If I could give the Troum law firm more than 5 STARS I would (I’d give them 10 STARS). The team including (Mark and Julie) were empathetic to my specific situation, always made me aware of all options available to me and helped ease all of my apprehension of the unknown. Julie is a God send !!! She is the one who made me feel comfortable to hire the Troum law firm from the beginning. She was patient, thorough, detailed, understanding and always so empathetic to my feelings. In the beginning of my divorce I had no idea what to expect and Julie continued to walk me through it with no hesitation. Now looking back it was the best decision I made to have her and Mark on my team. Mark is the sharpest, smartest and most knowledgeable lawyer. He was always personable , readily available, tactful, patient and his demeanor always put me at ease that I would get through any situation seamlessly. He was so patient in his approach and I never felt rushed or like a number. His years of experience helped in every situation because he was able to anticipate every outcome. If you’re debating on a law firm look no further these are not only team of experts but they treat you like a human being and specifically tailor to your situation. The Troum Law Firm saved me and changed my life for the better and I will be forever grateful to Mark, Julie and team. This team gave me the strength and confidence I needed to tackle my situation head on. Choose them they’re worth every penny I promise.

Terrible service. The "manager" hated that I needed multiple options for dates (I'm sorry I have to work and don't have endless availability). As soon as I was able to pick a date and time where the lawyer and I were available, I booked it however due to an emergency, I asked to be rescheduled after I sort out the emergency. Reschedule, not cancel. You would've thought I insulted her. She then told me to use another attorney because of so much back and forth on the dates among other things. When you have more than 1 person with busy schedules, it comes with the territory that back and forth. Needless to say, I will not be using them for anything at all.

Always have to call 3 or 4 times to be able to talk with him. Need to speak to two people before they will even consider to talk with him. Always "I have other commitments". Takes 2 or 3 emails before he responds. May be good attorney but if you want to business ( in this world were time does matter) he is not the guy to use.

In my initial consultation with Michael Long I explained that I had a dispute with a pool contractor who caused considerable damage to my property while installing a swimming pool and then placed a lien on my property after I refused to pay them in full without an offset for at least part of the damage they caused. Mr Long was upfront and explained that I likely had an uphill battle due to the one-sided contract that I signed, however, after meeting with him and making him aware that I had all documentation, receipts, photographs to substantiate the damages caused, he indicated he had numerous prior dealings with the attorney representing the contractor and would do his very best to help me. In order to get a sense of the legal costs I might be facing, during the initial consultation I asked him to give me a range of what my legal expenses might be and he indicated they would likely be in the ballpark of the $1,500 retainer as long as court appearances and filing/answering lawsuits were not involved. I agreed. In the end (no court appearances or lawsuits were involved), I wound up settling this matter for THE FULL AMOUNT the pool contractor originally wanted, plus paying his firm $3,000.00 for their legal fees. There was zero benefit to me in hiring Michael Long. In the end, he did absolutely nothing to help me. Needless to say, I would not recommend this attorney or his firm Brewer Long.

I'm an attorney who can be somewhat demanding. But on the advice of my best friend, who was a former client of Michael Long, I reached out to him to handle a sensitive issue connected to my employment contract in effect at that time. Michael was incredibly efficient and delivered an answer I could depend on in very little time. He took even less time than I expected and helped me understand what I *could* do -- but even more importantly, offered me advice on what I *should* do. If I or a firend had a similar problem, I would recommend him without hesitation.

I'll refer to the business for whom I once worked that hired this person as the 'company'. Incompetence doesn't begin to describe this 'attorney'. He once left a deposition during which he proffered an elaborate collection of evidence to the other side in a powerpoint presentation and complained that maybe he had given away too much. Yeah, maybe everything. Our position in the case had just been severely worsened by him. It was like it was his first time, and this wasn't that long ago. He's an amateur at best, but too old for that. That case and several others were NEVER concluded by him despite years of repeated direction to settle the cases: Each and every one got worse with his involvement. All cases were settled by the company shortly after he abandoned them. It wasn't difficult. There's a reason he's no longer with any his previous firms and working alone. He would end his work with the company by taking legal action against that company on behalf of a former employee. Yes, he not only violated attorney/client privilege but he then attacked his own client. To my knowledge, at no time did he ever resign or withdraw from working for the company with whom I worked: He simply went to work for the other side without notice. Is that a thing? His poker buddy was the one who got him hired by the company. When his poker buddy got fired, he immediately turned on the firm. He worked with his poker buddy to attack the company, even going so far as to provide a false affidavit with extraordinary claims of money owed. This was withdrawn almost immediately when it was pointed out the legal risk of this false claim and how obviously fake it indeed was. What kind of attorney does this? This should have gone to the Florida Bar, he should have been disbarred. No formal complaint was ever filed, this is the kind of 'person' you're best just getting as far away from as possible. No complaint of any kind was filed previously, it was assumed this 'attorney' would fabricate some legal premise to continue unwarranted attacks. To this day, he continues to work with his poker buddy, hooking him up on failed construction projects. I pity the client. They've no idea what they're getting into - one is as incompetent as the other. Avoid this man at all costs. He shouldn't even be allowed to practice. Know that rules do not apply him. If that works for you, here's your man.

What a Business Lawyer Can Do for You

A business lawyer provides critical legal guidance and support to entrepreneurs, startups, and established businesses. Whether you are forming a new company, drafting contracts, or navigating complex regulations, a business attorney ensures you are legally protected and operating within the law. They can also help prevent legal disputes or represent you in negotiations, transactions, or lawsuits that arise during the course of business operations.

Business lawyers have expertise in areas such as business formation, contract law, intellectual property, employment law, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. They ensure that your business is compliant with relevant laws and help mitigate risks that could threaten your company's success.

When Should I Hire a Business Lawyer?

Hiring a business lawyer is essential at various stages of business development, including:

  • Forming a business: When deciding on the best structure for your company (LLC, corporation, partnership, etc.), a lawyer can guide you through the registration and compliance process.
  • Drafting contracts: If you need contracts for employees, partners, suppliers, or clients, a lawyer ensures these documents are legally sound and in your best interest.
  • Mergers, acquisitions, or dissolutions: If you are buying, selling, or dissolving a company, legal counsel is critical to avoid costly mistakes.
  • Compliance and regulatory issues: A lawyer can help navigate complex regulations, particularly in industries like healthcare, finance, or tech.
  • Resolving disputes: Whether it's contract disagreements, intellectual property infringement, or employment issues, a business lawyer helps mediate, negotiate, or litigate on your behalf.

What Does a Business Lawyer Do?

Business lawyers provide a wide range of services that cater to different legal needs of a business. They can:

  • Help you choose the best legal structure for your business.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
  • Advise on tax strategies to minimize your business's tax burden.
  • Assist with intellectual property protection, such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights.
  • Handle mergers, acquisitions, and business sales, ensuring all legal paperwork is in order.
  • Resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, or litigation.

How Are Business Lawyers Paid?

Business lawyers typically charge either by the hour or on a flat-fee basis, depending on the complexity of the work. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rates: The lawyer charges based on the time spent working on your case. Rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fees: For certain tasks, such as incorporating a business or drafting a standard contract, a lawyer may offer a flat fee.
  • Retainer: Some businesses may hire a lawyer on retainer, paying a fixed amount each month to have ongoing access to legal services.

The payment structure is often discussed during an initial consultation so you can choose the one that best suits your business needs and budget.

How Much Does a Business Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a business lawyer depends on factors such as:

  • The complexity of the legal issue: More complex matters, like mergers or intellectual property disputes, typically cost more than routine tasks like contract drafting.
  • The lawyer's experience and location: More experienced lawyers or those in larger cities often charge higher fees.
  • The nature of the billing arrangement: Hourly rates can range from $150 to $1,000 or more, depending on the lawyer's expertise. Flat fees are usually available for simpler matters like forming an LLC or drafting a standard contract.

It's essential to discuss fee structures upfront to avoid surprises.

Top Questions to Ask a Business Lawyer

Before hiring a business lawyer, ask the following questions during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with businesses like mine?
Find out if the lawyer has handled legal issues for companies in your industry.
  2. What services do you offer?
Ensure the lawyer can meet all your business's legal needs, from contract drafting to dispute resolution.
  3. What are your fees, and how do you bill?
Get clarity on how you'll be charged - whether by the hour, flat fee, or retainer.
  4. How do you handle conflicts of interest?
Ask how the lawyer ensures there is no conflict in representing your business.
  5. Can you provide references from other business clients?
Speaking with past clients will give you an idea of the lawyer's expertise and professionalism.
  6. Do you have experience in my specific industry?
Industry-specific knowledge can be crucial, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare or finance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Business Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable business lawyer:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is in good standing and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for client reviews or testimonials: Online reviews, testimonials, or word of mouth from other business owners can provide insight into the lawyer's reliability and effectiveness.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should have satisfied clients who can vouch for their services.
  • Check professional memberships: Membership in respected legal organizations (such as the American Bar Association or a local business lawyer association) can signal credibility.
  • Review their website and professional profile: A well-established lawyer typically has a professional website showcasing their areas of expertise, credentials, and case success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a business lawyer, prepare the following:

  • A description of your business and its structure: This will help the lawyer understand your legal needs.
  • Any current contracts or agreements: If you're seeking contract advice, bring copies of existing contracts.
  • A list of legal issues or concerns: Be ready to discuss any potential legal challenges, such as regulatory compliance, disputes, or transactions.
  • Financial documents: If applicable, bring financial records related to the legal matter you're seeking help with.
  • Questions about fees and billing: Ensure you understand the lawyer’s payment structure and fees upfront.

By preparing these materials, you can ensure that your first meeting with a business lawyer is productive and informative.
