Needed problems concerning Guardianship to be straightened out, due to the retirement of my previous attorney. Michael’s clerk/secretary was very kind, friendly, and understanding. The soonest appointment they had for a consultation was several days away, but she told me she would ask him if he would make time and call me that day.
He did call while I was on the phone with the other attorney’s office, and I missed the call. I called Michael’s office back, and both he and his secretary were still kind and willing.
Michael and his secretary/clerk were both warm, friendly, willing to listen and answer questions without interrupting. The other attorney’s office I consulted (Patrick King in Carson City) had a helpful and willing clerk, but she interrupted and spoke over me a lot. The speed she discussed the issues with made it difficult to take notes, but Michael Millward was very understanding of waiting while I wrote down what he said to later share with my husband. He also spoke with me directly for the consultation instead of a clerk.
My mother-in-law passed away intestate (without a will) over the weekend and my sister-in-law’s family didn’t understand how probate works and were already going through our mother’s belongings and throwing them away. They had no intention of filing for probate and didn’t understand that it isn’t optional and is legally required.
We all planned on needing to empty out the mobile home and possibly make repairs and renovations. We didn’t know what creditors Mom had or what assets. We knew she had a lot of medical bills and a small car loan. We were looking at having to do a *massive* amount of work, and it was very stressful.
Since Mom’s estate likely would have more liabilities than assets, Michael informed me that we don’t have to do the probate process and don’t have to administer the estate ourselves.
We can hand this over to the Carson City Public Administrator who handles estates for individuals with no will. Michael looked up the phone number after I asked for it. Phone number: 775-887-2260. Michael informed me that it might be the clerk’s office that answers because it appears that they share a division or office space; if so, ask for the administrator.
Michael, said to tell the administrator that a family member died, the cremation is handled, and no one in the family is interested in administering the estate.
That’s basically it.
There’s probably paperwork to sign, but we don’t have to do all the hard work we were planning on.
Again, we don’t have to clean out her house, dump her belongings, pay her rent, sell her house, or pay her bills. We don’t have to do anything beyond the cremation.
We *can* get photos and heirlooms, too, before handing it over.
Isn’t that wonderful??
I received a free consultation. I told Michael that I would gladly pay him for his time for the extremely helpful advice, but he said it wasn’t necessary. He also welcomed me to call back if I had any other questions.
Months ago we consulted a different estate/elder law attorney regarding my mother-in-law, Ernie Adler, and he was awful. He was disinterested, unhelpful, wasn’t friendly, answered our questions to a minimum or not at all, couldn’t answer some of them (said he didn’t know), and charged $200 for the brief consultation (less than 30 minutes).
Michael Millward was the stark and complete opposite. We highly recommend him!

I called HLC after my father passed recently. During my consultation, I spoke to Ms. Chu for over an hour. She took her time, listened and answered every question that I had. As you can imagine, in a situation like this, there were a lot of questions. A few hours after I spoke to her, I located a treasure trove of information and I would not have been able to understand any of it if she hadn’t taken her time and thoroughly explained the process and what exactly we were dealing with. She was knowledgeable, experienced and I could tell by speaking with her that she has that ‘thing’ in her that allows her to fight for her clients. She cares. Mr. Dixon helped me resolve a tax problem that I didn't even know about until I received letters from the IRS saying I owed money. My CPA looked at IRS rules and said I should pay the money because the IRS had given exact instructions on the issue. In my first meeting with Mr. Dixon, he took the time to learn all about my problem and asked for details regarding important facts unique to my circumstances. I could tell that he really was thinking through all the options before giving me several options on what I could do, along with all the pros and cons with each option. In the end, Mr. Dixon explained that the IRS rules were not the law and that the IRS was going against decisions by judges. I decided to have Mr. Dixon help me and clearly told me what I had to give him to help him do the job and explained certain things that his firm didn’t need to do and how it would save me money. I really appreciated the fact that he kept me involved in the process and let me know what was happening on my case. He always called or emailed me back when I had a question. With his attention to detail Mr. Dixon was able to figure out how the IRS was wrong and that I was actually owed money. All in all, Mr. Dixon found-out the best way to solve the problem and got me a great result. I am grateful to him and recommend Mr. Dixon for any tax problem.

Brad Monson, another attorney, did a careful appraisal of my needs, which had a few complications. He scheduled a free consultation with Bryan. I would definitely recommend Lyn. I had Lyn file a motion for an early termination of my probation after I was told by parole and probation I wasn't going to be able to be released early. Lyn was very nice and very professional. She had my motion filed very quickly and about a month after our initial meeting she had already recieved the court order terminating my probation and dismissing my charges. Garrett Sutton is the reason I can't make lawyer jokes anymore. He is trustworthy, smart, and ethical. Not much room for jokes there. He has helped me incorporate two businesses, written articles for magazines I've edited, and helped me form my publishing company, Lucky Bat Books. He has been there with patient answers for my most ridiculous questions and has always made me feel as if this business stuff is something I can handle. He not only formed my corporation, he guided me through writing contracts and establishing billing regimen, and even recommended someone to do my taxes. I would trust him with any legal matter.
Garrett's kindness is well known in my community and is a major reason I originally sought him out. I was referred to Chris to help with a business dispute between partners in a company where it was clear the partnership would be ended.
Chris was extremely helpful from the start. He assisted in developing the strategy to achieve our goal of ending the partnership and distribute the assets, but as in most cases like this emotions were running high and logic was not at the forefront of people's minds. Verizon called me for four years about someone else's unpaid bill. Although I kept telling Verizon they had the wrong number, both by phone and using Verizon's own online contact system, the calls kept coming. Verizon insisted they did not make calls like that and that the calls were not originating from them. When the calls increased (numerous calls in one day), I turned to Kim. She explained the federal statutes that cover this and I called Verizon again, mentioning key words. I was transferred to someone who found my number was incorrectly listed as an alternate contact number and the calls stopped! However, that was the last piece of the puzzle we needed and Kim went after Verizon and negotiated a very nice settlement. THANK YOU, KIM! No more calls AND a nice payoff.

Kurth law office has handled 2 of my custody battles and has been by far the most outstanding attorney anyone could ever ask for.
