Unfortunately, me and my wife did not have the best experience with Katy or her law firm. I would suggest if you were looking for an immigration lawyer to look elsewhere before obtaining her services. We made countless phone calls and sent emails with no response for weeks. Both Katy and her staff were very unprofessional and unorganized. She may decide to drop you as clients like she did to us if you ask her too many questions and want updates on your cases. Please do not waste your time and money with this law firm.

I must say that I was very impressed with Katy's professionalism and passion in handling my case, which turned out successfuly. I was referred to her by one of her previous satisfied client who was convinced that she was one of the best around. I was not disappointed. I was impressed with her empathy that instigated her to go beyond the financial boundaries of her contract with us to guide us through our immigration protocols. I would gladly recommend Kathy for anyone in search of an immigration attorney. Indeed her thriving reputation precedes her!

After paying for a consultation with attorney David Baker, he seemed as if he had some knowledge of what I needed from him. Days later I dropped off some documents for him to look over and advise me as a potential client. I haven't heard anything from him since and its been almost a month.I had previously asked him for his honest opinion and his price if he could help me. My opinion is, he isn't committed, passionate, persistent, or honest. If he couldn't help me , all I expected was for him to at least let me know and refer me to someone who possibly could.

I can not give a great or positive evaluation of the service that I received from David Mahlum Law Office. The paralegals staff we're not very professional. Didn't seem knowledgeable in the ways of open commutation, being compassionate or did nothing to keep me in the loop thew this very difficult time to let me know how my case is being handling. After paying his $2000. attorney fee and under his advice, going to the two Counseling Programs. Another $1500. Well I guess as a client I expected better than take my money and do nothing. Specially after being promised I would be reinstated in one year. After making all my attorney Fee's to David Mahlum law firm. Communication stopped. It's now three year and about one year with no contact from David or his Paralegal staff. I highly recommend not to use this law firm. After April 2017. I will report this law firm to North Carolina state Bar.

I hired Mr. Mahlum to help me with a speeding ticket I had gotten while driving through a school zone. On our first meeting, he gave me advise about what to expect and what kind of options I may have moving forward. With his help and knowledge, he was able to help get my sentence reduced in court. And never once did I have to actually go to the courthouse. Mr. Mahlum handled all the back end work for me. He made process very easy and painless. I am very appreciative for his services and would absolutely hire him in the future.

I hired Ms. Meyers to handle my divorce because she was referred by one of her sorors. To make a long story short, her “flat fee” was $4,000. She did absolutely nothing while she was my lawyer. She did not file one document or even share one single draft with me. We communicated through a messaging portal and had one phone conversation. Some questions went responded to for extended periods of time. When I started asking too many questions, she dismissed me from her firm. Within the 1st week of hiring my new lawyer, I had several court documents filed and the new firm actually show (email) me a draft of everything they do. I made more progress with my new team in 1 week then I had made with Ms. Meyers over 8 months. I am not sure if she just didn’t have the experience and didn’t know what to or if she was just being lazy but it was an expensive lesson to learn. If you need someone to actually help you especially with family matters, please find someone else. It might suck to spend the additional funds but it will be worth it in the end. Like the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for”.

Mrs. Meyers was great to work with. It is easy to tell that she has a passion for what she does and is focused on the best interest of the parties involved. She really listened to all aspects of my situation and respectfully advised me on how to approach it. Documents were turned into the court in a timely fashion & she was very easy to get in touch with. I would highly recommend her.

Very poor litigator, as another reviewer pointed out. Poor communication throughout two hearings and in need of a better paralegal. The only time it was easy to speak with her was when it was time to make a payment. We wasted close to 3 grand on her, and after losing our second temporary custody order case, we wisely switched lawyers. The other party represented themselves and out-mitigated this lawyer in court on BOTH occasions. Meanwhile, Atty. Meyers read basic questions from a print-out. I don't know if she was afraid of the presiding judge or lacked the skills she needed to successfully argue the case on both occasions. However, she is way too overpriced and seemed to lack the knowledge it took to win. After we switched lawyers, we ended up winning EVERYTHING and everything went in our favor, every single time. Costly mistake in choosing Atty Meyers first though. Lesson learned. I would NEVER refer her to anyone.

Ms Davis has a background primarily in criminal law but also takes on cases for separation, child custody, child support, and divorce. She brings toughness to the court but she’s not as competent on the Family Law side as I expected. I did not get the outcome that I expected during my custody/support/alimony cases and I feel like she was not realistic with me about NC family law and the temperament of Wake County Family Court judges. Wake County Family judges are very progressive and there is absolutely no preference of the mother over the father if all things considered equal. We went in with a 1980/1990 strategy and it just didn’t work. Additionally, opposing counsel and judge corrected her a few times and on occasion I felt like we could have prepared better. I hired Attorney Davis for initial hearings but I ultimately decided to represent myself midway through the 2-year ordeal and I felt better about the outcomes I was able to achieve on my own … with no additional money needed. Once I, myself, understood the system and how the judges rule, I set my expectations accordingly. But biggest lesson learned is that I should have just compromised with my ex-husband from the beginning. It would have saved a lot of time, energy, and money… and kept things peaceful moving forward for now we co-parent our daughter. But you can’t expect an attorney to give you that advice.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
