Absolutely one of the very best lawyers I've had the privilege to work with. Regardless of the issues involved Blake immerses himself in the case and works diligently to represent and defend his client. He doesn't just give it lip service, he really works to defend you. My choice.

Blake was my attorney in September of 2004. My case involved Doctors testifying against me in court about a person with mental problems. Blake bought medical books and really studied about the subject he would be asking the Doctors about. He blew them away with his knowledge and left the Doctor telling Blake "you know more about this than I do". He was always straight forward with me and YES I would use him again in a heartbeat. Chris Bryant represented me recently on a public intoxication & speeding charge. This was my first exposure to the criminal court system & Chris made the experience as painless as it possibly could have been. His communication with me throughout the process was consistent and informative. Chris displayed great skill in the courtroom and his rates were extremely reasonable. I credit Chris for the favorable outcome of my case and highly recommend him if you are in need of a criminal defense attorney.

Brandon Moffitt was my attorney over the course of about a year. He solved several issues for me related to a complicated probate case . Several attorneys were involved and I was in over my head legally. He was my primary contact and counselor regarding contracts, property settlement, will writing, gas and oil rights....everything that "came up". He resolved conflict between family members and prevented disputes during a difficult time. He is a calming, professional person, willing and capable of putting out fires. He stayed with my case until probate ended and the issues I had were resolved enough to proceed without an attorney. In other words, he saw things through and made them better while saving time and money. His fees are more than fair and he was careful about never overcharging. He often answered the telephone personally and if not, always returned calls promptly. If you've ever hired an attorney, you know how rare it is to have an open line of communication. I appreciate that most of all. I would hire him again with confidence. If you want personalized, professional, timely attention along with resolution of a legal problem, you want Brandon Moffitt.

BKM has the best traits of two generations of attorneys. He has a very modern office with some of the best legal software resources at his disposal. He leverages his skill with technology to get things done very fast - without taking any 'shortcuts'. That said, BKM is not just another attorney with a smart phone, he is also old-school connected with the chamber, the bar association and other legal associations. This is a unique and awesome combination! I have often found that if BKM doesn't know the answer- he knows where to get it from. If you are paying by the hour- this helps keep the price down, and if you are paying for a fixed-fee;

John Mikesch is an outstanding attorney and I simply cannot fit my testimonial of the accolades and commendations I have for him into the character limits of this review page. If you want an attorney that is well known and respected by every judge in Northwest Arkansas, John is your guy. It was amazing to see multiple other attorneys and even a police officer come up to him after court and tell him what an amazing job he did. He is truly an artist in his field. He is extremely knowledgeable in law practice, an elegant orator in the court room, and a brilliant legal strategist. He gracefully balances all of those legal-bulldog traits with compassion and understanding for what his clients are going through. He does this by taking the time to explain difficult to understand legal processes, and always suggesting his best and most sensible course of action, while still making you feel comfortable going some other route, if you wanted to for some reason. His respone time is uncanny, and every time I sent him an email or text message, I would get a reply within minutes. I can't thank or praise John enough, and he has my highest recommendation as an attorney.

This is the most straight forward and hard working attorney I have ever came in contact with. He doesn't tell his clients what they want to hear. He tells them the truth and what to expect and doesn't hold anything back. Some may not care for the way he conducts business with his clients, but he wants his clients to win and in order to do so he breaks them down and builds them back up so they will know what to expect in court. If you have any sort of domestic relations case, this is by far the best attorney to seeking legal counsel from in the state of Arkansas.

I have retained Mark Mobley twice, with a couple of decades in between those two occasions. However, I have spoken with him many times through the years regarding a variety of things, some regarding criminal law, probate issues as well as many other things from simple legal matters to complicated political issues where I wanted his opinion on certain things. I have also known many people who have hired him to represent them in a variety of matters. I think that he is the best criminal defense attorney in my area. I find him to be quite motivated, smart and quite frankly arrogant, which I believe is something anyone should want in a criminal defense attorney. A person who is good and knows it. A person that will give everything they have to defend you if for no other reason than self preservation. I must say that Mark is very nice, as long as you do what he tells you to do. In my case there have been a few times, he would say many, where I talk too much. Those are the times that I have regretted the most. When I interrupt him, is when I am not hearing what may be the information I need to solve my problem or at the very least, lessen my problem or its consequences. I cause myself to miss the very information I am paying him for. I think that Mark Mobley is fantastic and I could not recommend him on any higher level than that. I think he is a brilliant, sometimes brash, sometimes sweet gentleman that if you are in trouble with the law, the perfect attorney that can get you out of a jam.

Mr Ballard was patient and matter-of-fact. I couldn't have been the easiest client (questions, unnecessary comments/"corrections", etc...), and he saw me through to the end of a complicated and tedious trial process. In the end, Mr Ballard ensured that justice was served, and I never served a day or paid a dime toward the false charges that were brought against me. Thank you again, Terry, for all that you did for me and my case! Have a Blessed New Year!

Mr. Files represented me as the defendant and custodial parent in my paternity, custody, and child support case. I found him to be patient, collected, thorough, and attentive in his legal counsel. He was quick to respond to my emails when needed. I always felt that he was on my team. He is not one of these lawyers who will fill my head with what I wanted to hear just to make a buck, but what I needed to hear to be reasonably prepared for this process. I found him to be very rational, honest and upfront. In the end he helped to represent my position with the judge regarding my ability to protect my child from her father's alcoholism and general unfitness while still allowing for an opportunity for him to have the healthiest possible relationship with her as I requested. His thoughtful counsel and representation earned us a very satisfactory final ruling to meet my family's needs despite having three different judges presiding over our case.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
