When I was involved in a DUII I was scared, ashamed and felt alone. I was also panicking because I’ve never had to hire an attorney so was already overwhelmed with where to start. It was a holiday weekend, a bit of research and they answered the phone on Thanksgiving Day, which spoke volumes. Every single person I interacted with in the office, from receptionist, to legal assistants, to attorney, were reassuring, kind, understanding and knowledgeable. It was an easy decision to hire them and I have not regretted it throughout this entire process. It’s very clear that they have your very best interest as their priority and I would 100% recommend Reynolds Law Firm to anyone that might find themselves in this awful situation.

During my court date, he showed up overly prepared which showed me just how much he cared about my case. I am careful with money, and lawyers are expensive. I brought Mr. Perriquey a seemingly complex set of documents for review. Lake took the time to make me understand his informed opinion. Mr. Perriguey took the time to understand my uninformed concerns. While Lake's efforts are painstaking, he is also efficient. In summary, Mr. Perriguey provides value far in excess of his fees.

He was ALWAYS available to answer questions and provide guidance regardless of the time of day. Lake doesn't just litigate the issues, he truly is an Advocate for justice. I owe my life to him.

My husband and I found ourselves having to sue a family member over real estate. It was just awful for us. We had never needed an attorney before, so we didn't even know where to start! With a cold call I found Lake. Wow did we get lucky! Lake provided us with guidance and integrity throughout the process which was quite complicated. He explained the lawsuit process clearly to ensure that we understood how it all works. He filed all the documents through the court and corresponded with the opposing attorney in a timely manner. He also made himself available to me when I was feeling especially low, making me feel better. We were able to work out a deal that worked for both us and our relative. We are so grateful to Lake for getting us through this!

If you are considering hiring Travis Mayor to represent you, do NOT hesitate! After two different attorneys told me there was no way to pursue a larger settlement than the measley one I was offered, Travis told me his plan to seek appropriate compensation for a colliision that took me months to recover from. And he delivered. The entire process with his firm was delightful - from his amazing team to his personal phone calls keeping me updated. I could not have asked for a better experience.

Let me tell you one thing, if there was an option for 7-star I would've picked it. I’m incredibly grateful to have had Jonathan Corey by my side during my divorce—a process that was far more complex and emotionally draining than I ever anticipated. From day one, Jonathan’s communication was clear, consistent, and compassionate. He patiently explained every step of the legal journey, answered my (many) questions without hesitation, and kept me grounded when the stakes felt overwhelming. My situation involved defending against unfounded allegations across multiple fronts, including interactions with DHS and the civil court system. Jonathan’s attention to detail was remarkable. He meticulously reviewed every document, flagged inconsistencies in the opposing side’s claims, and built a strategy that prioritized facts over drama. What impressed me most was his calm, steady professionalism. Even when the process dragged on longer than expected, Jonathan never rushed or cut corners. He reassured me that patience would allow the truth to surface—and he was right. Jonathan’s ability to balance assertiveness with respect for the process made all the difference. He never resorted to unnecessary conflict, but he also never backed down from defending my rights. His updates were frequent and straightforward, and he always made sure I understood my options without sugarcoating the challenges. What truly sets Jonathan apart, though, is his integrity. He treated my case with the care and urgency of someone fighting for a close friend, not just a client. By the end, his dedication paid off: the falsehoods were exposed, and I could finally move forward with peace of mind. If you’re facing a high-conflict divorce or legal battle, I can’t recommend Jonathan Corey enough. He’s the kind of attorney who fights tirelessly for fairness while staying grounded in what’s ethical and real. Thank you, Jonathan, for turning a nightmare into a resolution that protected my rights—and my sanity. You’re a rare find in this field.

Jonathan Corey was a great divorce lawyer to have on my side. I went through a tough divorce, was dealing with a large marital estate and a long term marriage. I was really worried about all of the complexities of our estate dealing with real estate, stocks, retirement accounts, precious metals, etc., not to mention children and all of the other things that have to be dealt with. Jonathon was a great communicator and dug into understand all aspects of the divorce. He was a real advocate for me and really helped me get the best case scenario for my situation. He was also very responsive and had amazing professionalism throughout the entire process. If you want someone that is on your side, cares about what happens to you and your children and gets you the best possible representation with the best possible outcome you don't need to look any further. These guys have been with me for 7 years through one of the scariest events of my life. Through that time, my case started at the worst spot possible, and over the years of hard work From the team which included Mark, Jeff, and Jake, my case is significantly less scary and difficult to deal with. I left everything in their hands and trusted them with every decision. They guided me through grueling interviews from prosecutors. They kept me feeling calm and safe during my time testifying as a witness. Jeff also always responded promptly to all my calls and texts throughout all hours of the day and the anxiety/Panic filled evenings. During all this time as well I got to stay with my family and live peacefully without fear during the courts work. I could not think of a better law firm for dealing with your criminal mistakes.

I write this review nearly 15 years after Steven saved my life. So I’ll be short and sweet. When I think about Steven Sherlag I can’t help but look back and imagine “Billy Flynn”, the defense lawyer in the movie Chicago. What I witnessed Steven do was both a blessing and magic to say the least. He is a good man with a pure moral compass. I pray I never need his assistance again, but if I do, I pray he answers that call. I have recommended him and would recommend his talent to anyone, family, friends, or strangers.

Steve's a real guy who understands the real world and the way cops, DHS and the judicial system abuse power and civil rights. He was recommended to me and I recommend him to you. He's my guardian angel and I Iove him like a brother. He's totally human and can relate to the feelings of others. He's not a shrink, but he's not above heartfelt and healing words and "just talking." He's very funny too. He does his best to help you keep perspective when the world seems like it's falling down. I owe Steve a debt which may be un-repayable in this lifetime. This was a near death experience for me and I now know just how interwoven and connected we are. Did Steve owe me karmically before or did we begin something this time around? He represented me when I was framed by Albany, Oregon police detective Glen Fairall for abusing my own children when he had actually abused them through going into their school, bullying and intimidating the administrator into letting him question (i.e. interrogate) my 6 year old daughter and subsequently ordering all three of my daughters (1,3 and 6 yrs) "examined" (state sanctioned child sex abuse) at ABC House because he couldn't find any evidence. He had wasted his time and probably realized he was looking bad so he blew his stack and went berzerk when I got an attorney and charged me with 3 counts of child sex abuse and a topper of RAPE to make things stick. The Grand Jury dismissed the rape charge but undoubtedly the DA George Eder easily pushed over the foggy and nebulous charges of sex abuse to get an indictment. After all that's what a Grand Jury is for: producing indictments. It's not hard when there's no judge and no defense representation! It's a trial in a vacuum... Bathing your child, changing where they might see you, potty training them and comforting them when they're scared at night are readily spinnable as sex-crimes. He didn't charge my wife for doing these things, only me, the father. As detective Fairall said it's his "business". Steve stayed with me through the whole thing and regularly came to Albany when needed (75 miles) during the 2+ years of horror, 4 preparations for trials (3 blocked by DA/courthouse shenanigans), DA calling an illegal mistrial and ultimately, 6 months later a 7 day trial and extremely fast exoneration. I hope you never have to hire Steve to defend you and you probably won't as long as you know that it's a bad idea to "talk to cops" and teach your loved ones likewise. "Anything you say can be used against you" IS FOR REAL. It's not just movies. If the cop feels like it your words will be spun, manipulated, taken out of context and even misquoted. All exculpatory evidence will be ignored. That's how the pros make probable cause." Don't be naieve. It could cost your life or that of someone you care for. Cops and DAs are allowed to lie and they do it a lot. They're rewarded for it. They'll lie to your kids too. The courts do not hold anyone of "the system" accountable. That means fraud, perjury, and forgery by cops are not seen as crimes in these kinds of cases. Only we can change the system and that is by exposing these guys, making them and their employers look bad and always demanding trials. But if you are getting railroaded, Steve may be able to help you. To say he saved my family and my life is an understatement. I recommend him with all my heart. --Dain S. A, Oregon

I cannot recommend my attorney highly enough. He did an extraordinary job defending my First Amendment rights in a case that should never have existed in the first place. From the very beginning, he was a fierce advocate for justice and held the District Attorney's office accountable at every turn.I was wrongfully arrested during a peaceful protest. Despite this clear overreach, the DA delayed the case by withholding critical discovery for months. My attorney refused to tolerate these tactics and ensured the DA was reprimanded for a Brady violation after failing to provide crucial video evidence of my arrest. His commitment to my case was unmatched—every motion, subpoena, and argument was crafted to expose the misconduct and protect my rights. When the DA finally handed over video evidence just two days before trial, my attorney spent his entire weekend preparing, keeping me informed every step of the way. During the trial, his preparation and courtroom presence were truly inspiring. He skillfully incorporated my notes into his arguments and dismantled the prosecution's baseless case with precision and determination. Friends and supporters who attended the trial were equally impressed by his professionalism and dedication. One particularly memorable moment came during the officer’s testimony. When the officer began referencing information not included in his reports, my attorney immediately asked if the DA had prepped him for trial. The officer’s vague and evasive answers unraveled the credibility of the prosecution. When the DA sent the officer a text during the trial referencing an unmentioned statute, my attorney immediately demanded and obtained discovery of that communication, using it to strengthen my case the very next day. His ability to adapt and turn the prosecution's mistakes into advantages was nothing short of remarkable. Despite the DA's relentless and unjust attempts to fabricate a case against me, my attorney never wavered. He caught errors that could have been exploited by the prosecution at any time and built a strong defense to ensure justice prevailed. When the prosecution rested, he filed a motion for acquittal so compelling that the DA had no chance of overcoming it. The judge even noted that the jury would have ruled in my favor. I will always be grateful for my attorney’s tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to defending me against injustice. He not only protected my rights but also exposed unethical behavior by the prosecution, including threats to witnesses. If you need a lawyer who will fight for you, hold the system accountable, and ensure justice is served, look no further. He is truly a champion for justice.

We were given a referral to Mr. Thomas Coan by someone very pleased with his representation. Thomas worked with us for a year as there were a number of extensions. He listened to us and gave us a clear plan of action to prepare for court. He was honest about the possibilities of how the case could turn out, which allowed us to prepare if it went to the negative. He took many notes and asked a lot of questions. There was a video of the incident which he viewed multiple times. We had a number of friends and family that came to court with us. When the case was dismissed and there was much rejoicing, he was genuinely glad and even joined us all for a coffee celebration! We highly recommend Mr. Thomas Coan.

He picked apart and disproved all charges before it went to trial. He relentlessly fought for me and my family every step of the way. Thomas was exceptional at communicating and responding to my questions quickly. In the end I did except a plea of a class B misdemeanor. This was a great win considering the original charges were measure 11 felony and 2 class A misdemeanors. I would highly recommend Thomas Coan to any person facing criminal charges.

Ryan Anfuso is incredible! He is the most attentive and professional attorney you could ask for. He is not a “Plea Bargainer”. He will fight for you, not just try to get you a plea offer. I fired my first attorney for failing to prepare for trial and lack of communication. Within 3 months, Ryan did more for my defense than the 6 months my previous attorney had. Ryan has a great team and a vast amount of resources. He thinks ‘outside the box’ to develop the best strategy for your defense. Ryan is empathic and compassionate. He treats you like a human, not like a criminal. When it comes time to go to court, he doesn’t sit by quietly. He addresses indiscretions and doesn’t get bullied by the DA. He will fight for you! Most importantly, if you call him, he will call you back!

I was in a very abusive relationship with my ex boyfriend for three years. One night he attacked me, which was often... I started screaming and the neighbors called the police. I had been drinking and he hadn’t. I was charged with two counts of domestic violence harassment... I thought my life was over. So I called Ryan Anfuso. He immediately looked at my case and helped me. He always answered my calls or called me the same day. He found enough evidence to get both charges dismissed! If you are ever falsely accused of a crime, please call Ryan Anfuso. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be able to move on with my life and feel free, literally and metaphorically. There is no attorney better, I was so lucky to find him, I would be in jail probably if it wasn’t for him. And now I can be happy, thank you for everything Ryan.

I was very happy to find Ryan as my lawyer. He immediately made me feel comfortable and was very helpful with explaining everything and setting proper expectations. He made the experience as positive as possible and was always in touch. Willing to work with me and my schedule and made me feel secure that he was actively pursuing my case. He was extremely personable and a very nice individual to speak with. The entire process was very smooth and very fast. He stayed in close touch throughout the situation and made me feel in the loop. Could not be happier.

I was arrested for a duii while visiting Portland Oregon. I called his office the day I was released from booking. He called me th hat night. Attorney Lesh explained everything to me in a way that was so easy to understand and he gave me all the time I needed to let it all sink in. He was so nice and didnt get frustrated when I asked him to repeat his explanations (sometime more than two or three times). Since I'm from Massachusetts he was able to get the judge to allow me to return home while waiting for mg court date. He even was able to reschedule my date to a week I was returning to Portland. Once in court he advised me and was able to get me into the diversion program which when completed would get my case dismissed. He was even able to get th he judge to allow me to complete the program in Massachusetts. I would highly recommend David to anyone needing representation. He is down to earth and very approachable. He is always available via phone or email and he always returns calls if he is unable to talk at the time. I dont want to say how much he charged me, but I spoke to 4 others before selecting him. His cost was very very reasonable and I feel I received as good or better service than any of the BIG FIRMS... I hope I never need his services again but if I ever get into trouble again I would not hesitate to call his office. Please give him a call... you wont be disappointed!!!

Mr Lesh was able to resolve some confusion about this rather arcane part of the law. He was very knowledgeable as only someone with extensive prosecutorial experience could be. He will be my first choice in the future for any of my legal needs.

Bronson James is the attorney that the Super 100 attorneys go to for expert legal advice. A noted authority in both Federal and Oregon criminal law as well as an expert appeal tactician Mr. James’ legal opinion is also asked for by Court Judges prior to their rulings. Mr. James was on the “short list” for consideration as one of Oregon’s state Appellant Judges. Justly earned as he successfully argued the 2014 U.S. Supreme Court case Riley v. California as counsel for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Brennan Center for Justice. In this landmark Supreme Court decision, national law enforcement officers now can no longer search cell phones without a court ordered search warrant based upon probable cause. I was fortunate to have Mr. James on my legal defense team as he was able to recommend and negotiate the best possible outcome for my case based on his legal acumen and professional reputation. I most strongly recommend Mr. James either as your primary defense council or to work with your primary defense council during trial to prepare the strongest appeal case if necessary. Mr. James is one of those few professional attorneys who can give you your life back.

Jill Petty was quite professional and competent regarding my case, based on an over-eager arrest and charge for DUI. She selected the best approach for dismissal before arraignment, which worked: central to it was to offer witness statements to rebut the field sobriety test. She did not urge me to plead guilty and go for diversion, as the first lawyer I contacted said i should do (and for more money). She was reasonable in her cost to deal with the case, and I am very pleased with the outcome. She understood that I was quite upset with the position I was in before dismissal, as pleading guilty would have made it more difficult to run my business and would have cost me lost time and money. She also counseled me not to attempt a civil wrongful arrest suit to recover lost business profit, moving violation ticket fee, impound fee, and etc.; it turned out that the ticket related to the stop was waived as well. I highly recommend her.

In representing us, the lawyers were persistent, professional, and patient. They accommodated our needs and explained both the relevant law and how processes would apply to our case. They saw our case through to the end and worked through each step and "curve-ball" along the way. We hope we will never need their services again, but we would never hesitate to call them if we do. I was in a relatively unique situation involving a car accident and was being held financially responsible, although I didn't believe I was solely at fault. I wasn't sure if it was even worth trying to fight. During the initial consultation, Mr. Leonard did a great job of listening, asking the right questions, and informing me of all of the possible outcomes. He was also clear about what his approach would be, and I left feeling like I had a clear idea of how he was planning to proceed. I decided to hope for the best and hired him to handle the case. He kept me up to date on the progress of the case and did a great job communicating with me throughout the process. I was incredibly relieved and grateful when he won the case for me, as it saved me quite a bit of money. I would absolutely recommend Mr. Leonard to any of my friends or family, and would use his services again should I ever find myself in a similar situation (although I'll cross my fingers that never happens :-)

He did a great job of keeping me updated and keeping me from having to be bothered at all by the process. The next time I called him, was for an auto accident where the claim process was dragged out by the other person's insurance company forever. Mr Leonard again kept me in the loop without letting anyone involved bother me about any of it. Before I met Matthew Holland, I probably had one of the most confusing and sloppy divorce cases due to a crazy ex-wife that wanted money, to see me suffer, and take away my son. Matthew was my 4th and final lawyer on this extremely difficult case. I have learned, when one is in a litigation battle, it is necessary that you have all facets in a lawyer and law office. It is extremely difficult to find an attorney that knows the law in and out. Mr. Holland is accurate, thorough, fast at filing paperwork, and can dominate in the courtroom if the case is forced to trial. This guy did it all. Matt won an extremely difficult case and dug me out of a MASSIVE hole when I met him. He gave me my son back and my life. In addition to gaining my time with my son, Matt saved me from what could have been a substantial debt. It was super impressive to watch him work at his craft. He is an immense asset at Donahue law Firm in Bend Oregon. I owe a great thanks to Matthew Holland and his incredible paralegal Annalee Hoagland. I can't stress this enough; I highly recommend Matthew Holland as a divorce attorney. I also believe that Donahue Law Firm has taken the #1 spot in town for a pedigree law firm. Do your research, there are only two others.

I feel very fortunate to have come upon Matt Holland. I presented him with a complex employment contract with a medical group and hospital (25 pages worth of legalese), and he went through them point-by-point with me the very next day. He explained everything clearly, pointed out the 'draconian' parts, and reassured me that as a whole it was a fair contract. He charged less than average and yet I am sure my contract was reviewed with more care and close attention than it would have been at some big law place. Plus Matt was flexible about timing, and was willing to review the contract with me partly over the phone and partly at his office, even though it was late in the day. I looked him up on Yelp, and read his philosophy about law, and I must say, I am impressed by his professionalism and purpose. It's not every day you meet a lawyer who genuinely believes in the law and uses his training for good. This is not your stereotypical greedy or smarmy lawyer; this is a good guy. I hope I don't need an attorney in future, but if I do, I most certainly will return to Holland Law.

I hired David to defend a contested restraining order that I had petitioned on an abusive person in my life, successfully. I had spoken with several offices prior to our initial phone call. Some wanted me to put down a substantial retainer before I even got to speak with one of their lawyers, some seemed eager to have me pay a relatively inexpensive rate for a quick sale on a newer/inexperienced attorney, and some needed to charge me a few hundred for the initial consultation. A couple of others gave me a free consultation but it didnt seem that they had a niche in the particular type of restraining order I had petitioned. While I respect that there are myriad business models out there, David's appealed to me because his initial consultation was free to hear me out (before I knew that I wanted to hire him), he immediately spoke with competence and wisdom regarding the particulars of my case, and his "flat fee" model was unique and attractive. His price seemed fair in the end (I could have spent less, I could have spent more) but was well justified by his experience. The fact that this case may have been dragged out into additional hours was eased by me knowing that I would never be charged for anything extra regardless of how long it took. It is my understanding that many attorneys will nickel and dime you to hire them for additional "surprise" hours and may even lie/pressure you about the false need for it, but David (who is aware of the ill-perception of attorney practices) found a creative flat-fee solution to control for this. The flat-fee structure means that he sees the job through to the end regardless of how long it takes. You know that one honest mechanic that you recommend to all of your peers because it seems that every other one out there has a history of trying to sell you extra services that you didnt need but were naive about? Well David can well be compared to that honest mechanic but for the world of lawyers. He seemed to have had an "indie" vibe to him as opposed to the mainstream giant law office lawyers I had interviewed prior to. Regardless, he was able to be confrontational to my opponent as I needed him to be and very knowledgeable. Its clear that even though I strongly considered being self-represented (which David even suggested that I reasonably could and didnt *need* to hire anyone), my case was stronger because I had him fighting it for me. The numerous amounts of evidence I had were more organized and presented to a stronger effect much to the chagrin of my opponent. I'll say it again: his price structure and business model give him more integrity than other lawyers since it removes the incentive for billing for additional "surprise" hours. There isnt any real way for him to take advantage of his clients this way and I think that that's worth its weight on its own.

Dear potential defendant, Ok where do I even begin? To say I owe this Trial Lawyer my life both present and future would be the understatement of my life which to state things lightly has consisted of more intentional mistakes than I care to admit...so I won't... ;-) Without David's intervention in a system plagued with hypocrisy and unfair governmental practices I'd still be buried under the Federal building after of which if they ever did decide to un-bury me they would have then buried me under the State prison! This is one attorney that you can lay it all out for in all it's splendor or ugliness and he'll weed through any prosecutorial induced nonsense like a locust in a corn field! Don't get me wrong; he won't cross ethical boundaries (nor does any good attorney need to in order to still win) but if you want a real person that won't judge you; yet will still protect your interests whether you're innocent or guilty as sin; this is your man. Period. I've seen David T McDonald turn prosecutors and cops into helmet wearing, window licking simpletons just by knowing his trade and the law better than anyone else in the arena; and make no mistake it IS an arena. Is he cheap? Nope but like anyone who has ever paid for a real service knows; you get what you pay for and after all what is more valuable than one's time? Nothing, because you can't get it back... you can't buy it back, steal it back or beg for it back. It's just gone. Besides, prison really sucks; trust me on that if you trust me on nothing else. A savvy competent lawyer can prevent your time and life from slipping into the black abyss of what is oddly referred to as the "Justice System". Have a swell day and I hope this aids in you deciding to arm yourself with a Tyrannosaurus (I believe that's what the T in David's name stands for) chess piece that is unparalleled by any other across the board. Regards, Your friendly neighborhood ex criminal. RR

I hired Kevin Lucey after a recommendation from a music business attorney I occasionally work with. Turned out to be a great choice as Kevin led me through this agonizing process with great efficiency. Kevin Lucey is an expert with dealing with these hard to deal with insurance companies. Insurance companies would be perfectly happy to offer nothing for someone in a personal injury situation and Kevin navigated and handled the claim in a timely and efficient manner. I can't imagine having to try and deal with them myself. My gut reaction when I spoke with the claims adjuster was that they were going to try and screw me as best they could. My son was accused of a serious Federal offense, at this point, his future was in the hands of an attorney, I am so grateful that attorney was Laurie Schertz!! It is a very scary place to be, to say the least. Ms. Schertz took charge, she had an investigator and an assistance. They all seemed to spent countless hours to give my son the best defense. I am sure that she had other clients, but Laurie always made us feel like we were the only one. She is attentive, responsive, dedicated and professional and most important to me.....compassionate. She took the time to know my son and I. I did not feel like I was just another number on the case load. I unfortunately have had the opportunity to deal with numerous attorneys over the years. Most of the time I have felt that it was about the money and moving the case along. I never felt that way with Ms. Schertz. She truly cared about what was best for my son, not herself. My son got the best deal possible, I believe. He has been in prison for almost 8 months now. The really amazing piece is this......Laurie told us that she was closing the case and putting the file away, but that if there was anything we needed to let her know. My son is having some release issues, he got a hold of Laurie and she took care of business. Laurie Schertz is a woman of integrity, if you are in need of a criminal defense attorney, my belief is that Laurie is the BEST. She knows her way around the court room and has poise. People pay attention when she talks. I can not say enough good about Laurie Schertz as an attorney and a person.

Ted is excellent!! I would never go to anyone else. He is fair and upfront. No hidden charges and is not in it for the money like most lawyers. He genuinely cares about the outcome of your case and it shows.

Diane has never rushed me or treated me like a number or a dollar figure. She always takes her time to listen to what I have to say, how I feel, then easily helps me with paper work or issues I may have. Dianne has been very helpful in contacting people on my behalf and in getting results I need to process my immigration paper work. She is a joy to work with and is personable. She also called me up to see how I have been and if I heard anything from immigration. Diane has never worried about payment for her services or overcharged me for services rendered. She cares more about helping people then fattening her wallet. Diane is someone I would recommend to anyone looking for immigration assistance because she is a dedicated fighter for her client's rights.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
