In 2007 I was arrested and book into custody Stephanie was my lawyer I was looking at 15 to 20 years federal prison she advised me not to take the plea so I didn't while I was in custody I was not able to be released due to at flight risk cuz of my FTA's I had in my past so they wouldn't let me out on pretrial services or signature bond or anything. Stephanie got me released. While waiting for sentencing Stephanie helped me with all courts justice courts and city courts and federal court shelled me get my driver license back as well and slot of my tickets reduced Stephanie also had stood up for me in court on sentencing day and advise me not to take the 2nd plea either the 3rd plea was 3-5 prison time as well as 36 months probation. Judge turned around knock the plea out and gave me 36 months probation and no prison time at all. I love this lawyer she is awesome she was the only one excepted my calls when I was detained in FCC. Stephanie is awesome not all lawyers are perfect and understand they do have a lot of cases to deal with but Stephanie did gud by my side

Stephanie handle a case for me 15 years ago. She came to visit me at the jail and advised me to accept a plea. I was looking at 57 years and I was an angry man. Had been victimized by the system and told her I wanted to go to trial. I eventually took a deal. She was always in contact and I walked away with 3.5 years. I recently spoke with her again and she was very pleasant and helpful. I would recommend her to others.

Stephanie Meade was appointed to my criminal case by the Office of Court Appointed counsel. There are many reasons I would NOT recommend this attorney. When I originally spoke to her regarding the likely outcomes of my case, she had said going to trial would not be a good idea unless I had something that would "impeach" the testimony of the other individual involved in my case. The issue is I later found out that even though Stephanie Meade claims to have "done a lot of work on my case" that she didn't even find out that the individual she was referring to was arrested nine days later in connection to a burglary relating to methamphetamine use. This information took me fifteen minutes to find from a library computer- so how much work could she have really done? The Arizona Supreme Court rules state an attorney is supposed to diligently defend their clients. She clearly did not. When I explained why a specific Tucson Police officer violated my Miranda rights, she told me that throws out my confession yet did not go to the judge to have the confession thrown out. This does not seem like a diligent defense to me. Also, I sent a fax asking a specific question in regards to a specific law since it may have given me a defense to my charges, and never even got one phone call to answer my question regarding the question in my fax. It was not until I was pleading to the charge a month later that she even addressed my question. I asked her why none of my calls we're returned and her response was "your not my only client". As far as I know she never interviewed any of the police officers or dug in to the reasons why my case and specific points were not properly documented by the police who investigated the circumstances that day.

The main reason I hired Mr. Reyna was due to his reputation in the court room. My close friend went up against him . She stated she would have won with an attorney like him. Her recommendation came from the loosing side. For this reason we hired him. Not only does he pay close attention to what you are requesting but teach you why things can or cannot be done allowing you the same comfort he has in the case. This is huge for people fighting for their family to know an attorney wants what is best for you and not your money goes a long way. My friend and I call him the Pit bull of law. He is aggressive and fights clean, abides by the rules, but is detailed and backs himself with evidence and sound reason. Defiantly recommend him to anyone.

Hired this attorney for 3 cases were charged a flat rate to represent all 3 cases. The 1st case he lost, which was to remove a 3rd party restraining order. Representation was poor, inadequate. Only met with attorney once and we had to provide all information and do all the research and run around collecting paperwork ourselves bringing them back and forth to his office. After realizing he was not going to be able to proceed with sufficient knowledge and skills, we hired a attorney out of town. Asked for refund on the 2 other cases we paid for which his office denied to refund when he did not represent or do any work other than file to postpone date.

We hired Mrs. Silva 4 years ago for our immigration battle and she is not like the typical lawyer that will tell you what you want to hear just to get your money. She handled everything great and was VERY knowledgeable on the immigration laws. We did run into a problem, but the blame was to be put on the USCIS and not her. She calmed our fears right away and handled that for us in a timely manner. I recommend her every time I meet someone in need of a great Immigration attorney. You might not be amazed by the amount of people working at her office, but her work will more than make up for that. Also, Immigration cases work as fast is the USCIS does, so don't expect overnight results. Our case took over 2 years due to different variables.

This attorney has NO ethics. During his felony/misdemeanor probation he egregiously violated attorney/client privilege and misrepresented facts in his testimony against a client. He boosts of his law offices and most are offices of his clients including a collections agency in Illinois. Coincidence ????? Within 30 days of his deceitful testimony against a client he petitioned the Court to terminate or modify his probation. Reward???? In my limited research of this guy, all he does in loose.

I was hit with an erroneous protective order from my soon to be ex wife after I filed for divorce. I was devastated as I always maintained a spotless record. After hiring another attorney, I was hoping to get this Order of Protection quashed. 3 days before my hearing, this other attorney suddenly withdrew from counsel as there was a conflict of interest that they overlooked. I was terrified and by pure chance, I was given Eve's number from someone who works in the same building my office is in. Even took my case on such a short notice and her team worked tirelessly for the next day and a half to help build my defense for the pending hearing. At the hearing, Eve was the reason the hearing went in my favor. Her knowledge of the law and her plan of action worked so well that my wife actually ending up admitting in court that no harm was ever done to her! As painful as the divorce has been, I owe so much thanks to Eve for the peace of mind I feel today. Thank you so much Eve. I will gladly recommend you to everyone I know. You are truly an amazing attorney!!

Beware of this attorney DesaRae Tucker, She does not know very much about criminal defense. I would have been better off with a state appointed attorney first off in our first meeting she mocked me another words, not believing me I was not in a state, where I could even speak for myself she took advantage of that, she lied to me and scared me to death into taking a plea. I was out of it and wondered myself at times. Is she on my side? I should have trusted that. She bullies people and is very defensive. Just please be aware and do not hire her for any kind of law. I hired Mr. Jeffrey Blackman regarding a civil matter in July of 2019. Mr. Blackman immediately went to work, and wasted absolutely no time in producing results. Mr. Blackman paid great attention to fine detail, and kept me informed through constant communication. As a combat veteran, this was much appreciated. As I'm sure with anyone's legal situation, the proceedings caused me anxiety. However, due to Mr. Blackman's high effort, consistent communication, and production of results, my anxiety was minimal. Mr. Blackman has a very strong presence, which I believe derives from the experience and confidence he has. Court proceedings can be quite intimidating. Mr. Blackman's presence gives you an assurance you will not be allowed to be bullied or forced into any circumstance you do not wish to find yourself. If any unfortunate event in the future makes it necessary for me to hire an attorney, I would most certainly utilize Mr. Blackman's services.

I left a poor review of a phone call with this lawyer. He called me back regarding it and I did not listen to the whole message due to low tolerance for confrontation or stress. I am writing this second one to balance out the first. It was only a phone call. The review I left was a little facitious, which isn't like me. I know how it is to have your reputation unfairly attacked, so I relent. The point of that review was to inform the attorney Mr. Blackman that my impression of the call was that he really didn't want to hear about the case, and I really did want some thoughts on it. Excuse my imaginative description, but it is the truth that is what I imagined! I'm sure no one wants people to think that way of them. Moral of the story: if the phone is your first contact, and people are in a scary situation, you may want to be a little easier and friendlier. Don't cut people off so much when they are speaking, etc. I have nothing bad to say about Mr. Blackman as an attorney, however.

Once I got to the office, the front desk lady asked me who I was here to see and no name was given to me so I called them to let them know I was here (and on time). They told me they’d send someone to come get me. I sat and waited over 20 minutes. So I called them again and it went to voicemail. Waited 10 more minutes and nothing. I feel it is very unprofessional especially when there is an appointment scheduled. I had other things to do and went out of my way to get a babysitter and drive all the way down to the office. I recently went through a divorce. During this divorce I was willing to concede on all matters except one. About a month into it my wife and I were looking to have a consent decree drawn up. He told us that we couldn't do that. After completely draining the savings accounts he drew up the paperwork that we had asked for 7 months earlier and $15000. This guy doesn't care about your family no matter how much he says that he does. His wife Terri is unprofessional, rude and just a disgusting person. He also likes to point out his military credentials but failed to recognize the new laws that pertain to military retirement for spouses. Once my lawyer called him out on it, he suggested one of his buddies to us for the calculations of the allotment. Be cautious and expect erroneous billing if there are any funds remaining in the retainer.

When my ex-wife and I divorced we decided to split everything 50/50, time with our children and also all their bills. After five years of this working fine, she took me to court to try and relocate to another state where her new husband was from. If that was denied, she wanted primary custody and also a few other things, lawyer fees etc. I talked with Mike about the case and decided to go with him. I had read a couple of reviews, some good and some not so good. Mike was definitely more expensive than the other attorneys I had looked into. My ex had Bays as her attorney. I was extremely nervous for our big day in court, not to mention Bays has some great reviews. We had our day and Mike did an amazing job. At no point during our day in court did I question what I had paid him. It was a great feeling to know that he was on my team. I walked out after a full day in court smiling ear to ear. There was no real change to our parenting time and I still get to be with my daughters half the time. I can't say enough good things about not only Mike but also his staff, Carissa and Teri. All of them are very professional. They always kept me well-informed and updated me right away on any changes. There was no comparing the two attorneys that day in court. They where clearly on different playing fields. Thanks for everything Mike, Carissa, and Teri!

I had a very contentious divorce and heated child custody battle. Mr. Poulos helped me prevail over the muck the ex was alleging against me. My experience with Mr. Poulos was he is very matter of fact and does not give in to the divorce drama. This helped me keep calm. He helped me understand the intricacies of the divorce process so I knew what I could expect. Sometimes it seemed prophetic to see what he told me before come to pass as the dissolution progressed. Although sometimes I felt like more action was needed on his part to litigate the issues, he was deliberate and detail oriented in following court rules and procedures to avoid muddying the waters of the conflict. Mr. Poulos helped me restore and save my parental rights, keep property and maintain reasonableness. After a long and nasty divorce, the court awarded the majority of what I wanted. I offer my sincere appreciation and thanks to Mr. Poulos's help.

the person handling the complaints for the Arizona bar is So unethical and unprofessional with such arrogance it's easy to tell he does this to certain people often. He said that he didn't know about any law any law about unlicensed professionals. I had to send him the Arizona ruling to prove to him that unlicensed practicing of law illegal. He wouldn't investigate and told me that he is the only one I can talk and any calls I make will go to him so for me not to try to continue to get justice. I spent 20 asking him for a supervisor Non-Stop, because he couldn't give an articulable reason his denial. He told me if I filed a complaint it's only going to go to him. No one should treat someone else like this especially if Justice hasn't been served or even investigated. If he's done this to me he's done this to a lot of people. Since he didn't give me his name I don't know who to complain to I emailed the judge and they forwarded the emails to Tom he sent me an email saying again that everything's going to go through him but he won't give me a supervisor's name. If you've had this experience please share it

I wish I had read the reviews prior to accepting her as my attorney. Do not make the same mistake. I had a similar instance where Diaz was not responding to correspondence in a timely manner and not forwarding communication to review. Very unprofessional during and even after. My case was irreparably affected and not only am I in debt, my child will live with the consequences for the rest of her life. Worst family attorney ever. She should really take a step back from taking on clients when she knows she’s not capable of properly representing them. Judges know her and do not take her seriously!!

If you don't hire this Attorney you are crazy, She will only follow the law and will not blow smoke up your ....... The law is the law and she will not tell you you're going to win just to get hired. If you don't win your case, you probably didn't have a case in the first place.

It was clear throughout the process that Chris is well-versed and well respected in the legal community. My case was pretty serious. Yet, he was able to convey the circumstances in a way that garnered empathy and the best outcome possible. I highly recommend his services.

I wouldn't hire this lawyer. He doesn't put his all in. He was my nephew lawyer didn't fight for my nephew in his criminal or civil case. All he was worried about is getting paid. He got paid over what his flat fee. Got my nephew 14 years in prison. He is a sell out.

This attorney was hired by my wife after we had an investigation by CPS. This Attorney Brad Tenbrook was assigned to her case. After 9 months of incurring legal fees this attorney made no communication with my wife regarding the investigation by CPS even though she inquired several times about the status and placed a 20,000 dollar with the firm. It wasn't till my case with Scottsdale Court was resolved that they finally disclosed the CPS case was closed after 10 months of representation. This attorney was very condescending to her and extremely Rude. I would not recommend hiring this firm under no circumstances. They charged us over 10,000 for nothing. Made her worry for almost a year about CPS possibly making a big deal about this situation.

I was ignored when I asked for motions to be filed. Brad was not well informed on my case before walking in the court room. Unless you are forking over 20 grand or more you will not see any work that can be done cheaper by someone more experienced. I asked why a motion for contempt was not filed when my child went missing for 6 months AFTER I hired brad. His response was that it was not necessary. The ultimate issue. During trial because he did not file the motions I asked for I was denied custody of my child. I filed a bar complaint against him for not doing what I paid him for and he responded with a bill for having to explain himself to the bar. Disgusting right? If you are a victim of domestic violence, have dependency issues look elsewhere. They just want money.

Brad is an excellent attorney and handled my CPS case. He was knowledgeable, aggressive and creative In working a plan to quickly get through the convoluted CPS/juvenile court system. Not only did he quickly advocate for us, he had the utmost patience and compassion during the emotional roller coaster. He truly cares and is passionate about what he does. His staff is courteous, responsive and prompt. He has such a respected stance by all parties in the courtroom. I would highly recommend hiring Brad if CPS ever comes and knocks on your door. It was the best decision and he saved our family and most importantly, our children.

Hired Marc by default only to be insulted and and treated very rudely. After going to work he continued to increase his fees and insults he worked harder in finding ways to charge me more then he would on my case. He would only return my calls when he felt like it. I would give him the information he requested only for him to confuse and mix-up the information then complain about having to do the work. finally imputing your information given to him incorrectly and charging me almost double what I was originally quoted. yet he complained about everything. Then after charging me double and making the entire event more difficult he quit halfway through and charged me a highly inflated amount. I still had to hire another attorney to finish the case and do damage control. Do yourself a favor and hire a competent attorney one that doesn’t blame you for all of his mistakes.

I paid to retain Mr. Grant for a divorce based on 10 years of separation, Mr. Grant failed to take any action for several months and completely stopped responding to all forms of contact. No paperwork was filed in the two months I had Mr. Grant on my case. I had to terminate Mr. Grant and am fighting to get my retainer fee back. Mark Grant really put in the work and effort to ensure my son came back home to his mommy. I couldn't have asked for a better lawyer. I did follow protocol as close as possible and completely gave it my all as well. Marc did not disappoint in ensuring that 100% of my hard work paid off. The previous statement says he's a beast in the court room and I very much agree. He will always keep his clients best interest as priority too. Absolutely amazing! Jenna Lockard

This attorney was court appointed, did not keep me informed of the case nor did he even speak during any of our court proceedings! He would "assure" me of what would happen but when it came down to it he barely said two words to the court in my defense. I have a mental illness (depression) and he was HIGHLY offensive to me. Didn't return phone calls or emails in the beginning and when I finally WAS able to reach him, he said my repeated phone calls were a sign of my mental illness. I stopped calling and was not kept informed of the case at all. Months later, he made the comment that "A Beautiful Mind was a good movie and proves I can be a good parent" How insulting!! I reported this to the State Bar of Arizona and was told he would be contacting me... well I'm still waiting. If you get this lawyer appointed to you, I HIGHLY recommend requesting a new one IN THE BEGINNING! Do not trust that anything will happen in your favor as long as I have. It will not happen.

After my second hearing, I was faced with decisions and some tough realizations both during mediation and in the court room. I found Mr. Westervelt to be very quick and responsive to phone calls, emails, and questions I had (prior to, during, and after my court hearings) in my case. Mr. Westervelt was court-appointed to represent me in my case and during the last hearing, it became very clear that I was going to need to hire an attorney if I wanted to have any real chance at a fair trial. Juvenile dependency cases, I have come to find out, are among the most complex and intensive cases within the court system-definitely requiring much more time and effort than a court-appointed attorney is able to give. I hired a new attorney later that month after speaking with around 20 (literally!) I would not recommend anyone to keep with a court-appointed attorney in juvenile dependency cases unless they absolutely have no choice. These attorneys are handling your case, along with a stack of who knows how many other court-appointed client cases, and then their clients paying them out of pocket on top of it. You are dealing with a child's life and future and these attorneys have the power to impact the outcome of that case. To not give these attorneys the time they need to dedicate themselves 100% to that kind of a case should be illegal...It is not fair to the attorney, the client, and most of all, it is unfair to the child involved. Mr. Westervelt showed to be trustworthy, responding to my emails and calls that day or the next, and seemed very knowledgeable in these types of cases. I was disappointed, however, that I did not receive minute entry copies of our hearings. Some very important issues I had brought to his attention for the past several weeks were not voiced at all during mediation or in the courtroom. During his opening argument at our last hearing, Mr. Westervelt didn't sound thoroughly prepared and was missing important documents he was referencing in his opening argument. If he had requested these from me ahead of time, I would have happily provided them. The information and references he gave were outdated and it was hard to follow his overall argument; he just wasn't ready. Assertiveness of any kind was completely absent and it was very hard to follow him. However, in the process of trying to hire a private attorney, I did speak to many offices who were familiar with him, one of them even giving his name out as a referral. The problem is, I am not sure if the referral is due to his performance or if his name was being thrown around because he is one of the few attorneys who specialize in these types of cases (there is a very small pool of them and trust me they are hard to find!) Overall and in the short time he represented me, I found Mr. Westervelt to be a very nice man, great at following up, never any issues with trust, and certainly has knowledge in his field of practice.

As a current client of Marcus Westervelt, I would like to give my first review as my case is just in its beginning stage. I swore off lawyers about 5 years ago after an experience that emptied my savings and did nothing more than I could have done myself. It was so costly that by the time the trial rolled around, I was the one walking in without a lawyer to represent me. I had to build my case myself and prepare to not only argue my case, but also battle the other party and his lawyer. My experiences only went downhill from there with very little exception. I know nothing about being a lawyer. The one thing I have learned over the years about lawyers is that it is not so much what you know about the law (that is the most clean cut out within the job) but it is about being transparent to who is working the system and how they are getting away with it. In today's society, the most obvious factors (money, politics, character) and the less obvious (unities like the free masons, personal preferences, first impressions) are exactly those which we are caught in as we try to solve what can be a very complicated or a very simple equation, depending on how good of a lawyer you are I would imagine. That question should be simple and Marcus Westervelt is the first lawyer I have ever dealt with that initially laid it out for me. He asked me, what do you believe your case is really about? Very simple, very clean cut...On my first impression of him, I found myself walking into a conversation where time was extremely limited and the questions on both ends were almost infinite. Marcus kept me on track in those 15 minutes we had upon our first meeting. He walked into our meeting not only with the ability to communicate the other party's issues but also ask me what mine were. I like to believe that this was his way to answering that one simple question: What is this case really about? I found myself rambling in my nervousness and overwhelmed in the situation alone. He was assertive to stop me and pull me back on track. If I tried to tell him" how it was", he would remind me who the lawyer is because I believe that no one knows my case like I do, but then again I am not the lawyer and I need to be reminded of that. I guess some may feel a bit peeved at a certain level of assertion, but I walked out of that meeting with a smile inside. If he is this way with his clients, I have no doubts how he handles those on the opposing side. I have visited his office and had contact with two of his staff members to date. I always get a phone call returned and his full attention on my case and my case only. If he cannot focus on me, then we schedule a time that works for both of us. So far, he has not been flaky or careless of my case to any extent. He does not hesitate for a moment to give his honest opinion even if it is the last thing I want to hear. He just lays it out there. We have some time to go before my case concludes, but I am very confident that I finally have representation that doesn't make me simply feel like just another form of job security for someone else in this country.

After reading the negative review on this site, I was apprehensive about Mark. He was assigned to defend me. My experience was positive. Mark got a felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor and my fine reduced by 75%. All in all he probably saved me about $9,000.00. After we finished in court I showed Mark the review I had read when researching my court assigned lawyer. Mark noticed that the author claimed to have hired Mark. Mark told me, he is not for hire, hasn't been for years. He provides defense at to cost through the court.

this lawyer has forgotten to listen to his clients and talk to them in a respectful and painless manner. It is already a burden going thru the court process. I think he needs to go back in time and remember that we are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Not the other way around.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
