Money hungry law firm. Our initial consultation was a waste of money. We were quoted an initial deposit and escrow fee which barely lasted a couple weeks. The emails from the firm were asking for more money with very little information. The home check they said we wouldn’t need cost us $250 because the judge said otherwise. They sent my husband to a fingerprinting facility that couldn’t even do that right. They failed and their staff couldn’t even figure it out. Waste of money and time spent trying to get that sorted. They couldn’t even show up to our court date on time. The after adoption instructions were basically figure it out yourself. We of course had to pay for that lack of information. I would never recommend them to my worst enemy. Don’t waste your time or money on them. It only stresses you out and ruins the experience.

This man was suppose to be one not to take sides but it was definitely shown in court that he was responsible for money being taken from an account and also this man was seeing othes involved in the case and most likely being paid by them under the table. In order to talk on the phone this persob wanted to bill even if he had never talked to the person in the past.

David was very informative and kept me "in the loop". Going through a custody battle can be rough and David was very understanding. I would also like to say that he is a " down to earth" type of person meaning someone that you can talk to about your case and be very comfortable with. He is very " up front " with everything! David Shippert comes HIGHLY recommended from my point of view.

My husband and I hired Kerry for a custody issue with my stepchildren. She heard everything we had to say and talked over what we needed to do on our end. She was able to get us full custody with a visitation schedule for the kids bio mom. Because of Kerry we were able to provide a safe environment and gain a beautiful co-parent relationship. We would not have this relationship if not for Kerry. Custody battles are hard and we had lots of questions all of which Kerry answered quickly and efficiently. She handled our case as if it were her own children. We appreciate her kindness and wisdom beyond words! I will always refer Kerry to anyone needing custody services! We are highly satisfied!

Kerry has been a God sent to our family. She helps us obtain joint custody a couple of years ago of our son and since has continued to be there for us everytime a problem occurs. We recently needed her again and again she came to our aide and helped us fight. We will never stop being greatful for her. She is a fantastic Attorney and the three times we've needed her in the past 4 years she's won our case everytime! There aren't many attorneys that you will find that will work harder and she believes in fathers too and equality in a mother and fathers parenting time and abilities and that's a wonderful quality.

Only reason I’m giving two stars instead of one is because of how friendly and helpful the paralegal that works here is. I sent my girlfriend to a consultation here in order to gain custody through a divorce and after explaining the case work to him instead of helping her started asking her questions that made her feel like he was attacking her mental health. She stood up and walked out after he told her to go home and take her medicine. Needless to say, we will not be paying the 200$ consultation fee he asks for just to have an appointment set up to be insulted.

I hired him after my husband had a three year affair. He was recommended from an acquaintance. I was young, naive, and very vulnerable. He would yell at me, talk down to me, and even told me to shut up in front KC my soon to be ex and his lawyer. There were so many more things I could have gotten if I would have known what to ask for. But he was supposed to be my protector… not the case!

After a social worker friend referred me, I retained Howard Gold for my divorce and custody dispute. He was rude, made sexist and suggestive comments, came to court late (and charged me for the extra time since we were bumped to the back of the log) and charged me to give me information he’d already told me about. I later found out from two different women that they had similar experiences to mine. Think before you hairs this man!

I will be recommending Howard to any friends/family that are looking for a family law attorney. He helped me through a very difficult and confusing case and came out with a positive, fair outcome. He is professional and also understands the psychology behind family law. His paralegal, Matt, was so kind and understanding. He's incredibly knowledgeable, intelligent, and attentive. They make a great team, and I felt confident being represented by Howard. I went from being upset and confused to empowered and confident about my case because of Howard and Matt. If you want an experienced attorney with not only the best legal relationships, but a paralegal that is absolutely the top of his field, hire Howard.

It was bad all around for me if I didn’t know any better. I would say it was four against one. She gave me lots of advice to just settle out. For the best interest of the defendant. the (insurance) company I didn’t feel like anyone was mediating on my behalf. I feel like the mediation was for the defense side only! Very unhappy!!! My ex took my Son to Illinois on an order written by a Commissioner in Bakersfield. She wanted a $50 consult fee. I paid $25 in cash, and wrote a check for the other $25. Considering hiring this attorney , but her prices are doubled compared to a few other local offices…so do some research beforehand. Her personality was great and I found some helpfulness in the advice I was given. After my consult I spoke with a friend who hired her as her attorney to gain insight on what it’ll be like working with her. she said lots things would always pop up because of personal events happening in Cynthias life. Which caused delay with her case. She also mentioned her office manager just wasn’t the best to work with and always made her feel stupid for asking about her case or having any questions at all. She ended up hiring someone different.. I will mention.. I didn’t like how her office manager spoke with me when I scheduled my consult either. So extremely rude with snide comments. When I called back to see how I could pay, I was greeted with a different office staff who seemed more polite and helpful to my concerns for payment! I spoke with this lady for about 10 minutes. If I remember correctly her name was Marlene! If you call this attorneys office just make sure to speak with her! Extremely helpful!! Thought I’d leave a more recent review since I struggled to find one. Still debating hiring Cynthia. Will leave an updated review when I have decided.

After researching companies that were successful in cases against HOA's I hired this firm 5 years ago. I asked if they could win and was told yes. February 2023 we had to agree to a settlement. In that 5 years we changed lawyers 5 times. I would call to find out what was happening and was always told that they were waiting on the HOA attorney and that's just the way this worked. I ended up paying this attorney more than if I had just paid the HOA fine. There is no real update from them, unless you call their monthly bill an update. The last attorney assigned did manage to get a settlement worked out. We took it because I was not going to drag this out another 5 years and 5 different attorneys.

This is a poor start. After speaking with the staff and an attorney with the John Miller and Associates Law Firm... I paid the non-refundable fee, agreed to the initial date and time set by the staff and called 1 hour before the appointed time to confirm the appointment. After the appointed time and 15 min before the close of business, I called the office and was informed that the attorney was not going to make the meeting. Summary: the attorney did not display the expected professionalism and courtesy to take the time to call to me, and provide an apology and reschedule the meeting. This is definitely a teachable moment for John Miller and his Associates...provide timely information to the clients and be more considerate of our time. Thank you Keith Wright

My encounter - My divorcing spouse wanted to cherry-pick among our 'same-blood' children during our divorce. Angie's judge-recommendation was to award 'division' of our children, between homes, instead of awarding them to stay together, between homes. --Is that looking out for our children's best interests? really?... I unfortunately discovered later I was not the only one she did this to during her practice of law. Ask yourself, who separates young brothers and sisters of the same bloodline? --Angie does I've found, and does it regularly. Caution -check her records.

Angela Woodall is without a doubt the worse lawyer I have ever encountered. Her office looks like it just came out of a cardboard box, She claimed to be an expert on family law but when we went to mediation the opposing counsel schooled her like she was a pre-law undergrad. Every-time she needed a document for my case she asked me to print it because her printer was small and too expensive to use. After it became evident that the divorce was not going to be as simple as she promised she withdrew from the case without notice. If she is your lawyer dismiss her immediately before you get screwed over as well. I am posting this anonymously as I have a pending complaint against her with the GA Bar.

I hired Ms. Woodall in 2017, I told her that I needed an attorney that would have my best interest during my divorce. In my opinion What I got was an attorney who was not knowledgeable about the law and constantly asking for money, though we never made it to court. I continuously asked her what my case status was and have you talked to the other attorney. In my opinion it seemed I would almost have to force her to contact my wife's lawyer. It is my opinion that she was never aggressive, she would say I just need another payment to take us to the end of the case but there was never an end. After almost a year of seemingly no results. I asked her to please remove herself from the case. I filed for a hearing myself and hired another attorney. Surprise, surprise I was divorced in a month. From this new attorney I learned that I didn't have to pay the whole mortgage on a house I didn't live in and that my ex wife should have paid at least half. My new attorney asked why I never got an emergency hearing? She said a judge would have made her pay because she had no vested interests to do so. In my opinion that would have been nice to know from Ms. Woodall. I wound up paying the entire mortgage for a year. Then the new lawyer asked me why I was giving my wife 35% of a house she did not buy, never paid mortgage in, and her name was not on the deed. My new attorney explained that she could have gotten that percentage much lower. In my opinion that would have also been nice to know from Ms. Woodall. Instead Ms. Woodall worked a 65% to 35% split. I never write reviews but I am making a special exception for Ms. Woodall. There are thousands of good attorneys in the Atlanta to Dallas GA area, in my opinion she is not one of them. Save your self some time and money by always check reviews when hiring an attorney. In my opinion run from any attorney with low rating on Avvo and other such sites.

I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the incredible legal support provided by Kathy Portnoy and her team. Strategic Brilliance: From the outset, it was evident that Kathy approached my case with a strategic mindset. She crafted a well-thought-out plan that not only addressed immediate concerns but also looked ahead to long-term resolutions. Kindness and Compassion: My case was emotionally draining, but Kathy navigated the complexities with unwavering kindness. Her compassion made the legal process more humane and bearable during what was an incredibly challenging time for my family. Fair and Just: Kathy's commitment to fairness was apparent in every aspect of her work. Strength in Advocacy: My case demanded strength and resilience, and Kathy exemplified both. Her tenacity and ability to stand up for my rights were instrumental in achieving a favorable outcome. Legal Brilliance: It's not every day you come across someone as brilliant in their field as Kathy Portnoy. Her legal acumen was apparent in every interaction, providing me with confidence and reassurance that I was in the hands of an expert. Unwavering Ethics: Kathy upheld the highest standards throughout. Best in the Southeast (and Beyond!): While it might sound like an exaggeration, I firmly believe that Kathy Portnoy is the best not just in the Southeast but possibly in the entire country. In sum, Kathy Portnoy and her team did more than represent me – she saved my life and brought sanity back to my family. If you find yourself in need of an attorney who combines strategic brilliance, compassion, fairness, strength, and unwavering ethics, look no further. I wholeheartedly recommend her services; she is, without a doubt, the best in the business. I am forever grateful.

I was referred to Kathy Portnoy by the best defense attorney in the country! I quickly realized she is his gold standard equivalent in the family law arena. Kathy took my call one night ..spent hours listening to my circumstances ..and did not run! Instead she relished the challenge. Kathy untangled exhaustive legal mishaps that predated her representation. She transformed my protracted, muddy custody case into a clear blueprint for success. Undeterred, patient, and creative! Kathy did what only the best attorneys can do for their most anxious clients. She managed a potent legal approach ..while also managing me! I am so grateful for this resolution. Thank you Attorney Kathy Portnoy!!!

Very disappointed with the results that I got with this attorney. I used him for my divorce and child custody. Never held true to the things he told me. The main problem is that he is a part of the "good ol' boys" in Thomaston and only interested in "MONEY", not taking care of his clients. Spent a great deal of useless time and money dealing with Mr. Irvin which is something that I will never do again. He was highly reccommended to me before I hired him so I was totally surprised that he wasnt as great a lawyer as some had portrayed him to be. Lesia seemed interested in the divorce case when I hired her and that interest lasted only a few months. I am aware that she had some difficulty with the husband's stalling antics since he would not sign anything. But let me make it very clear that she was disappeared and while we may have access to her text messages she has not returned our messages or phone calls. She left with the case up in the air. So very unprofessional and was a tremendous letdown for us as we had already paid her to file the paperwork. I feel that once she discovered how difficult the husband was going to be, it would have been most professional of her to let us know that she wanted off the case.

Contrary to the two reviews I have read on this site Mrs. Forwood has been there in every step of my case. I believe she has the knowledge and compassion that is required in such legal cases as my own. Mrs. Forwood is a constant guardian in my definition and a great lawyer, and I would recommend her to anybody I know that needs such representation. Her tenacity and presence in court is unparalleled by anyone's standards and believes in the right thing for the case. Even if it is not in favor of what "the client wants" it will be the right thing to do. This I trust, and am willing to say it with confidence and conviction. In a nutshell, I am more than pleased with the services rendered thus far in an ongoing case and am pleased to have been referred to Mrs. Forwood by a very well known practice in the athens area.

I was not happy with my experience with Ms. Forwood. I increasingly felt less confident that she was a strong advocate, efficient, and effective. Her lack of knowledge is apparent, and she drags on her case in order to increase the cost of her services. I felt that she presented options for me that were detrimental. Additionally, I thought she treated the paralegal poorly, talked behind the paralegal's back. She doesn't realize that she is a fool, and appeared that way in front of the judge and the opposing council. Choosing her was an embarrassment. She is simply a failure at her work.

I did not hire this attorney, but my wife did. I am not an attorney, I do not even do reviews like that. I watch a lot of Law and Order, Dateline, 20/20, a big murder mystery buff. I never seen a professional so unprepared in my life. To add insult to injury, I personally made sure my wife sent pictures of an incident that took place to Mrs. Rowe's office. We get to court and she does not even have the evidence THAT WE PROVIDED!!! While we were in court it was like she did not even know why we were there. We asked for clarification on charges that we received from the office and no one could explain why there was a lack of communication on billing WHEN NOTHING HAD BEEN ACCOMPLISHED. She guaranteed a win and we continued to lose on a simple matter with tons of evidence in my wife's favor. She still got paid though. If you would like to throw away your case, by all means please hire Mrs. Rowe.

So I was referred to this lawyer by my company’s legal benefits plan to handle two cases that I have ongoing. For one of the cases (lets call it case A), only the initial consultation was covered under the legal plan, and for the other case (lets call it Case B), the legal plan (I was told) covered the whole thing. So I had the free consultation with the lawyer concerning case A, and paid him $1500 up front to handle that particular case, and signed a contract for that case and that case only. That was the first, and last time I ever spoke to him. Shortly thereafter, I was made aware of case B, which (I was told by Mario’s associates) was a completely separate case, that it could not be incorporated into the first (even though the people involved were similar), and that I would have to find a way to pay for it separately. So after some research on the Hyatt legal site, it appeared that Case B was actually covered by my benefits, so I generated a case number and provided it to Mario’s associates, who then informed me that the case could be covered under hyatt legal and to send them the documentation that I had on the case. Then, for the next 4 weeks, I only got one call from the associates, who had called to tell me of a rescheduled court date they never informed me had been scheduled. I ended up hiring a new attorney and asking for a summary of work performed against my retainer, and he rolls both cases into the case where I paid the retainer, and made rediculously high withdrawls for non-legal items (charged $290 to read emails!?!?!?), but he also charged me for items AFTER he had been terminated. This man is a monster, the worst kind of human being. I can only pray that they will bar him from ever practicing law again.

It wasn't until I went by his office to ask for a refund, did he then tell me he had my case ready to file. When I read over it, he had a lot of the information wrong. He lost my info sheet twice along the way. I don't believe he looked at any evidence that I provided. He was always losing my information and couldn't keep up with what information I had already provided him. This along with much more of his lack of actually caring enough about me or my case to spend much time on it at all. The only call I received from him was the day of my Final Hearing, telling me that he made a deal with my spouse's attorney and cost me a lot more to have to pay out for the next several years. I don't feel like he made much of an attempt to fight for me. I don't feel like he worked enough on my case to warrant the retainer I paid him. Do not trust this man with your case. I wonder how many other people's lives have been negatively affected due his poor work ethic. There were so many red flags, but he assured me that it would be fine. I trusted him with so much and he failed me. Hindsight is truly 20/20. I hope this will deter anyone else to put their trust and life in his hands. Remember, whatever the outcome of your case is, it does not effect this man's life one bit.

My discoveries were due, I made multiple attempts to contact Toland and he would not return my calls and did not show up for my appointment at his office because he was "sick." The deadline came and went. It was my understanding that I lost my case due to this but luckily my husband and I are trying to make it work. Do not trust yours or your children's wellbeing to this attorney.

Despite coming highly reviewed, I was extremely disappointed with her lack of objectivity. She did not consider all the facts and information that was presented to her by several parties. She made a very skewed recommendation that sided with a sub par parent. By all means, do your research and choose your lawyer carefully.

Case assigned to underling who could not hold her own for the client in a negotiation with a high school drop out. Often wondered if she was representing the person I paid her to represent or the lazy convicted meth manufacturer she should have been defending her client against. Would never recommend her and the cost was extreme.

I retained The Law Office of Julie C. Moore, LLC for an automobile accident I was involved in. During the year-process, there were several issues and concerns that I have. At no point did I ever meet with Ms. Moore. All of my phone communication and in-person communication was with the paralegal, from the initial consultation through me receiving my payout. At the consultation, I was told that the firm’s fee was 30% and at the time that I received my payout the fee miraculously changed to 33%. The firm initiated a claim with my insurance company to receive additional funds but did not inform me of their intentions to do so. I was notified by my insurance company and then I received a call from the paralegal informing me that they had already submitted a claim. The communication with the paralegal was horrible and I had to constantly call her to check on the status of my claim, with very little follow-up. The paralegal initially told me that she would assist with the diminished value on my vehicle but never followed up and I had to take care of that myself. I would never recommend Ms. Moore or her firm. I feel that they were deceptive and their level of service was below average. I also feel that they were only in it for the check they received and not my best interests. Additionally, I signed over a check that the firm received from the insurance received that was in my name. The paralegal presented the check to me backwards and I was instructed to sign the check without seeing it. I had to turn the check around to actually see what I was signing and for what amount. I was then instructed to sign a document indicating that they would withhold monies for any bills that I was still liable for, when I had already instructed them to pay all of my bills first prior to giving me my payout.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
