If you are using ground for exactly what it was zoned for on the state, county, and local level and need to contact the attorney that handled the settlement on said property due to an issue with the local level and you are told that "You should be more neighborly." and "Maybe you should move." and then he bills you, while not dealing with, correcting, or representing you on the local level issue, this would be Mike Scherer. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time we have had such issues with Mike, thankfully we have been able to find attorneys that actually understand the issues and are interested in helping and we have been found not at fault in all of these situations.

Attorney Scherer was recommended by another local law office that did not have the time to take on my divorce case. Though my case was in most ways simple and straightforward, it was complicated but the irrational and unpredictable behavior of my now ex-spouse, plus the frequently aggressive yet marginally competent actions of her counsel. Throughout the proceedings, Attorney Scherer gave me excellent legal advice and communicated effectively as to what was happening and what I should expect. He defeated several motions contrary to my interests that were filed by the opposing attorney. I have been involved in numerous legal proceedings, but nothing can compare to the emotional stakes in a divorce. Attorney Scherer was highly sympathetic to my personal situation and the difficulties I was going through. Attorney Scherer has a very professional demeanor yet also treated me as a friend. He offered encouragement and support and helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. To my delight, the light at the end of the tunnel was NOT an oncoming train, but newfound freedom. In determining the final settlement, Attorney Scherer was clearly the superior negotiator, and his familiarity with the Divorce Master's Office in Carlisle also worked to my advantage. In the end, Attorney Scherer reduced my alimony obligation by several years and tens of thousands of dollars. I guesstimate that the amount of money he saved me was around ten times what his services cost me. I will always be indebted to Attorney Scherer.

my experience with this lawyer made me feel worse then I have in years. whenever I called their office I was told they were all to busy. when I managed to get them on the phone they treated me like dirt and acted like I had no right to call them at all. I even got an email asking me to call and when I did, they wanted to know why I was called I didn't know what I wanted. they also made promises to look into things for me and get back to me,, and never returned any phone call. so anyone who is looking for a lawyer that cares about their clients and treats them with respect, this is not the lawyer for you. in the end I fired this lawyer and now have a good lawyer. I am still considering filling a report with the local bar association for the way they treated me

I was originally planning to plead guilty to my second DUI with a public defender and this lawyers partner promised he could probably get me off. So I hired him then the day before my hearing he said he couldn't make it to my hearing. So he gave me this guy his partner to represent me. I was ultimately told I had no defense in the end. Then he screwed up my paperwork at my sentencing hearing and I almost sat in jail for 6 months because he didn't label that the judge said I could be paroled after 30 days. Also at the sentencing he didn't check off that the judge approved work release eligible as he promised and I had to wait another week for the judge to sign off that I could get on work release. I don't recommend this lawyer or his partner. They were not prompt at returning my phone calls either. I feel after talking about my case with a lot of other people that if I would have had a better lawyer, I would not have gotten charged with this at all based on the circumstances around how I was arrested.

Lee Ruslander is an EXTREMELY GREAT lawyer. The way he presents himself in the courtroom is great and his cross examination skills are top notch. He intimidates law enforcement officers on the stand testifying and the District Attorney will completely hesitate to put a witness on the stand with Lee Ruslander in the courtroom. Lee gets the entire courtroom quiet and confused and the District Attorney won't even know what he's even doing. Great lawyer. He's your man if you need a good lawyer. If your in some deep trouble call Lee.

All the guy seems compentent enough to do is apply for postponments... i thought my case set a new for the guy with five but another guy I know his DUI had six... Naturally after every postponement he came around with his hand out wanting more money. After using this highly trained professional for six months I found out he was on a year probation for being a drunk... I think should do a check on him, i noticed the man was more than a little groggy in the morning. Once he forgot my name through out the entire meeting

Ok, first of all I do not recommend this lawyer at all. She is impossible to get a hold of and does not keep track go her cases. After being with her for years and her telling me that my case should come out in a month or two ...10 years later (still resolving the case) I come to find out she wrote a number wrong and never checked up on it for the last 5 years. By myself, I went to the immigration office for less than a year and found out there was many documents she never turned in that I had given to her. Enough of my case, point blank I do not recommend her.

Recently I was criminally violated by my boyfriend's ex. Though he is now my ex I took her to court for coming after me with a golf club, consistently threatening me, and stalking me. I went through Victim's Assistance here in Charlotte to obtain a Pro Bono attorney. While I appreciated the services Shari was not very supportive of my cause at all. She believed and was supportive of the defendant's cause thereby causing me to lose my case. My supportive reasoning for the previous comment is this. I made it very clear that I was filing the charges because of my rights as a U.S. citizen to be free to exist without threats, attacks, and danger in my way. Shari was not on that same level with me. In fact she was on the level with the defendant's attorney. she was persistent that I was there because of my ex boyfreinend thereby demeaning my level of education and objectivity. Then my request to have a walk through of the questions that would be asked of me were completely ignored. So that when I got onto the stand my answers were not polished nor did I emphasize my safety the way I wanted to do so. And the defendant's attorney brought in informatin that I was told by the assistant would be objected to and it was not thereby making it look as though I was ther because of a man. I lost my case. And now this woman bwho is a threat to others is justified.

Only giving 1 star because it’s needed to write a review. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON HIM!!!!!!! I had been TRYING to work with him for about 3 months for my mother’s estate, and he did absolutely NOTHING but waste my time. When family tensions happened, he advised me to call the police. State police laughed for even calling. Afterwards, Mr. Kline then ignored my emails for weeks until he found something else to discuss about and blamed “not knowing what else to do”. Just save yourself the trouble. The guy has no clue what he is doing, picks and chooses when he wants to work and if you don’t have a $200,000 price tag coming with ya, your not gonna be any type of a priority.

Paul take time out to hear his clients and he fights for what is right. a men who like to get to the point, may seem serious or got somewhere else to be, but that's only because he has a strong judge of character and have the best interest of his clients!! Paul will get the best deals for his clients or take it to trial he is not scare to tell the D.A like it is, he's not with selling out his clients he knows the law like he knows the back of his hands he doesn't have to come to court in a expensive tuxedo to explore his royalty for his knowledge of the law says it all !! I know every client is entitled to his own opinion however I read one client review he stating that Paul seem like he didn't have time for him but to me it seem like he was looking for someone to hold his hands if Paul did that with everyone he wont have time to keep his clients out of jail

I could not have made worse choice than to hire this attorney. He was rude, unprofessional, and made it seem like he had somewhere better to be every time I spoke to him, even when we were in court. He is obviously smart, but lazy. He should have retired long ago. He doesn't care in the least how his cases turn out, only that he gets paid for his time. I found out AFTER my case that he had mislead me about the seriousness of the consequences I faced. He didn't lie but he left huge steps out of his 'explanation' of what he had me agree to in court, and I'll have to deal with that for the rest of my life. Do not trust this man with your future. You will be the one paying the price, long after he has forgotten your name.

He’s very dismissive and was more concerned about me going to his church rather then discussing my case. His representation his horrible and is more worried about his own image. He kept rescheduling my case to only withdraw because my mom didn’t meet him but never once addressed my with a issue and I didn’t find out he was no longer representing me until the day of my hearing. For $1500 I would of thought he’d at least hear my side of the story. He even made a comment to me about staying out the streets? However I’m a full time day with a special needs kid and don’t have time or would jeopardize my sons future. Not only did he NOT put up a fight after I initially sought custodyou of my kids he had the nerve to tell me I'm lucky I'm getting what I am getting. He put me so far in a hole that I could not get out of till this point. Made agreements that were not in the best interest of my kids or myself. We retained Garrett to be our attorney after a bus driver hit our son ON VIDEO. Mr. Benner dragged the case out telling us that the school district was settling and he was negotiating with the school attorney. He never returned emails or phone calls even when we made an appointment with his secretary to have a phone conference. Once the case was past the statute of limitations for filing a suit against the school district, he let us know that the district no longer wanted to settle. Big surprise. And here's the kicker! He never told us that his partner's brother was married to the principal of the middle school that our son attended in the district that we're suing! Can anyone spell "CONFLICT OF INTEREST"? Needless to say, we've moved onto another attorney. Word to the wise, "Dont't use this guy! A deceitful man and a complete waste of time".

She is horrible with her job. She does not care about her clients. If anyone ever gets her, find a reason to gain a different PD. I know several clients of hers and one of them is dear to me. She did such a horrid job on protecting him, that instead of a charge that was initially just a fine, turned into 9 months in prison and work release. She had a letter explaining his innocence and that the charges were to be dropped. Instead she made him plead guilty. Told the family that he was to be released by the holidays, but when it came down to it, never filed the petition. Along with that never answered the phone or returned any of the several voice mails. We still do not know a release date or any information about her client. She is a horrible public defender. I understand she, like many, has a lot of clients. Somehow at every court date plenty of other Public Defenders did their job in defending their clients. All except for her.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
