This attorney got more than $3000 from my pocket in last than 2 weeks. Although, he did not do anything. He just kept asking for money and money. I found another attorney and he was able to work on my divorce for less than that. Be careful with this man.

Brent was my attorney through a difficult divorce. My ex-husband was an unwilling participant in the marriage AND the divorce. Not wanting to participate in the divorce made him difficult to negotiate with. Brent was able to see through his stalling tactics and eventually, we were able to force the divorce issue. Brent was effective in communicating with the narcissist who was my husband. It still took a while, but I was able to get out of the relationship with my dignity intact and with everything I wanted and needed. I am satisfied and grateful for Brent's experience and highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for an attorney who finds themselves working with a difficult partner.

I have him help me with my pro se order to show cause, He volunteered through the court system to help those who represented themselves. He was trying to get the other party to listen to my suggestions for settlement, giving me advice, and being on my side when you really need someone to be there for you, even if you are presenting yourself.

If I could do a zero star: I would. I am writing this review because I feel a moral obligation to warn people about trusting this law firm. From the outset, it is deeply concerning that the attorney failed to prioritize my case by neglecting to thoroughly review the information provided by the guardian ad litem. This negligence reflects a lack of professionalism and diligence on their part. By disregarding crucial documentation that could have supported my case, they effectively hindered my ability to present a strong argument in court. Furthermore, the attorney's consistent denial of my requests to submit important documents is nothing short of unacceptable. As a client, I have the right to expect prompt and efficient service, especially when it comes to gathering evidence. The attorney's failure to prioritize my needs and instead divert their attention to unnecessary communication with the opposing party's attorney is a clear indication of their lack of commitment and disregard for my case. Equally troubling is the attorney's attempt to pass me off to other attorneys under the guise of providing them with "experience." This is a direct betrayal of my trust and confidence in their abilities. When I hired this attorney, I did so with the expectation that they would personally handle my case and provide the necessary expertise. Instead, they attempted to pawn me off onto less experienced attorneys, essentially treating my situation as a learning opportunity at my expense. The sense of bias that I felt from the beginning of my case is deeply distressing. It is the duty of any attorney to approach each case with objectivity and a commitment to ensuring their client's rights are protected. However, it appears that my attorney failed to uphold this fundamental principle. As a result, i was forced to constantly prove my worth as a fit mother, adding unnecessary stress and burden to an already difficult situation. I would have never hired anyone from this law firm after my initial experience with Britt Beckstrom. However, after moving on and hiring Brian Eggleston, he moved to this law firm and my experience with Brian was even worse than my experience with Mr Beckstom.

My mother has used Scott for a long time and never had much of an issue, HOWEVER...I retained him in January of 2023 for a child protective order I had filed on behalf of my son against my ex, and in court, despite the overwhelming evidence, he more or less just sat there and did nothing which allowed my ex to get it dismissed. Fast forward to now (December 2023) and I have filed to gain full custody of my son, called Scott again more due to history to see if he'd be willing to take the case, said he would but we'd need to get the hearing date changed due to him not being available that day, ok that's fine, we also had a verbal agreement between us directly that he was willing to wait on payment for retainer so we could get the money, but he would start on everything right away, upon attempting 3 DIFFERENT TIMES to come in and sign the retention paperwork, I was turned away by paralegals that "needed to talk to him first" about what? I made the agreement with him, not with a paralegal. Finally was able to come in to sign the papers, but I was told by Josie that he "needed everything up front first" 100% contrary to what we agreed to, and that "HE was the one who said it" yet refused to ask him with me standing there to confirm, as he came out of his office and saw me sitting there, and to this day still have not gotten a return email or phone call to confirm or deny any of this Like others have said, if you want to not be jerked around by this firm, then don't bother even talking to them, and they've missed out on a retainer and a guaranteed case win that would bolster their reputation Oh well 🤷‍♂️

She is a good honest person but she is an unavailable attorney. She doesn't dedicate any time to her Law Practice (run by herself and one other person). Michelle was impossible to reach, she often would be unavailable for a week at a time if not longer. Rarely answered emails or phone calls, her work ethic just isn't there. Unresponsive to myself and to the opposing council and others involved in my case. I almost missed a hearing (amoung other things) due to her only working one day a week. Hiring an attorney is so stressful and Michelle will only add to that stress, if your looking for an attorney that will work and help your case progress please look elsewhere. I don't ever want anyone else to go through the stress of working with an attorney who is never present.

Working with Diana and her assistant made a very difficult experience much easier for me. Diana took time to understand my situation and find the best solutions. Throughout the process, she communicated consistently and I never felt "out of the loop" or wondered what would be happening next. She wasapproachable and compassionate. I would absolutely recommend her to someone looking for help with a divorce or other family related legal matter.

I hired Diana a few years ago and put her on a retainer to help with family law issues pertaining to child custody. She helped me understand the law in the State of Utah and how it applied to my situation. Diana is an empathic listener who explains the law in understandable terms. She is prompt in her communications and always asks what the overall goal is for each call. I felt very empowered after each time I communicated with her. When I set out to find an attorney to represent me in my divorce, I knew I was very interested in the collaborative process, but I knew nothing about it and if was the best route to take. It ALL felt overwhelming and scary. Minutes after my general inquiry to the Utah Association of Collaborative Professionals, Diana reached out to me with information about the collaborative process. I called her almost immediately. She was generous with her time and knowledge, helping me get clear and feel a little less anxious about the process. Needless to say, I hired her. Throughout the process, Diana listened, was responsive (which was SUPER important to me), compassionate, competent and straight forward. I felt I could trust her and knew she had my back. When things got tense she did her best to diffuse things, but when it was necessary she got tough. I would absolutely recommend the collaborative process and I would absolutely recommend hiring Diana.

My fiancé hired Mary Bevan to help her with a custody matter. After the first hearing we had concerns with Mary's approach and confidence in the court room, after the 2nd hearing we realized she was as good as having no legal counsel. She has no control whatsoever in the court room and she allowed the apposing lawyer to walk all over her. It got to the point where it seemed like Mary didn't believe my fiancé and constantly kept telling her to be honest in order for her to be able to help. My fiancé never lied and was honest from the start. We ended up firing her and hiring a new lawyer. It took the new lawyer 1 hearing to get the case resolved, Mary had 7 months and didn't do anything.

I found Pearson Butler via MetLife legal plan. Connected with Russ to get our family trust in place. Straight forward to complete, no complaints there. Reached back out to Russ about a completely separate matter unrelated to estate planning. His response was "I do not practice law in this area and thus, have not idea." I guess I just had more expectation than a lazy response with typos. Too much to ask if there's someone he can put me in contact with? I will be moving on from Pearson Butler and find another firm to do estate planning in the future.

...Greg Wall’s office shouts, “Get the hell out!” Unprofessional: Stood me up in court. Refused calls. Lost paperwork repeatedly, until I started emailing instead. Unapologetic: Wasted the entire time until, on the last day, I switched to Scott Brown and Brian Coutts who won $200,000 in a short period of time for about the same cost. Greg Wall made NO effort until it came time to collect his $30,000+ for doing nothing. I would love to meet these other people who gave him 5 stars. I suspect they’re members of his church ward.

Greg represented me on my divorce modification. He did a wonderful job representing me. He was very clear in where I stood and rather than making any promises he just got the job done. His experience shows in the way he handled my case. My x-wife's attorney was very difficult to deal with and rather than thumping his chest and making matters worse he handled her in a very cool and calm matter. Greg did everything he could to avoid going to trial and he succeded not only in that outcome, but getting everything resolved fairly. I was very pleased with the way everything was settled. Kudos also to his assistant Victoria. She was extremely helpful. I highly recommend using Wall and Wall.

This one star review is for PGAL, Sam Sorensen. Overcharged for rediculous items, and added no value. Minimal effort to collect a check, and poor judgement. In the end, God knows. Thank heavens for Anna Trupp, our custody evaluator. She came through for us in the end. Think about a custody evaluator over a PGAL, is my recommendation. Especially if you have parents on the other side involved in various versions of substance abuse. It’s not just clients that feel this way, it’s attorneys in the industry that see his lack of effort, as well.

Russell took my case and then took a very circuitous approach to resolving what (turned out to be in someone else's hands) a slam dunk resolution, only to announce that he was quitting the law. He then charged me his full rate to spend many hours transferring the case to my new counsel, who looked over Russell's work unable to understand much of his strategy. The ethics of taking my case knowing he was preparing to quit law (he's apparently since returned) and then changing me plenty for his decision, are deeply troubling to me. I cannot recommend Russell Gray.

Based on my consultations with them, Jaclyn and JR Law Group have some serious issues. Before you ever consider retaining this firm, take your time to read their draconian (excessively severe) fee agreement. The retainer and fee agreement for this firm is the worst retainer and fee agreement I’ve ever seen. It speaks to the kind of one-sided relationship a client would need to engage in with Jaclyn and her firm. I’m happy to share a few details, but when I very respectfully called to discuss what I found to be a one-sided agreement, Jaclyn called me back in a very aggressive, rude, condescending way, and told me if I had questions about her fee agreement that I basically needed to go away. That’s how she’ll handle conflicts with you. It’s her way or the highway, without consideration for you. By way of contrast, when I spoke with a very seasoned attorney, with extremely high reviews, about two concerns re: their contract, he was calm, kind, listened, offered their reasoning and we came to a mutual agreement. That’s how it’s supposed to be done Jaclyn and Elenia!! So here are a few details from the agreement: They require an extremely high retainer for the work considered. Theirs was more than twice as high as anyone else’s and 3X higher than Elenia said the main part of the case would cost. Unlike every law firm I’ve ever heard of or encountered, their fee agreement states that their “billing rates serve only as a BENCHMARK, and not the sole determinant of the value of the firms services for the client for billing purposes” and the primary attorney, at her sole discretion, can decide the value of the services. What that means is you don’t pay their hourly rate — you pay what they demand. That’s absurd and abusive!! There is no provision in the agreement for the client to review bills and let the firm know if they do not believe that the bill is accurate or if they have a question in the bill. Nothing. Rather than a fair provision to review your bill, it says that outstanding balances are “due UPON RECEIPT of the invoice” and provides the firm the right to auto debit the client’s credit card whatever amount they deem appropriate. They bill every two weeks. Imagine that you get a bill every two weeks and you have no time to review it and it is due the moment that you get it and they can auto charge your credit card whatever they decide you owe. Again, excessive. They have the right to quit your case, “at any time” according to their fee agreement, but specifically if you don’t forfeit your right to take time to review your bill because then you wouldn’t be paying immediately. If you had a billing or other issue and Jaclyn or Elenia were unreasonable in resolving it and your only option was to go to court (which is hopefully unlikely but it exists in the realm of possibility) they say that you must pay them while it’s being litigated and you grant them the right to lien your funds or property. It’s paragraph 9. Read that again: While you’re protecting your rights, they can lien your funds or property. In my interaction with Jaclyn, it’s clear she is a very high conflict person. So your chances of resolving a disagreement with her or her firm (Elenia hides behind her) are likely slim. Her contract leaves you with ZERO power in the dynamic. I believe that’s how she wants it. I’ve spent two decades mentoring tens of thousands of women and empowering them. This firm is not for you if you want to stand in your power and have a fair, trustworthy, equitable relationship with your lawyer.

I recently worked with Justin Starr and D.Andrew Lajoie on a business/personal matter. They are both very professional and experienced attorneys and both were very responsive to the issues. I was highly impressed and I would most definitely recommend either Justin or Andrew. They would be the first two attorneys that I would call if I needed legal assistance.

Jordane is a superhero, she answered all my questions before I even had a chance to ask them. I appreciate how well the team took care of us and how quickly they got us what we needed. If I ever have issues in the future, I know exactly who to call. Bonus, this team is affordable and not out to make you broke. Again, thank you Jordane and Matt.

Matt, is truly one of the Last True Regulators. "It was a clear black night, a clear white moon" 😏 Anyways, seriously Matt saved me from doing so very long years down at the Point of the Mountain 20 years ago. I took his help and cleaned up my act put in the work and never looked back. Then 20 years after he saved me he put back on his Superman cape, and saved my son from being caught up in his own drama. He staff is courteous and helpful. They keep you informed if you take the time to stay and keep in touch. Matt listens to you and then explains the best possible choices and outcomes always having your rights and freedom's in his mind. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND HIRE MATT TO REPRESENT YOU. It will be a solid decision you won't regret. Thanks Matt and Team.

Laziest attorney on earth. Jaime charges for time that she has no proof of. She files paperwork incorrectly. She's drunk on the job. She cancels constantly. She does not answer phone calls. She inherited from her mom and dad and thinks that she doesn't have to earn her way to success. Spoiled foolish girl. Do not use her as an attorney. She's even refered me to her friends during the divorce to try to make her reality friends money . She even denied payments and told people that clients are not paying her. Total fraud and needs to get investigated. Nothing more to say. Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible Horrible

She did all of the final documentation completely opposite of what my ex and I agreed upon. Even my ex was insulated by my attorneys stupidity (Jaime Topham) . She copied someone else's documentation and put my name on it. She charged me $4,000 to do everything wrong, in which we didn't find out for weeks after the documentation was officially through the legal system. She even admitted showed up drunk.

I worked with McKenzie for several months. She is nice and helpful, but i was disappointed in her grasp or recall of the details of my case. I should have recognized the signs. I corrected the details in the case many times, in fact each document sent to me for approval needed corrections. At my hearing, while the opposing counsel was dressed professionally, spoke confidently and knew all his facts, McKenzie did not meet those same standards of professionalism. In her presentation of my case she often looked up and to the right, a sign that she was trying to remember or trying to formulate what to say. She even stated some facts of the case incorrectly in front of the judge. Part of our request was allowed to go to trial (which my ex wanted completely dismissed) and part of the opposing party's request was granted. The outcome wasn't all bad, but I was disappointed in the way she represented me. I spent a lot of extra money correcting the documents over and over.

Utah law does allow for an annulment, but it is very challenging and very rarely granted. They are complex cases and the rules are very precise on what is allowed for annulment. I had a complex issue that I strongly believed constituted an annulment vs a divorce. Justin Ashworth conferred with me directly on multiple occasions and advised at the onset of the case that this would be a challenge and that there is no guarantee the Judge would grant an annulment and possibley make me choke down a divorce. I was worried as the Judge advised on preliminary hearing that he had never granted an annulment and wondered why a divorce would not apply., Justin Ashworth did his research in case law, conferred with me in person to obtaini exhibits and listen to my story. He developed a game plan on how to proceed throughout the process. Practiced with me and put together the case. Justin Ashworth was able to eloquently answer that question the Judge had asked why an annulment and not divorce. I was granted my annulment. This was indeed a challenging case and I am very pleased will the patience, professionalism work that Justin Ashworth provided. I hope I never have to use him again but if I had another family law issue, I definitely would not hesitate to use him again.

I paid him $2500 initially to look into any appeals available to concerning a DCFS support decision affecting my daughter. Decision was made by an "administrative law judge" without a notice or opportunity to appear. There is a reason this clown doesn't have an office or a way to contact him - he doesn't want to be found. When I attempt to fire him for doing virtually nothing my certified mail to his website address was returned as non-deliverable. I filed a complaint with the Utah State Bar and he made false statements and submitted bogus billing charges mostly for "internet searches" at $225 an hour. Lazy and incompetent!

I was hit with a false child abuse allegation at the commencement of my divorce and thought my life was over. Things were a total disaster. DCFS had substantiated the false abuse, a TRO prevented me from having any contact with my kids and they were being badly alienated with the help of a biased therapist. Eric fought hard for me and we accomplished the impossible. I now enjoy regular visitation and all that drama is behind me. Eric is an excellent attorney for someone who is up against the ropes. If you are looking for a law firm that will represent you with high integrity, professionalism, and transparency, I highly recommend Wiser & Wiser. I used a different firm before switching to Wiser and Wiser. I am extremely grateful I made the switch. Not only do they have an extraordinary level of legal knowledge and detail, the Wisers also have a keen understanding of the analytical, strategic, and political landscape of legalese. I have also been impressed with their team approach and how they work concurrently to ensure there are no gaps in casework. I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude for this law firm that has restored my confidence in the legal system. One star is too many, zero should be an option. The amount of damage Tamara did to my case is unforgivable. She made glaring errors, completely forgot to file orders, would ignore emails/calls/texts for months and months on end, and gave advice that has harmed the lives of many, including children. She made no efforts to take accountability for what she did or try and fix the damage done, withdrawing when the full scope of her mistakes became apparent. It will take years to attempt to undo what she did, and more money than I can imagine. Tamara should not be a licensed attorney. She has been reported to the office of professional misconduct with hundreds of pages of documented evidence. I will take all necessary steps to hold her accountable for her actions so she cannot do this to another unsuspecting client. Do not consider her in your search for an attorney if you are looking for competency and professionalism, or even just an attorney you’d like to be able to get a hold of within a month two. There are bad attorneys, then there are attorneys who will ruin your life. Tamara is the latter.

Scott was my lawyer to handle my child custody case. He seemed more interested in being the middle man and being fair to both sides and have both sides happy then what was in my best interest or what i wanted. My ex-husband would agree to a timeline for a specific item, then not complete or stick to what he had agreed to. Scott was unwilling to try to enforce/or bring up that my exhusband stick to the agreements he had made, saying "let"s give him another (and another and another...) chance. Scott offered to cancel out a judgement that i had been awarded in court for my exhusband to pay, without consulting me. He stated this would help make the other side happy and more willing to work with us. When we did go to court, Scott would offer to write up the papers on what was decided and turn them in. I would get the papers months later. This ended up costing me money, since i could have been recieving money/judgements from the time the papers were turned in, which should have been soon after the court date. i was not happy with how Scott represented me and I would not recommend him to someone else.

I initially hired Katie after meeting and feeling a positive connection with her, as well as knowing she had the full backing of Rebecca Long Okura, who has a good reputation. I was in a 20 year marriage that had become controlling and quite rapidly deteriorated. My then husband and I had made the decision in 2001 that I would stay at home with our daughter when she was born. I had no income of my own whatsoever. I had spent time helping out with my dad when he moved here to Utah in 2014, and became his main caretaker after a stroke in 2016 when I was given his power of attorney until his passing in late 2018. Our daughter graduated high school in 2019. I was given an ultimatum and forced into being the one to file for divorce in early 2020. At the time that I hired her, I felt that Ms. McLain was really going to go to bat for me, as a 20 year unemployed, 55 year old woman, facing off against a husband who made an average of $25,000 per month and had been with the same company for 25 years, and would continue to have that earning capacity. There are a lot of things that did not play in my favor, the pandemic being one of them, and an attorney that wasn’t aggressive and assertive enough to fight for what was really right for me is another. In the middle of April 2020 we attended 9 brutal hours of mediation and I was convinced to settle for nearly $100K less equity than what a mortgage broker’s comps placed the value of the marital home at, half the monthly alimony asked, no equity in several marital assets, no accounting for my future, my health, my children. Basically, I got hosed. My ex was having the best month of his career to date (I found out later from a co-worker) while he told the mediator that he was going to lose $150K of income in 2020 and was not made to show proof of current income. The best month of his career to date meant something like $40K. In April of 2020, mid pandemic. He had probably the best year of his life, and I paid Ms. McLain nearly $15,000 to walk away with so much less than I deserved. And now, to top it all off he just bought, in August of 2021, a nearly million dollar house without even having sold the previous one. Clearly he has had a change for the better, while less than 1 1/2 years ago he claimed he would not be able to afford to pay alimony and survive himself. I feel that if Ms. McLain had really gone to bat for me, she would have advised me to wait for mediation to take place, even though it was to the point where I just wanted it to be over. Or at least advised me to call his bluff and say I wanted to go to trial and see what might have happened. All of the hours that I spent going over finances, bank and credit card statements, etc, just for her office to charge me to go over the same things, nickel and diming me over emails and phone calls with me and his attorney, even months after the divorce was final. I am absolutely devastated. All I want to do is get healthy and buy my own little home, start fresh, but I’m still paying medical bills from last year, and am struggling with financing because I don’t make enough. I am left feeling like I should have hired a different attorney, and maybe will have to now, even though I can’t afford to, to get what I should have gotten in the first place if Ms. McLain had lived up to what she had promised from the start. Bottom line, I would not hire her again, and I really would not recommend her or her firm, as I was told that everything ultimately went through Ms. Long Okura, if you really need someone to fight for you. I feel like there are better attorneys and better firms out there.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
