We were looking for insight into a new venture, and if we should do it as part of our corporation or set up a new company. Jan gave us more than the simple answer to the question. She helped us to understand the nature of the interactions between the companies involved, tax ramifications of structuring the deal, as well as the most effective and profitable strategy for how we classify associated cost of goods internally.
She helped us to understand issues within our accounting systems and how that information would help us to have a deeper and more genuine insight into each step of the process between sales, product fulfillment and billing.
The new venture is up and running (well) and we have a stronger insight into how our businesses are performing. We've also reduced our tax bill. If you're looking for someone who is simply going to tell you what you want to hear, this might not be your attorney. My issue was a real-estate one, involving a not-so-amicable break-up and a co-owned house.
I spoke with five different lawyers before selecting one for my case, and Mr. Belong was the only one that I had a gut reaction telling me to hire him. In our initial consultation conversation he listened to everything I had to say, clearly took in all the information and gave me his opinions on what kind of case I had and how he would proceed. It was a really stressful situation for me but I felt an immediate sense of relief after hiring Mr. Belong because I could tell he not only knows his stuff, he is also caring and compassionate (not a hint of arrogance or self-importance).
Mr. Belong always took the time to hear me out and give me the best legal path forward. I could tell he wanted to get this done as quickly as possible with the best possible outcome for me – he was thorough yet efficient. Throughout the process he would discuss various approaches with me, listen to my thoughts on them, and would answer as many questions as I could throw at him. It felt like a collaborative effort…and when I was overwhelmed or truly didn’t have an opinion, I always trusted him to make the best choice for me.
It was a nightmare of a situation but Mr. Belong did everything he could to help me resolve the issue, and in the end I did get a settlement I believe is fair and is what I was hoping for. My mother and I went to Mr. Belong to help us with a dispute regarding a lien on my property and the refusal of my insurance company to take responsibility for their mistake in granting title without a thorough check for outstanding distresses on the property. Mr. Belong was the first attorney who listened to our problem, acknowledged our stress and anxiety and promptly began to help us find solutions. He appeared knowledgable of the applicable laws and ordinances as well as pragmatic in his actions. He was aware of our financial concerns and seemed like he genuinely wanted to help us. He took up our case the same day as our initial phone consultation on a Friday and the following Monday he was ready to begin sorting the situation out and researching the pertinent information. Of my dealings with lawyers in general, he seemed to be much more human and humane than I had experienced before and given the acute frustration I was going through, it made a big difference. The case was settled sideways through some unusual circumstances and Mr. Belong's services ended up being minimal, however, based on his demeanor and actions I would highly recommend him. I hired Ari to prepare an opposition brief due in 2 weeks in a trademark dispute in which he had no prior experience. Nonetheless, he quickly reviewed the Opening Brief, identified the relevant facts from the record, identified and analyzed the relevant law and prepared an outline of the key issues which formed the basis for the opposition brief. After reviewing and approving the outline, he efficiently prepared the draft brief which I then reviewed and approved with only minor changes. I believe that the opposition brief was extremely well done at a very reasonable fee (hours and rate). If Ari is capable of preparing a brief in an area with no prior experience in a limited time frame then I have no hesitation in recommending him for any briefing project. Amy has provided legal advice, litigation services, and has represented us both in court and in settlement negotiations. After her own thorough investigation of the facts, she is willing to go head to head against legal juggernauts and even government agencies. If settlement is not an option because opposing counsel is bent on litigating, she will zealously litigate for her clients; as she did for us. With her assistance we prevailed on a Writ of Mandate and Administrative Mandamus case (both in the appellate court and on remand) and had a breach of contract (in a related case) dismissed with prejudice even after the judge did not render a favorable decision. My case involved multiple building code violations along with harassment, racial abuse, sexism, and health risks. In addition, we were dealing with a incompetent landlord who did not maintain the property. Not to mention, hires criminals to be managers and maintenance personnel given their criminal history.
