I was very disappointed with the representation I received from this law firm. Elaine Fitch was a solid partner, but in my opinion my attorney did a poor job "representing me" and a good job running up charges.

Gerben was reccomended through a trusted friend down here in Texas who has used them multiple times, and our experience using this team was first class as well. Very efficient and had a good strategy to register our trademark. They were always prompt with relaying updates through the process so you never questioned what was going on during the standard lengthy approval process. Thank you Eric and team.

First review I've written in a while. But, I have to say that I really appreciate Mr. Clinton. Who took time out of his day to chat with me about my case, entailing a property dispute. He gave me many valuable points of information and advice. He also gave the fully honest impression of looking out for my best interest, even when it came to bringing, or not bringing, on legal council. Thank you, Mr. Clinton

I have been a client for maybe 10 years with this firm and I have never been so grateful. They have been kind, helpful and is extremely fair. My law Colby Kuss, worked with me in two separate cases and he was very honest, and straightforward but was very concerned for my wellbeing and made sure I was comfortable with my decision and understood any information in my case. Colby has definitely made an impact in my life and I definitely consider myself as a loyal client. Thank you your dedication!

When saying “thank you” isn’t enough. Craig's firm wasn’t my first firm, it wasn’t even my second firm. Craig’s firm was my third firm, I went to one of those commercial 1-800 firms first and was shoveled off to a firm that was located on the other side of Virginia, then I was referred by a friend to a local firm who just was not equipped to handle my case properly. Craig and his team jumped in and took control, and I immediately knew I had finally found the Firm that would take care of me. I have worked in litigation for over 30 years, well indoctrinated in the legal system, but I have no experience or background in personal injury and Craig’s experience and zeal really shined throughout the process. They listened, empathized, were extremely knowledgeable and efficient. A retired judge who participated in the case was extremely complimentary on what a great job Craig and his team had done to provide him with the facts and details of my injuries. I will always be grateful to him and the entire team.

Subject: Disappointing Experience with Simeon & Miller Law Firm I am writing to express my frustration with the legal services I have received from Simeon & Miller. I initially reached out to the firm in March after an accident in October 2023, which was not my fault. At first, the other driver's insurance company was working with me, but communication stopped, prompting me to seek legal assistance. I turned to Simeon & Miller after conducting an online search and reading the firm's reviews. Unfortunately, that decision has proven to be a significant mistake. Despite the firm’s 20 years of service, I found only five reviews visible, which should have raised doubts about the authenticity of their online presence. This was a possibly my first red flag. Since then, my experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. The lack of communication has been deplorable, leaving me feeling like I’m tracking a package rather than receiving the legal representation I need. After forwarding all the necessary information for my case, I was initially assigned a paralegal. Shortly after, I was passed on to another assistant, who informed me that she would compile everything and forward it to the attorney. However, after several follow-up calls, it wasn’t until September that I finally spoke to the lawyer handling my case, even though they had all the information since March. When I did finally speak with the attorney, the call consisted of them asking a series of questions, explaining the potential value of my case, and inquiring about the lowest settlement amount I would accept. I was then told it could take another 90 days to potentially reach an agreement with the other party. As the 30-day mark approached, I received another call from the lawyer informing me that the case had settled at the original value they had quoted. I then inquired about when I could expect to receive the check, only to be told that it could take up to another 60 days. To my surprise, I later discovered an email titled "Simeon and Miller" with no follow-up call, requesting me to sign papers for the release of the check. Despite my numerous attempts to contact the lawyer, I was repeatedly told they were unavailable. After leaving several messages, I eventually had to ask another representative for answers regarding my case, and they provided me with the information I needed. To date, I have still not received a call back from my lawyer. Furthermore, I received a letter from the at-fault driver’s insurance company confirming that the check had been forwarded to the law firm, yet I still have not been contacted by anyone at Simeon & Miller. I am left to wonder whether they are holding the funds in escrow, potentially making money off my settlement while I continue to experience an unacceptable lack of communication. If you are seeking timely and efficient legal representation, I strongly advise you to avoid Simeon & Miller. My experience has been prolonged, impersonal, and frustrating, and I will never use this firm again. Sincerely, Cynthia Allen

I had an EEO case and felt very lost. I reached out to a previous law firm before Pitre and Associates, I did not have much faith in them. I continued researching and came across Pitre & Associates. My case was lengthy but it was handled and walked away with what was necessary. My dignity, and being able to apply for the gov with a new, clean SF-50. Overrides all they (the opponents)attended to do to my career. Was also compensated for damages. Pros: you will come out with something good amd benefitial with Pitre & Associates. Cons: It can get costly. Stand up for what you believe in, but be ready to spend some coins. The great thing is Mr. Pitre fights for you to get that money back. Thank you God!! I would certainly hire the firm again. I recommend the firm to anyone feeling lost and dealing with an EEO, Harrassment, hostile work environment, discrimination. I pray, I never get in a position like that again. It was emotionally draining. Michelle was my fave attorney, although I did not have her for too long. It is not just a job to her, she cares for people. I sensed that. Mr. Pitre is extremely knowledgeable and extremely responsive; he became my other fave at the end. My wish is: I had found them sooner for some advice before I had even attempted to deal with this. I was high risk pregnant in a very unhealthy situation. Some professional guidance would have helped. They are on my emergency call list if I come across something like this again.....God willing.

If you are looking for a strong lawyer who will aggressively fight for your rights; Senior Associate Michelle de Vera will be the perfect lawyer for you. I can attest to this. I truly appreciate her walking me through the complex EEOC process. What I was going through was bad enough, our discussion/talks gave me peace and relief, but most importantly peace. I will refer Pitre & Associates any day and especially, Senior Associate Michelle de Vera. L. Sands

I had an EEO case and felt very lost. I reached out to a previous law firm before Pitre and Associates, I did not have much faith in them. I continued researching and came across Pitre & Associates. I was contacted about a class actio. case and it was requested that I speak with a paralegal for an hour during my workday. I was asked up front my gender and race. After an hour long conversation, there was a follow-up email explaining that my gender and race disqualified me from the case. I wasted my lunch giving valuable information for a case that they knew up front I did not qualify for. Thanks for wasting my lunch break.

Nicole and Eric were a breath of fresh air!Nicole (super accommodating) saw me and heard my story and immediately got Eric. Eric was attentive and informative. Nicole & Eric were like a dynamic duo in the way they effectively & efficiently assisted me that same day/same hour whatever aid they were able to render. Going to the office is definitely a leg up because everyone would want assistance especially from these two.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
