Do Not hire this guy. He will say what you want to hear, until he gets paid. After that, will not show up for court. He will call in, lack of communication is severe. If you call him with a question, he always makes you feel like you are bothering him and also make you feel stupid. Always too busy for your case and talks down to you. The only way he gets his clients off is to try and get them to snitch, putting their family in jeopardy. To him, its no big deal. Has no good relationship with judges or prosecutors. Wasted $10000, for NOTHING. Now he is unwilling to cooperate with new counsel ans provide them with documents that I had to gather myself and pay to have them sent to him. We even haf to drive to court house to give him documents that I had mailed to him, but he was too lazy to go to post office to pick them up. Save your money,Settlment conference was set for an hour, he was late, had about 15 minutes. He was not prepared. The clerk even came out asking us where he was, because he knew what time he was supposed to be there. Save your money and get a REAL attorney, this guys a joke and will take your money for no services rendered.

The City was trying to put my corporation (business) out of operation due to a few minor complaints arranged by a former employee and a few members she built a relation with. Mr. Wolkin not only won the case outright, he was also able to require the City of Tucson pay all legal fees we incurred (funds received). He handled other legal matters over the previous years with the same efficiency, aggressiveness and success. He was truly outstanding. Our business relationship continued for years.

This lawyer was representing us in an unlawful foreclosure case. Because he failed to file TRO or the like before the unlawful auction (he said he didn't realize he needed to do so), my home was sold, creating even bigger problems and the new buyers trying to evict us and take possession. He then dropped the case, leaving us to fend for ourselves in a gigantic and overwhelming legal situation that he created.

Disappointing, I was blamed for "changing your mind" and when I confronted Alison about the nearly 2 years it took when we accomplished nothing she offered to write up a judicial complaint for me to file against the judge. Emails went ignored, then I get a bill for $60/per email since I terminated the firm. Never met anyone from the firm, despite multiple attempts to come conference in person, meet in person, never once did I step food in their office. My kids situation was never taken serious and finally after nearly 2 years I realized this is not what is best for my kids. Already in 3 days my new attorney resolved the matter.

We hired Dan back in June of 2013 to defend our son for criminal charges he was facing. The law office was refferred to us by a family member, and Dan was assigned to our case. From the beginnning, he was very compasionate about our situation and explained to us what our son was looking at, what the options were, and what steps we needed to take. He took charge of the case and I never had to worry about what was going on. I knew he would work as hard as he could for us. I asked that he contact me weekly via text message, phones calls, or email to provide me status updates. He provided me his personal cell phone and I was able to text him at any time and he would get back to me timely. He never hesitated to provide, even if he had none. He conducted numerous interviews via phone and in person with people that could help my sons case. My son was possibly facing years in prison, but in the end only served 2 days in jail thanks to Dan and all his hard work. I was never a believer in Attorneys and felt it was a waste of money. But Dan proved me wrong. He cared about us, and fought to save my sons future. Thank you DAN KAFFANA!

Kaffana failed to file certain time sensitive court documents and Kaffana stated he did file them. He failed to timely submit a subpoena and he wrote in incorrect information for the subpoena. Kaffana never attached the transcript/evidence needed for an appeal submitted to the Court of Appeals. The CoA threw out the appeal solely because there was not the transcript/evidence needed for the Opening Brief of the appeal. He has lied to my Ex's counsel and stated I was difficult to reach when I had been emailing Kaffana and made several phone calls with voicemails left at his office. He withdrew as my lawyer because he stated he could not get a hold of me for 30+ days, which was false. The State Bar is investigating this matter. He has detrimentally ruined my life for my kids and I.

Currently she is working in a non-profit sector as a bar counsel but having her in the position is a mistake and betrayal to the public. She helps abusive lawyers who take clients' money in fraudulent manners. She makes biased decisions by skipping processes required by the rule. She is caring for her own safety by to not antagonize lawyers in her region rather than serving for justice. It is really strange that Taylor, assigned to my case, made a robo-decision, without steps required the rule, for the greedy lawyer while at least two experienced counsel and lawyer found my case an issue...one even told that he has never seen so egregious case. Taylor should be investigated by the public. I do not think she is working in serious manner. I confirmed her activity on SNS during her work hour, while she took no time to take proper steps before decision. One more important thing. Her ethical standard is low enough to approve the fraudulent behavior by the above-mentioned lawyer (for example, critical facts which would make clients stop legal battle were cautiously hidden), then she would do the same thing to her clients when she goes back to a private sector after leaving her current position. Be careful.

He did a good job with case, and because he did what he did I got helped. But, he was hired by me, with my money, paid out of money I got from the sale of my house and an acre lot I owned, but basically did my parents bidding. Maybe he believed they were actually making the payment, which they weren't, that's why most lawyers won't accept payment from anyone but their client. As far as the law, he was great, he was prompt, not too expensive, not cheap. He got the case dismissed. Legally, he was fine, I am just very unhappy with how he was paid by me but not working for me, and I was his client.

I had been in AZ for approximately 2 years, before being charged with an aggravated DUI (wrong way driving) which is a felony. I had never been in trouble prior to this incident and was scared out of my mind. Mr. Ramos was hired, after I terminated my first attorney, for almost jeopardizing my professional license. As many have stated in their reviews, when I initially contacted Mr. Ramos, he seemed caring, showed empathy, and seemed eager to assist. He even alluded to possibly getting my charges dropped, due to me correcting my mistake and not actually getting pulled over going the wrong way. Quick sidebar: When the police pulled me over, they stated that my vehicle fit the description of a call that they received about a car going the wrong way. No one was injured and there was no accident as, I had corrected my mistake and was going the right way when I got pulled over. Anyway, moving forward (throughout a 2 year span), he attended some of my court hearings and on the last hearing, where I would be convicted, he stated, “We got a deviated offer and I think you should take it.” Mind you, I never knew what the initial offer was, until that day. So, the initial offer was 4 months in prison and the deviated offer was 2 months in county jail. I didn’t want to do either but, I signed the agreement for the two months as there was no time for discussion, we were at the final hearing. The only good thing about this is, when it happened, Arizona had just put an expungement law in place, and my conviction qualifies to get expunged. There is so much more that I can write but, I tried to keep it as short as possible. Please, if you’re considering him… reconsider! As some have mentioned, you’ll probably get a more favorable outcome, with a court appointed attorney!

I fully paid him $10,000. He is only interested in asking me to sign a stipulated agreement without explaining to me why there was a charge of money laundering case against me. He never discussed any possible defense I have. I then transferred the case to another attorney Bradley Rideout who then applied to the court and have the case dismissed without the necessity of a trial. When I asked for the bill and for refund of the money which I have paid him, he refused by lying to say that I never asked for termination of the agreement and he also lied to say that I never asked for the refund of any money owed to me. I with the help of a friend has reported him to the State Bar in Arizona. The State Bar is now conducting investigation into the matter.

Do not waste your time with this guy. The only time you will hear from him is when you owe money. He blames everything on his paralegals and they do not know their left from their right from what I experienced "I don't know what your talking about" is not something you want to hear from your attorney. I think he takes on DUI cases because they are cut and dry for him, personally I think he is on the police's side. These people who are indorsing him have obviously never used him.

Mr Countryman has been assigned to my Son's criminal case as his Public Defender in Yavapai County, Prescott Arizona. My son has been in jail Since Oct 12, 2023. He has had 5 Court hearings thus far and Mr Countryman has missed 4 of them. The 1 that he was present for was via Video from a remote area. He's seen my son a total of 1 time also via a 4 minute jail video visit. My son has repeatedly tried to contact him from the county jail's telephone communication system but each time he get vml box which is always full. Not once has he responded. My son has written to Mr. Countryman as well. Still no response. I myself have reached out to Mr Countryman via email on behalf of my Son's hoping to get a response and Nothing! We are due to appear in Court again very soon & are so fearful that he will not show up in court once again. Desperate stressed and afraid of the outcome of this entire ordeal. My Son is completely Stressed because he has no clue as to what is going on with his case. Actually we both are. I wonder can my son request that the judge to assign a different attorney?

Very simple non-contested divorce, my ex-wife and I had everything laid out. She met with us once. Before the ink dried on my $3,500 check she had cashed it as soon as we left what she calls an office. She shares an office space with another attorney, and sometimes someone answers the phone. 99% time you just leave a message that usually doesn't get returned. If you want to do any contact with her you have to use email. Very unprofessional to just be an email attorney. We tried to get a second meeting to make sure she had all of the wording correct as her boiler plate contradicted our portions of our decree. After the decree was finalized I contacted her and she failed to get me the documents I needed for a home loan. After a few emails, one telling her I may have to contact the bar association she sent me a scanned copy within minutes with a nasty email. Nice when you first meet but after she takes the money and runs and you are hard pressed to meet with her again. I wish I would have paid attention to the other reviews, but my son recommended her Good news is everything is done.

I didn't use a lawyer for my divorce so was a bit lost on how to select one. I contacted Ms. Scott and she was initially responsive. She was actually listed in my legal plan through work. I decided to hire her because of the flat fee and she seemed like she understood what I was up against. Once I hired her, she became completely unresponsive. She works alone - no paralegals and uses a Regency type receptionist who answers all sorts of other peoples calls too and can't answer anything regarding your case. You are completely reliant on waiting for Ms. Scott to get back to you. When I was getting ready to attend mediation, I had to reach out to her to ask what I needed to do to prepare. She told me that I needed to remain calm and the mediator would be writing up a recommendation to the judge based on our responses. She also told me to bring all my notes and documentation to the mediation and bring up everything. I arrived only to find out this was completely the opposite and that if I didnt feel comfortable discussing something I shouldn't bring it up. The mediator stated that the whole process was confidential and the judge would only know that we didn't reach agreement. As a lawyer Ms. Scott should have known what type of mediation I was attending and I lost faith some faith in her. I called her immediately after it was over and had to leave a voicemail. Then I tried emailing her several times over the next few weeks and left a few more messages. After almost 3 weeks I sent a nasty email telling her the lack of responsiveness was not acceptable and unprofessional. I finally got a call from her. But she was full of excuses why she hadn't contacted me. One of which was she was on vacation. Which seems to be a theme with her because I was with her from November to March and she went on 3 extended vacations. By the time that I talked to her about my mediation, I was so upset with her and felt like I was not being represented that I decided to hire another attorney. When I asked for partial money back she sent me a list of stuff she had done (which is completely exaggerated) and she claims she spent $4060 on my case. This lawyer literally filed paperwork to respond to my ex in a custody matter and answered 3 emails and then talked to me 3 weeks after my mediation. My new lawyer (who is not flat fee) has done so much for me and is in constant contact when issues come up. i know what to expect and feel like I'm paying for a service that I'm getting. She is more expensive but I'm fighting for my children and I cannot put a price tag on that.

Mrs. Scott represented me during a very tough custody battle between the mother of my child and myself. She was very upfront with me as to what I can expect and how things could play out. I saw that she was honest and she came off as very "human" which is big for me. We worked together for over a year only to land at a victorious conclusion. Mrs. Scott is a busy woman and It is important to understand that patience is best in dealing with any case. There were times when I became anxious, but there wasn't anything that couldn't be done in time. I definitely appreciate her for all of her efforts.

This guy is a joke. He charged me $3500 for misdemeanor DUI representation. Basically all he did to help was take the papers and sentencing from the judge and hand them to me. After completing all my terms of sentencing (alc. screening, level II education, ignition interlock, MADD, etc. I faxed all records to him to file with the courts. Three years later I got a letter from the court saying I failed to provide proof of alcohol screening and level II ed. This was the first time I'd heard of anything not being filed and completed. I had records and fax cover sheets showing that I indeed sent them to Paul Banales's office. Apparently, he did not properly file them with the courts. Upon hearing of this, he refused to correct the issue and said I had to appear myself at the hearing. I live in Scottsdale and the court is in Tucson. I refused to drive over 100 miles and miss an entire work day to correct an issue that was no fault of my own. I basically had to get further legal representation just to get Banales to do his job. NEVER hire this man.

I should have listened to these comments. They are absolutely true. This attorney is in the best interest in the opposite party getting their way. Has no interest in you whatsoever. Turned none of my evidence in causing my order of protection to be dismissed. I was better off defending myself. He even forgot what side of the party he was in court. How embarrassing when the judge asked if he received the defendant's exhibits and thought he was representing the defendant....🤦‍♀️ He called me the day before the hearing asking if I drop my order of protection. Why the heck would I drop it when the defendant made threats over txt ? Are you out of your mind?! Very rude and unprofessional. Look elsewhere. I will be filling a complaint with the state bar.

This goes back as far as 1998, It goes without saying that I've led somewhat of a colorful past. Unfortunately I found myself in need of a criminal defense attorney. David came highly recommended. Throught the past 25 years I've needed his services on more than one occasion. He was not only very professional, he was personable as well. He treated me with the utmost respect. And has done an impeccable job on my behalf. I have referred numerous individuals to David and he has done a remarkable job for them . David and I have become very close friends since our first encounter 25 years ago. There is NOBODY I would rather have at my side in a courtroom other than David Rubin. I may be a little bias, due to our now friendship. BUT HIS WORK SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. If it weren't for David I woukd be sitting in prison for the rest of my life. THATS FACT. So as the title states. In my opinion. HE WALKS ON WATER! THANK YOU DAVID.

I paid $50 for a 30-minute consultation with a referred lawyer. My consultation happened yesterday around 3:30 PM, 15 minutes later than scheduled (originally scheduled for 3:15 PM but I understand things happen). I consider myself a reasonable, understanding, and forgiving person so when I say that the lawyer that I talked to was completely, utterly rude and disrespectful to me, I am not exaggerating. The Lawyer I talked to is Rachel F Johnson. For the first 5-10 minutes of our phone conversation, the connection was so bad that I could barely understand her. She was cutting in and out from bad connection and I could hear what sounded like children talking/yelling in the background. She finally had to hang up and call me back which did work but throughout the rest of the phone call, I could hear so much background noise and talking and yelling, it seemed very unprofessional and made me feel like she didn't take the consultation seriously. She admitted to me that she was not "in the office" so that's why the connection was bad. After that for the next 8-12 minutes she was yelling at me, belittling me, talking down to me, and making me feel stupid because I did not respond to a question the way she wanted me to. She continued to go on and on about how I was wasting her time and my time. She counted down how many minutes I had left and how much time I had wasted by not answering her question properly. My boyfriend heard the whole thing and it was such degrading, disrespectful, and disgusting behavior to display towards someone who paid for a service and is seeking help. I feel that I did not receive a proper consultation and the consult I paid for did not benefit me. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

My childrens father was represented by Mr. De La Torre recently...as a public defender im totally aware he works for the state, but I feel he definitely could have worked harder for his client. He put noone other than myself & his client on the stand, not a character witness...noone else. There was clear cut discrepencies in the manner of how evidence was obtained, and witnesses reports to police and their given testimony. But clearly the most important legal matter he didn't tell his client, and that was if he lost this case, under A.R.S. 13-604.12 (B) that his client would serve no less then the presumptive sentence because he was already on probation. (Probably important to advise ur client on!!) However he did tell me & his client not to mention any time frame to the jury or on the stand regarding possible sentencing as it would be declared a mistrial.

This guy represented himself as practicing family law and handled my child custody case. He charged low up front fee and a huge hourly rate while he dragged his backside. In court he was totally unprepared, and basically stood there with his pants around his ankles while I lost my kids to an abusive controlling ex who walked out on us a year earlier, then got away with one lie after another. Then after he lost this case for me, he refused to help appeal it... He's also holding my file because I can't pay him (he screwed up my financials so I got hammered with an unafforable child support debt) so I don't even have the paperwork now to file my case on my own! Don't hire him for family law, he's useless.

Man was so rude he couldn't wait to get off the phone and didn't listen to what I was saying before I finished saying it, two sentences. I asked him a basic procedural question that he said he couldn't answer unless he reviewed my entire case. Whether you can file an appeal in bankruptcy is universal and procedural, it doesn't change "depending on your case". don't waste money on these idiots, they can only lose for you.

I would never recommend Mr. Weagant. He speaks about people disrespectfully using bias behavior. His wife is a judge and they tried to have my mothers rights served under his wife as he served as the kids best interest attorney. He does not make eye contact, does not shake hands, call people statistics and never give the respect to client in the appropriate manor.highly unprofessional, speaks opinions and not the law. He has never once came and spoke to my mother or me in regards the her children and the child abuser he said is the best for those kids. Boy only if you only knew Mr. Weagant how those kids are living in hell. read the counseling notes look at the kids grades they are not doing great as your client sat on the stand and lied. If you would if you did your job according the law and not your relaxed ways.

I would not recommend him to anyone. He has done nothing for my son, except promise things that never happen. He says things about his client, that he should never say. He does not care. He won't return a phone call , and let family know what's going on. I would not recommend him to anyone.

Nope. Just Nope. Peter A. Gutierrez (Thrush Law Group) was appointed as my legal counsel by the judge. After reading the "glowing" reviews of his outstanding character and performance I was confident my case would be handled properly and in a timely manner. Unfortunately, that initial confidence evaporated and turned into panic when he failed to perform even the most basic task legal counsel is duty bound to perform- communicate with the client (me). In the nearly two (2) months he was my "assigned" counsel I never got to speak with him even once. He kept me fire-walled behind his paralegal assistant and the communications went no further. I did provide the paralegal assistant with all the evidence necessary to accurately interpret and represent my case like security camera video/pictures, body camera video, and even video from my sunglasses camera. The finding of fact being not only "not guilty" but that the PCSD Deputy shouldn't have even issued the citation in the first place. Clearly, something that Peter A. Gutierrez could and should have handled without even going to trial. But I never even got to hear from him at all. Not about the evidence I submitted. Nothing about what his game-plan or strategy was or might be. No personal meeting or even an over-the-phone discussion. His behavior was no different than one would expect to see from a public defender who wouldn't communicate with the client until the very day of the hearing. Then in that hearing he would have explained away why he was unwilling and/or incapable of providing the representation I or anyone else would deserve. I didn't give Peter A. Gutierrez or the Thrush Law Group the chance to sell me out. I fired him 2 weeks before the hearing date and for failing to perform that basic duty of communication with the client (me). I mean, how can any lawyer properly represent someone without examining the evidence and formulating a strategy? I did find competent legal counsel and the case was handled properly with the charge being dismissed due to the actions of that competent legal counsel. Unlike Peter A. Gutierrez, the new lawyer (not Thrush Group..) did communicate with me. In person. Over-the-phone. Emails too. And the case was properly dismissed. If the court has appointed Peter A. Gutierrez as your legal counsel be afraid. Be very afraid that even though you are innocent of any wrongdoing this lawyer will play along to get along with the prosecutor/judge and you'll end up with a wrongful criminal conviction on your record. (_Oo)

I hired Pete after I received a DUI in Arizona. This had HUGE ramifications on my livelihood. Pete went the extra mile and fought like a sabre toothed tiger in court. He is an excellent litigator. I was acquitted of all charges. He later took on the AZ DMV for me, again, all charges dropped. If you get in trouble in AZ, this is the guy you want. He goes the extra mile and does not take "NO," for an answer when it comes to your defense.

Peter caused more stress than my actual divorce. He could never give me an answer when I asked for updates on my case but would charge me for the phone call. I would have to leave messages with the front desk staff requesting updates on my case because he was never available. Peter would ask me questions about my case that had already been discussed and documented in my file. The only time he had to appear at a hearing for my case, he gave excuses to the judge why documents related to monies I was awarded had not been filed, which I was also not aware of, and the judge yelled at him. I never felt confident or represented with Peter as my lawyer.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
