She is a beast. I was wrongfully charged and she got it over turned after conviction due to a lying Mt PP officer Dykstra. She's now representing my son on serious charges and it's what keeps this mother's/ grandmother hopeful.

If I could leave negative stars I would! Called hoping to have a consultation with this attorney and instead was sent to his assistant who wouldn't even listen and was telling me I had to hire the attorney first before getting the attorney's plan or before the attorney would tell me what they could or would do with my case. I have no idea if this attorney is any good or not because I wasn't even able to get past his rude and snotty assistant!!! Didn't want any info on what happened wanted money up front. Unreal

I don't usually write reviews that pertain to businesses that handle personal matters for me. However, Tom and Cassandra are most deserving of recognition for professionalism, knowledge in the field of family law, and timeliness. I agree with the other positive reviews about Tom in that he is direct with his advice and will make sure you know all of the possible outcomes. Tom and Cassandra both have a way of keeping meetings short and uncomplicated. Tom works very well with Cassandra-who also gets straight to the point. They both return phone calls in a reasonable time frame and find time to schedule last minute appointments in a squeeze. I will hire this firm again if I have to. My only complaint is that I didn't hire them sooner.

When my case was done, he slapped his hands together and thought, "she took a plea, now she's the p.o problem." You can't even ask a question without him telling you, well you took a plea, your p.o. will know more. You took a plea ask your p.o. it was like my case or i didn't even exist, or mattered. If i wanted to talk to him further, he acted like i needed to hire him again, He gets annoyed if you call him alot.. if you have never been in trouble, I would recommend not going with him. He acts like your case, let alone you in general aren't important.

I initially hired Jason with high hopes of resolving my custody battle effectively, but my experience was disappointing and frustrating. From the beginning, it felt as though Jason's approach was influenced by the fact that the opposing attorney was more expensive and perhaps more formidable. In the months leading up to the trial, Jason seemed more focused on persuading me to accept proposals from the other side rather than actively fighting for my rights. His advice on multiple occasions leaned towards settling rather than going to trial, suggesting that a trial would result in me getting even less time with my daughter. His main focus appeared to be on negotiating a lower child support amount rather than advocating vigorously for my custody claims. When we did proceed to trial, Jason performed well in presenting my case and did successfully expose several lies from my ex-husband. However, despite this, the outcome was not in my favor. Jason ultimately concluded that my ex-husband would retain primary custody because my daughter was well-adjusted and happy, which seemed to undermine the hard work and evidence presented during the trial. While Jason's courtroom performance was commendable, the overall handling of my case, especially leading up to the trial, left me feeling that my best interests were not fully prioritized. The final legal decree did not reflect the positive progress I had hoped for, and the emphasis on minimizing child support payments over securing a fair custody arrangement was disheartening. I hope this feedback helps others understand the complexities of working with Jason and the importance of ensuring that your legal representative is fully committed to fighting for your custody rights.

Jamie Hunter was court appointed for a Post Conviction Relief, for which I was incarcerated, on a criminal case in March of 2019. I needed a forensic analysis done on the police video. She indicated that she would do this, and I trusted her. My trial was scheduled for 2/19/ 20. I wrote her a letter in November or December of 2019 to inquire about the progress she had made on the video analysis, and to ask some other minor questions related to my case since my trial was approaching. Jamie did not respond. In February of 2020 I sent the same letter to Jamie as my trial was weeks away. I finally received my response by way of a scheduled attorney call at the prison five days prior to my hearing. Five days before my hearing, Jamie informed me that she was filing for a continuance and a motion to withdraw because she had a baby in January. She had my case for nearly one year and never once informed me that she would not be able to represent me, despite being fully aware of her pregnancy. She waited until the 11th hour to tell me that, because she had a baby the previous month, she would not be able to represent me. I was in prison and trusted her to do the necessary things for my case. I regret that. COVID-19 caused the courts to shut down immediately following the untimely notice of her actions. I am out of prison and STILL fighting my case. I wish I hadn't trusted her to work on my behalf as it turned out to be a huge waste of time. Also, I was ordered to pay nearly $900 in restitution for her 'service' (or, rather, lack of service). So, it was a waste of money as well. I do not recommend hiring her for a criminal case.

Abendroth Russell Barnett handled our father's small estate. My brother and I were co-executors. Due to major complications involving disgruntled family. and the Covid pandemic, the estate took 5 years to settle. Ross was our lead attorney, he and his staff kept us informed, and advocated for the estate and was always available and helpful in spite of numerous unnecessary issues that arose. Ross and his entire staff were empathic, professional, knowledgeable and excellent advocates throughout and help us navigate the legal system and highly emotional issues with a sensitivity, yet pragmatic skill and a personal touch and achieved a satisfactory outcome which with our parents would have been content I would utilize them again, and highly recommend to anyone who needs Estate planning and resolution.

I SUGGEST DO NOT HIRE! Very unethical conduct. Violated ethics according to ethics rules of the Iowa Bar in representing me. The ethics violations handicapped my abilities to have a fair shot in divorce proceedings tipping the scales towards petitioner. I had to look up petitioners filings for myself. I could not get a response from attorney as to what was filled. Divorce funds utilized to get caught up to speed on the divorce. Proceeding to mediation stage at the time of hire. Half of my fund funneled out headed towards trial scheduling. In her own justifications abuse her power as attorney over disabled human, injected personal feelings of insecurity, and acted out in resentful conduct to remove herself as council at a very vital time in the proceedings. I am disabled and half my fund is depleted. Thus, hindered the ability to move forward with new council funds. Tricia is not a team player, and does not work well with a total legal team towards the best possible outcome in regards to the hiring client with a minor child and DV case in another state. Tricia stated in person meeting whiskey (SCREWBALL) is good in coffee. Attempted to convince me that the whisky bottle in office had changed color due to the sun. It appeared clear like vodka. I do not know if this is the issue with job performance ability. I am just stating my truth, facts, and observation. Hopefully my review saves a human from being taken advantage of during such a life changing event as divorce. Divorce involves safety of minor child with many personal assets. SUGGEST DO NOT HIRE! I will add the personal email demonstrating personal feelings of bitter resentment toward the legal team in another state working to keep my family safe.

Don’t waste your time they are only out for a quick buck and don’t really care about getting your case through to the end in your favor. My disability got denied but the whole report was full of half truths and lies wasn’t anything accurate at all . So naturally I want an appeal. They said they don’t go that far in the process. Well what good are ya if you don’t go to the very end and exhaust all resources. Now I have a bogus case full of social security workers lieing and I have to go find someone to pick it up and re-explain the whole thing to them. Totally unprofessional. I think if your working a case for some one and they get shafted and it’s chalked full of lies then it your responsibility to make sure that stuff is asked about and solved

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
