Mr. Hamilton is handling my divorce case, his office staff especially Natalia has made this difficult time so much easier for me. I am impressed with the level of compassion both Mr. Hamilton and all his staff have. It is the beginning of my case so although I have a limited amount of experience to base this review off of I will say in the last two months of me hiring Mr. Hamilton his staff has kept me up to date regarding my case & even fought on my behalf when I thought the court order mediators office was rude & unresponsive. I would recommend Mr. Hamilton, he has given me great advice & he is not "money hungry" when he thought something was worth fighting for he's let me know & when he thought I should back off of something of less importance to save money he again let me know. Mr Hamilton allowed me to make payments on my retainer fee and even went to court for me when I only gave him 2 days notice! I hope he keeps this attitude & his current staffing they are A+ I really am impressed. I called alot of lawyers went to a bunch of consultations but I am positive I've choosen the right team. The only reason I gave 4 stars on trustworthy is because we havent gone very far on my case, just setting up visitation & child support at the moment & I dont want to give a false review but so far based on my experience I really do trust his judgment, he seems to actually care about me & my children. His staff even remembers their names & asks me how they are doing when they call! It's the little things really.

To say Kelly and her team were amazing is an understatement. From the time I first called until everything finalized they went over and beyond to make sure I felt comfortable with the process, all my questions were answered and performed high quality work. Kelly truly cares about her clients - guides you to informed decisions, represents you well, fights for your rights and handles herself professionally. I am pleased with the outcome of my case. If you need an attorney, this is the attorney office you want representing you!

Mr. Silvertrust helped me out several times with crafting "legal-ese" pages for some contracts I needed assistance with, and also with counseling me on separate legal matters, for which he went out of his way to research creative solutions. I also know that he is an excellent listener, problem solver, and member of the exclusive Tristate Bismark society for exceptional barristry. On one occasion he helped me rebuild my spaceship console, during which he advised me on matters pertaining to the legality of regenerating Velocirapator DNA in the lab. I am very grateful for his delicate expertise on the subject.

Jeff handled my divorce and I couldn't have asked for a better attorney. He's experienced, thorough and will work hard for you every step of the way. When my wife filed for divorce I talked to a few lawyers but i didn't feel comfortable with any of them until I met jeff. I feel like there's a real lack of quality attorneys in the algonquin area, but Jeff is definitely a cut above. I highly recommend him.

My husband and I retained Mr. Ryan Connor of Burnside, Johnston, Connor & Jensen to represent my husband in a criminal defense matter. The litigation process can be draining at times but Mr. Connor was always willing to answer questions and provide legitimate, reassuring explanations for his answers. We did not expect this case to go to trial, but my husband was not willing to plead it down to a lesser charge because he was innocent of the charges brought against him. This involved a dispute with a bitter family member and Mr. Connor understood the sensitive nature and emotions involved. Mr. Connor believed in his client and assured us he was prepared to fight it all the way. As the trial date approached, Mr. Connor kept us informed of any new developments or concerns. On the day of trial, we felt comfortable that we were as prepared as we could be under the circumstances. During trial, Mr. Connor excelled beyond any expectations we had of him. He was confident, direct, organized, well spoken, and knew the case inside and out. As a result of Mr. Connor's hard work, my husband won his case which we thought would be nearly impossible. Mr. Connor was able to reveal the truth in a tactful manner bringing much needed relief and comfort, not only to us, but also to the family members who were called as witnesses and many other family members who had been affected by this case.

From the first time that my wife and I met with Mr. Kelly, he gave us a feeling of confidence, and my being an engineer this is something difficult to achieve with me. He listened to everything we had to say and never once gave us the feeling that there was a timer going, as with some other lawyers. He was very thorough in going over the pros and cons of doing the estate planning and what we wanted to achieve by doing this. He went over in detail everything we talked about and made sure that we understood everything. We were very impressed with his knowledge and warm and caring attitude.

I had IL state try take my license twice after I plead guilty because lack of courtroom knowledge, she went in and clear it all up and got everything straight. Amazing! I was referred to Mr. Malin by a VERY reputable criminal defense attorney in both McLean and Livingston Co (Illinois) whom recently retired. He assured me that Mr.Malin would be excellent council to represent me. He stated that “I would need someone who was going to be a good attorney on both ends.” Referring to McLean and Livingston Co. I was very nervous about the charges I am facing in both counties. Hours and hours of google research and YouTube videos on characteristics of a good criminal defense attorney, I was very relieved to know that I saw all them qualities in Mr. Malin. I’m very appreciative of the time and effort he has put forth in explaining everything to not only me but taking time to speak with my husband and explain to him as well. I appreciated that. I’ve not dealt with legal issues much in life until recently and I appreciated having my husband aware to help explain to me so we were all able to get a better understanding. I feel that having him for representation has been truley a breath of fresh air for my family and I during this difficult and stressful time. It certainly has helped eased a lot of stress when myself and husband feel confident with our representation and he’s been what we feel going the going the extra mile with research and compassion twords what we are dealing with. I recommend this attorney.

So this is my second attempt to review this excellent lawyer. Let me make it clear. He was an active participant and contributor to a suppression hearing that directly led to the dismissal of my and my co defendant's charges. He did serious research and direct courtroom examination of an errant cop who failed to properly certify his narcotics dog to IL State standards. If you want to get off, this guy will find the way. If you want to cop a plea, go pay less elsewhere.

In early 2008, I was arrested at an anti-war protest and faced misdemeanor charges. I was young, and it was the first time I had ever been arrested. Melinda Power represented me and immediately explained what was a confusing process to put me at ease. I could tell she was deeply committed to social justice and she saw defending activists and marginalized people in society as an important way to push for change. She put her whole heart into my case and did an excellent job at trial. I would highly recommend Melinda to others facing criminal charges, or those who have had their constitutional rights violated by the police and wish to initiate a civil lawsuit.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
