I am from Illinois and went to College at Central. In 2017 I got a ticket in Pella. I hired Wes to make sure my license would not get suspended and insurance would not go up. I wanted to plea not guilty. He advised if we moved court date past my 21st birthday it would not be suspended in Illinois. We moved the court date back and I plead guilty. A few months later I get notice my license is suspended for 60 days because I got tickets within 24 months of each other. His excuse was "I saved you from one suspension instead of 2." and suggested that I should have known about the 2nd potential suspension. (If I knew this, I would have no need to hire him) Four years late I am still having to pay higher insurance rates because of this. If you are from out of state, do not use Wesley.

Wes handled my divorce very efficiently, and with great integrity. He kept me updated, telling me what I needed to know when I needed to know information. He helped me be completely prepared for hearings which gave me so much peace and ease under very horrible circumstances. He was kind, caring and offered options, outcomes and guidance all along the way. The costs, expectations, and most likely outcomes were accurate - no surprises. Other lawyers I consulted with came across aggressive and offered outcomes far exceeding what was fair and likely possible. He was able to represent me in a way that achieved all our goals and thus meeting (and even exceeding) my needs and expectations. He and his staff were very attentive - always returning my calls, emails and concerns with quick and thorough attention. I had complete confidence that I was being represented in the best ways possible.

Amanda was hired for a couple diffrent cases, she did a great job. Then was representing on my behalf in a car accident claim. The woman had ran a stop sign hit my father and I caused damage. I lost my job of 8 years due to injury. Had multiple surveys 75,000 in medical bills. Suffering from a brain injury i lost my home, job, kids, unable to preform daily task like I normally would. I left everything in her hands thinking under oath she would have my best intrest. She copied my signature from another document that I did not consent to. When I confronted her about it she became very defensive and started to use my disability against me. Things took a turn from there as I spoke my TRUTH and concerns given to me as a RIGHT and to not be used against me WRITTIN in the CONSTITUTION. I then told her that my concerns were valid and if from that moment forward if I had any questions about her character and contract I would have to kindly let her go off of my case and find new representation that has my best intrest and my rights will not be violated. She got very aggravated and began to say with an attitude on speaker phone with witnesses on my end. That my feeling arnt validated because my judgement is off due to my TBI TRAMATIC BRAIN INJURY my family then took over on my behalf that what she was saying was cruel and inaccurate. She began to ask them if they was my new representation. They stated no . I then received a letter in the mail saying that she had dropped my case 2 months before Trial knowing the statue of limitations would be in full effect I didn't have the knowledge in due time to represent self. She put a 20,000 lien on me and put something into the system so I could not find any other counsel due to conflict of interest even out of town lawyers wanted to help me but couldn't violate whatever she had put in. When I had went to court against the other party I showed up alone unable to proceed because I didn't have a lawyer. My case was thrown out and the 1 million she promised me by Christmas was no longer. My pain and suffering wasn't enough from the accident or losing my father, house, kids, job, unable to do daily activities owning almost 100,000 in medical bills now having a 20,000 lien on me from her, not able to proceed with my case or being compensated for what I was owed. All because I stood up for my Constitutional Rights that she[ without a doubt violated] I ask that you think twice before hiring her or the firm behind her. We hire someone out of good faith in what they tell us not ever thinking this will be the devastating outcome. Look into who your hiring and who they say they are and who they actually are and they match. By the universal law every cause has an effect it has changed me for the better inside on the material I have nothing. I will stand true to my character always because of this. Lesson learned. Everything has a consequence so my wish is to help others avoid this if possible. Thank you! Sovereign

I do not recommend hiring this lawyer! He did nothing in my case! I was just sitting in court! He said two words and that’s it! I turned to another lawyer, he told me that my case could be closed with minimal financial losses!!! But not like with this lawyer everything is to the maximum!!! I do not recommend using the services of this lawyer!

Krisanne Weimer used to work for Legal Shield here in West Des Moines. Iowa. She does not even know how to work with Iowa Department of Human Services to help defend us and made us end up looking for another attorney to take her place. Fortunately, we found a very good attorney and won the case.... Hooray! But we learned the hard way of trusting an attorney like her ever again. She ruined our lives and made us suffer horribly. Neither would we want to join Legal Shield in the future!

when my son got murdered in 2004 i was so lds that i wanted only and lds lawyer. he met me in omaha. that was nice. he thought there was a big wrongful death suit. in the end he was not competent to handle the estate and quit leaving me hanging and sending me a bill for $10,000.00...yes, i said 10grand. he billed me more than the estate had in it. i was in shock over my son's death and he wrote me a letter telling me it wasn't his fault my son basically got himself killed. what a nice mormon guy. well, he may have gotten off the hook with Irina but i found his bishop and he was very nice. he told me to send him a copy of the bill and that took care of that. he has no morals but i didn't know at the time that mormon lawyers are just like the non-mormon ones. i was able to find another lawyer that charged me a couple of hundred dollars to do a lot of work and get my grandson some money too. that lawyer knew i had already been almost robbed so he was very nice charging so little which he did take out of the estate, but it was nothing.....for sure not 10K...he probably goes to the temple in omaha. maybe even after the consultation.

Mr Widdison finalized my divorce. He got the job done, but I don't see who would't - it was an easy case. However, the final invoice somehow turned out to be twice as much as initially discussed. Every attempt made to clarify the bill was dismissed. It's not about the money, it's about the moral character and his approach. Please be aware when making decision of appointing him to represent your interests. Research him, there is quite an interesting reading out there. Google Application of Widdison SD. I should have done a more thorough research before making my choice, that would have saved me a lot of headache.

Cami is never prepared for court always filing continuances for lack of preparedness. She failed on 3 separate occasions to get papers in on time causing my case to be prolonged. She called me to tell me she was about to file my papers then 2 days later I asked on an update and she again said she was just about to file them. When asked what happened to filing them 2 days ago all she said was she forgot to do it. She filed my paperwork in the wrong judicial branch causing a delay. She was fined by the Supreme Court for not having certain material turned in by the court ordered date. She was almost 2 months late filing it so they fined her which she told me nothing about it I received a letter from the court telling me. She was adamant that my case was in my favor and that the other party didn't have a leg to stand on. In the end it cost me thousands of dollars, delayed for more months than it should have taken due to her irresponsible behavior, and the outcome was nothing like she claimed it would be. I'm not upset about the outcome because in the end I ended up getting what I went to court for because of the other persons ignorance 5 days after the courts decision was made not credit whatsoever to Cami. I have since researched her And found 2 other reprimands from the Iowa bar assoc. She was constantly telling me how she wasn't sure on how something worked and had to research it. Her office staff seems to know more than her.

I am very impressed by how quickly Eric and his team were able to review all of the documents and information regarding my situation (I must add that my situation is very complex and unique) and within days he was on the same page as I completely understood the issues. Within a week Eric took action in my case and has been fighting in my defense ever since. Eric is on top of things, responds in a timely manner, is always very professional, his staff is always friendly when interacting with me, and most importantly he has remained loyal to me. It is hard to find a lawyer that works for you and stays loyal to you. I have hired several different lawyers for my situation and either they want to take the easy way out by taking shortcuts, or they would to talk me into doing things I don't want to do, or doing things I didn't know about just to avoid the extra energy it took to satisfy my wishes during my case and Eric is the first attorney out of them all that I am completely satisfied with. So satisfied that I hired him for another case that I am currently dealing with, he is currently working on 3 cases of mine and I couldn't be more relieved. Eric is very intelligent, and firm when handling matters involving my cases. Eric respects my requests and is always honest and direct when providing me with answers or information regarding my case. Eric's services are not cheap, but it's money well spent and well deserved. Once hired, Eric completed more progress on my case in less than a week, than any other attorney has the entire time (almost a year).

I retained Peter Berger for up to and including trial if it went that far. Mr. Berger told me he thought I had a 75% chance of acquittal at trial. When it came time to plea bargain, the prosecutor offered a lesser felony including being added to the sex offender registry. Peter told me they might bargain for a misdemeanor but they'd stick to the registry. When I told him that being on the registry was a hard no, he went back and negotiated. Next the prosecutor offered a alford plea to the same felony, without the sex offender registry. I told Peter no -- If getting off the registry was the harder negotiation, I wasn't going to take a felony. The prosecutor came back with an offer for two misdemeanors, no sex offender registry. Let me take a time out to state that to this day, I believe myself innocent. I can't discuss specifics of the case due to a 5 year no contact order. So with that in mind, I had to think about it. do I risk the "25% chance of hung jury or guilty verdict" or do I take the misdemeanors. At this point, on the phone, Peter Berger made it clear that if I chose to go to trial, he would no longer represent me. To be fair - and the only reason I gave two stars on this review, I had already made my decision before his statements. I would bite the bullet and take the two misdemeanors. I waited two years until the moment my probation expired to make this complaint. I will never get over this, it haunts me daily, and in particular I cannot let his threat stand without trying to make sure the world knows what they are getting in to when they consider retaining Peter Berger.

Anthony Gericke was a court appointed attorney for me after my arrest in the Winneshiek county. I was not represented properly by this attorney and I felt like I did most of the wormost l gathering evidence in my case against 3 officers that wrongfully arrested me. A dash camera in the cups vehicle was withheld from evidence even with it I had eyewitnesses of my arrest that stew never connected by my attorney for whatever reason despite being told numerous times and given context information. My case is still in the axial process all of the evidence that I have that was not admitted for whatever reason can only be added of my appeal fails. Overall I would not recommend this attorney even if he is court appointed, you can likely manage better on your own. He is so very difficult to contact and when you do end up meeting with him it is a complete waste of time.

Gericke law office is a general practice law firm located in Postville, IA. My business goal is to provide a broad range of legal services to a wide range of clients, including both businesses and individuals, throughout the greater northeast Iowa area. If you need a lawyer for the formation of a will, negotiating a lease or contract, litigating a breach of contract, income tax preparation or any other legal matter I will act on your behalf, aggressively and competently, to get you the results needed for future success. I will act on your behalf, aggressively and competently, to get you the results needed for future success. (1. Properly or sufficiently qualified; capable) i had him as a court appointed attorney for allamakee county Iowa and he did not even come close to acting aggressively and competently on my behalf like he claims he will on his website. he said he would send me copies of every thing he received from the court for my case and keep me in the loop with what was going on with my case on a regular basis but never did, he was also very difficult to get a hold of. (for example several voice-mails and emails sent and i wouldn't hear any thing from him for several weeks after those were left.)

Paid this attorney several thousands of dollars. Several years later learning more each day about the law he put absolutely no time into it. Most of them do not. I have witnessed it. The county attorney, public defenders as well as paid attorney have already decided prior to any pre conference trials. They all sit In the same room as they run you through the mill chatting amongst each other. If the prosecuting attorney is wrong the attorney are afraid to go against them.even if your rights were 100% violated.

Hired Jeff for two separate issues. He cashed the checks for retainer fees and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! To speak with him regarding the jobs he was hired to do I had to 'pop' into the office unannounced because he failed to return calls, failed to file originating paperwork, failed to respond to most emails and absolutely failed to represent on either issue. The responses I did receive via email were false promises of job performance that he repeatedly didn't do. DO NOT RECOMMEND! It is my belief that Jeff Smith is a THIEF/CROOK/SCAM and should not be allowed to call himself a professional nor an attorney.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
