Jill Petty was quite professional and competent regarding my case, based on an over-eager arrest and charge for DUI. She selected the best approach for dismissal before arraignment, which worked: central to it was to offer witness statements to rebut the field sobriety test. She did not urge me to plead guilty and go for diversion, as the first lawyer I contacted said i should do (and for more money). She was reasonable in her cost to deal with the case, and I am very pleased with the outcome. She understood that I was quite upset with the position I was in before dismissal, as pleading guilty would have made it more difficult to run my business and would have cost me lost time and money. She also counseled me not to attempt a civil wrongful arrest suit to recover lost business profit, moving violation ticket fee, impound fee, and etc.; it turned out that the ticket related to the stop was waived as well. I highly recommend her.

During an extremely difficult time (in which the state of Oregon prosecuted on hearsay and appeared to disregard the hard evidence) , Morgans professionalism, empathy, and attention to detail helped me (and my wife) deal with the insanity from the coast. During the year long ordeal, she never failed to make the repeated long trips, with her performance and knowledge creating a better result than I expected in these circumstances. I'm glad she was in my court! Thank You

I Contacted Mr. Mortimer to start proceeding, to set aside a felony conviction, from 16 years ago. He did an excellent job from the beginning to the end going out of his way through the covid-19 pandemic situation. He proceed with my case , of setting aside the felony conviction. The felony has now been lifted from the State of Oregon database. Mr Mortimer went out of his way, and even brought me the final paperwork, from the judge, to my home. I would recommend his services to anyone, that I know , in their time of need. He has been our family attorney for many years and I would like to sincerely thank him for what he has done for me. Amanda represented me after I was selectively pulled over by police when driving away from an animal rights-related protest in Beaverton, OR. The protests had become a regular occurrence, and police in the area had started responding with various forms of threat and intimidation, mostly utilizing the legal system. At that point, there had been some arrests, but one tactic the police adopted was pulling people over as they left the protest under random pretenses in an effort to harass protesters and stick them with fines. Their logic was to increase the cost of protesting, hoping to deter through the bureaucracy of the legal system. I had been targeted by the police and pulled over multiple times. I wanted to challenge one of the tickets I received, for "improper signaling", and Amanda represented me in a challenge against the city and the police. After requesting discovery and making it clear that this little traffic violation would be turned into a political case to investigate the city's complicity in quelling protected speech, the City Attorney decided to drop charges. Thanks to Amanda, we were able to mitigate the threat against activists and show the city of Beaverton that they couldn't arbitrarily use the police so easily and not face consequences and challenges. She was a pleasure to work with and a true advocate for activists.

I was unexpectedly arrested at a protest and charged with several misdemeanors as a result. I wanted to fight the case as I felt the charges were unfair, but I needed an attorney who could understand the scope of my situation and be willing to fight for me without pressuring me to accept a plea. I was so lucky to have found Amanda. She fully understood my concerns and helped me mount the best possible defense I could have. She patiently walked me through all the steps, advised me of potential outcomes, and calmed me when I was stressing. I am extremely grateful that there are good lawyers like Amanda.

Amanda Schemkes! Is an incredible defense attorney. She is well-paced, thoughtful, intentional and humble. For my case, she took all potential legal avenues into account and made the safe and effective legal decisions for my well being. After chaining myself to that Arctic Challenger in defense of a livable climate and healthy arctic, I received a $20,000 fine from the USCG. To defend me, Amanda was able to compile a 17-page necessity-defense speaking to the subsistence needs of the Inupiaq people, The Climate and the sensitive ecological systems of the Arctic. Her work brought my fine down to a manageable $5000 dollars, which my community will be able to raise. Amanda, is an amazing person to work with. She is professional, responds to emails, keeps track of time-lines, is available for questions, is an effective listener and always asks the right questions. If you are looking for a lawyer to support you in pushing boundaries Amanda is a great person for the job.

I was in a relatively unique situation involving a car accident and was being held financially responsible, although I didn't believe I was solely at fault. I wasn't sure if it was even worth trying to fight. During the initial consultation, Mr. Leonard did a great job of listening, asking the right questions, and informing me of all of the possible outcomes. He was also clear about what his approach would be, and I left feeling like I had a clear idea of how he was planning to proceed. I decided to hope for the best and hired him to handle the case. He kept me up to date on the progress of the case and did a great job communicating with me throughout the process. I was incredibly relieved and grateful when he won the case for me, as it saved me quite a bit of money. I would absolutely recommend Mr. Leonard to any of my friends or family, and would use his services again should I ever find myself in a similar situation (although I'll cross my fingers that never happens :-)

Who says that lawyers can't be good people? The first time I hired Scott was for a traffic infraction that I didn't have time to deal with. He did a great job of keeping me updated and keeping me from having to be bothered at all by the process. The next time I called him, was for an auto accident where the claim process was dragged out by the other person's insurance company forever. Mr Leonard again kept me in the loop without letting anyone involved bother me about any of it. Before I met Matthew Holland, I probably had one of the most confusing and sloppy divorce cases due to a crazy ex-wife that wanted money, to see me suffer, and take away my son. Matthew was my 4th and final lawyer on this extremely difficult case. I have learned, when one is in a litigation battle, it is necessary that you have all facets in a lawyer and law office. It is extremely difficult to find an attorney that knows the law in and out. Mr. Holland is accurate, thorough, fast at filing paperwork, and can dominate in the courtroom if the case is forced to trial. This guy did it all. Matt won an extremely difficult case and dug me out of a MASSIVE hole when I met him. He gave me my son back and my life. In addition to gaining my time with my son, Matt saved me from what could have been a substantial debt. It was super impressive to watch him work at his craft. He is an immense asset at Donahue law Firm in Bend Oregon. I owe a great thanks to Matthew Holland and his incredible paralegal Annalee Hoagland. I can't stress this enough; I highly recommend Matthew Holland as a divorce attorney. I also believe that Donahue Law Firm has taken the #1 spot in town for a pedigree law firm. Do your research, there are only two others.

I feel very fortunate to have come upon Matt Holland. I presented him with a complex employment contract with a medical group and hospital (25 pages worth of legalese), and he went through them point-by-point with me the very next day. He explained everything clearly, pointed out the 'draconian' parts, and reassured me that as a whole it was a fair contract. He charged less than average and yet I am sure my contract was reviewed with more care and close attention than it would have been at some big law place. Plus Matt was flexible about timing, and was willing to review the contract with me partly over the phone and partly at his office, even though it was late in the day. I looked him up on Yelp, and read his philosophy about law, and I must say, I am impressed by his professionalism and purpose. It's not every day you meet a lawyer who genuinely believes in the law and uses his training for good. This is not your stereotypical greedy or smarmy lawyer; this is a good guy. I hope I don't need an attorney in future, but if I do, I most certainly will return to Holland Law.

Without Westbrook I would be sitting in prison tonight. I have worked with her for over a year on my case and when I say that, what I mean is: she has dealt with me for over a year and worked on my case. Westbrook is the definition of left field, she comes up with stuff out of no where that makes you feel stupid for never thinking of yourself. In my year with her I definitely thought I finally had an idea of what sort of attorney she was and how she operates. NOPE! She suits up for court and it’s as if you hired a whole different woman! There were times in that court room I’d sworn I saw a cape around her. This woman is absolutely amazing and I owe my life to her, if I ever get falsely accused again there is no one else I would ever go to. EVER. If I moved across the country I’d make her get licensed there just to be my defense again. I gave this poor woman absolute hell for things that had nothing to do with her at times and yet she’d be up until 3am working on my case. She can seem a bit unorthodox but let me assure you there is a method to her madness and you do not want to be the one going against her in a court room because she works in the most unpredictable ways and then suddenly brings it all together and by the time you realize what she did it’s already over. I’m not saying I trust the process, but I do trust her and her process. You have the choice of who’s about to defend you and based on what you did or in my case what you are falsely accused of doing…. Trust me when I say that Westbrook is best bet I ever put my life on. She’s amazing, she’s the best, she’s going to get you through the nearly impossible,

I was in a bind in Oregon City with an unexpected criminal charge. Westbrook came highly recommended by a top divorce attorney and proved skilled and knowledge on extremely short notice by consulting me on the phone, text, and in person during a last minute hearing. She has a heart to help the underdog while staying cool under pressure (without bias). Three years ago I was wrongfully convicted of crimes I did not commit. After winning an appeal I was assigned Westbrook. I was a problem client, I did not wanna wave my sixty day speedy trial rights to give her more time to work on my case all I saw was the thirty months I had been wrongfully imprisoned. Westbrook did her best and actually won my case and got me released from custody. After watching my previous attorney just roll over and show his belly during the first trial, it was refreshing just to see Westbrook fight, veraciously for my rights, to defend me with a tenacity of someone who honestly cares about doing their very best. I would say hands down Westbrook is the best lawyer in Oregon.

I hired David to defend a contested restraining order that I had petitioned on an abusive person in my life, successfully. I had spoken with several offices prior to our initial phone call. Some wanted me to put down a substantial retainer before I even got to speak with one of their lawyers, some seemed eager to have me pay a relatively inexpensive rate for a quick sale on a newer/inexperienced attorney, and some needed to charge me a few hundred for the initial consultation. A couple of others gave me a free consultation but it didnt seem that they had a niche in the particular type of restraining order I had petitioned. While I respect that there are myriad business models out there, David's appealed to me because his initial consultation was free to hear me out (before I knew that I wanted to hire him), he immediately spoke with competence and wisdom regarding the particulars of my case, and his "flat fee" model was unique and attractive. His price seemed fair in the end (I could have spent less, I could have spent more) but was well justified by his experience. The fact that this case may have been dragged out into additional hours was eased by me knowing that I would never be charged for anything extra regardless of how long it took. It is my understanding that many attorneys will nickel and dime you to hire them for additional "surprise" hours and may even lie/pressure you about the false need for it, but David (who is aware of the ill-perception of attorney practices) found a creative flat-fee solution to control for this. The flat-fee structure means that he sees the job through to the end regardless of how long it takes. You know that one honest mechanic that you recommend to all of your peers because it seems that every other one out there has a history of trying to sell you extra services that you didnt need but were naive about? Well David can well be compared to that honest mechanic but for the world of lawyers. He seemed to have had an "indie" vibe to him as opposed to the mainstream giant law office lawyers I had interviewed prior to. Regardless, he was able to be confrontational to my opponent as I needed him to be and very knowledgeable. Its clear that even though I strongly considered being self-represented (which David even suggested that I reasonably could and didnt *need* to hire anyone), my case was stronger because I had him fighting it for me. The numerous amounts of evidence I had were more organized and presented to a stronger effect much to the chagrin of my opponent. I'll say it again: his price structure and business model give him more integrity than other lawyers since it removes the incentive for billing for additional "surprise" hours. There isnt any real way for him to take advantage of his clients this way and I think that that's worth its weight on its own.

Dear potential defendant, Ok where do I even begin? To say I owe this Trial Lawyer my life both present and future would be the understatement of my life which to state things lightly has consisted of more intentional mistakes than I care to admit...so I won't... ;-) Without David's intervention in a system plagued with hypocrisy and unfair governmental practices I'd still be buried under the Federal building after of which if they ever did decide to un-bury me they would have then buried me under the State prison! This is one attorney that you can lay it all out for in all it's splendor or ugliness and he'll weed through any prosecutorial induced nonsense like a locust in a corn field! Don't get me wrong; he won't cross ethical boundaries (nor does any good attorney need to in order to still win) but if you want a real person that won't judge you; yet will still protect your interests whether you're innocent or guilty as sin; this is your man. Period. I've seen David T McDonald turn prosecutors and cops into helmet wearing, window licking simpletons just by knowing his trade and the law better than anyone else in the arena; and make no mistake it IS an arena. Is he cheap? Nope but like anyone who has ever paid for a real service knows; you get what you pay for and after all what is more valuable than one's time? Nothing, because you can't get it back... you can't buy it back, steal it back or beg for it back. It's just gone. Besides, prison really sucks; trust me on that if you trust me on nothing else. A savvy competent lawyer can prevent your time and life from slipping into the black abyss of what is oddly referred to as the "Justice System". Have a swell day and I hope this aids in you deciding to arm yourself with a Tyrannosaurus (I believe that's what the T in David's name stands for) chess piece that is unparalleled by any other across the board. Regards, Your friendly neighborhood ex criminal. RR

I hired Kevin Lucey after a recommendation from a music business attorney I occasionally work with. Turned out to be a great choice as Kevin led me through this agonizing process with great efficiency. Kevin Lucey is an expert with dealing with these hard to deal with insurance companies. Insurance companies would be perfectly happy to offer nothing for someone in a personal injury situation and Kevin navigated and handled the claim in a timely and efficient manner. My son was accused of a serious Federal offense, at this point, his future was in the hands of an attorney, I am so grateful that attorney was Laurie Schertz!! It is a very scary place to be, to say the least. Ms. Schertz took charge, she had an investigator and an assistance. They all seemed to spent countless hours to give my son the best defense. I am sure that she had other clients, but Laurie always made us feel like we were the only one. She is attentive, responsive, dedicated and professional and most important to me.....compassionate. She took the time to know my son and I. I did not feel like I was just another number on the case load. I unfortunately have had the opportunity to deal with numerous attorneys over the years. Most of the time I have felt that it was about the money and moving the case along. I never felt that way with Ms. Schertz. She truly cared about what was best for my son, not herself. My son got the best deal possible, I believe. He has been in prison for almost 8 months now. The really amazing piece is this......Laurie told us that she was closing the case and putting the file away, but that if there was anything we needed to let her know. My son is having some release issues, he got a hold of Laurie and she took care of business. Laurie Schertz is a woman of integrity, if you are in need of a criminal defense attorney, my belief is that Laurie is the BEST. She knows her way around the court room and has poise. People pay attention when she talks. I can not say enough good about Laurie Schertz as an attorney and a person.

Once we went to trial, presented an awesome case and had the jury deliberate for only 20 minutes and come back with a 12-0 not guilty verdict. My son filed a habeas & Tara has fought for him through all of it. With the exception of 2 charges brought against the Department of Corrections there in Oregon my son won with Tara's help! She's an awesome attorney & I an so glad my son has her in his corner on this! The article on this case was in the Oregon Live newspaper which I feel set a president on how our Combat Vets are treated while incarcerated.

Tara Herivel worked on our custody case representing my wife and our family against my wife's ex in a dispute over parenting time for our child. There is so much to say about Tara - and all of it good. Tara has worked this case with our family for over two years. Aside from our own immediate family, nobody has stood with and defended us like Tara has. Our custody case was very contentious, and it was often not without drama and craziness. But Tara was able to get us past all of that to really always be one or two steps ahead of the game. Tara was more than our courtroom attorney. Tara guided us in every aspect of a custody dispute, inside the court and out. If ever there was a question as to how we should handle a situation, Tara was only a phone call away. But in the court, Tara knew her craft, and was just wonderful at bringing out the truth. Being represented by Tara, we never felt for a moment that we were “taking our chances” with a judge’s decision. Tara was everything we could’ve hoped for in a lawyer. I could praise Tara’s work for us all day, but this review is also to feature was services specifically were provided. Tara was able to modify our custody agreement after showing to the court that the other party had very low capacity for effective parenting. She was able to arrange supervised visitation (from previous unsupervised visitation) between other party and our child. When other party was unable to comply with the court’s order Tara was able to show the courts that complete suspension of visitation was warranted. Tara fulfilled every role in this case. I can’t say enough about how wonderful it’s been having her as our attorney.

I was thankful to have Sarah at my defense. I was wrongly charged with a DUI which would have likely turned into a conviction without the help of a patient and persistent lawyer. To begin with she asked me all pertinent questions and made every effort to understand my situation. She made me no promises but assured me that I indeed had a case if we were to be able to get a court to understand the details of the situation as well. She guided me through the steps I needed to take to protect my rights while keeping me updated about the progress she was making on my behalf. She uncovered every aspect of the case and presented it in a way that made dropping the charges a clear decision for the jury. Since using her services I've been able to call on her to help clarify decisions I needed to make on legal matters and I have recommended her to friends and family.

Not being a central player in the legal issues I discussed with Mr. Ellis, I cannot say that I hired him, but what I absolutely must say is that he combines great expertise with great humanity and wide, worldly-wise but (or 'and') empathetic perspective. This is a man I would trust to do the right thing. He heard the case of a family member, and the conversation clarified what actions to take (and not take), and I came away thinking very highly of Jeffrey Ellis and appreciative of his generosity with his time.

After eight years of litigation, taking my case to the door steps of the US Supreme Court, Jeff Ellis on October 5 2015 in Pierce County had the state remove the life without sentence they had given me over 13 plus years before. Jeff's brilliance and unrelenting pursuit of justice was on full display. The passion and care he had for my case and other cases that I am aware of tells of a man who is at the top when it comes to results. Today I sit here a free man because of Jeff and I would like to thank him for my freedom. I will always remember the joy and happiness my friends and family had that day in court. Thank you so much to Jeff for the opportunity to let me shine with my new life. Redemption is a special gift and I will always work hard to show that I am truly a redeemable and changed man.

Ms. Browning was part of my legal team in 2015 in a criminal defense case. I've heard so many negative stories about attorneys, but her presence, professionalism, and knowledge extinguished any doubts I had about my own representation and attorneys in general. Ms. Browning always told me the truth, comforted me, kept me relaxed, and worked extremely hard on my case. Needless to say, we won. And I credit her with much of the reason. I'll never be able to thank her enough. She helped save my life. If you hire her, you'll have the hardest working lawyer in town. I've seen it myself. Sincerely, J.D.W.

No one else is saying this, so I will. Emily is a secret weapon at this law firm and she knows Kung Fu. She drove all the way to a small coastal community for my hearing. While other court appointed attorneys were fumbling with their iPads and losing cases for their clients, Emily successfully negotiated my case with the DA before the judge sat down on the bench to hear my plea. Result: Case dismissed. Wow! Please, if you are in trouble like I was, talk to Emily. She’ll listen to you, answer all your questions via email & phone, keep you informed at all times, and be be your advocate when no one else will. I am thankful I brought Emily into my life during a very dark time. Retain Emily Elison as your defense attorney today.

Chris represented me when I was in an accident. He was always available to answer my questions and concerns. The insurance adjuster was being very rude to me up until I hired Chris, then I never had to deal with that insurance a****** again. Chris took care of everything for me and even got the insurance to reimburse me for the crutches I had to rent. I would advise anyone who needs help to call Chris.

I was represented twice by Mrs Pritchard and both times she has fought like a Tiger on my behalf shreding the oponent party to peaces before a court of law. Her tacktics are amazing. I was in the Washington county jail when I met her in early 2006. She is an attorney that is not financially incline in order to defed because she takes cases like if they were her own personal issues and not her clients. To me, it felt that she protected me from anyone or anything coming my way from any direcction at any given time. When she stood next to me before the Judge in open court, her presence was my strenght and it felt like if I was shield with an armor against the enemy. I really, really admire Mrs. Pritchard for her experience and her agressiveness. She also is someone that no matter what you tell her about your case. Good or bad, she just will not change her manners, nor erase her soft smile and those gorgeous eyes she has will continue to see directly onto yours while at the same time listens to you as if a mother was listening to her child. I am in the process of hiring her again. I think of her from time to time because she will always have a place in my heart for her. I have and will always recomend her as long as I live. If she ever looses one of my cases is still will not change the way I feel about her and the respect I owe her. I know she is a Tiger. My legal Tiger.

I ended up hiring Whitney based on a recommendation. Whitney assisted me down a difficult, confusing path. Against my better judgement, Whitney convinced me to move forward and take my case to trial. I had never been more scared in my life. The way I understood it I had everything to loose and little to gain. Whitney advice was spot on, he successful exaunerated my record and I will live free from any legal restrictions for the rest of my life. Whitney worked around my schedule, met with me on weekends in the evening, pretty much held my hand the every step of the way. He is worth every single penny I paid for his service and I can not thank him enough.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
