Steer clear of this firm, especially if you are a healthcare provider. Refused to answer or return calls for years. Yeah years! Assistant takes the call and you never get called back. I see we are not the only ones who they ghosted when it was time to be paid. Finally got Kurt on the phone about a claim that was now 5 years old without payment. He decided that calling "us" the healthcare provider, ambulance chasers and telling us to sue him for the money owed was the right way to go. Good luck!

Phil Bareck went above and beyond for me. I was injured at work and felt I was treated unfairly while out on leave. Phil listened to me every step of the way and fought a fight most wouldn’t. It was a very long and tiring battle but he never once gave up. He kept me in the loop and asked my opinions on everything. If you are looking for someone to fight for you Phil is your guy!!

Absolutely the best legal experience I've heard from anyone and arrival at justice in a difficult case. My company used an IME which lied. It was easily shown to the arbitrator and Mrs. Bridgette Kolb ensured justice and a fair outcome, recovering all of my lost workers compensation and covering a partial loss of my body due to the injury. I could not imagine a more effective or elite attorney.

Under the circumstances, he stopped and listened. The full case was a bit much. He looked into the person and the case. He did battle with the legal system for the person not the crime. He looked into the persons past and set them up for the best future based on what the person showed him. I was amazed at his approach to the situation. He looked for facts that most people overlook. Prompt, respectful, knowledgeable, professional and caring. You will not find a more effective attorney.

When we were looking for a lawyer to represent us against a copyright troll in CA, I was at first hesitant to contact Billy as he was in Chicago. So I called a few others first and Billy last. Billy was by far the most reasonable and knowledgeable about the industry. He did a superb job at getting a settlement that we could live with. He spent quite a bit of time going back and forth with the troll and us. I believe he does this work out of principle as he surely spent far more time than the fee we paid him. When we called Billy, we were feeling afraid, tense, and extremely nervous. Within minutes, Billy made us feel secure and relaxed because we knew he would be protecting us from that point on. He lived up to his reputation and we cannot thank him enough. Strangely, I feel like I owe him more money for how much work he did to represent us. How many times has anyone hired a lawyer and felt that way? From our experience with Billy and his caring nature, I truly consider him a friend and hope to someday payback his kindness,

I was extremely fortunate to have found Ben Kailin and Firm Equity after being named in a Malibu Media Lawsuit. After contacting a few other law firms, I felt Ben seemed to really understand how to deal with Malibu Media. He took on my case and was able to negotiate a settlement I could live with. The initial offer from the plaintiff was way more than I could afford to pay. It took him several weeks of back and forth negotiating before he was able to bring the settlement amount down to an acceptable level. I’m not sure the modest fee he charged even covered the time he spent on my case. He is truly the friendliest yet fiercest lawyer around. If you are ever unlucky enough to be involved in something like this, definitely call Ben and Firm Equity.

Ben spoke to me on the phone and answered every single question I had before I even retained his services. His generosity with information, his frankness and honesty, and his genuine desire to help is what makes Ben a great attorney in my opinion. I was dealing with a person who expressed understanding and not just a 'matter of fact' attitude. He was always accessible via email as well as on the phone. He really went to bat for me, and he helped me settle at a price I could achieve. I owe many thanks to Ben for his work and attitude.

Benjamin has turned gloom and despair into instant relief. I had hired an attorney for a copyright infringement case (multiple infringements) who did a whole lot of nothing. So little of nothing that the accusers had plenty of time to get my real name and serve a civil court summons to me at my home. I had to hire another lawyer and this time I wanted to make sure I got someone who had the right stuff. Enter the Benjamin. Not only did he cover the basics of what needed to be done and the strategy needed in my case, he also made it a point to treat you as a real person with real feelings. Attentive. He understood the misery and dread, and that no one wants to file bankruptcy over something like this, especially when you are over 40. He negotiated a reduced settlement that was a pleasant surprise and made the process of paying the settlement extremely easy. No hidden costs. He’s always in communication with you so you don't feel like you are in a long line waiting to get served. He does what he says he is going to do and makes you feel relaxed through the whole process. I am extremely happy with Benjamin’s service and HIGHLY recommend him. Worth every single penny. Can’t speak high enough. You are in good hands with him.

I was charged/framed for a serious crime, my family and I were at a loss as to how we would find a good lawyer. Everyone thought that I would go to prison. My family found Joshua B. Kutnick, and they hired him. Frankly, I was not certain that he would be able to win my case, yet I waited for the results. Prior to the trial date, he invested/worked as though he was a brother or father to me, within this cruel world I realized that humility still lives. On the day of trial, my nerves were wrecked. He went in and WOW! my case was dismissed, with no penalties. I was speechless, as was everyone else with the results. That was all due to the hard work and prowess of Joshua Kutnick, this honorable man has 18 years of experience under his belt. I normally don’t write lengthy reviews, however, I know that nobody’s absolutely perfect, everyone faces is accused once, if you’re charged, the most beneficial things you could have would be this lawyer. Thus, use him to your benefit. Do not assign a lawyer with a lack of background/experience who will only feed you empty promises, to get hold of your money, which will result in a bad outcome. Best of luck to you all.

I am posting this on behalf of my sister, Krystyna. I had the privilege of working with Mr. Brian Hurst and his partner, Ms. Olga Allen, for the past eight years. I hired them to handle a very contentious divorce, and it was the best decision I ever made. After experiencing frustration with two ineffective and non-transparent lawyers, working with Olga and Brian restored my faith that lawyers can be trusted, compassionate, and genuinely committed to their clients' best interests rather than financial gain. Ms. Allen carefully prepared the documents for our numerous court appearances, while Mr. Hurst presented and litigated the case. Their work was exemplary—organized, thorough, and meticulously detailed. Mr. Hurst's presentations to the judges (even through several changes) were clear, data-driven, convincing, eloquent, and highly effective. When the first court decision was appealed by the opposing side, Mr. Hurst and Ms. Allen once again collected relevant facts, prepared detailed written presentations, and engaged in skillful court negotiations, resulting in a favorable judgment from the Appeal Court. Their proficiency in multiple languages was an additional benefit, as it helped me overcome my limitations in spoken English, especially during stressful court questioning. I highly recommend Mr. Hurst and Ms. Allen to anyone, particularly those who feel their case is hopeless or that lawyers are taking advantage of them. You will be pleasantly surprised by their dedication and effectiveness. At the end of this painful divorce process, I feel that Olga and Brian are not just my saviors but also dear friends.

As a student without significant cash flow, she immediately made me feel comfortable and was willing to work with me financial-wise, which was so awesome. Rima the epitome of professionalism, kind, but is 'no nonsense' when representing her clients. Although the case did not turn out as (anyone) had expected, I couldn't have had the great successes I did if it weren't for Rima and her partner Yusra. She can get stuff done...and quickly. Rima takes the time to understand the details of your case and has an in-depth understanding of higher-education law. After an initial discussion of the problem I was relieved to find out that Rima concentrated her practice on representing faculty Rather than institutions. She was excellent at responding to attempts by university lawyers to bully and intimidate me, and in making sure that they respond to the concerns I raised. In the end, the settlemnet Rima negotiated for me was over twice the amount that the university originally offered.

My experience/journey with Courtney Kelledes has been a pleasant and knowledgeable one. I contacted her for help with a years long ongoing situation which had been taken upon by other lawyers with no resolve. After explaining my situations and concerns she informed me that she would contact me after reviewing my info with her partners. I was contacted back shortly where she told me, while she could not make guarantees she and her partners did find merit in my cause, requests and ultimately my goal. From there Courtney laid out a precise step by step strategy with options for said steps. After that it was blast off as she went to work on my behave legally while thoroughly explaining steps, goals, expectations and timelines. She always kept an open ear to my concerns being that I had not had the best if not down right bad experience dealing with the various organizations in past attempts. Courtney always heard my voice and broke down said concerns with answers that I could understand as it applied to the law and my situation. She was always upfront as she pointed out the upside and possible downsides and always had a plan to address any and all possibilities. I appreciated Courtney’s patience with me as there were times due to the courts, law enforcement and past covid 19 fallout the results, while when realized were favorable, seemed to go beyond what would have been thought typical time wise which was frustrating but even then that’s when she showed her value and diligence as she never let department drag go without inquiry on my behalf. Courtney represented me and performed her duties as my lawyer as I always wanted from my initial attempts in the past but had not received from other lawyers before her. We ultimately achieved our goal with me gaining confidence that the legal system isn’t just one sided. Courtney Kelledes is a knowledgeable, down to earth, professional lawyer!

Robert was recommended to me by a friend, and my past experience with lawyers was not great, to say the least. I had always seen them (in injury circumstances) as someone who has the tools and vocabulary but essentially acts as a middle man that just takes most of what you are due. Not SO with Bob. After hiring, he was very upfront with me about the circumstances and scenarios that my motorcycle accident & claim would lead to, and he helped me every step of the way. By the grace of God, and his professional team we reached a result that was beyond satisfactory. He worked at a speed much faster than the state of California and was always one step ahead of everyone else. If you have need for a personal injury lawyer I can't recommend Bob enough. He's professional, timely, candid, and will work his hardest to make sure that you are fairly represented, and given your best chance when pitted against insurance companies and 3rd parties.

We hired Rob Robertson to handle some City of Chicago fines on property that our church holds. Attorney Robertson successfully resolved the issues, kept us informed of the progress, and offered to inspect land records to insure that some of the issues would not be repeated.

I made the biggest mistake of my life one night and was pretty sure that I had destroyed my career and my life. I called Rob on the recommendation of a friend and he immediately talked me off the ledge, showing care and compassion that an idiot like me did not deserve.. Once the proceedings started, Rob was as effective as could be imagined with regard to handling the case but more importantly he kept me fully informed about what was going on. He not only knows the law, he knows people and he knows how judges think. He framed my case to the court in such a way that I ended up getting supervision when I deserved much worse. In the end, Rob saved my butt with his great skill, I was truly lucky to hire him as my attorney.

I hired Attorney Favors to represent me in the purchasing process of a new home. Attorney Favors was very informative and always kept me abreast of details and status in the process. She was very knowledgeable about the process. Attorney Favors was very thorough and responsive to all request. The kind of attention provided to me during this process was amazing. When the sellers where trying to keep my earnest money because the deal fell through, Attorney Favors, was dedicated, determined and successful at getting the money returned. Hiring an Attorney for any process you enter into is very important, but getting an Attorney who can explain the law In layman terms and advise you in the process is what I appreciate and admired most about Attorney Favors. Anyone looking for a phenomenal and affordable Attorney I would definitely have to recommend Attorney Favors.

Albukerk more than anything listens! He is the only lawyer to win a case of Medicaid or Medicare fraud in the Chicago area and also to win the release of a man falsely accused as a sexually violent person who had been jailed for 30 years. He gets in there right away and preserves evidence of your innocence. If you are guilty he has the experience and knows the prosecutors and judges and how to get you the lowest possible sentence on a plea bargain. The only negative is that he tends to be blunt about worse case scenarios - but I believe that is only a matter of informing you honestly of the fact that the courts do not necessarily follow the law and juries and judges do not necessarily go by the evidence. There is far too much politics and prejudice in the courts and in juries. He is about as good as you will get and his prices are moderate. My family has used him for a collections case, for criminal defense, and I have watched him help friends with divorce cases and police excessive force cases.

Unfortunately, I found myself Indicted and charged with three federal felonies including bank fraud and money laundering. From the moment of my arrest over two years ago to the moment of my acquittal, Mr. Scott J. Frankel was clearly a gift from God. With patience, professional grace and decorum, sincere kindness and decency, Mr. Frankel shepherded me through the valley of death. His brilliant lawyering coupled with a keen perspicacity for the truth, was delivered to a jury in a fashion necessary to give me my life back. As I took my 83 year old Mother grocery shopping today, I wept and thanked God for Mr. Scott J. Frankel. I will be indebted to Scott for the remainder of my life and my family is so grateful words cannot express. He is truly a courtroom genius.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
