attorney. Your project and passion become Frank's; making it easy, enjoyable and effective to work with him.

Frank has supported multiple aspects of AEI's legal business needs; from rep contracts to foreign patent filings. We find him to be an expert in defining the direction of the recommended course of action to be taken and complete in minimizing the risk to company operations. Equally important is the network of legal resources he utilizes during his due diligence. If there is an aspect outside of his wheelhouse, he will reach out for support and research the best opinion or solution to the issue. He is our trusted legal partner and we highly recommend his services.

I don't write reviews often, but I must make an exception here. A few years ago Joe rescued me from a potentially devastating situation that a pair of high-priced local attorneys got me into; he took personal ownership of my case after it was essentially abandoned and kicked to the curb by them. His legal advice was stainless, he was honest, and I came away deeply impressed with him both professionally and personally.

My wife and I utilized Plachta, Murphy & Associates, P.C. when we decided to fulfill our dream of owning our own business. After researching local law firms we contacted Business Law Attorney Bryan Reeder. Bryan was extremely friendly, professional, and answered all of our questions. He even returned all of our phone calls promptly—which we really appreciate in an attorney.ck W. Bryan explained our options when deciding which form of business ownership would be best suited for us. We were astonished by his guidance with forming our LLC with such relative ease! He helped us register our business name, guided us through our proper paperwork, negotiate and execute an operating agreement, helped determine our tax obligations, and much more. We really liked the way Bryan was patient in explaining everything and how helpful he was. He even gave us some resources to help our business be as successful as possible! We would highly recommend Bryan for anyone considering starting their own business. His expertise and professionalism was second to none.

Pete handled our case involving a local builder and architect who misrepresented himself, intentionally substituted structural materials, did not pay vendors, and was clearly over his head. Pete was always upfront about potential outcomes, cost, and was very clear as to what the "eye on the prize" meant. He was aggressive and pragmatic. He didn't hesitate to consult other attorneys in his firm to make sure all options were on the table. Pete is investigative, fair, and honest. He is an excellent attorney who knows his way around the Ottawa, Allegan, and Kent Co. court systems. We appreciated his expertise and the way he took a personal and professional interest in our case. We highly recommend him. If you are building a home, prior to signing any contract, he would be an excellent attorney to look it over. I wish we had done that at the start.

Within the first few minutes of meeting Ian, I realized two things. First, he's one of the good guys. He is compassionate, cares about people and doesn't carry that air some attorneys tend to have. But, more importantly for this situation, I knew I wanted him on my side when it came to my court case. His sage, percipient advice and keen, confident strategy routinely put the other side off balance and gave me an advantage in negotiating a complex civil case with multiple defendants. Put simply: Mr. Northon is one of the best attorneys I've met. I learned quickly it's easy to find an attorney to take your case, but it is quite difficult to find someone who will make your case his own. As a client, I want my attorney to be wholly invested in my case. Even at some of the best firms, that doesn't always happen. However, with Ian, he often reminded me about key points in the case I had forgotten or missed. Moreover, my long, arduous case was draining and I needed someone with Ian's personality. After our consultations, I always felt more energized and clear on the way ahead. He has a knack for explaining technical issues in an easy-to-understand way even a layman like I can comprehend. And, even when I asked simple questions, sometimes more than once, he answered without making me feel dense. Remember, he's not only one of the good guys, but the attorney you want in your corner. People skills are nice, but for your case and mine, we need to couple people skills with talented litigation. To that end, Ian Northon is the best choice. From the moment we began, he "owned" my case like it was his...as if he was personally involved. What I mean, beyond what I mentioned above, is Ian tends to buck the adage about attorneys stating "no one will be more invested in your case than you". There were times where I felt Ian was readier than I. He definitely took a personal interest in my case and delivered advice and strategy as if it was his own. His confidence and assertive style kept my case moving and the other side from getting away with some really dirty tricks they tried to pull. I would have been far worse off in my case had I not met Ian. More than that, he was honest. Mr. Northon never gave me false hope or promises that weren't delivered. Further, he is efficient in his case handling. I never felt overcharged. In fact, he was vocal about not wasting my money and pointed out attempts by the other side to increase their billable hours, but at no advantage to their clients. (This point was very important to me because I had just retired from the military and hadn't yet found employment.) In sum, he is an essential asset to his clients and daunting foe to the other side. This attorney-at-law is an example to his colleagues in his integrity, legal knowledge, litigation skills and client relations. He is empathetic and cares about your case, but also well-equipped to be your "secret weapon" in court. If you find yourself needing skilled, honest representation, I wholeheartedly recommend Ian Northon.

Steve has a professional, responsive and direct demeanor. I knew finding the right attorney to assist my husband with leaving his current job to start a competing business would be tough. He was leaving a Multi National Publicly Traded Company with deep pockets and we were going to be a small mom and pop shop. It was also going to be a challenge finding the right counsel because I have over 10 years working in the legal field. My up close and personal knowledge of the legal system had shown me some attorneys say what you want to hear and are great communicators during the consult, but that changes once you actually retain them. I interviewed 10 of Grand Rapids top business attorneys and Andy impressed me the most. He was honest and blunt and gave us best and worst case scenarios. We were David's going up against a Goliath and really wanted to follow the law and start our business the right way. Andy was on point with his guidance from the start. When the day came we were served with a cease and desist from a top Law Firm in Detroit, Andy didn't flinch. He was aggressive, professional and confident in his responses which ultimately led to a victory for us. What impressed us most, even aside from the amazing outcome, was his communication skills and his pricing. If you are looking for a fearless, aggressive, smart, quick thinking, well respected attorney, look no further. We will continue to use Andy in the future and highly recommend him to anyone who wants solid representation.

Quite simply, the best. She helped us through an intensely bad time, emotionally and financially, helped untangle a mess of outdated insurances, and even got a stubborn employer to release the death benefits that they'd been trying to dodge taking care of. What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
