From getting information incorrect on court documents, to being late to my remediation, this firm has not only dropped the ball on numerous occasions, but they market themselves as "top tier" legal firm and charge higher rates than competitors.
They have billed me when I wasn't able to contact their billing person and had to ask her to contact me (unethical tactics), and yes they have corrected it when I brought it to their attention, but the fact that they thought it was fair to charge for it in the first place, is eye opening.
They (Hembree Firm) have failed to send me important court documents that were essential to my defense, and at times, the paralegal completely forgot to pass important notes to my main lawyer. When I brought this to the attention of my lawyer, she said that I should take notes and forward them to her after speaking with the paralegal. So, with this firm, you have to double check what they do and help them connect the dots?
After my divorce was "finalized", my ex sent Hembree Law a child support check for me, and in return, I received a bill from Hembree Law in excess of another $200.00 for filing the check and another employee (names of Hembree employees charging fees are not people I have met or have knowledge of), racked time on the clock "discussing" my child support check with another paralegal. They are taking unnecessary / unrequested actions only to create extra charges.
I have been documenting their mistakes, and inappropriate charges to create a public social media post. When you hire an attorney, especially when your kids, house, and financials are on the line, it is fair expectation to want a firm that will be organized, punctual, ethical, and bill appropriately. I would not recommend Hembree Law Firm.
Allyson Swanson seems to have a great reputation, but when you sign Hembree as your representative, you are then passed on to an assigned lawyer or paralegal, and the experience is not pleasant. The outstanding reviews for Allyson, if you take a close look, are only for her volunteer work at schools etc.
Imagine showing up for your expensive mediation meeting with your lawyer and mediator, the clock strikes 9am, the room TV is on and the mediator is about to go live , and on billable hours, and your lawyer is not even present. (I have photos of me sitting at Hembree Law conference room at my scheduled mediation time, and my lawyer, Kathleen Brown, was not present).

Outstanding job on my behalf by Kathleen Brown, Jim Wilson and Amanda Mangrum. I faced a very aggressive, uncooperative, litigious opposition in my case. Mary Louise Phelps surpassed any expectations I had for my divorce attorney. Going through the proceedings was a very scary ordeal for me being that it involved money, businesses, and most importantly my two children. I was very nervous about being in the wrong hands. Terrible experience with Sarah particularly. My coparent withheld my ability to see my infant on multiple occasions, Sarah charged me for documentation that didn’t improve or remedy the situation; the coparent was not held accountable whatsoever. The response I received from filing the expensive paperwork Sarah’s firm advised was my coparent filing a false police report saying their vehicle was broken into implicating me for which I had proofs were 100% false (the vehicle was NOT broken into or tampered with and I was nowhere remotely close to area it was located at the time in question). I was required to meet at police stations following that accusation - know what the coparent showed up in?? The undamaged vehicle in question on the DAY FOLLOWING the accusation. (For the record, it’s supposed to be a crime in Texas to file a false police report). Again, none of it mattered when we *never made it to court* — saddled with $25k worth of representation debt (when the standard for family court settlements is ~$11k to my understanding), a hefty child support amount, and ONE day more than a standard possession as a non-custodial parent. I wrote her an angry, frustrated “who do you work for here?” email to which she felt the need to call me personally at 3 am having me tell her I thought she was the perfect person to help me with my situation or she would be resigning my case. Should’ve dropped her then and there. I’m an honorably discharged veteran, a former federal employee, an Eagle Scout, etc. I was up against someone with a an assault record. Continuously told her firm I wanted a 50/50 coparenting agreement and wasn’t trying to skirt child support because I didn’t think it would help my case. Not what was presented at the 2-3 court days we were supposed to have, I took off work for and made special arrangements for but didn’t actually “take.” We never made it to court - ended up in mediation with a RETIRED judge who didn’t read or pay any attention to the facts of the case whatsoever as his blanketed opening statement at mediation was - “I don’t care what the facts are here, I’m not taking any child away from his mother short of something drug related” - a determination based solely based on gender/sex. I did 90% of the talking during mediation; Sarah and her assistant sat there and barely spoke. I’m not an attorney. I didn’t get paid $25k to represent someone. Had no idea what I was doing. Sarah worked with the coparent’s attorney and came up with a 30+ page document that provides more coverage for my co-parent than me and I was billed for it; co-parent walked away from the case on a pro-bono basis. If I mess up, jail time and fines. If the co-parent messes up, there would be hefty court fees for me to enforce anything and then next to 0 repercussions for them. My coparent has been so empowered by how easy it was to walk over me that she has continued to violate the agreement (never missed a day with my son, coparent’s missed a plethora; coparent doesn’t send written updates when our circumstances change, I’ve had to; coparent moved outside the agreed upon living area, repercussions are supposed to be me becoming custodial, NOPE; coparent filed 2 more false police reports since implicating but not naming me to avoid harassment charges, nothing stopping them). If you’re a single father out there for any reason and are looking for help, know upfront no one (courts, attorneys, etc) cares about the dad’s rights or involvement in a child’s life. Since the resolution, I’ve struggled to make ends meet between the debts and my obligations. Think when I’m struggling to this degree that I can afford or would even bother going back to court to have my coparent “held accountable” for the violations?? Steer clear of Sarah’s firm; felt massively overcharged for the minimal support or intervention I received from them.

My divorce was a very difficult time and I was grateful that I was represented by Lawrence Behrmann. He prepared me for every step of the process and made sure he knew what my goals were and what was most important to me. He knew when to counsel and when to listen, and provided timely advice on a personal level in a manner above and beyond what he was paid to do. He was very available and there were many problems that I encountered after office hours that he was able to counsel me through in a timely manner. He was very judicious in the use of his time, and saved me a lot of money by knowing what was important to do and what things did not need to be researched more. He was able to finalize a very contentious divorce by requesting the right information at the right time, and that information allowed me to have more time with the children. I have worked with many attorneys in my career. David Kazen is a phenomenal attorney and very well versed in his career. He sees his clients a human beings and not as dollar signs like the majority of family lawyers out there. He knows the law and quotes case law when he drafts up a motion. She represented me in a CPS case in which I felt was unnecessary as I'm already doing very similar services for probation and a family member had made repeated reports. In a heartbeat I would Hire Mrs. Hightower again! Her work was exemplary. Her and her team are excellent communicators and tell you what she needs from you. Their response time to emails was usually within minutes, occasionally hours during the business week. Emails sent on weekends almost always had a response by 10am the following business day. When working with Mrs. Hightower and her team, I felt like I was a member of the team and not just the “paycheck”. During my time working with her team, I had one emotional reaction to something the other side had done, and her team was professional, courteous, and professional sympathetic during that event.
She does a fantastic job managing expectations and is very clear about what to expect. When I first spoke with Mrs. Hightower, my case was in another county and needed transferring. She said that we could not begin work on the case until it was transferred, and true to her word she got my case transferred and the first hearings scheduled as promptly as possible within the time frame that she predicted. I personally had two hearings with her- Temporary Orders and Final Orders hearings. During Temporary Orders she was honest about what to expect and that I would likely only get temporary custody of one of my three children, but we were trying for all three due to the really high bar we had to reach. This is ultimately what happened. When the other side refused to sign the temporary orders, she was quick to file a motion to admit into record and get signed by the judg. During Final hearings she stated that the bar to meet our desired end state was much lower and had a much higher chance of success given the information, evidence, and testimony. We were granted custody of all three of my children. Through all of it, in every in-person meeting and conference call she was always clear: We can be as prepared as we can be, and its still up to the Judge.
As a Father in Texas, I had a very low probability of being granted custody. I set out with the intent of doing everything Mrs. Hightower asked me to do, providing every document she asked for, and working as a member of the team; this was the best way to be successful - and it worked. If anyone were to ask me what advice to give when working with Mrs. Hightower it is this - be calm, collected, and pro-active. Do everything you can to control your emotions. Provide everything she asks for. Listen to her when she tells you what to expect. Always remember that despite whatever happens, and everything you have done to be successful, it’s still up to the judge. Mrs. Hightower and team (I can’t name you here, but you know who you are), THANK YOU!
