trustworthy responsive dedicated reputable informed efficient diligent brilliant ethical sharp Kevin Gage is all of these, and more. I cannot imagine a better divorce attorney. Little could I appreciate, when my journey first began, the intricate complexities of family law. Kevin's handling of my case was masterful. I always felt like my case was the most important one on Kevin's desk. Kevin is highly conscientious -- all conversations were conducted swiftly and responsibly with a keen regard to my needs and my time. Whenever opportunities for lessening costs were available, Kevin made sure I was presented with these options. I truly believe that had I selected a different attorney, I would not have received the robust spousal and child support Kevin secured for me. The death of a marriage brings many regrets -- don't let the attorney you select be one of them. Go with Gage, you will not be disappointed.

I appreciated Sam J. Kuzma’s highly skilled abilities in navigating Oregon Family Law, in patiently listening to my complex case details, in showing compassion with professionalism, and in prioritizing the imperatives to develop a powerful, truthful, trial action plan! Sam is a kind, humble, powerful, strong leader that you definitely want on your team—he knows Oregon Law and will work hard and smart in the pursuit of justice for you. (He will cross multiple county lines, and learn the nuance differences of the law in your county, to successfully have your back in mediation and trial. Ask Sam as many questions as you need to spur consistent, productive, and clear communication. He will respond to what is most important for defending you and your best interest.)

Sam Kuzma did a masterful job navigating the minefield that was my divorce. Since I was the Petitioner, he wrote the Stipulated Judgment. He did a fantastic job of preparing me for what was to happen down the road. I certainly wasn't the best client, but he persevered and did not stint on effort. I highly recommend Sam, especially if you are the Petitioner in a High Conflict Divorce case. 100% recommended

Sam is a rockstar and went above and beyond for our family when faced with an unexpected divorce and custody dispute. He helped streamline the process and simplified things, he helped me understand what my rights were and what I could and couldn’t expect out of the process and really supported our kids’ best interest. As a father and husband himself, I appreciated his unique professional and personal perspective because it’s easy to get tunnel vision when we are in crisis. He is honest, responsive, reliable, trustworthy, knowledgeable and genuine. This is the attorney you want by your side, 110%.

When my brother passed away unexpectedly last August, I had no idea what to do next. I live 2800 miles from him and I had no idea what the laws in Oregon were. I contacted an attorney that was extremely busy and could not help me, but they recommended Kirk Strohman. I feel like that was truly the luckiest recommendation for me. Kirk was the best attorney for my situation for sure. He and his staff guided me through a very difficult situation with kindness, patients and empathy. I would highly recommend Kirk Strohman and his associates for anyone that needs help with settling an estate.

They have hearings without serving papers. They don't follow the law. They're sneaky and snakey. Update: my paralegal told me about how this law firm ran and I posted it on here. Now Brad Miller is questioning my mental health because I posted what my paralegal Nicole told me about how this firm runs. Because I posted an honest review Brad Miller is trying to retaliate in my current custody battle. Brad Miller emailed me May 2 2023 in the evening and had an immediate danger hearing May 3 without serving me papers. He has griped that I emailed him when he has emailed me personally. My mental health is fine Brad Miller. Had a psych evaluation done.

If you really want to stick it to your ex and you want that feeling that you beat them, this is the firm for you. This firm is effective! They will bend the truth for you in court and in numerous superfluous memos. They will bully your ex and drag out the process to ensure that your ex suffers. In fact, they copied me on an internal communication which showed that they will even lie to each other within their own firm. Now, when you come out of the divorce, they will have taken everything from you financially, but who cares when you succeeded in making your ex suffer and that their tactics make thing so toxic that you will hardly be able to co-parent with your ex in the future. To ensure this process drags out as long as possible, they will neglect to let you know that your ex has made offers to settle. For over two years, SKH will make no offers settle with your ex and they will encourage you to not accept any offers because why do that when they can make more money taking this to court. They have so many cases going to court that the judge rebuked SKH for delaying court for 4 months because they had so many court cases booked, but the judge can’t actually do anything to stop these grey area tactics, so it gives you more time to bully your ex! This firm will back you up and encourage you to take your ex for everything. And while this won’t let you move on with your life, who cares as long as you get to falsely believe that your ex is suffering more because of it. Thanks SKH! I don’t have anything left to pay you with anymore, but at least I can feel like my ex suffered.

If you are facing not one but multiple criminal charges (counts) involving the operation of a motor vehicle which carry the potential consequences of jail time and a big license suspension if convicted, there is good news. You can call Ben and Mark. Prior to facing this type of vexing ordeal, I had never been arrested in my lifetime. My case went all the way past a favorably conducted evidentiary hearing and legal conferences, just shy of having a 6-person jury trial scheduled with the Court over several months (longer than a year)—where Ben and Mark tirelessly, diligently, masterfully worked as the lead Attorney on defeating the entire case. All charges are being dismissed! Thank you.

Zachary Gottlieb took over my case after 10 months of getting nowhere with my existing divorce attorney. He not only had to step in and fix all the issues she had caused, he had limited time to do so. He always emailed or called me back nearly instantly. He was extremely thoughtful, guiding me through the process on what was a very complicated situation. The papers were signed today and I couldn't be happier. I highly recommend Zachary Gottlieb to anyone who needs an attorney who will be there for them. I felt he really cared, his actions and outcome of the case are testimony of his abilities. It has been almost 2 years and I am grateful I had the opportunity of starting my family law case with Katherine Denning. Unfortunately, my situation was incredibly high conflict and I started out without representation and restraining orders on both sides were approved with identical restrictions. After a consultation, Katherine helped with confidence and determination. Slowly that all unraveled as communicating became confusing and eventually I was working with Zach right before a seperate hearing relating to my childrens' home and possessions. When I had cried on the phone due to being overwhelmed I was dropped by Katherine with only 2 days left until a hearing took place. I was referred to another attorney/firm. I'll never forget trying to find a lawyer and requesting that the judge postpone the hearing. I represented myself at the hearing and although i didn't get the outcome i wanted, I am proud of myself for facing my abuser on the stand. His lawyer also messed up quite a bit and was less scary during the hearing. However, the judge had no sympathy that I was lawyerless in which I am getting very used to in the legal field. Overall, my ex' lawyer was agressive and unfortunately my replacement did not put in an effort at all. This is no fault of Litowich, however I do think attorneys should be willing to learn how to deal with victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault before taking on high conflict cases. It's reasonable for clients to be confused or emotional, however If you have a high conflict case that involves domestic abuse, do your best not to become emotional or look for a lawyer who is patient and experienced with domestic/sexual abuse survivors.

We had a very bad experience with Mr. Hwang. This was the only appointment we had with him. I think he is impersonal, angry, self absorbed and not patient. What do people need when they are going through the worst of their lives? -Patience, kindness and awareness of other people’s feelings, as death can be devastating for the family and friends. Knowledge without these traits is like getting a big enciclopedia. Please read all the reviews that have been written about him. I did not before setting an appointment, and regretted it.

Jinoo Hwang was referred to me by another lawyer who recommended him for his skills in creating a trust that was more useful for me because it was applicable in all 50 states and not just one. Jinoo's knowledge of recent changes in trust laws were invaluable in creating a trust which is inclusive of my estate but also allows me the flexibility to designate specific things to individuals in the event of my passing. The final piece that I was impressed with was the succession of trustees and the inclusion of a third party to act as the trustee in case of need. All trustees are fiduciary and charged with administering the trust in my best interest. This final piece afforded me much peace of mind. I recommend Jinoo's services in this manner.

I’ve been through multiple attorneys and William is by far is the best I’ve come across. He is professional and respectful to his clients and gets the job done. Don’t waste your time on anyone else acting like a car salesman/woman, telling you everything you want to hear to get the retainer. If you want a good attorney this is your guy but you must schedule phone calls as he is super bzy with many other clients cases. You get what you pay for here. My case is still ongoing but I’m confident in this attorney. William is also honest in his methods and hours worked.

He doesn’t care! He sees dollar signs and tells me I should sue my past attorney for what she failed to include in my divorce. Doesn’t even want to look at the bank statements and my husbands Quicken account with my son’s savings account numbers, and my account numbers, set for download and transfer… which he did. He doesn’t care that my husband abused and stole from my kids and I, prior to our marriage. This attorney is book smart. Immature at life. Talks down to me as if I’m a child; I’m at least twice his senior. Arrogant firm; arrogant attorney.

I retained Larry in 2017 for an assult 2 case. He didn't properly communicate over the phone, return phone calls or do anything he said he would, he always had an excuse for why he didn't do his job....I served 70 months due to his lack of negotiation skills. He made no effort to get me a better plea deal. I've talked to other attorneys who have told me I should have been convicted of assult 3 and served 2-3 years. Please listen and don't retain him for yourself or your family. I have met many of his clients he represented that had this same experience...fair warning!!! You don't want to serve way more time then necessary.

He was great at helping me understand what was vital versus minutiae when it came to finalizing the parenting plan and divorce decree. He was prepared and also had me prepared with all of my financial, business, and personal documents needed for the mediation. He had a great relationship with the mediator we used and knew how to deal with the personality types of my ex and her attorney. Brad Litchfield accepted the case and we feel so fortunate to have been in his care. I feel certain my case was not the most important matter in his caseload, but he always made me and my son feel as though it was. If you are considering hiring C.J. Graves as your lawyer, I’d like to share my troubling experience working with him on a parenting plan modification which would result in a child support modification. Now, keep in mind, I have sole legal custody of my son. Unfortunately, C.J. satisfied all of the opposing party's requests for the provisions in the new supplemental judgement. Nothing we discussed and initially agreed between parties when we “settled” out of court was included in the judgement, except for the 50/50 that I agreed to. The opposing party submitted the judgement that they drafted as final. C.J. submitted the response which was disregarded by Judge Bailey and he signed the opposing parties draft as final. This did not include ANY of the agreed upon/revised provisions that we discussed. C.J. found out about this, called me and emailed me and said he wasn’t happy with the new judgment. However, he signed it without my knowledge and approval. From there, he was not able to discuss the damaging and inaccurate statements with opposing counsel. Not only did the child support modification not include the private health insurance I pay for my son, he also allowed the opposing party to include close to $800 in health care related expenses. He flat out told me he would get this fixed. That never happened. He didn’t even get the other party to agree to edit the start date that the new parenting plan started. This resulted in a 3-month retro for the other party- which was a lie. Either C.J. lacks knowledge of basic information on how to modify a child support payment and/or the ability to properly represent a client. How are basic, fundamental, and true facts not incorporated in a new judgement when you have a lawyer representing you and these were specific things I had to ask him to change? It appears that C.J. was very helpful in allowing the other party to achieve what they wanted. So, in essence, C.J. did not negotiate ANYTHING on my behalf. He did not do the work that I paid him for (negotiating and representing me) because the judgement says it all. This resulted in an inaccurate monthly child support payment, and C.J. knew it. There are additional factors that are influencing my rating and decision which I prefer to leave outside of this review. However, one of the most outstanding is his response time. I would not hear from him for 2 weeks, if not more. Part of his communications said that we shouldn’t “push it” or “upset them in any way,” if we wanted them to agree to consider changing anything (to the true information). This was concerning to me because C.J. constantly told me that the opposing counsel didn’t call him back or reply to his emails. His inability to communicate with opposing counsel set me back and put me in a very compromised position. C.J. was hired to negotiate and represent me. Unfortunately, I lost more than what rights I went in with, and he is very aware of this. At minimum to have the health care expense I pay for my son included in the child support calculator. I have always maintained health insurance for my son. Uninterrupted medical coverage. The lack of timely communication left me wondering for weeks if anything was happening and or going to change. He also made deceiving promises about outcomes that were valid and realistic. I walked out losing and 100% unsatisfied. This was a clear-cut case, and C.J. did not do his job. I truly felt neglected and that my case was not a priority for C.J. He was not able to achieve anything for me and the final judgement contained clauses that were never agreed upon. He was not able to negotiate anything for me. He even stated that in his conversations with opposing counsel, “We simply could not reach a resolution as to the issues”. Simply put, the other party was able to create a judgement that included everything they wanted (that was not agreed upon) and C.J. had no power to negotiate it.

C.J. Graves and Jaqueline Swanson-Graves are hands down the most thorough and highly educated team. They hold the bar of ethics extremely high and treated me with the upmost care and respect. I have 110% trust for the way they handled my case. C.J. Graves took my case on a Thursday, studied it over the weekend and won for me that next Tuesday. I described him as an angel with blazing swords. One could also call him a peaceful warrior, for every action, decision and advice he gave me was in the theme of being peaceful and winning without throwing mud. I am forever grateful that I had the honor of being represented by C.J. Graves.

Albert did a fantastic job helping me through the divorce process. He was always objective and focused on the goal and being fair in the process. He or his assistant always returned my calls promptly. I had 100% confidence in his knowledge and experience.

I was more than surprised that Avvo did NOT post my prior review although it was factual, specific. Especially since there are virtually no reviews on this attorney. Specifically, I spent 60% of my entire cost of divorce with Albert and made virtually no tangible progress toward any of the steps required to actually get divorced. Except for initial meetings with opposing counsel that produced no progress at all, we never got close to discovery, settlement conferences, mediation or, of course, court. I had to leave the firm due to the lack of progress in relation to a very large fee, $550 an hour at the time I employed the firm. What's more, Albert insisted that it was "cost effective" to have his paralegal in every meeting with him, adding nearly $200 more an hour. It was not cost effective. I ultimately had to leave the firm due to very little progress in relation to a very large legal bill. The attorney I transferred to was a 5* rated Martindale and Hubbell attorney who took me all the way through divorce with a satisfactory result for 40% of the fee paid to Albert's firm with very little progress. When I left, I asked if I might employ Albert if necessary as a consultant in settlement negotiation having had no experience with the new law firm. Albert said, "no." I felt it was spiteful in relation to my leaving the firm. I said in my last review and will say again, Albert did boast about his accomplishments in my time with him and in a meeting with opposing counsel. I thought this inappropriate, especially on my dollar. Albert is certainly a competent attorney. I feel, however, that there are many attorneys as competent at a far lower fee and I actually believe I got a better outcome with the new firm at a dramatically lower cost. I say I believe I got a better outcome because my result was better than the result Albert was preparing me for.

Paid a ton of money to get the worst possible outcome for child custody. Told me to give them full custody and focus on parenting time. Went with it. Didn’t get more parenting time at all. 2 weekends a month….. Told me we can pursue in court, but it would be thousands more. What a joke.

DO NOT RETAIN THEM. They put on a good "act" but they will drag the process out as they continue to charge you. As well as pass you around between the lawyers, ask for paperwork and information multiple times, and in the end send you to court with an unprepared lawyer in training who will fumble your case completely. The result being losing on all points as well as having to pay. STAY AWAY.

Lillian Bier and her team are very professional and knowledgeable they went above and beyond to give justice to my son and me. She brought back my faith in legal system . Lillian is the third attorney I hired so far I wish if she was the first attorney I would have hired … I hired Lilin 2020 since my 14 year old son was abused by his father and paternal grandmother then again I rehired Lillian in 2023 since my ex and his attorney lied to the court and got a false judgement against me and Lillian fought tooth and nail to relief me from the false judgement..Lilian knows her job so well…You can take your issues to her and she will fight like hell for you as a client. Lil You have made our lives better in every way and we are eternally grateful! Thank you for everything we will never ever forget it. If you are still on the fence about hiring Lillian Bier as an attorney then look no further for someone with a passion for justice, a fighter for her clients, and the most honest and direct lawyer then look no further because Lil is a top notch attorney you can hire… there’s no regret in hiring Lil… Bier family law is the best law firm you can come across very excellent and efficient.. Lil is the person you want on your side. She's a brilliant lawyer with deep insight she’s the law herself….She listens, communicates, responds and gets the job done for her client. Detail oriented and frankly a lovely person to work with. She made me feel comfortable every step of the way, right up to winning for me. when Lil speaks opposition becomes speechless ….

This law office has a reputation for weaponizing the discovery process, which will be unnecessarily expensive for both parties. It is possible they will cut and run once they have made a set amount from their client, and before going to court and risking losing their case based on unfounded nonsense.

I am a retired businessman. Robert Scherzer is the worst employee ever. Robert Scherzer heads my list, as the most horrible person I can imagine hiring, to represent me in a legal matter. Early on, in my custody hearing, Robert complained that he doesn't sleep well at night. I figured out his problem. He doesn't sleep well at night because he sleeps all day in court. I also asked him if he would take my direction and ask the questions that I wanted him to ask. He agreed, but failed miserably. Despite his encouragement, that I had a 75 to 85% chance of victory, he lost. Then, he informed me that WE may have left ourselves open to some opposition attorney fees. I am thankful that I fired him and represented myself, in the attorney fee hearing. I think I was infinitely more convincing than he would have been and was able to limit my losses. After this debacle, I asked my 90 year old mother to describe Robert Scherzer's performance. Her one word response was "PANIC". I completely agree. I also sincerely accuse him of excessive billing, for his ridiculously poor services. No stars! Refund owed! Richard

Robert is the best attorney you could possibly hire. He is compassionate, empathetic, a great listener, and very calm. My case was very complicated and there was only one case in the entire country that paralleled that of mine. He researched and consulted with many attorneys as well as constantly keeping me abroad of our circumstances. He is kind and knowledgeable and fought for me every single minute of every single day. I would not wish divorce on anyone, but if you find yourself in that situation, Robert is the one you want to go to. He is very well respected By his colleagues and even fellow divorce attorneys. And his assistant, Kelli is as equally kind and compassionate. If Robert were not my attorney, he would be my friend. Well, I will actually consider him my friend. Because he helped me turn the worst situation of my life into something I can cope with.

I retained Robert in January 2016 to help me win custody and as much parenting time possible of my young son. We've been working together over a year now, and I can't imagine having any other attorney on my team. From the start Robert encouraged me to take the high road against my ex-husband. Our legal strategy focused on how I had always been and would continue to be the primary parent, and not on debasing my ex-husband. This felt good to me because it honored my ex-husband's role in my son's life and was consistent with my personal values. We stayed the course over 12 months, through hearings and a deposition and finally 3 days of trial. Robert's calm and thoughtful legal advice never wavered from our initial strategy, and it was clear to me from the judge's response and verdict that it was the right strategy. We did win everything we asked for, and I am eternally grateful that Robert was my attorney in this case. I still call him to talk through challenging situations with my ex-husband, and always feel better after I do.

I purchased property in Tillamook County in 2016 that was reported as 10 + acres. All tax records indicated 10 + acres. After 2 years my Co. tax assessment claimed I owned 8 acres. Upon review and checking dimensions that concurred I did in fact own 10+ acres. Upon consulting Zupanic Law a $2500 retainer was required, no problem. I was disappointed that there was no contact with Tillamook County to address my situation by my Attorney and the response I received from Zupanic Law was the land description did not add up. There was no visit to the property or no visit from Zupanic.. never even met the guy, and $1300 later I was SOL.

Paid him a large sum to prep for the hearing. <He estimated it would be $5k in the Consultation-way way off.> I had already paid filing fee and submitted all Documents but felt that I wanted Attorney Representation in the hearing. My most recent Statement showed $1900 left in the trust. The hearing was in a few weeks. It was a very simple straitforward modification & projected to be 5 hrs. No witnesses. Unexpectedly out of nowhere he demands $12500 within 2 days or threatened to quit.It was unjustified & I felt taken advantage of by his "good Ole boy" routine. So needless to say he withdrew last minute. I had no time to replace him & he ignored my request to at least send over the <Court Prep work>-documents-notes-exhibits...or at least something that he did to use in the hearing since I suddenly found myself unrepresented. I knew I was in trouble from the beginning when my adversaries attorney had him eating out of her hand right from the start! However, nobody wants to start over with someone new. I should have followed my gut.

I retained (McKean Smith) Annelisa's services the day I met her for initial consultation. She was referred to me by a common friend. Annelisa worked with me from start to finish on my divorce, to end my 21 years of marriage, that should've been settled amicably from the get-go, as all I wanted was for there to be no disruption to my kids' (2 teens) lives at home from the parenting plan, and I was ready to give up my house, and 100% child support, and allow both kids to stay with their mother 24/7 for that, with me visiting kids at their home only to care for them when they wanted me to, no different than our usual routine. Yet, somehow conspiracies prevailed and it ended up as a contested divorce that dragged on for over a year, with me having to defend against numerous baseless accusations. It was a real life nightmare to say the least, but fortunately I had my kids and the truth to bank on, and had all the documented evidence needed to fend off every single unfounded accusation, and that's all Annelisa needed to get me the exact results I wanted, with the only difference being that instead of my kids living with their mother in the home 24/7 I now have sole custody of both my kids and they now live with me in the house 24/7, with zero disruption to their lives from the divorce. Annelisa will fight for you and get you the results you deserve. She is very busy, but made time for a 1 on 1 meeting anytime I felt the need for some assurance. Heather, the paralegal, was also very pleasant to work with, and was prompt at responding to my questions. In court, at status check meetings, Annelisa was very clear and concise in her choice of words, and spoke with full confidence, no matter what cheap tactics the opposing counsel used in front of the judge to try to scare me. Annelisa has the experience, is very skilled in her profession, and is very honest and upfront about the possible outcomes. Each time I felt drained and wanted to discuss updates and meet with Annelisa, I left feeling assured and confident that she will get me the best result possible. At one point I felt so frustrated and drained from dealing with the contested divorce that I was willing to give in to all the demands from the opposing party, but Annelisa advised me why that was not a good option, and boy am I glad I listened to her! Annelisa doesn't play any games with the opposing party. She is very straightforward and deals with the opposing party in a very professional manner, and will get you the best results you deserve. For me, that was zero disruption to my kids' lives at home after divorce, and that's exactly what she delivered. My 2 teens are now living with me in my house 24/7, and my life with my kids is as good as it can get... very much at peace! One other thing that stood out in my interactions with Annelisa is that she was always conscious of my financial constraints and questioned the need whenever I requested a 1 on 1 meeting, warned me about additional cost when discussing independent 3rd party services, suggested alternatives to getting the same outcome as a trial, without actually taking it to trial, and even worked with the opposing counsel and the judge to minimize my costs by avoiding certain in-person meetings when the divorce was being finalized. If you have the truth and facts on your side, and anticipate a contested divorce, retaining the services of McKean Smith could end up being the best decision you make. It was for me!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
