Spoke with him for a consultation, good god I feel bad for the people that he is representing. This man doesn’t even know the 1st amendment of the constitution? How is he in business. He has the audacity to tell me it’s illegal to record in public without the permission of the people being recorded. That is completely untrue, so dashcams on vehicles are illegal? How do the police have body cams? How are people allowed to have cameras on their property that record public places? How is it that all the news and media stations are allowed to record without peoples consent, oh yeah because it is not illegal, and actually a constitutionally protected activity. Anything that can be viewed from the public, from a public eye, can also be recorded. Again, I don’t know how this man is in business. Please look elsewhere for legal advice.

He knew I was afraid about a minor legal matter. Therefore, he manipulated me to hire him and GIVE HIM MONEY when I did not need him or any lawyer at all. When I did need a lawyer later on, he would not and could not help since it was outside his sphere of criminal work. He is a lawyer who "works for himself" and is "money hungry".

Get everything in writing from this lady. She is very smart, but unfortunately opportunistic. She belongs more in criminal cases I would say, NOT in real estate matters which are already difficult in itself to complete with out her. My biggest problem with her was all the extra additional charges that she added on as the transaction went along. She did her job, and was professional for the most part, but she is guaranteed to take you for a ride for sure.

Ms. Knight ws supposed to represent me as a lawyer. I gave her $2,500. She extended my court date multiple times, never answered calls, never did what I asked her to do in terms of trying to get it dropped amongst other very unprofessional behaviors. On my day of arraignment a man was there unrelated to my case, but he was her client who was in jail and appearing in handcuffs and a prison suit, she told me she had no idea she was supposed to be in court for him and was there by chance because of my case, which means he would be sitting in jail for at least a few more weeks if she hadn't been there. Also, anytime I had court coming up she never answered my calls, always thought she wasn't going to show. one morning I was calling her trying to get a hold of her about my hearing that morning and she was not answering then texted me she was sick. The last time she didn't show at all. A week later tells me her license was suspended. Don't let her represent you once she has her license back because she most likely won't show up to your court case or answer your calls! Also, I doubt I am getting my $2,500 back and I am out of work right now because of what happened.

We had used Ken Shearn in the past and that was great. When I had more real estate work, I found out he had retired and was referred me to Mr. Arienti. It took so long for him to call me back. That continued to be a frustrating ordeal. I was buying two lots, nothing complicated but I wanted help trying to buy the other adjacent lots and despite repeated attempts, he never called me back. If he didn’t want to do it, he should have just told me that and referred me to somebody else.

B.S. again failed to provide documentation at the hearing that “ explained the contract language” and identify the lien and draft a more complete financial statement. As a result of B. Sheriff's deputies were serving a warrant at my house for a 475.00 medical bill. They wanted me to come say they could cuff and be big shots. They tried to enter my house through the front door. They basically broke in to my house I shut the door on them. They fell backwards. One ran up fast and sprayed pepper spray through hole in the door. They kicked the door their was a scuffle. I was a little disoriented after they spray the pepper spray right in my eye. I pushed them both down and escaped out of my back door . I jumped to fences and ended up on the street over. They were driving up and done the other street. It was like first blood I was John Rambo running. Finally I came out of the back of a house I was hiding. I turned myself in. The guy pulled the macho bust. Yelling to get on the ground guns pulled. All over a 475.00 medical bill. The 2 sheriff s deputies file four counts of assault and battery on me resisting arrest. One them got his shirt ripped off in the fight and the other guy got his hat stomp on. They also asked for restitution for their clothing. Dale took the case on a moments notice. They agreed to drop all charges. Dale was able to question the 2 deputies on the stand . He made them look like children. Case resolved that day. Dale did a super job. This was many years ago. I had to tell the story . I would highly recommend his services.

He initially was a Godsend... or so I very wrongly believed. After our first meeting in the court lock-up, when he told me how he was going to help me, everything changed, quickly and drastically. I called him from jail, collect, which he gets reimbursed for, and asked how he was doing. He very nastily and arrogantly said, "what do you want? This is a collect call." Right then I knew I was in trouble. His demeanor was so rotten, his hatred so blatant and his plans for me so obvious. He clearly had no intention whatever to defend me. I was hurt and confused by his 180 degree about-face and meekly tried to convey that to him. He was so mean! Each time I spoke with him, he repeatedly asked me if I'd like him to withdraw from my case. He only took my case to appease the court and make himself look good, never intending to help me, fully intending to hurt me, if I could stand his horrible, dispicable vicious treatment towards me. Of course I couldn't. At our last meeting at the jail, he kept asking me if I wanted him to withdraw about fifty times, so I said, "It's rather evident that you want to withdraw. Go ahead." He spoke not one word, smiled very condescendingly, picked up his laptop and briefcase and walked out on me. Period. My booking video stated clearly that I was arrested for Disorderly Conduct. Somehow I was now sitting in jail for attempted murder of a police officer with a knife! I sat there rotting for ten months, thanks totally to lousy, " only- good- if-you-pay-big-bucks," court appointed a-holes that have the audacity to look in the mirror and call themselves defense "lawyers." To allow such a miscarriage of justice is not only disgraceful and immoral and sinful beyond words, but it is worse than the bogus charge that I was tried and convicted for. Ten months in jail and four years of probation, and I wasn't even Disorderly. My life has been a nightmare since January 28, 2014 and it will never change. My faith in humanity, justice and God is DEAD. If you get him for a lawyer and you're not paying him and police lie their butts off, good luck. He rots, and that is a compliment for him.

My ex lawyer Mark Hooper whom I thought was a great lawyer seriously let me down in court recently! Based on what he advised I've now received the worst judgement that I or anybody I know has ever experienced!!! I would in no way recommend this attorney, for my life is now worse than it's ever been! My world has now been turned upside down for taking his ill advised theory to resolve my matter. As to my judgement in court which should have been dismissed has just gotten 10 times worse. I'm 100% disappointed with the outcome. I should have trusted my own instincts but I decided to trust his. I can't do anything about it now either! All he could say is that he was sorry. But I will now be living in misery for at least the next 18 months of my life!!!

Elena Rosnov is incredibly unprofessional in all communications. She helps her clients lie and falsify court documents, she drags out all court proceedings to hopefully wear down the other party enough to get what she wants. She takes an already bad situation and makes it worse. She does not look out for the best interest of the child in family cases she is only concerned about the money and draining the other party. How she is still allowed to be a lawyer is astounding.

Elena is excellent. Most can have high anxiety when it comes to family Court. You don't need to hound and constantly call. Trust me, she is working for you. She has her own ways. She's amazing in what she does and her performance in court is phenomenal. She actually spoke for me (unlike my last lawyer) and stated everything I wanted and then some (but i didn't know how to say it myself). They don't take you serious without a lawyer. But their attitude changed once Elena was there, entirely, I mean even when they just saw her. There's really no beating her. Other lawyers don't compare. She doesn't take any nonsense and she will speak her mind. She's the best.

I called to ask legal questions in regards to Massachusetts state laws and federal state laws, I spoke to Lawyer Mckaughey and he was extremely rude and had a lack of knowledge of the state laws or federal laws, he told me that he had a headache and was about to go home and that he didn’t have time to hear what I had to say. Then he accused me of defamation because I was stating that there was a possible violation of data protection laws and stated that what I was saying was untrue (even though state and federal laws are public knowledge that everybody has access to ), he belittled me as if I had no idea what I was talking about and then he told me to take it to the judge and hung up on me. Extremely unprofessional, rude, arrogant and immense lack of knowledge when it comes to basic state and federal laws. Would definitely not recommend hiring an attorney that would react in such a child like manner. I have no idea how this office got licensed because they are unethical and unprofessional.

My Husband and I hired Maria for a nasty custody case and divorce. His ex pulled out all the stops and lies to try to gain the upper hand in court. I couldn't have asked for a better, more professional and knowledgeable attorney to represent us. Maria discredited all of the ex's false accusations and handled the craziness with grace. Maria always came in very well prepared and kept us informed as to all the options and outcomes that were possible. She never pressured us to pursue one option or the other but instead provided guidance to help us make our decisions. She also never promised us an outcome, but instead advised us based on the facts of the case and prior experiences in court with our specific judge. Years after the case was closed (with an outcome we were very happy with) Maria still stays in contact and offers us advice and sounding board to bounce issues off of. I have recommended her to several friends who have found her equally amazing.

Ms. Ortiz not only did not do any work on the case she never even showed up to court the day of the scheduled hearing in my divorce. Finally the judge forced Ms. Ortiz to come to court and she showed up poorly dressed and in fact her clothing was dirty. When the Judge asked why she missed the hearing Ms. Ortiz told the judge she forgot about the court hearing which is a completely different story than the one she gave me. In the end Ms. Ortiz made me lose my case. I was not able to hire another lawyer because I had already given all of my money to Ms. Ortiz.

Mark repeatedly noted she needed to visit his office. He is really hard to get a hold of and does not have a receptionist. However, he is very punctual and will always be at appointments and court dates on time. The case never went to trial, but I would have been somewhat worried if it did, due to his blunted emotions and lack of excitement/zeal. He is soft spoken and kind, which made our interactions pleasant, but left me a bit worried about his ability to confidently defend me at trial. All in all, a really nice guy to work with, but if I were charged with a very serious crime, he would not be my first choice.

Robert Christian "defended" me as a court-appointed lawyer in a wrongfully-brought complaint, arising out of road-rage, when I inadvertently parked in a neighbors parking space, cause I had to pee. He was totally ineffective across a wide spectrum of pre-trial and also trial-related issued. On the other hand, he is charming and personally quite affable. He is very reluctant to take on the courts when they are in error---understandably so---since he derives a lot of income from his court-appointed defense work. The damage done by his past ineffective and incompetent legal work is only now being corrected in the appeals-process.

My mistake was trusting Mike Zawadzkas to professionally handle my OUI case. The morning after my arrest I spoke with several attorneys and Mr. Zawadzkas assured me he was the best with a proven track record. After our first 2 appointments he thought it was best to go to trial and we had a "strong case". So, i paid him the additional money for a trial. Then there was radio silence, wouldn't answer my questions or concerns. When i did track him down he was arrogant and uninformed about my case. At the last minute he postponed my trial on 2 occasions. Then comes time for trial...after 5 months of waiting he suggests we plea out on the morning of the trial! There i was having to make a split second decision in the lobby of the courthouse. Mind you this could have been done on day 1 (for far less $$). His only rational was the courts have cracked down on OUI/DUI cases since the Boston Globe ran an article about leniency for DUI arrests on Cape Cod. This article was published 3 years before my arrest, he went on to tell me he would win my case 9 out of 10 times before the article was published. Of course he would not return the trial money (which was not my main concern). Needless to say, he gave me false hope, was misleading and dishonest. He made an unfortunate situation much worse for me and my family. Be warned!

He handled my case a couple of years ago. He referred me to one of his associates and quite frankly on our last meeting before arbitration neither of them appeared to have given the case much attention. I felt like they were "cramming" for a test. At mediation he spent all of the time reading the documents that were prepared by the various professionals for the case and no time explaining my "side of the story." When I spoke up during the process he politely instructed me to keep quiet. If you haven't figured it out yet I lost the case and a pile of dough.

She also charged me well over what I thought she was worth considering I had to do all my own foot work that Lawyers are supposed to do for you. Sorry but how can you recommend someone who took the most straightforward practice of refinancing a home and turn it into a ten month saga between two banks, title insurer, bar association and two lawyers? Jim Scola handled the refinance of my home in 2008. A month after signing the paperwork, my old lender still did not receive the payout. Lots of excuses later Jim finally revealed to me that he screwed up and lost the money from my new lender. His accounts were a total mess and he was way overdrawn. This violates many regulations for handling mortgages as I understand it. Mr Scola left me with TWO mortgages both who wanted to be paid. I hired another lawyer and lost more then $4000 in legal fees and a lot of sleep over this. We filed a complain with the Massachusetts Bar association and I believe that he was given some kind of legal warning but that is it. Mr Scola on many occasions said he would pay me back for the legal costs but he did not come through and is now ignoring my phone calls.

Mr Clifford was recommended to me by the MA Bar Association. I asked about his qualifications during our interview, and he told me he could represent me. I was only able to meet with him twice, which he charged an office office fee. Thereafter, he seemed to be avoiding me; he would not return phone calls and his office staff could find no record of my case. I waited hours for his return to the offie and strongly asserted my concerns for the statutes of limitations. He admitted that he never compiled a file for my case, and thought I should probably seek counsel elsewhere. He waisted my time as well as the timeline for the case and he took my money. I would strongly recommend not hiring this attorney.

Edward O'Reilly is the worst decision I ever made. I was arrested for DUI and hired O Reilly for both the Criminal case and the Registry Admin Hearing for BT refusal. From the first, O'Reilly feigned he did not know about the Valor act of 2012, the probation clerk told me. He never put any effort into counselling me to use this plea bargain. In hindsight I think it was intentional. At the registry hearing for BT Refusal, he actually stated to the hearing officer the police would not lie when my whole case was they did! He showed up two hours late for the hearing at the registry with no papers in a hurry to go to see his brother in a Boston hospital. Again no effort/malpractice! He showed up four hours late for the appeal to the court for refusal. He never developed a timeline of the arrest night, something the Judge at the Court Appeal ask for in open court and O Reilly didn't have it, so I lost my appeal because he didn't do the work to develop it of police and other reports he had. On the criminal case he lost it and I have been on appeal from it since April 2018. An experience appeals attorney has filed an appeal on my behalf based on O'Reilly's malpractice in my criminal case citing numerous instances of negligence and professional failures I would be thrilled to share. Its public record research this reprobate's past cases, you will find it. Bottom Line: Do yourself a favor, select any other lawyer to represent you Ed O'Reilly id just BAD NEWS! If you did decide to drink and drive that's a bad decision. If you choose O'Reilly to represent you, that's another BAD DECISION!

Ed O’Reilly is not just a lawyer; I would call him a BEST ATTORNEY. My coworker recommended him to me as a lawyer who never lost a case. It was actually true. My case was pretty complicated but we won. Thanks Ed! And by the way his prices are very competitive.

I honestly did not feel like Amanda cared too much about my case. She did not keep me in the loop about it, nor did she express any interest on following up with me to see if she could help with anything else, even though I did express an interest in sealing my case. Although her lack of engagement with me as her client translated to a lack of interest in my case, she did get my case dismissed, which was the ultimate goal.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
