Brought me in office under the guise I needed his services when all I needed was a CPA, his free phone referral could have given what I needed, instead he brought me in and as charged me 300.00 for something he could have easily told me on the phone. He stated to bring 3,000 - 5,000 dollar retainer based on the complexity of the case.. There was nothing complex about it. He was a 30 minutes late, but sent his Dad who was equivalent to a used car salesman and went on and on. Even when I found out they were not able to help me, they still engaged me in questions, taking advantage of my naivety of the situation. They gave me the impression, and wasted my time with meaningless questions only to refer me to a CPA (their friend) who wanted to charge me thousands for things totally unnecessary. If you have rather grey area, do not contact them, they will string you along, contact a CPA first. I had no legal issues, and they should have had the kindness to tell me this in our "free consultation" shame on both of them.

I am not pleased at all. Tom has dodged me for the past two weeks leaving me lost soon before a courtdate... again. He is seemingly never in his office so I hope he is handling others with more respect and care than I. This is unfortunately not the first time he has avoided a call back from multiple messages left. Time sensitive questions are left unanswered as he is quick to brush off his mistakes one after another with no remorse. He tends to 'forget' to do what has been asked of him and there is no way of reminding him.

We hired him back in December 2016 when my last lawyer refused to get us access to the evidence or to take the case to trial after wasting 3 years. Ballarotto promised to take the case to trial and took an $80,000 dollar deposit for trial. After taking the money he refused to take the case to trial and continuously cursed at me, my mother, and my father. After a few months of this, he told us that the prosecutor would drop the charges to a single 3rd degree charge which could be expunged and that I would be put into an "Intensive Supervision Program" in which I would be released from jail in 2 months. He said that he would return the $80,000 he took for trial and that the prosecutor would return property taken from my house. We had ran out of money after our expert had taken over $30,000 and still not examined the evidence. In order for me to go back to work and for the $80,000 Ballarotto had taken, we relented to taking the plea deal so as to not lose our home which had been heavily mortgaged to pay for my defense. After the plea hearing, he went on a one month vacation to Florida and refused to meet with us before sentencing. At sentencing, the judge completely disregarded the plea deal and I was then convicted of a 2nd and 4th degree crime and sentenced to 4 years in prison, even though I had not pled guilty nor had a trial to those charges. In addition, the Judge then imposed $3000 dollars in fines which we could not afford. I was not permitted to speak at sentencing, nor were my parents who were present. Ballarotto refused to show dozens of letters from the community in my support, kept hidden my charity work, and then made up a story that I was seeing counseling. He lied to misrepresent my college and post highschool education. He helped the prosecutor to paint a false image of me. The court would not allow me to speak or take back the plea, despite the fact the judge had rejected the terms of the plea deal. When I was in prison, I tried to appeal my case, but he would not visit me for over 2 months while the prison system kept moving me from prison to prison. They did not even provide me with a change of clothing for the first 2 months I was kept captive. I had no access to legal materials, phone calls, nor email during this time. I had sporadic access to mail. When my parents were finally able to contact me over 2 months later, they revealed that Ballarotto refused to return the money he stole, and that they had been continually told that I would be released after 2 months in prison. Through correspondence, I had told them that the ISP program hadn't contacted me at all contrary to their regular practice with other prisoners, yet Ballarotto told them that he was actively working with ISP to make sure I would get it. When I first spoke to my parents after over 2 months in prison, I told them about the rejection letter from ISP. At that point I was able to yell at them for what the court had done to me. My parents still hadn't realized that I was sentenced to 4 years in prison, nor aware of the fines that were imposed. Ballartto had been lying to them during this time and misleading them. When my parents confronted him with the rejection letter, he then lied and said "well, he'll be out in 9 months with parole." My parents, then aware of his lies then confronted him with the fact that I had actually been sentenced to 4 years and the earliest possible parole was a year. He still had not returned the money he had taken for trial. I am currently suing him for the money he stole as well as damages. After a several months in prison, I learned about a pre-sentence report which we were never given. It was different than the plea I had agreed to, though it was lesser than the sentence I received. I also received the plea papers which showed the original plea being crossed out and alternate charges and sentences being blatantly written in with a different pen than which was used to originally fill it out and sign.

I have been represented by Mr. Ballarotto and was most satisfied with the outcome of my case. Previous to meeting with Mr. Ballarotto , I had met with several other attorneys who did not give me much confidence in their ability to vindicate me of the charges against me. After reading the police report and other charges , Mr.Ballarotto said , " I see this as a simple case of self defense and not to worry " He got all the charges against me dropped ! I have since sent four friends of mine separately to Mr. Ballarotto . All were cleared of the charges and most pleased with the results he acheived for them. I highly recommend him without any reservation.

The whole time I was a client he never gave me any attention he always gave me to his assistant. First when he wanted my money he had someone come to my door then I couldn't say I knew that person when the insurance company took my statement I had to lie and say I heard of mr maroney from my friend. My case settled a while ago but I should have looked at the fees a little more when my case closed, I was charged 35 for child support search when it's only 10. 300 for a court filing fee when its only 250. And 1000 for investigative services, I gave him all he needed what did he have to investigate? I can only assume that was payment for the man he sent to my door.. I will never use this firm again! Phil was the reason I spent ANY time in jail after being accused of something that literally could not have happened. Instead of properly defending me, he created a hypothetical alternative situation that he unilaterally decided to present to the court … His entire law firm is friends with the Somerset County Prosecutors office and are full blown cucks to the radical political whims of this office! Philip Nettle was referred to me by one of New Jersey's top-rated LexisNexis lawyers who is semi-retiring and had to reduce his caseload. Nettl is extremely knowledgeable and catches on quickly to the subtleties of complex case material. I have the utmost trust and respect for him. I recently had the unfortunate experience of hiring Greg for my divorce case, and I cannot express how disappointed and frustrated I am with the services provided. From start to finish, the entire process was a nightmare, and I strongly advise anyone considering this attorney to look elsewhere. First and foremost, communication was abysmal. It seemed like getting a response from Greg was an impossible task. My emails and calls went unanswered for days, if not weeks, leaving me in the dark about crucial developments in my case. It felt as though I was an afterthought, and my concerns were constantly brushed aside. Furthermore, the lack of preparation and attention to detail was astounding. During court hearings, it became apparent that Greg was ill-prepared, stumbling through arguments and often appearing clueless about the specifics of my case. This not only reflected poorly on their professionalism but also left me feeling unprotected and vulnerable in a situation that already carried immense emotional weight. The billing practices were another major issue. Greg was quick to nickel-and-dime me for every minute of their time, even for tasks that should have been included in the overall service. The final bill was exorbitant, and I felt taken advantage of during an already financially challenging period. To add insult to injury, the final outcome of my divorce settlement was far from satisfactory. Greg failed to negotiate effectively on my behalf, resulting in an agreement that left me in a significantly worse position than I could have been with competent legal representation. In conclusion, my experience with Greg was nothing short of a disaster. If you value communication, competence, and a fair representation, I strongly urge you to seek alternative legal counsel. Save yourself the stress, frustration, and financial strain that comes with entrusting your divorce case to someone as inept and unprofessional Greg.

I was recommended to Rob by my real estate agent (seller). She said she used him for years and for a simple real estate closing this should have been simply and quick. He presented a flat fee, quickly got me to sign the agreement and claimed he would take care of the next steps. The first time I realized there was a problem was during the inspection process. The buyers expressed some concerns and Rob never sent me the full list of items that needed to be addressed - he picked and choose what he wanted. It was not till my agent called us because the buyers agent expressed concern the buyers were about to walk away because we refused to negotiate on issues that needed to be addressed. This was the first time we were hearing of this. Later in the transaction we find out that Rob had been stalling the buyer's lawyer to finish the wording on the sales contract for the home. Again and again we would find out that Rob was just not following through. We ended up providing information through our agent to the buyers agent and finally their lawyer to get this transaction complete. Rob did the absolute minimum work possible. If the buyers were not understand and we did not have to sell our home as quickly as we did, we would have started over with a new attorney. This was the most stressful experience of my life and all because someone could not do his job! Nothing made my husband and I happier then signing the closing paperwork!

Alain helped me at a time when everything was crashing down. I had two driving while suspended charges, I was facing jail time and high fines. He is ex public prosecutor in North Bergen where I was due in court so I figured he would be the best lawyer that knows the system and how to get my penalties reduced. He was very responsive, let me know what to do and when to do it and kept me informed at all times. I ended up paying less than half of the penalties, faced no jail time and saved my license from being suspended. I am truly grateful for this man has done. Thanks!!

Bill Waldman was the attorney that handled a closing for Lakeland bank whom held an SBA loan I had. After closing the deal in December 2020 and wanting to pay off the balance in the first 6 months I sent 3 requests starting in June of 2021 requesting a pay off balance after I had paid down a large amount of the loan. It was not until OCTOBER that he finally got back to me and Fedex me out a demand letter saying I owed almost twice the amount money and I needed to satisfy the loan in 10 days. In addition, he continued to add interest on the loan which I had planned to pay off in full back in June. After a bit of back and forth I had to do his job and correct him on his $70K error because he was asking ME to show him where he had dropped the ball. Makes you a little nervous that these banks have lawyers that represent them and they make such huge errors. I guess this is what you get from K&L Gates LLP.

David was always available to answer my calls and if he wasn't I always got a return phone call within the same day. Although I didn't get everything I asked for I am smart enough to realize that a lawyer is not a magician especially in family court. David was up front about the fact that we may not be successful and fought hard for me. His associate Ioanna prepared the motions and was always available to answer questions and was really wonderful and pleasant to deal with.

When I was looking for a lawyer for a very tough divorce settlement, a friend recommended Ms. Seema Singh to me and said that go to her because she knows her job very well. I went to her and explained my situation and also mentioned that my husband had a very good lawyer. From the beginning, I saw that nothing fazed her. She was very compassionate towards me because I was the suffering party and went all out to get me a settlement that I needed. She researched to quote previous cases where my kind of situations had won cases and went on hard to make sure I got my dues. THAT IS THE KIND OF ATTORNEY YOU WANT ON YOUR SIDE WHO STANDS STRONG IN FIGHTING YOUR CASE. She got me more than I thought I would not just financially but otherwise too and constantly communicated with me the entire time. I feel that when we are fighting a case, we are nervous, unsure and we NEED our lawyer to have the experience, the vision and the mindset to help. Ms. Seema has all of it. I recommended Ms. Seema to another woman who was in an abusive relationship and needed an attorney....I met her recently and she said she was very "relieved" that Seema was handling her case because she does an EXTREMELY good job of representing her clients! I would recommend her 100%.

If you like to be penny pinched and ruin your relationships with others.. you are welcome to use her services. When asked to transfer the escrow amount back to my bank account after a home sale - please see her response below.. remember this is my money she was holding in escrow and she wants to charge me to give me back my own money - who in this day and age will talk like this? Isn't there anything called customer service and keeping clients happy? The home buyer (her client) called and apologized for the Lawyer's (Seema Singh) rude attitude. "You will have to pay for the wire transfer costs plus my time to go to the bank to send the wire. Let me know if you are willing to do so then I will deduct that amount from monies owed to you. I will also be required to go to the bank to sign the wire since they require me to go and sign it in person."

I wouldn't recommend James Ofner to anyone. He was my divorce attorney just recently and ended up doing more harm then good. He made me plead guilty in court to things I didn't do and it cost me more money and probation. His office spent numerous times on the phone with my Ex wife and they had the balls charge me for giving her advice against me. There is much more, but I wouldn't recommend his office to my worst enemy. His secretary is also a tool and quite unhelpful. The final straw with them was not honoring prices previously agreed upon.

Mr Harrington was so good to me. He handled a divorce case for me and he knew this was a difficult time for me and my children and was very compassionate and protective. Oatrick also has the patience of a saint ! I would call him worrying about the silliest things and he was ALWAYS responsive and helpful. He gave me WONDERFUL advice and his quick thinking with helping me with an amendment to my custody agreement when I moved later saved me from a world of trouble and pain. I fully endorse this lawyer and if he has received any bad reviews they must be from people that are just bitter and unfair. Sometimes no matter how hard a lawyer tries, he can't make someone happy. In my case he did. He even was concerned about my emotional well being. When we were in court for the final divorce decree I saw my ex husband and I was upset. He sat right next to me and said, "are you okay?" Never leaving my side that day. It is 5 years since my divorce and I still think of his kindness and how grateful I am for his help.

However, he proved to be extremely difficult to communicate and even get in touch with throughout the process, and he showed a lack of respect for me and my family throughout the process. He showed up late to multiple court hearings and seemed to be doing last-minute research on the case in the minutes before we faced the judge. I felt very disappointed with my experience with Sebastian Bio, and would recommend that you look elsewhere for legal counsel.

Worst attorney ever you will never get any information from him. He will demand money but he will never deliver. He will miss court dates. He will never inform you that he missed the court date. You will get one-sided judgment as I got . he will tell you that it was the judge decide to do it on his own since most of the people are not lawyers or have much knowledge of law. He will keep you under wraps. if you ask anybody at his office, what’s going on nobody knows anything there is a new secretary every week. That means nobody knows what’s going on. You will never get a hold of this guy. He will never tell you what’s going on in your case. He failed to represent my father. We paid the retainer fee for him to specifically represent my father on a violation of probation case in which all probation time was served. The only thing that he did wrong was leave the country but he was unaware that he was still on probation and had to notify the probation officer. My father has memory deficit, all probation conditions were met, and the three years of probation was served. Mr. Campagna pushed back the date for my father to see Judge Moniyhan for 20 days after being held so he can gather "facts" and then saw my father 2 weeks after we hired him and the day before seeing the judge he failed to prepare my father for what to expect the judge to say and how to respond. The day that my father went before Judge Moniyhan Mr. Campagna did not represent him at all. My father spoke for himself and was very nervous and did not know what to say and did not respond well to the Judge's response. When Judge Moniyhan asked Attny Campagna if he wanted to say anything, he stated, "No and thank you" after Judge Moniyhan gave a court date of May 16th another 20 days for my father to await sentencing. When we asked Attorney Campagna why he chose not to say anything or to present termination of probation or reinstate probation or why he didn't explain to the judge that my father was nervous, he state that my father already messed himself up by saying too much. We paid him for nothing and wasted our money. He seems to not be a compassionate attorney that would fight for his clients. We wasted money on him when he could have received a public defender and saw the judge much sooner and perhaps be home with his family right now.

He could not even defend himself .What do you think he will do for you. Hire him and kiss your chances and money good bye. What a loser

He is not professional and his behavior is unethical. One minute he makes a settlement agreement and the next minute he denies agreeing to anything he proposed. He was never responsive about the issues that needed to get fixed in the house before closing. He lied repeatedly about when he would provide us the documentation to show what issues were fixed with the house. He finds it appropriate to disrespect and belittle every person he comes across.

I see women visiting after hours - the same women I hear crying to him for legal help , I can hear moaning later in the evening. I can hear the shower in his Newark avenue office run and 20 minutes later, like clock work, this attorney and his women-prey scoot out then he locks up. This man is married above that he should be disbarred! His wife is either STUPID or FILTHY HERSELF, his victims are needy he uses it to his advantage. These women should come forward and tell the Barr what he has done to them.

You know the saying "Don't talk the talk, if you can't walk the walk"? This guy needs to learn it. He is a cocky arrogant old man. He seems to be caring at moments just to hook you in, but then talks down severely to anyone who is a layman. I have heard other bad things about him from his secretary Pam, but I am not going to get into details for the privacy of his other client's/family. Let's just say what I've heard about his moral standings has made my jaw drop to the ground.

There has already been a ruling in the US regarding free speech as it relates to profanity. “I eat a**” sticker sensation Dillon Webb already proved this in a U.S. court room in Florida. Your bs censorship will be beaten in higher U.S. courtrooms u piece of garbage. You swore an oath and you’re wiping your butt with it.

This attorney meets with potential clients and tell them everything a client wants to hear from their potential attorney. Once the client retain this attorney he goes rogue on them. He receives your call but have little time to listen to what ever you wish to discuss with him. Every comment from him is we just have to wait and see what happens in court. He never like to take the initiative and contact the opposing council for required information he will show up to a hearing knowing he never received the documents promised during the last court date and allow the judge to request the same information from the opposing council again with out a comment. If you as the client inquire why the case is not progressing as you thought it would he will turn on you and make you the enemy. From this point forward you get nothing but arrogance and hostile responses from the person (attorney) who represent you and should be on your side. When you call to have a meaningful conversation about the case he rushes you off the phone and anything you thought you were going to cover with him gets swepted under the rug. Then when you show up for court he want to ask you questions you should have covered prior to the court hearing . So in a nut shell it appears as though he enjoys reporting to court rather its productive or not because he gets paid no matter what amount the case is settled for. In closing, it would have been appreciated if he was Proactive rather than non-compliant and argumentative to me the client; but rather informative and resourceful to the opposing side.

Mr. Robert Mintz, a lawyer from Newark, NJ was retained for services. Due to my delicate emotional state at the time he made statements as "he knows people and would make it go away" to get my business and have me sign the retainer. During the process of next few years, he did not appear to know the facts straight, would rely on his junior counsel to update him on the case. He would try to schedule frequent office appointments with no specifics to discuss (only for the sole purpose to bill client) and only for general small talk. After charging $130,000 and when I could not afford to pay him anymore he abandoned and dropped me from the case. He took advantage of my emotional distress and when I had difficulty paying him more, he would repeat phrases like, "you need to keep in mind, I will be keeping you out of jail". He did not care about me or the facts of my case, he simply wanted all my money. In my opinion all his billing was inappropriate (e.g billed for having lunch with his junior lawyer.... apparently he discussed my case....... really!!). I would never recommend him as a lawyer.

He was hired by my friends family for a potential criminal case. He mislead them and over a year charged them over $140K dollars and didn't do anything productive. Many times he had no clue what was going on in the case and had to ask his junior assistant for answers, and appeared under influence of something. Before the real case even started, and when took away all the money and my friend couldnot pay him anymore, he dropped out of the case and left my friend hanging.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
