I made a very bad choice to drive after a couple drinks and ended up getting a DUI. It was a horrible experience and was faced with some pretty difficult consequences. I found Bill Traynor through a friend and he went to work vigorously defending me. Through all his efforts my case had a happy outcome that could have been so much worse. A very trustworthy lawyer.

Outstanding criminal lawyer. Interviewed three before picking Traynor regarding my domestic battery charge. Case went to trial. He destroyed my wife on the stand. (She was lying) Did a number on the prosecutor, too. Never want to go through again, but if I did, I'd call Bill again...

Our family had the privilege of meeting Berry early in his career. Throughout the years he has provided us and our immediate family and friends with the best representation money can buy. Not only is he reasonable but honest. Feel free to attempt to find another lawyer with the same characteristics. You won't !! It isn't possible in ones lifetime. He is simply one of a kind and by far one of the smartest individuals you'll ever get to meet. I assure you'll never be disappointed and always treated fairly, reasonably and honestly. Mr. Cristopher Langone was very helpful and attentive regarding my problem. He asked very good questions that helped me see what the other side might potentially have on me. We spoke for well over an hour and not once did I feel the need to rush or like his time is running out. Was very cordial and respectful. Would recommend!

Through Mr. Langone I was able to bring a class A misdemeanor down to a petty crime with only a fee for the court of ~$250 and 40 hours of community service. Everyone else who I know who has been to court for the same problem as i have has had to do at least a few sessions of driving school and has paid usually twice as much. He knew how to handle the case and through his expertise I was able to get over it with minimal difficulty. Highly recommended

I retained Attorney Scott Marquardt to help me get relief on a criminal case through a pardon/expungement. I faced a case I never should have been convicted of and could not find many lawyers who understood the unique circumstances of that situation. Scott was always very kind, open-minded, and willing to listen carefully to my case. He had no problem taking it on and immediately assigned a team of attorneys to review and draft my petition for clemency. Clemency is an extremely hard process for anyone to get relief, but Scott has never given plan and said he never plans on giving up as long as he's practicing law. While we certainly do not know what the outcome of my petition for a pardon/expungement will be, Scott is always thinking of new strategies that might help getting a favorable outcome on my petition. Furthermore, Scott has also tried other avenues to find relief such as sealing and expungements through the Court system. Scott and his team of attorneys have written brilliant legal arguments on my behalf, and he is still hopeful that some day I might find relief on my case. The legal system and courts make no promises to anyone, but I feel very good that I have Scott and his wonderful team of lawyers working on my case. Not only has Scott and his firm helped me with clemency, but I have faced other legal troubles during this time. Scott has always been willing to listen and truly wants to help with my situation. My family and I are very thankful for all the work he has done on my behalf. For these reasons, I would strongly recommend Scott Marquardt and his firm in the areas of executive clemency and criminal law. I feel better situated now to getting a positive outcome on my cases than I did prior to hiring Scott.

Me and my newly wed husband sought services for a small claims matter. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and unlike most lawyers not a lier or a cheat. His price was extremely fair for the case also. Att. Leinen's hired job was to regain materials that totaled over three thousand dollars. He fully handled every aspect of the case from having the defended served with papers, to handling communications between the two parties, and also alternative routes that can be pursued to fulfill the clients', our, needs. He successfully gave a proper approach to our situation and even explained his own shock that it is rare for a client to receive a good of outcome as we received.

I hired Tom for a federal criminal defense about 12 years ago, and he and his staff have always had my best interests in mind, despite the notoriety of the case. Simply put, he just knew I needed competent help and welcomed me when others would not. He knew the ins and outs of the courts and all of the personalities of the judges and prosecutors, what would work and what would not. Tom was not afraid to take on the prosecutors when needed. And, indicative of his great character, he stuck with me long after my money had run out. We still keep in touch to this day. You can't go wrong with Tom.

I hired Mr. Brindley in 3/2013, for my sons criminal defense, Mr. Brindley replaced Joe Lopez (which my son had hired in 4/2012) For one year, Lopez pressured my son to accept a plea agreement that was not acceptable and he did not do anything for him, he has focus on the Peterson Case. Kept making promises that we are going to trial etc.etc. which it was all a bluff. after one year of waiting and my son sitting in prison. I checked over 25 cases on Lopez and saw that he did not file many motions for his clients, all he did was a plea agreement and a sentencing memorandum. After all verifying all cases, Lopez was fired! and Mr. Bridley took over the case! My son was not forced to accept the 1st offer that government and Lopez wanted to give him. He is home this summer 2014. Its very difficult to trust attorneys. After all the research, I recommend Mr. Brindley to fight and not give up on your behalf.

I was in a very unique situation and had my driver's license suspended for a whole year due to a misunderstanding where a police officer thought I had a fake ID. I was told by countless other lawyers in the area that deal with license suspensions that they have never heard of such a situation, that I had no case and that I would be wasting my money trying to fight the (in my opinion) wrongful suspension. Todd took on my case with optimism and no judgement. He was very professional and a pleasure to work with. He helped me through the process of a formal hearing at the Secretary of State's office. Best case scenario, we were hoping for my year long suspension for a fake ID to be changed to a 3 month suspension for underage drinking. I ended up getting my license back and not having to serve a 3 month suspension either. My expectations were absolutely exceeded and I highly recommend Todd as a legal representative.

He is a very good listener, which is why I hired him. (not always comfortable discussing problems with strangers) He works quickly and continued to communicate with me on the status of my case. Alan got me in and out of a court date quickly. I had an aggravated speeding charge (35+ over the limit) which in Illinois was a Class A misdemeanor without the possibility of court supervision. This means it was more serious than a DUI, stealing $1000 or punching someone in the mouth. He was extremely confident in the courtroom, and was immediately familiar to the judge, the state's attorney and even some of the police officers. My court appearance started at 9 AM. By 9:20, he had me down to a petty offense, a $200 fine and court supervision. He took time to make sure I understood options and was comfortable. I felt reassured immediately and knew I was in good hands. After he had sorted out the charges, he spent time explaining why the law was the way it was, how it was going to change and entertained me briefly while I waited to pay the cashier. I continue to have a clean record free of convictions, and I have Mr. Davis to thank for that.

When hiring a lawyer, it's most often never a "great" moment in your life. David Franks has stood by me through the most awful moments of my life. Never once have I felt that Mr. Franks is "in it for the money". I honestly believe Mr. Franks CARES about each and every client he represents. Yes, he can be a bit snippy at times, but that only happens if you are trying to tell him how to do his job. When I first (yes, first) hired Mr. Franks, I was a mess. Scared to death. Question after question and doubt after doubt. Mr. Franks has been a successful lawyer since 1989! Believe me, this man knows EXACTLY what he's doing so please take my advice (young, first time offenders, especially) and let him do his job. He WILL do EVERYTHING possible to help you. It may take a VERY long time to get through your case, try to be patient and always keep in mind that Mr. Franks has his own strategy. Don't question it. Let him do what HE thinks is best for you. Dimitri and Marlowe- Mr. Franks' paralegals, have always been very helpful and understanding. David has been a wonderful lawyer and confidant throughout ALL my legal matters and I would NEVER recommend anyone else but him for their legal matters (provided Mr. Franks works with their particular legal issues) If not, please check their website. They have other lawyers on staff that work in different areas of the law- including divorce. WWW.FnRlaw.com. The reason I feel so strongly about Franks & Rechenberg is because (unfortunately) my relationship with their firm dates way back. I know them very well and they know me. Please trust me when I say you cannot go wrong when hiring from this firm. They are truly there to HELP you. That is VERY difficult to find these days. My best of luck to all of you that are in need of legal assistance. It is a very long, stressful time of your life. David Franks tries his best to take that load of stress OFF of your back and onto his. I believe he does this with every client he represents. To say this lawyer is "too expensive" is absolutely ridiculous. David Franks' dedication to his career vs. what he charges proves this is not about money. It is about the fight for what is fair.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
