I recently obtained Mr. Meadows in a domestic dispute. I had consulted him early on in my case and he failed to inform me of my legal options and dismissed my grievances. This lack of action would lead to an arrest and Mr Meadows was hired to defend. He never looked at none of my information and based on information from the prosecution deemed me not credible. I never got to tell my side of the story. I was discouraged by Mr Meadows from making a statement to the court and discouraged from reporting crimes committed against me . I signed a plea deal after I became fearful of his motives. He did a very good job of telling me what my charges were. He had nothing to say for my defense other than 2 things that public record. It was the most helpless feeling being in another state, hearing lies and misinformed judgements of my intent by the plaintiff and the judge and my lawyer does nothing to defend me against them. I had lived my entire life being a good man and left that state ashamed and $21000 in the hole with weeks of time lost that could have been avoided. I dont like reviews and dont do them often. He didnt even bother to learn my name.

This lawyer tried to take me to jail because I would not sign an unfair settlement. My own lawyer said I would go to jail. I said ok. I had to give $3,000 to this lawyer so I would not go to jail. I only WONDER what would have happened if I had not had my tax returns. He would ask a judge to send me to jail. He took the judges decision first and said I would go to jail. This is trickery. It caused the divorce to stretch out for another whole year. He wanted to do a lot of mean things and he did. The judge said I did not have to pay my husband's legal fees but yet he was able to garnish money from my bank account. Money that I needed to support myself. He did not care he wanted all the money he could squeeze out of me. Why not one of his more afluent clients. Does he have afluent clients? He is financialy driven and iif you cannot pay he is going to deny representation to clients if they lose the ability to pay when they need him most.

Mark is a great attorney to have. He was very professional, knowledgeable, and helped make my situation that was very complicated and painful into the best interest of me and my daughter. I appreciated the quick responses and efforts made to make this all a less stressful situation for all involved. All my questions were always answered and I felt like someone had my back the whole time. I really appreciate Mark and I would highly recommend him.

Will not return phone calls or emails. Completed petition and parenting plan. Just needs to be filed for over a month now. My children have since been moved away to another city. This process which should have only taken a month, which he stated would be "filed by the end of the week", has taken 4 months so far. I paid my retainer and I am extremely frustrated at this point. I do not have time to be wasting.

He genuinely seemed to care and was confident in his knowledge of the whole divorce process. He always gave me good and fair advice and worked to resolve my issues with compassion. I felt well represented and even though it was a very horrible phase in my life, I felt like I was in good hands and that he, Abby, and Thomas were in my corner and truly have empathy for their clients. Honestly there were times when I didn’t get much communication, but it’s the sad thing about abuse…..there’s ALOT of it unfortunately and I know he was covered up. I am so grateful for their help and I’m now free to be “me” again.

Miss Ward settled my case for pennies on the dollar. After the settlement I learned that the insurance company was authorized to pay $25,000.00 without representation and without going to court to settle the case. I know this to be true because my co worker, who was also injured, accepted the settlement and declined Miss Ward's offer to represent her.

Ashley was a great lawyer. She represented my divorce cases in div 9 and after the judge made his ruling we found a mistake that needed to be immediatedly corrected. Ashley stayed in the courthouse with me until we were able to see the judge again so that he could make the corrections on the divorce decree. I thank her for being patient, especially when one doesn't know in's & out's about the law.

I have seen Ms. Myers work hard in the interest of the children that she has been entrusted into her care. She did not allow people to intimidate her with the cancel culture that is prevalent in today's society. She kept her focus solely on the welfare of the children involved in this unfortunate situation. I admire the depth of understanding she puts forth to make sure that she is representing the children to the best of her ability. IF you want the best for any children involved you will find no one better.

Shari Myers is a person that slinks between courtrooms in the hopes she can attach herself to whatever case is around, and irreparably damage lives and then move on to the next family she can extort money from. Shari Myers only cares for herself and enriching herself off the misfortunes of others. It is a hideous representation she carries. Shari Myers represents what is the worst of the legal profession. Someone that claims this high moral superiority but deep down is as fake and as morally bankrupt as one can be. Myers profits off the misfortune of individuals during very contested divorces and child custody issues. Very sensitive and emotionally draining issues but She only cares of enriching herself and nothing of the clients or children she is somehow tasked to provide counsel to. Myers is someone who decided she wasn’t going to hear from both sides during a contested issue. Does that sound like someone impartial and fair?? how can you make a life altering decision and not speak to one party involved? She is a hideously inept incompetent who surrounds herself with other gross incompetents. Beware of Fake, incompetent Shari Myers.

The lack of communication between her and clients is appalling. Binkley would never answer calls, text, or emails. When we did get ahold of her, she would repetitively back track on her words. She was belittling, in efforts to have us see her way. She doesn't listen to clients or even care about their outcome, she lacked empathy and concerns after she had our money in hand. When we hired her we got to hear all the promises, how close her and the DA were. The night before court, she called and said she couldn't get what she had promised, and said we would have to hire another attorney to fight. We hired another attorney he was amazing did exactly what we ask and got us the outcome we had been promised by her. Just to let you know she promised she would send us all of our evidence, our notes, and everything we provided to her. Again a lie, she didn't even give it to our (good) attorney with his multiple pleas.

Hired Keenan Binkley through a different office in Dickson, Tn. I will not name that office because I believe they would of handled this in a more professional manner. I wrote her a deposit check and spoke with Binkley maybe a handful of times and a few text messages about my Divorce. For the past 2 months I have tried reaching out to her cell number and office for advice and questions about the divorce but not 1 reply back. If you need someone to represent you professionally I would not recommend Ms Binkley. You would be better off representing yourself. If you are able to contact her.... please let her know I no longer need her services.

I would not recommend William Pratt as a lawyer. I filed for divorce from a husband who was unfaithful and abusive. I asked for help to get my belongings and to have my ex husband pay for half of the divorce. He simply ignored my requests and allowed me to pay for the entire divorce to get it over with. If you want a lawyer is willing to work for justice, I would not ask him for help.

This attorney really doesn't know what she is doing. I was never informed of what was going on. She never seemed to have a plan. We were always on the defense in court. She never asked my wife any questions when she was on the stand. And after 3 years with no closer her law office informs me that my 2 inch file had been accidentally thrown away by cleaning crew or lost. Now I am starting over with a new attorney. Please beware.

We hired Mr. Herrera after a pleasant phone call to help my elderly mother with a landlord (slumlord). After paying his fee for a letter we had to seriously edit because it did not contain troubling elements regarding her landlord's negligence, he was difficult to reach and made excuses contrary to legal remedies we know existed. A month after the first letter, as we waited for the landlord to take action on his dilapidated house, I hired him to write a letter to a business competitor regarding his defamation and slander. I had to write the entire thing, including state and federal laws he was ignoring, as I'd already emailed him the laws and their corresponding precedents. Months later, after landlord had failed to live up to his own written promises, much less repair the house in a livable fashion -- which includes a failing heating and ductwork system -- Mr. Herrera told my mom to wait until winter before we could address the issue. Seriously? Seriously. We'd informed him, with photos, of this problem the PREVIOUS WINTER. To get that "answer," we had to call numerous times over the course of two weeks, finally stating "we'll have to hire a new attorney if we don't hear from you today." He took our money, wrote crappy letters, refused to any follow-up, and never stated fees for more action. Maybe he didn't want to take any action. Maybe he made his easy money and that was all he wanted. We paid for letters I could've written myself just to have his Esq. attached to them. Wasted six months and $800 which would've been better spent on a competent lawyer. Nothing has changed since we sadly chose Mr. Herrera to "represent" us.

I hired this attorney after my divorce. She recommended that I try to get full custody of my 3 children because it would increase my child support. She gave me the impression that this was a no-brainer. After weeks of depositions, hiring a Psychologist to perform a custody evaluation and 2 weeks sitting in a court room trial, all at her recommendation (Her web site says most of her cases go to trial) The Judge made no changes. I was left with hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorney fees. If she would have told me this was a remote possibility, I would have never moved forward.

I hired Lonon for a child custody issue. This was possibly the worst mistake I've ever made, bar NONE. Look, I've been in a small business for over 27 years, I've used attorneys before, I went through a fairly messy divorce 8 years ago, so I've used attorneys. This man is the worst. He wouldn't return calls. An example is my "X" was not abiding by a mediated settlement. I really needed to speak with him about things my "X" was doing with my son present. Not one time would this man take the time to do the professional, responsible, courteous way that you would think YOUR attorney would do. Not ONCE!!!!! So, I called this man 3 times and not one time did he have the courtesy to return a call, not ONCE. Finally I got a call from his paralegal, I guess, Judy. "oh, I see I've had a message that you tried to call me Mr. Kyte?". I was like uh wtf, I've not called you one time Judy. This is how this man operates. Took my $2000.00 refuses to provide me with a statement of services!!! Hey, we even provide this in an A/C service business, but apparently all rules of proper, courteous business practices have and are suspended with Mr. Lonon and his practice!!!! I would HIGHLY recommend to anyone STAY AWAY from this man. He is a Charlatan of the highest order, he is unethical to say the least!!! IMO, he is as close to a legal crook as one can, could possibly get!!! Yeah, he is this bad in my honest opinion. He has no responsibility towards his client, he has no respect for his client at all. He and I would assume many others like him, well they kind of forget who, how they have gotten to the place in life that they're in!!! It is from CLIENTS!!!!!!! Do they teach this stuff in Law School??? Do they teach this kind and type of approach. Yes, I'm filing a complaint in my state with the board of "Ethics & Professional Responsibility". May do no good, as it is other attorneys looking into other attorneys in how they act and behave. Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black, uh???? But, at least I've done something to stand up against this kind and type of unethical and unwarranted behavior from a person one hires to have their best interest at heart. Which in my case, this man clearly didn't have!!!!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
