I had a criminal and civil cases for a car accident because I was charged with driving with a suspended license and I rear-ended the other car. I wanted to avoid jail time, and Attorney In-Chul Sohn negotiated a deal on the first court date (Class B) for just a small fine. I was very happy. He also took care of the threat of a lawsuit from the other driver. Actually, I received a traffic ticket, too, for that accident, and Attorney Sohn arranged for a small fine. So, he took care of 2 criminal charges and 1 civil case with very little I paid in fine. I was extremely happy with the way Attorney Sohn took care of all the problems.

John is an exceptional lawyer and his staff is A1. John fought for me from start to finish of my case (Federal Drug & Conspiracy Charges) and we WON! John is not one of those attorneys that are just here to get your money, he is a very compassionate person and truly cares about his clients. I cannot express how much I am thankful for the work John and his staff put into my case. He never promised me anything except that he would fight for me, and he did just that and won my case. He stays in contact with you, and informs you of everything that’s going on throughout the case, which means a lot when your life is on the line. I recommend this lawyer 100%

Both Bob and Brad Loper helped me through, not only the darkest times and mistakes of my life, but were just very caring and so down-to-earth! Always called to check on me! I just feel so blessed for these two! I've never been in trouble in my life but when I did, they had my back more than anyone that I've ever known to have some legal trouble! They are the best! They know the court system and they are so honest in a very caring way! I know a lot of people choose court appointed attorneys and have a pretty bad turn out. These guys will have your back no matter what. They explained the law to me and just helped me progress through some personal hardships! I am sure I'd be in jail right now if it weren't for these guys! Their honest, incredibly knowlegeable and just know so much to help anyone. I was never in trouble, but at the age of 47, embarrassingly enough, got arrested. It happens to more people than I ever thought! But these two, I'm so blessed I found them, because not only did they not make me feel ashamed, but were so full of support and still are!! I don't know what else to say except I would HIGHLY recommend this law firm and both Bob and Brad. Most nightmares that I've heard about are through court appointed attorneys! These guys spend the time with you because they care!!! I know people who have had to spend time in jail because they didn't have the right counsel ... trust me, when you have someone you can lean on for advice and the best advice, it makes a difference! Being on probation is scary, but having a genuine law firm to back you up, is not only comforting, but means the world, and has truly saved my life!!

There are not enough words to express the gratitude my family and I have for Mr. Josh Schaffer. We worked with him for almost two years and never once did he disappoint us in anyway. He is prompt, thorough, and will never make you feeel "rushed". He singlehandedly saved our family and we will forever be grateful for him. He got a large felony case dismissed because of his thorough research. He investigated every avenue possible and was able to keep our family whole. I highly recommend Mr. Schaffer. He is so very trustworthy, kind, and has a true passion for his work. Look no further, I would never trust anyone the way we trust Mr. Schaffer.

It was evident he gave thought to my case before we met at the courtroom door. He was easily accesible by phone and rates were not unreasonable. Above all, he knew the law which in the end helped support my case.

A year ago I had a lawsuit and I've went through a few lawyers in my case and I didn't know how hard it was to find an attorney to even return your call or at least do what there supposed to do, I almost gave up in lawyers and I couldn't believe how they got away from a lot of things until I found Mr.Kretzer , I can tell the difference when he answers my emails and calls ,Even if he doesn't answer calls himself his secretary always answers even after hours and on the weekend he has an answering service that give him the messages and he calls me right back ,I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for an active good lawyer .

I had no place else to go and Dan was busy but he took my case. He worked me into his schedule. From day one he was upfront with everything. He kept me informed on everything. He gave me suggestions on how to approach things if they did not go the way we expected them to go. Dan is very conscientious, hardworking and thorough on everything he does. He leaves no stone unturned. Dan took the time to listen to what I had to tell him. Some of the things I did not understand Dan explained them to me in different ways until I told him yes I understand now. Dan is on the level and is more then a fair person. I would not hesitate to recommend Dan to a friend or anyone else who might need his assistance. Dan did more for me then he will ever know.

I hired attorney Ashworth to assist in a very complex case spanning two states. She worked seamlessly with counsel in Virginia to resolve a child support issue. Two counsels, two different child support agencies and one very difficult case; she masterfully worked the problem. Communicating directly with the agencies and counsel to stop the already overpaid support she saved me time and frustration in what was already in the tens of thousands of overpaid support. I cannot thank you enough for your swift response and assistance in navigating the Harris County Courts. If you are looking for an attorney who embodies what it means to be a Texan – look no further. She is a straight shooter and will not waste time. She responds swiftly, and will represent you fully. Thank you Attorney Ashworth!

Paul is a consummate professional. Among the many attorneys and law firms that I interviewed for my matter, Paul stood out among all of the rest and chose him based on his experience and clear understanding of the complex securities issue I had presented him. As a professional with a background in retail securities, I had spoken to many attorneys before Paul who didn’t even seem to speak the basic language related to general securities issues, yet Paul understood from day one of our initial conversation. Extraordinary timely responses to my phone calls, questions and emails and overall excellent follow through . His willingness to listen, pay attention to the minute details of the matter and stay on task through by keeping in regular communication via phone and email with me truly sets him apart from the many in his field. I would recommend Paul as it pertains to specific securities matters without hesitation.

I never leave reviews for anything, but if this review will help someone that was in my position find a competent attorney that GENUINELY cares to represent them, then my goal is accomplished. Attorney Jennifer Gaut is the type of attorney that takes your case personally and not just like "another file". She was very attentive and patient during my free consultation with her and got working on my case right away even though she was swamped with other cases. I found her to be very organized and kept me in the know all the way. I am a Canadian with lots of family living in the US and she was proactive in making sure my charges don't hinder my future plans of migrating to the US. She worked hard and pointed out to the DA that I was indicted wrongly in the first place and she took her time through the complicated paper trail and cleared me from the mess. The charge against me got dropped to the very bare minimum - Forgery State jail felony down to a Hot check class C misdemeanor without a fine! She got my case over on time for me to head back to Canada without overstaying my immigration parole. I am glad she represented me and should I do it all over, she'll still be the one I'd call.

I was charged with an extremely serious crime (2nd degree felony) which I had only a very hazy recollection of committing. When I was able to evaluate the severity of the charges I was facing, I was distraught and bewildered. I had called around town and spoken to several attorneys, among whom I felt varying degrees of comfort. James was working late at one of the offices I had called and kindly agreed to meet and discuss my case with me long after business hours were over. James was able to break down the case and draw parallels between other cases he had seen and what possible defense strategies would be. He was extremely candid about possible outcomes but also provided a very professional level of optimism which led to me choosing him and another attorney in the same office. Through diligence and hard work, James and my other attorney were able to achieve a “no-bill” with the grand jury, effectively dismissing my case. James is an outstanding attorney and achieved the best possible outcome while simultaneously supplying hope and a professional friendliness that was much needed during a stressful time. Upon receipt of the “no-bill”, James was also instrumental in having an item of great monetary and sentimental value that was interred as evidence returned to me. If you are facing criminal charges, I could not more highly recommend James. He was an extremely accessible source of support during the investigation of my case and an invaluable ally in the courtroom.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
