Used Dember through the legal benefit from my firm for two real estate transactions. It was a horrible experience from beginning to end. The title company sent him documentation twice, which he did not forward to me until 3 days before the supposed closing. I immediately determined there was an error and spent the 3 days before closing trying to get it fixed. The stress was unbelievable, and should have never happened since this could have been addressed easily if it had been presented to us on a timely basis. The other professionals in the transactions (2 title companies, 2 realtors, 3 banks) all indicated that they were appalled by the way Dember transacted his business. Then when it was the other party who had paperwork issues that held up closing, Dember merely communicated the offer from the seller that we should pay them $100 per day for usage and occupancy. It was our realtor, who was there at the meeting, who insisted that the problem was with the seller and we shouldn't have to pay. Our realtor contacted their realtor and got an agreement where we paid $200 just to keep things moving, or we would have been out $500 or more. A good lawyer would have seen that we paid nothing since it was the other party's problem. I wasn't going to bother writing a review because I would rather just forget about the entire experience but then felt guilty about anyone else who hired him without any idea of what they would experience.

I can only speak for the outcome of our child custody case. In the early stages of our case, prior to hiring him, he told us there was the Tender Years Doctrine that he could use an an argument in our case. Having never heard of that, and going online to Google it, found out that has not been used in many years, because it was deemed to violate the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. When we questioned him on that, he backed away from it. It seemed as though he was attentive, and he spent time with us going over all our notes. But in the end, on the most important day in court, it was like he just wasn't 'there'. He didn't much object to anything from the other side, didn't challenge the important evidence, and overall left us to flounder. We cannot speak for other cases he handles, for which he may be perfectly fit. But in our personal experience with him on an important child custody case, we felt he was a poor choice for our situation.

I have had the pleasure of having John represent me in two small possession Cannabis cases in two different municipalities, which I received conditional discharges; that were cross referenced and found me in violation. John's interpretation of the CD statute compelled the seated judge to exclaim commending me for my choice of attorney's; she went on to explain that Mr. Casale's interpretation of the statute was nothing less than eloquent and dismissed all charges. As we left the courtroom I reached over to pat John on the back as we reached the hall and gave him his new handle: Mr. Eloquence...all the best John, Keep up the great work....

I hired her & her performance could not have been worse. Prior to hiring her she misrepresented her experience in the specific area of expertise pertaining to my case. It increasingly became apparent she was unqualified in that area of law. When the case came to Court she was completely unprepared, was visibly nervous & scared. She did not follow our plan as outlined prior to my hiring her. She deemed it unnecessary and abandoned the ‘expert witness’ and the ‘expert witness report’. She failed to communicate with me in a timely and appropriately often enough manner, would never use the telephone to contact me, or allow me to contact her by phone. The ‘only’ method of communication she used was email. She was ‘out of the office’ more than she was ‘in the office’. I was later to find out by pure coincidence that she had been in the late stages of pregnancy when I signed our contract, which wasn’t disclosed to me at the beginning which would have indicated to me that she would frequently be indisposed/unavailable in detriment to my case. This knowledge would have definitely resulted in my not hiring her.

This review is long overdue. The only reason he got a 1 star is because it wouldn't allow me to choose nothing. Let's begin with the price change. I was quoted one price and then told I owed a balance after it was paid off. A few thousands. I worked hard to get the money up for my brother's case. I had to continually call in for him to schedule a phone visit with my brother. His court date came still no visit or phone call, it was done a few minutes before court. Everything he promised me as far as the case was NOT fulfilled. Never got the charges downgraded, never went over the discrepancies on the discovery. Oh, and it took a few months for him the send the discovery to us, after numerous phone calls. Eileen was wonderful with her communication, but the ball stopped at Fury. So, I started communicating via email for documentation. The judge even yelled at him in court because, things my brother asked for wasn't given to him, we were a 1 -1/2 years in. Things like a full discovery, video etc. Even after that, I had to call into the office 3 weeks later and ask if he was going to send the discovery to my brother. The one my brother received was different form the one I got, and his son got. My Nephew hired a public defender, he had everything in a timely matter and walked out of the jail a free man. We hired a paid attorney and didn't receive half of what he got for free. Three parties were involved, the charges should've been equal charges. He came highly recommended but did nothing for my brother's case from a friend of his. That was the first sign. That was easy money he basically took from me, I burst my behind getting that money together for him, it was all on me. I'm not getting into my brother's case, that's a whole different scenario. I gave yall, the important details. If you need a shark look elsewhere, it's not here. Less is not best. Well, his less went up on us. Check reviews, scheduling a free consult means noting. He will talk a good game. A shark game, but he is not!

I would give this review 0 stars if it was possible because Mark Fury did absolutely nothing for me. I paid him and his office never sent any documents to the court to request a date, so my license was suspended over a speeding ticket. His office never returned my calls, never sent a single email confirmation as they said they would, and when I called his secretary Irene to explain the issues she was rude and unprofessional. At one point she hung up the phone on me because they charged me twice and I said with him showing up 2 hours late for a VIRTUAL court date that the overpayment is due back to me immediately. I would have been better off without his representation. Even a public defender would have been held more accountable. If you are looking for a professional attorney do not hire Mark. He is the farthest from professional. I am still waiting on my overpayment that he claimed would mailed to me almost 2 weeks ago. His entire office is clueless and a total waste of your time and money. You have to check in on him all the time like he’s a child to make sure he is doing his job, for the service you are paying for! He never is and his office didn’t return any of my calls. If you want to pay twice, not be represented, sent zero correspondence, hung up on, given the run around, and pull your hair out he is your guy! If you want to hire a professional look elsewhere. Completely disgusted!

He’s compassionate and accessible. And I believe that at every moment he is working in my best interest. Mr. Barbieri represented me about 12 years ago when I was still a juvenile. The case involved when I allegedly assaulted another student who spit on me and shouted out racial slurs to me. He wanted me to admit to the assault and hope for “sympathy from the prosecutors”; so what ended up happening was that I stayed in the juvenile detention center for two weeks and sentenced to house arrest for 90 days. He isn’t only useless, he makes it worse; he is worse than any public defender.

Mr. Barbieri was in my opinion horrible. He did nothing for my case. I gave him ammo and he didn't even use it. What should have been a slam dunk ended with me having to pay a hefty fine. There were so many holes in the "witnesses" story and Mr. Barbieri just let them continue lying without question. It seemed like he wanted me to do what he wanted me to do and didn't want to listen or defend me or anything I had to say. I would not recommend him to anyone that actually wants to win their case!

He took more money out of my half for property that was sold. I had to call him out on that. He also has money from the estate that have not been distributed so call the administrator wife get it before the only living heir. Unfortunately the administrator passed away. I called him to have him release the bond so I can take over my father estate as stated by the courts. He stated that it will cost money to handle the estate. I am the only living heir. His loyalty lies with prosecutors and staying in their good graces, he pretends to put on a good show for clients though he does not have their interests at heart. Also overcharging and sends exorbitant billing for services afterwards not discussed or rendered. I discourage anyone in need of strong attorney support from hiring this lawyer. He'll gladly chuckle it up with opposing counsel as well to make his clients feel extremely uneasy. Overall opinion: Not honest. Overpriced.

I cannot say enough positive things regarding Mr. Ansell. After facing a serious drug charge and a possible license suspension for a DUI (D) I knew I had to hire a lawyer with an excellent reputation and was in good standing with both local law enforcement and judges. I called and immediately made an appointment for a consultation. He reassured me that he could possibly get the charges either dismissed or a not guilty verdict although legally no guarantee can be made. Any lawyer worth their weight will agree. Throughout the case he kept me up to date and informed in addition to calming my worries. My case, however, did drag on for a substantially long time through no fault of his but the State's. Each time we met for court and discussed the case, he made me feel as though my case truly mattered not only to me, but him as well. He fought for me vigorously. In the end the DUI was dismissed and I was found not guilty of the more serious offense. Mr. Ansell is worth every penny and then some.

I'm quite disappointed that the agreement I signed and the one I carried with me into the courtroom are not the same.Nothing is changing as I wanted, and you imposed a $19,000 council charge WITHOUT GETTING MY CONSENT.Your company has not submitted any previous bills or unpaid charges.I realized after writing the paper that I hadn't read the printout first.I trusted you that whatever editing was done would appear in the divorce decree.Sadly, I discovered today that it was a trick game and that what was shown to me on the laptop was quite different from what I had actually written. If there are any outstanding invoices or other obligations, you cannot enter without being detected. Also,Chris You've demonstrated repeatedly that you shouldn't be trusted. You requested that I lend you $40,000 while I was unable to contact my daughters, and only then did you mail the other attorney to request that Bhupesh unblock my number.Additionally, you yelled at me in court during the second TRO to sign the document and promised to submit a motion, which you failed to do, leaving me in serious debt. How can a lawyer sneak in such a large sum of money without the client's consent? It appears that everyone is fussing over me.When you were sneaking in the divorce paperwork, I did figure out that there was something fishy going on. Iam sad that Melissa was not there to review the paper version . I also think you are working with Mahesh to make me sign the deal. Also, whenever i called your office for issue you secretary Addriana told me that i cannot come to the office..

DO NOT HIRE THIS LAWYER. PLEASE save yourself the trouble. I gave this man crucial evidence during a domestic case, and he didn’t submit one piece of evidence. Not one. When the judge asked him why didn’t he submit any evidence his response was, “It’s just them two going back and forth”. But it wasn’t. That evidence was proof that she was not a victim in fear for her life, but a master manipulator and provoker. I gave him a list of cross examination questions to ask her. Questions that would back up the proof I gave him (that he didn’t submit as evidence) that she was in fact a liar and wasn’t in fear of her life. People who are in fear for their lives do not say and do the things she did. Period. I asked him to find out why she lost custody of her first son, he said he would, but failed to do so. And didn’t give any updates. I literally had to beg this man for information. Just to tell me it wouldn’t be admissible in court. So I did some homework. Called two other attorneys, and was told that he can in fact can submit that as evidence. But he didn’t. I should’ve been fired him, but already paid my retainer. I don’t have it like that to keep paying to play these legal games. He also doesn’t respond in a timely manner. Sometimes he won’t respond AT ALL. The absolute epitome of a horrible lawyer. The list doesn’t stop. And this is ALL FACTUAL. Shall I continue? Ok… Every time there was a court date, he never followed up until the day of. When court was cancelled, he didn’t notify me until I called him the day of that cancelled court date. I was excited to possibly see my daughter again. It literally felt like Christmas waiting for court, only for him to tell me it was adjourned after I was already on the way. Not to mention, he adjourned another one of my court dates because of a heart issue that he had. Granted, I understand things happen and people have lives. But because of that, ultimately it’s been 10 months since I’ve seen my 3 year old daughter. 10 months. What about the pain of my daughter and I? Who cares about us? Not to mention, a final restraining order for harassment is on my background for life because I sent her mother some pretty nasty text messages. Never put my hands on her. No history of violence. Just my reaction to emotional torture. Im a father who cares. But Who cares about the abuse on fathers? Because that’s exactly what this was. Abuse. She took my child to another state before any threat was ever made with no good reason, and that isnt punishable? All I wanted was to see my child. I did everything I was supposed to do. Filed for an emergency hearing and was told that me having no contact with my child for over 5 months wasn’t legitimate enough for an emergency hearing. To be quite honest, I don’t even think he put in the petition for an emergency hearing, like I requested him to. Simply because he hasn’t done anything I’ve asked him to do. Not one thing. That’s how messed up this entire thing went. I don’t have the kind of money to hire another attorney, and I think he knew that. Reason why he took advantage. If the courts actually cared for the well being of the child all of this could’ve been prevented. There’s no excuse why 10 months has gone by without me physically seeing my child. But they add fuel to the flames by allowing the alienation of a parent months and months on end. They want you to react. But if the roles were reversed, none of this would have been tolerated from the start. It’s really friggin sad how the system works. Especially when you pay someone your hard earned money to defend you, and they do the complete opposite. He’s part of the problem. STAY AWAY. HIRE SOMEONE WHO CARES. HE DOES NOT. Update: he adjourned another VIRTUAL court date hearing. 3rd time

Connie had represented me during an ugly divorce, I have nothing but absolutely positive feedback, she’s thorough, professional, understanding, and treats her clients like they’re her first and only concern, Connie stayed on top of everything. I literally cannot say enough positive things about her.

I hired Constance Stickle as my attorney for the re-evaluation of child support case. The initial retainer amount was $ 2500 , however the final bill was over $6000. During the process of the case I did most of the work myself, such as drafting my motion, reviewing documentation, the only thing that attorney Constance Stickle did was file the paperwork with the court and she was also present at the hearing. I have expressed my wishes to Ms. Stickle as to how I wanted the case handled, she prolonged the final outcome as much as she could to have a reason to charge more money. Also Attorney Stickle flat out right refused to file a motion in court for me after my numerous requests to do so and insisted on her own course of action, which prolonged the case even more. I consistently had to contact her for responses, which were always delayed. Hiring her was a clear mistake, her lower retainer fee is used to attract customers which then have to pay much more as a result.

I have been working with Connie for almost 2 years now. I don't think either of us expected a divorce case to drag on this long, but she has never dropped the ball, and remained a consummate professional even when the opposing attorney was not. She is down-to-earth, personable, and as easy as a friend to talk to. After my case was settled, she graciously agreed to stay on to help settle the remaining distribution of assets, knowing I was in over my head. I can wholeheartedly recommend her for any family-related legal matters.

I had gotten blamed for calls and texts I never made, literally brought the person to court to admit she had done it and Cassell ignored everything cause she had a conflict of interest with the plaintiff.Basically dragged my case for a year. Had a public argument in a courtroom over the mess. VERY unprofessional.

I used John for a tenant issue and power of attorney request. He took his time to explain everything to me and I understood exactly what was needed. He also gave me very insightful information that I was not aware of at all that I feel most attorneys would not take out the time to advise. He is a friendly guy and fights for his clients. Thanks for everything John. I will continue to use your services and refer others to your office for legal help.

hired him for tax appeal using my employers legal plan. Refused to take any input during the tax appeal. Kept telling me why, how we are going to lose the appeal or why we don't have the case. Ultimately i decided to go with his comparable for the appeal as he would not accept the once i was suggesting. Did not tell me he was going to make me present the entire case to appeal board. His partner did not said single word other then to introduce me as client. Wont say single thing to counter appeal board argument or direct me what he want me to say, I was caught totally off guard doing all the defending of the comparable chosen by him. I lost simple appeal where assessor had priced my home higher by 40K then what i had paid, with mistakes in assessment by putting incorrect information. We would have just pointed that mistake to the board and we would have better shot at winning then hiring this guy.

I have worked with John Dember on many matters and would gladly use him again. I have hired him for 2 house closings, divorce, DUI (dismissed), and an animal at large matters. John has been helpful, friendly and professional. I don't know the law and don't pretend to know. I like that I can give John the information that he needs and the outcome I desire and he makes it happen. Calling him right now for another matter.

I was involved in an automobile accident had a passenger and the other driver was not insured, my case was very simple because I carried uninsured motorist coverage. When I was fully released from medical treatment he submitted my medicals to my "own" insurance company, later he settled the case for the maximum coverage 25/50 we met in his office on Springdale in Huntington Beach, CA and he assured me all medical bills were going to get paid. First he tried to give me out of $25, 000 he collected on my case miserable $4,000. I told him that there were only three medical providers and how is it he was getting $8,333 for attorney fees from the top. He told me the medical providers were only reducing their bills by if anything $500. His excuse was he was going to make sure they did not come back after me to collect. I went ahead and contacted each provided without him knowing and explained to each that if they worked with me in reducing their bills so that I can get what I was entitled to, I would make sure to get the checks from Mr. Ellman and delivered their payments myself,. I started to call his office and after placing so many calls and leaving several messages with his assistants "Marlene, Julie, Michelle" finally I was able to get an appointment with Steven Ellman I gave him the letters from each provided accepting to reduce their bill, he was upset because not only he was going to have to pay then on the spot but because according to him I had ruined his relationship with the providers. (this providers accepted to work with me because I they claimed they had dozens of clients from him and had not gotten payment) While in his office he gave us attitude and would not even spend 2 minutes with us, he had Marlene Sealock, assistant to Senior attorney see us and gave us all the checks. By the way Ms. Sealock told us that she was about to quit his office because he was rude and that many clients and medical providers were beginning to complaint and he was always hiding to avoid paying that it was a very stressful job working with someone like him. I did not care all I wanted was to leave this office and never see any of his staff ever again.

Retained Mr. Ellman for my case which was rather complex, due to severe and life threatening injuries, that paralyze my left arm and fractured my pelvis, rendering me and my family completely destitute. After 5 long years of protracted litigation against to high profile defendants with high profile lawyers, Mr Ellman was able to secure what my family and I thought was a fair settlement. The defendants were underinsured but were loaded, but too greedy to pay what they owed until Mr. Ellman litigated the hell out of the case and brought them to their knees. Mr. Ellman was there for me and my family when we needed him the most and didn't let the other lawyers step all over me. Althought hey tried with all their might.

After much research, I found Mr. West online and left a voice message. He called me back that same evening and spent 30 minutes on the phone with me explaining my situation, and answering questions, all before he was even hired. It was an incredible pleasure to have Mr. West represent me. He is extremely knowledgeable and professional; a complete expert in his field. He is responsive (as busy as he is), accommodating and has a genuine empathy for helping others. I cannot recommend this professional enough! It was a great experience, and without him, my matter would not have been resolved in my favor! He's the best!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
