My son was facing serious charges and a La Grande native let me know Wes Williams was regarded as the best lawyer in town. Wes immediately restored our confidence and my son's rights. He had already been characterized as guilty by the police and DA. Wes and his team worked on our case for nearly a year and we're very happy with the outcome. The DA's original charges that would have sent a child to prison for a minimum of 50 years were dismissed and my son pleaded guilty to what amounts to a minor non-traffic offense. I shared my experience with a co-worker Wes Williams had also represented and he remarked "he's worth every penny," and I agree completely. I highly recommend Wes Williams and his team, they can be trusted.

The case details are not important, but TRUST me, I was innocent and wrongly accused. Janet Hoffman's defense team was brilliant, aggressive, enthusiastic and efficient. If they had NOT been fighting as hard, I would not have gotten a 'Case Dismissed' ruling from the bench. Was the D.A. pissed and embarrassed? You bet! But wait, there's more... Janet's people pushed to get my arrest expunged, too... As part of the original fee and service! Throughout, they always took my calls and promptly returned e-mail, keeping me in the loop and working as if I was their only client. It was like Ben Matlock, Perry Mason, and the Blue Fairy all rolled into one! Thanks, Janet!

Kyle represented me on some criminal charges. He has a persistent and calming demeanor that played excellently with jury and with me as well. Kyle listened well, always explained the sometimes arcane law processes and also often took suggestions or recommendations from me. He was also consistently calm and reassuring during the stressful moments in the courtroom and before the trial. He handled the jury selection admirably and won acquittals on three of the four charges that I was facing--including the most serious of the four. The outcome was a complete victory and a definite success. Kyle was a true professional and I would recommend his services and abilities without reservations to anyone.

If you are facing not one but multiple criminal charges (counts) involving the operation of a motor vehicle which carry the potential consequences of jail time and a big license suspension if convicted, there is good news. You can call Ben. Prior to facing this type of vexing ordeal, I had never been arrested in my lifetime. My case went all the way past a favorably conducted evidentiary hearing and legal conferences, just shy of having a 6-person jury trial scheduled with the Court over several months (longer than a year)—where Ben tirelessly, diligently, masterfully worked as the lead Attorney on defeating the entire case. All charges are being dismissed! Let's go from the beginning of this adversarial legal process, where the Office of Administrative Hearings for the DMW was moving to immediately suspend my drivers license within the first ten days of the custodial arrest. After reading a legal notice prepared by Ben and the owner of the law firm which was promptly delivered to the Prosecutor/Police in advance of the DMV suspension hearing, Police elected not to file a police report within the 10-day period required to seek a suspension of my license with the DMV. This procedural issue resulted in an immediate dismissal of the DMV Implied Consent Hearing case. This is the first victory achieved in a very short amount of time after retaining Ben as my lead Attorney on the overall matter. When you retain Ben as your legal advisor, you also receive the support of the entire team of lawyers at the law firm, including the owner of the law firm himself, Mark who has been in the business for 4 decades. Why were the overall results of the case so highly favorable like this? The Officer who charged me with the most serious count never actually conducted Field Sobriety Tests to determine if there was PROBABLE CAUSE to reasonably charge me with DUII. Ben highlighted this major mistake made by the Officer and crafted a plan on how exploit this major flaw to champion a cause for my vindication (legally, constitutionally, and according to statutory sources of case law), so that every advantage to my defense was methodically crafted. What happened next was at the evidentiary hearing, where Ben cross examined the Officer, up to the point just shy of impeaching the Officer as a witness having all of his credibility drained for his placement of false misleading evidence into a Sworn Affidavit for an unconstitutional Search Warrant. Ben effectively demonstrated why the Officer did this: BECAUSE HE DID NOT HAVE PROBABLE CAUSE for the highest count and charge of DUII from his own investigation. So, the Officer falsified and fabricated PROBABLE CAUSE by subsequently writing it into a misleading Sworn Affidavit. How did Ben point this out to the Court? The video evidence from the Police Body Cameras (presented in Court) did NOT match the false misleading fabricated written reported evidence the Officer placed into the misleading Sworn Affidavit. So yes, not just in Third-World countries can you get FRAMED, It happens like this right here in America practically every night and day. Did the Officer get fired? Of course not, Oregon has a super liberal jurisdiction here. The Judge, Prosecutor, and Administration for the Police Force all work under the same umbrella and they look out for each other, even when incompetent, dishonest Police Officers do things like Lying in a Sworn Affidavit to fabricate evidence. This is the definition for liberal. Liberal for them, not for the accused. The Court still wanted to Prosecute the case on all counts, even after the evidentiary hearing! The element of complexity was spiraling. Ben turned this foul ball into a home run! I'm grateful to have been represented by such a world class law firm. The owner Mark Cogan is one super cool cat, poised. Ben will crush with a velvet hammer making no sound to those doing things such as lying in a Sworn Affidavit.

I was on a Jury for a complex case in which Mr. Callahan was the Defense Counsel. It would have been easy for him to just go through the motions of defending this client as the prosecution had an incredibly strong case. Mr. Callahan presented his client's story through witnesses with a carefully crafted approach and a human touch. He won, against the odds. I was so proud of him...and of the jury's difficult decision. I would highly recommend him...and if ever needed, would hire him without hesitation.

Yadira Ramirez is an excellent attorney. I was blindsided by false sexual assault allegations. Yadira was always calm, cool and collected. I felt she had my best intentions. She had a lot of patience when I got angry or upset because I didn't understand how the courts work, or how lawyers communicate with the courts, and also the laws. I felt more at ease once when she thoroughly explained how court proceedings take place. Although, I could not ever be fully at ease because of the implications in my case. We had evidence that showed my innocence. But even with that, I still felt anxiety because of how inconsistent the courts in America are. Yadira could have told me that I had a airtight case and that we were going to win in court. But she was honest and said that courts are unpredictable and that she can't guarantee a victory. Which I understand. But she also said that we do have good evidence and that would show favorably for me in court. Court was set for a Friday, and on Monday my accuser decided she wanted a consent agreement. I did not know what that was, and Yadira thoroughly explained what it was. The first draft of the consent agreement their attorney sent Yadira was bogus and unfair. Yadira told me to stand firm and not accept the terms. Yadira redlined the document an added language in my favor. Their side sent back another agreement, and Yadira once again said to stand my ground and not accept it... So finally 2 days before we're supposed to go to court. My accuser and her attorney caved and gave in to our terms and a much more favorable consent agreement, which ended up in a dismissal of my accuser's restraining order against me... I was extremely anxious and nervous the entire time, 3 months of absolute hell. Yadira gave me my life back and restored a little faith in the legal system. There are lawyers out there that 100% care about their clients and Yadira is absolutely one that cares. I recommend Yadira for any legal matters regarding restraining orders. Thank you Yadira

Thomas Ybarra is a highly organized and knowledgeable attorney and I'm so grateful for his attention to detail when it came to my divorce proceedings. He was always honest with me about what to expect and also heard me when I told him what I wanted/needed. He was able to successfully argue my position for sole custody of my two children, secure me spousal support and child support, and negotiate an agreement that allowed me to keep my house. His attention to my case was constant and I could always get ahold of him when I needed advice. I highly recommend Mr. Ybarra's counsel if you are looking for representation in a divorce or child custody case. He knows the law and is able to explain how the process works. He made my very volatile divorce bearable and having him in my corner was a complete godsend. No one truly wins in divorce, but in my case he got me a big win on paper. Grateful for his representation.

She was instantly in my corner, loyal and empathic. She swiftly provided me legal reasons not to worry, then also made some phone calls to verify things on my behalf. Although now I may not be charged with the crime, Laura assured me that if I am, just give her a call and she will be right there for me. Do not use this law firm. I was promised by Mrs Bianca Pacheco-Mayberry that her and this law firm would accomplish 90% of what I am asking them to accomplish with my $4000 retainer fee. After paying the retainer fee she stopped all correspondence with me. I found out she left to another law firm by being appointed to Mr Brian Morgan. He starts off by designing 4 parenting plans that do not work for me due to my work schedule, I called him out on it, he said that is not how it works & you will not receive any such credit. Then I find out he is contacting my ex asking her advise on what she would agree to. I asked him who is he working for? He literally squandered almost $6000 from me, a broke single divorced father of 4 children. He then demands an additional $5000 to continue my case with no guarantee I would actually end up with more time with my children. Which I believe was his easy way out of my case so he could leave this firm as well to go to his new job at another firm. I was told by Mandi Philpott in the fee agreement I signed states "Attorney does not assure a particular result or outcome of any disputed matter" Attorney fees are earned regardless of outcome of this matter. Which I believe gives them the right to squander any and all money from any client, which is exactly what they did to me. I believe that if lawyers were paid on performance, they would all be broke! Specially this law firm! I went with this law firm because of their "Success Stories." After my experience I can not believe any of them are truthful!

The attorney was great throughout the case. When it came crunch time for the final judgement, they never sent in my response. I sent them my marked up document over a month before it was due to the court. The court says nothing was submitted and therefore the other party was awarded everything they asked for. Tried to work with Corey Law to fix this, they refused and said good luck.

I met with Roger after the death of my mother in-law who had no estate planning in place. Not only did Roger walk us through the process completely and provided a path forward for our family, he did so in a compassionate and empathetic way that helped with our grieving process. I would highly recommend anyone who is in our position and for those who want to avoid this all together by getting your affairs in order ahead of time.

This lady shouldn't be a lawyer. She couldn't have worked harder to get me slammed up State in prison for 45 months. Witch was the wrong sentence for the speeding ticket I had. I was totally appalled and the representation that I received. I should have gotten 30 days and gone on with my supervision. She worked her hardest to get me as far away from the probation office, because they know me and get me to the State court house where there wouldn't have been a chance of doing the probation recommendations because those judges only take the DA's recommendations. It was out of control..... she is completely unable to do her job to the best of the clients ability. I can't believe she was going to put me up for almost 4 years for doing 37 in a 30 mph zone.... she needs to go back to McDonald's or taco bell where ever she got her law degree. This clearly is not the field for her....

These guys are great if you’ve been in a car accident. They helped me when I was rear-ended and needed medical treatment for my neck. The team at Hughes Mathews Legal Group Midland handled everything with the insurance company and made sure I was compensated. They were very professional and always returned my calls. I’m grateful for their help.

The last time I had any interaction with any police was 45 years ago, things have changed in that time and I was unfamiliar with the process, Justin was patient and informative. After we got the ball rolling, everything went smoothly, and as time went on I was more confident in him and he assured me that everything was going to work out. And it did. All charges were dropped. Thanks to Justin Rosas and his team.

Michael is a very straight forward great attorney Easy to work with and a good listener. Easy to work with his front office and him. Best experience I’ve had working with a law firm. Call him, text them or email. He has the bonus of working with the system/court/judges/and staff which is extremely important working with his team. Knowing the way and having the experience to be effective is a great service and asset. He was very knowledgeable with my case and spelled out possibilities and the final outcome. I like him! He worked with me financially which was a blessing! Thank you Team Hughes. Darin Niemeyer

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
