I used his law office for a family law matter. It would take him days to respond. I felt like i was representing my self while paying him the retainer. It was just plain terrible. Not knowledgeable at all. The only thing i liked about his office was his paralegal. She was kind and very helpful.

He told that he will represent my loved ones case. He was detained in Grayson County detention center. They gave him diabetic medication and insulin he was never diagnosed with diabetes. The nurse took it upon herself to do that. A month later he called to say that he is not going to represent him because he is retiring. But a year later I called and found out that he is still practicing law😡also found out that his previous lawyer contacted him and told him not to represent my loved one. All these lawyers are CROOKED 😡

Mr Kenealy represented me in a criminal defense in which he did very little to get his pay. He communicated via letters and sparse phone calls about the little amounts of work he was doing. He seemed to be ill prepared for a criminal case and in his plans for defense. I ended in taking a plea bargaining (my decision) because I had lost faith in his lawyer defense skills.

I hired Harry on the advice of a friend in the business, and it ended up being a big mistake. I ended up hiring another attorney half way through the case. His follow up was terrible, he wasn't prepared for hearings, he doesn't have the best interpersonal skills, and I definitely wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Other attorneys come in and speak with their clients before the court session. Not Harry. He spends his time talking to colleagues so you have no idea what is going on when your case does come up. The 2nd attorney I hired did more in two weeks than Harry had done in 6 months. This is just a personal observation, but to me it seems as though he's checked out. Simply collecting a paycheck and not doing anything to earn it. I did read some of the previous posts regarding him and did have my concerns. I was told you can't believe everything you hear on these sites which I still believe to be true. One or two disgruntled people shouldn't be able to destroy a reputation. Unfortunately in this instance, based on my experience, I have to agree with other reviews. He comes unprepared, doesn't follow up, and has no strategy. Much like another review the argument he used in the pretrial motion was laughable. I would have done a better job arguing the motion. It clearly stated in the police report I was in a center turn lane not once but twice. Last I checked there is nothing illegal about being in a center turn lane. These facts weren't brought up. No pictures were shown to show it was in fact a center turn lane. We had the officers hand drawn description of the lanes which he drew from memory. I wasted time and money with him. Buyer beware!

I'm going to echo a bit of what the other reviewer said in his review. If you hire Harry Hellings expect to talk to him during your initial consultation and then to see him the day of your trial. The rest of the time you will be communicating through and with an artificially endowed, blonde receptionist. At each of my several court appearances leading up to my trial a random attorney from their office showed up that I had never met or talked to before. If you are expecting somebody that is the least bit technically savvy, you really need to look elsewhere. Harry actually needed somebody to put the DVD of my arrest in the player at his office to view it. He asked me to take some pictures at the arrest scene. I showed up in court with them in digital format along with some video that I had shot, neither of which was used because Harry cannot handle the media system in the courtroom. In this day and age I find not being able to use the latest technology simply unacceptable. The argument that he used during my trial was almost laughable, and I think he just came into court and figured he was going to wing it. It will be two years in a couple of days since I got my DUI and not only do I still kick myself for hiring him, but I really kick myself for not asking for some of my retainer money back after the trial. It was just that disappointing.

Harry was HORRIBLE!!! Very rarely does he show up in court for your hearing,s he sends some otehr guy that is probably just out of law school. All he cares about is getting his money. I gave hime close to a $1,000.00, and he didn't do a thing. I asked his secretary after I paid the retainer ifhe would take payments for the balance, she said as long as you pay him something you should be fine. Well she was wrong, he filed a motion to withdrawl as my counsel and left me high and dry. I will be filing a motion for accounting myself and will request a refund. He does not care about his clients all he cares about is getting his money and that is it. I should hav known better, don't ever your this man as your attorney!!!!!!!!!

I sought legal counsel for family court; spoke to her on the phone for maybe 10 minutes and never has anyone made me feel so small, and discouraged. The way this woman talked to me was very uncalled for, and she sounded very similar the people I was going up against. Her aggression and poor judgment was directed at me and that was in no way what I expected. Her attitude was very "know it all" and blatantly rude.. And anyone who behaves that way will NOT represent me. The purpose of legal counsel in family court is to have someone who will fearlessly represent and fight for the rights you might not know you had, but I honestly did not feel she could do that for me. My fears seemed unreasonable, "impossible" and "stupid". She assumed I was some silly, bitter ex girlfriend wanting revenge and treated me as such.. Not a mother or protector. I will never forget the words she spoke to me. And if I can prevent another person from feeling the way she has made me feel by leaving this review, I will do so.

The most glaring deficiency in Mr McClain is his extremely poor communication skills. He is SLOW to return texts and phone calls, sometimes more than 2 weeks, he does not communicate that he is going to be out of reach (or so he expresses) because of frequent trips to his other home and office in Florida, and when meeting person to person he is so distracted, getting off topic and making comments that in no way apply to the needs at hand. I also doubt how much he really knows about immigration law even though he declares himself an Immigration lawyer. He often says things like, "Well, I think so." and "I'm not really sure about that." One would hope that a lawyer representing a person on something as serious as an immigration case would actually KNOW the laws.

Then the last court date he didn’t bother to show up. Never in his office, no texts no calls nothing. took my money and ran. So I then had to spend thousands more to hire a proper attorney. he is a crook.

I called around to find an attorney to help me resolve a child custody issue. Allan said he would be more than willing to help and he thought we had I good chance at the case. Regardless of the outcome in my favor or not he didn’t do anything. He filed a motion well turned out we were in the wrong court and had to refile in another court. Did that well than he took sides with the Mother of my child. It was a waste of time and money. I eventually got a different attorney who got the ball rolling and within a few months I had custody of my child. He was for the money not the client didn’t seem knowledgeable on the case and I was very displeased with his work.

I was arrested at my work on an asault charge, it was self defense. My ex boyfriend had been stalking me constantly and found me at a bar, I had a rough week and just need to relax. He convinced me to talk and forcibly took me for a walk. We argued and he wouldn't let me go so I got scared, I thought he was going to hurt me like he has before. My fight or flight kicked in, and I fought. I fought for my life. Ultimately he ended up roughed up, and I took off running. He threatened me online, I didn't think anything of it, I was finished, I couldn't fight anymore with him. I found Ryan through a friend and he seemed great, told me he's handled cases like this, etc. I hired Ryan, he seemed like this case didn't matter, he just didn't do much. He was always, very late, he had other important things to do than be my lawyer. I accepted the plea deal because I was scared, I was told this could be a FELONY, trial is expensive, nothing but negative, I had done placed all my faith and all my money into Ryan. I have never committed a crime in my life, not even a speeding ticket. He didn't hesitate to let me accept the plea, because it's a win for him and the district attorney, He does not care for his clients. I'm a proven fact of that. I lost my job, my degrees mean nothing, my life is ruined. I will mention he wrote off $500.00, guess he felt bad after the matter was over.

Save your money and go with a different attorney!!! I paid her up front, almost all the money I had, to get a divorce. Was told I would be divorced before the end of summer and here is it in the spring and she drops me without a word as to why, even when I call and leave multiple messages as to asking why? I never could get her on the phone before or after, she also wanted me to sign papers that were not even correct and I was told by an awesome previous attorney to "never sign the paperwork until it is absolutely correct!" I come to find out after that she didn't even file for me to be legally separated, do I'm starting from squareone.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
