Every year Boston magazine publishes the results for top attorneys in Boston from different legal specialties, from business and criminal law to family and employment law. If there are top 100 attorneys; Edward Wayland would be voted as the top 10 WORST attorneys in Boston. I'm very grateful I had made the right decision to terminate him for ineffectiveness of his counsel. About few years ago, To today's day, I never regretted (terminating) firing Edward Wayland. He almost ruined my life and my freedom. lack of communication, Failure to exercise diligence, ineffectiveness of his counsel, and Incompetence, Incompetence, and Incompetence. I'm in the process of filing a complaint against him to the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseer; Attorney and Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP), I think he should get his license suspended or revoked. (everything I stated here is true except for the top 10 worst attorneys).

I would like to share with everyone the extremely positive experience we had with Attorney Edward Wayland. We were "in the weeds" and getting "bullied" by opposing counsel. Edward just calmly and rationally cut through "the sideshow" intended to distract and turned the situation around 180 degrees. Most importantly Edward held to his integrity and achieved a "just" outcome. I am happy to speak with anyone directly as this is a real experience. You can contact Edward for my details.

We were stuck and hired Edward. He did an extraordinary job against the oppositions "shark" of an attorney. He kept his integrity and did not resort to the other side's unscrupulous behavior and tactics. He was able to persuade a judge, who was determined to agree with the misrepresentation, to see our honest presentation of the facts. I highly recommend Attorney Edward Wayland.

My daughter was pretty much forced to have to get a court appointed attorney, even though we thought we could represent ourselves and we were so pleasantly surprised at how kind and supportive Todd was and how he guided us in the right direction and had the charges dropped, and was very sympathetic And responsive to all our phone calls and emails ! We highly recommend using his services if need be!

I've been using attorney Anthony fugate since 2009. I've used him in numerous different types of cases. From a fight with osha to my wife making false accusations. In April of 2015 I retained him to represent me in an OUI 3rd offense. There was a probation officer out to get me and she pulled some strings and got me indicted to Salem superior Court. They were trying to give me a 3 to 5 year sentence. But I took it to trial. I lost, but I didn't get the 3 to 5. I got a straight 2 and a half years without probation. I was very impressed and happy with that. Thanks again David Sheehan

I gave Robert 3500 for my case. We had one zoom meeting worth 500. When I did not need his services I had asked for a refund. In the 2 years I have texted, emailed and called..no response. Actually yes..one response regarding his private life..however everyone has problems and need to keep work and homelife separate. With this said..still waiting for refund and will be contacting BBO. Really didn't want to go this route...but I have two boys to support..and 3000 to me...is not pocket change.

I can truly say he changed my out look on public defenders because i thought i was doomed. Not only was he laid back and cool but he was sharp, on point and didnt let anything slide. He knows his stuff and was very helpful. I wish they were all like him because he was different, not lazy didnt just lay down and take a deal he fought for what was right. Words can’t explain the gratitude I have for Scott and his amazing team. I was in an extremely difficult situation and facing significant jail time and lifetime license loss. Scott prepared me and my witnesses extremely well prior to my trial. He explained to me in advance that we would decide the morning of the trial if we were doing a jury or bench trial. We went with a bench trial and the outcome couldn’t have been better. In addition, Scott had the (2) State Troopers second guessing their own testimony and made them look extremely foolish. I highly recommend Scott and his team for all criminal justice charges.

Truly SAVE yourself and your family a lot of heartache and sadness DO NOT USE this lawyer !!! Scott is arrogant , my husband hired him and I was being held on a high bail ( this was 6 years ago would not have happened today ) the CM who held me knew who I had been accused of crossing and the bail was a punishment nothing else … first when we have Scott the money for a retainer we got NO paperwork … I should have known better but you are at your lowest , scared and upset and just want to go home ! Assured he would take care of it … he missed the 1st court date , sent another nobody from his office to the second and postponed the 3rd … he also PROMISED my husband he had it u see control and I would be able to go home , my WHOLE family based their decisions on this fyi … then of course it all went wrong … then he told me I had to sit another 90 days … if I called or my husband to talk about the case we were a pain , and subject to this guys absolute disdaine and anger … HE WORKED for us ??? Then finally 90 days comes and he says to me … wanna go home ! 🏠 I ready to go and then of course doesn’t happen … now he said again she can go home … by the way he does NOT do his job and does not check other issues we needed checked I ended up not going home for 2 years and he walked away not caring and he is awful do not use him he doesn’t care , he doesn’t do any real law work … he cuts deals and wants easy cases mine was not an easy case and had I been able to go home I do not think I would have spent any time there … also , he did not even do what he said he would as to what I plead to as he said I had to take the deal or risk a lot and pay a lot … but again he did not do the work , and he doesn’t want to so if you want arrogance times 1000 and a quick and slick cut a deal cash only no paperwork type of lawyer he is your man … if you want a legit lawyer who is honest , and does his job not just cut deals use Scott ! Cannot believe he hasn’t ended up disbarred yet !

I am In the process of filing a complaint with The Attorney and Consumer Assistance Program (ACAP) which is part of the Office of the Bar Counsel of the Board of Bar Overseers. Bridgett filed court forms such as subpoenas, motions for contempt, etc., without proofreading anything prior to filing. She used wrong dates, wrong spelling, and wrong address. Bridgett would constantly promise to do something by a certain time but fail to do so. She misplaced my ex's financial disclosure form given to her while in court and it was never submitted into our case file. My ex's attorney and another attorney of mine were both unsuccessful in getting Bridgett to return their emails/calls. Bridgett told me I would be refunded by 5/23/24. Then she told me it would be by 5/29/24. Then she told me by 6/2/24. Now I am forced to contact The Bar Association Fee Arbitration and The Clients' Security Board. I'm happy to share my experience with Bridgett in depth should you wish to know more. I highly advise you NOT to hire Bridgett as your attorney.

If attorney Bridgette James has, or is currently putting your children's lives in danger, I am going public today. I am a single dad of 2 boys whos' only constant in life has been me. Biological mother and boyfriend are criminals addicted to fentynyl who have been illegally keeping my children from me for months. When this happened, we went in to court for her to file a contempt order which she never did. Come to find out, she signed my physical rights away WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE, never filed for contempt, then refused to answer me for weeks until she told me it's not her problem. I fired her and she will not get off of the docket. She will not give me my money back that I desperately need for a new attorney. I need my children home and safe. HELP. This woman needs to be disbarred. I will keep posting this until something happens. And, again, i will be going public today. Save my children.

Attorney Moriarty you need to have some manners and be more professional as an attorney. You have no respect to speak to people, and you are very rude and interruptive as an attorney. Attorneys like you need to be disbarred for not having any ethics or any skills communicating with people. Your attitude as an attorney stinks very much. Attorney's like you think that because they have a license to practice, that people don't have the right to speak or that they can disrespect people talking. You need to go back to school and learn manners and learn to communicate to people on the phone, because the attitude is very nasty and hostile. Feel so bad for your clients. I will not recommend you as an attorney at all, because as an attorney you are very unprofessional.

No consumer law attorneys. No Attorneys return calls and resent the referral. I spent an entire year calling for Consumer Law Attorneys. Absolutely no one would help, lucky if I got a call back. They were all rude and refused to take a case EVEN if I paid them $1500.00 so believe me, I am quite right and it has been an absolutely horrific experience. 100%. Honestly, don't you think I would much rather be doing something else than BEGGING for help?? Do you seriously think I enjoy writing these reviews? My experience with the entire Legal System in Massachusetts has been a total nightmare. Noone knows how to defend a consumer, and the used car warranties that Thrifty Car Sales of Westfield and Springfield are total fraud. They simply do not honor the warranties they give and force the owner into a buy back without showing the owner the terms so they can refuse putting money out for repairs. We are closed Saturdays and I can't even get him to confirm being there anyways. I'm not wasting more money. It sincerely hurts me to even write this review as I had trusted this man. He knows I am engaged , trying to pay for a wedding and start a family but STIFFED ME. I really hope I can come on here and relay a positive outcome but I'm exhausted. What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
