Difficult to rate. Ended up giving 1 star. Would give a 5 star if based solely on the work actually done. But a 1 due to the following: The work he performed was well done and he accomplished what we needed until now when his license was suspended for 30 days. After looking into this, it appears he's been reprimanded previously. Communication is atrocious. Doesn't return calls or emails. Late filings. He was reprimanded on our case for not filing on time. Have not received any type of bill or itemization stating what he utilized our retainer for and then asked for more.

Jamie Hunter was court appointed for a Post Conviction Relief, for which I was incarcerated, on a criminal case in March of 2019. I needed a forensic analysis done on the police video. She indicated that she would do this, and I trusted her. My trial was scheduled for 2/19/ 20. I wrote her a letter in November or December of 2019 to inquire about the progress she had made on the video analysis, and to ask some other minor questions related to my case since my trial was approaching. Jamie did not respond. In February of 2020 I sent the same letter to Jamie as my trial was weeks away. I finally received my response by way of a scheduled attorney call at the prison five days prior to my hearing. Five days before my hearing, Jamie informed me that she was filing for a continuance and a motion to withdraw because she had a baby in January. She had my case for nearly one year and never once informed me that she would not be able to represent me, despite being fully aware of her pregnancy. She waited until the 11th hour to tell me that, because she had a baby the previous month, she would not be able to represent me. I was in prison and trusted her to do the necessary things for my case. I regret that. COVID-19 caused the courts to shut down immediately following the untimely notice of her actions. I am out of prison and STILL fighting my case. I wish I hadn't trusted her to work on my behalf as it turned out to be a huge waste of time. Also, I was ordered to pay nearly $900 in restitution for her 'service' (or, rather, lack of service). So, it was a waste of money as well. I do not recommend hiring her for a criminal case.

She was my court appointed attorney when my abusive ex husband (who was in jail) called my phone several times and I answered. Keep in mind even though I had a no contact order in place it was lifted for some stupid reason 3X his charges were completely dismissed where he was almost released prior to the state prosecution corrected it. But the jail was letting him dial out to my number because they claim P.O. was lifted. Because I answered the phone and the prosecuting attorney wanted my ex husband to plea he arrested me when I showed up to his court hearing to testify against him. So I ended up spending 17 days in jail for violating my own order of protection for a total of 12 counts which out of all those calls he was charged zero counts. Judge released me once I went before him and was shocked that I was in jail for violating my own order of protection. My attorney was absolutely NOT nice and rude to my family as well. Being appointed as my attorney I would have hoped she would have had an ounce of understanding of my situation but no. Felt like I was a habitual criminal who committed a heinous felony based on how I was treated. Who wants an attorney who judges us even though court appointed I am sure she does not have to take those kind of cases.

Poor attorney. Do yourself a favor, hire someone who actually cares. He talks as if he knows the law but doesn't completely or maybe he just didn't like me. Either way. Unprofessional. Do not hire him for a divorce case. He sided with my ex. I should have gotten a better settlement. Mike provide no guidance. My friends provided more information than he did. His memory is failing him. He couldn't remember what was said or done. He talked bad about me to my ex's attorney. Game player for sure. Don't waste your money. If I could give him no stars, I would.

I contacted Robert in 2016 to help me appeal my SSD claim. He came recommended from a neighbor and sounded like he would care at first. I have been following up with him for the past two years, to no avail. He is super slow to return my messages, if he does at all ,whether they be emails or calls. When he finally called me the other day, after three weeks had gone by, he blatently lied to me. I took it upon myself to "double check" Robert's claims that he was "working on it" - and called SSD and found out that after his name was added to my "file"" at SSA admin. That not a thing had been done on his part to help me. SSA said that NO activity had been done on his part!! None! So basically I've spent the last two years trusting his word that he was "ON It", what a bunch of BS. My faith in attorneys is blown, this man needs to be disbarred if this is his "way" of helping people such as myself. Now, I'm told that I need to start all over again.

Terrible experience! Not only was he extremely combative, in the courtroom he wasn't much help at all. The only thing that the judge had said to him was, and I quote, "Mr. Becker your mudding the waters." You're better off defending yourself. That's basically what I had to do. And does not follow through with the plan. Will not admit if he’s made a mistake. And getting another of his client’s paperwork is a Big mistake and privacy issue. Tells you he’ll check on things and never does. Bottom Line he’s terrible! Giving him money to represent you is like throwing it out a window. Hard Pass. Here is what i opined after a brief initial consulatation,.. In one corner, you have the Lawyers who are scholars, writers, logical, rational minds who genuinely find the philosophy and application of law enjoyable. These lawyers respect the rule of law, and understand why maintaining its utmost integrity is important for the justice system. These are the lawyers that protect their integrity and refrain from making frivolous or specious arguments for the sake of protecting their client’s interests. These lawyers engage with their colleagues and judges respectfully, maintain humility about the aspects of the law they don’t know, and work hard for the sake of maintaining a stable justice system. These lawyers actually give a f*ck about the tremendous responsibility that has been placed on their shoulders. Without honest lawyers, our system would fail. It arguably is failing as we speak, but i digress. In the other corner, you have William E. Robak, the greedy, soulless type who believes that winning is the reason for living. This lawyer is very common, because the profession attracts a high percentage of psychopathic, narcissistic characters. Some lawyers believe it is their job to manipulate, obfuscate, and generally help their clients get away with stuff. They take pleasure in filing motions after motions to clog up the justice system, and they take pleasure in billing their clients hundreds of dollars an hour in pursuit of a case that they will not win. These lawyers give everyone else a bad name because there are so dang many of them.

I knew it was a mistake to contact Jamie after recalling his disciplinary action in 2016 but I thought I’d give him a chance. My initial consultation with Jamie consisted of a spontaneous, random five minute phone conversation in which he listened to absolutely nothing I said. Instead he acted like I couldn’t understand an elementary concept that he was purveying. He seemed more interested in the sound of his own voice and collecting the $20k that he quoted me rather than actually considering how he could be of assistance. He went on to brag about how he had been an attorney for 13 years (with an asterisk*) as he gave out incorrect information about possible courses of action. Obviously this was not a pleasant or productive experience. Fortunately, I have found a much more informed attorney that has my best interest at heart versus his ego and his wallet.

Being from out of town we contacted John Wunder by referral. This time is during the Corona Virus epidemic. We paid the initial $250 consultation fee and was only able to correspond with him thru email. We would ask John to please call us to talk but I think he may have responded to two request by phone. He really did not provide the family with much legal suggestions as to how to fight our situation. He only corresponded with the other attorney involved and gave us the options the opposing attorney offered. I was the family member of the deceased, I was the executor and trustee of the will involved. The complaint against me was a live in girlfriend of the deceased. Of course during this time another $500 dollars was involved in John fee. John went from a consultation to hire of course and still would not correspond with me by phone. I never met this man face to face! John did even less for me and my family after the hiring fee. I definitely would not ever hire or even consult with this attorney ever again and would not recommend him for any type of situation!!!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
